USC Market Days are in full swing The new USC Market Days commenced in Semester 2 2016 at the Sippy Downs campus and have gone from strength to strength. Starting with 11 vendors, we now have 20 stalls confirmed for the 18 October event, the last date for 2016. Offering a range of services from massages, haircuts, and financial advice, to jewellery, gourmet food, and clothing. The markets have enabled us to expand the retail choices on campus on a regular basis and bring a festive atmosphere to the Brasserie Lawn. Student participation in the event is also on the rise with several student clubs expressing an interest in using the markets as a means of promoting their clubs’ activities and recruiting new members. Plus, we have had some fantastic live music by USC students, including a Caloundra Music Festival act and a Triple J Unearthed finalist, to entertain the lunchtime crowd. So why not take a break and come down to the next USC Market Day on 18 October at the Brasserie Lawn. Support local small business, listen to some great tunes, play one of our new outdoor games, or even just relax for five minutes under an umbrella. You can do it all at the markets! USC hits the slopes at its first Australian Snow Uni GamesLast month USC Swiss international students, Thomas, Luca and Ramona, headed to the 2016 Australian Snow Uni Games held at Mt Buller, Victoria, as USC’s first ever representatives at the event. Although no medal finishes, USC came close with 4 top-ten finishes in the Super G and Skier Cross races. The best result however was USC’s 3rd place in the Spirit of the Mountain vote which saw participants and organisers give points to their favourite university of the Games. Across 21 competing universities and some with teams of over 40 competitors, that is called making a great impression!

Great results at 2016 Australian Uni GamesThe 2016 Australian Uni Games were held from 25-30 September in Perth with over 5,500 student-athletes attending from across Australia. With 34 sports on offer and 42 member universities represented, USC put on an outstanding performance with an overall 17th place finish and 14th per capita.

Results were:

- Gold – Women’s Volleyball Team

- Gold x 2 – Cameron Taylor, Taekwondo

- Silver – Beach Volleyball Mixed Fours

- Bronze – Jane Larkin, 200m Track

- Bronze - Jessica Haig, 800m Track

Competitors Cameron Taylor (Taekwondo) and Maike Bertram, Chloe Wolski, Cecilia Webbe and Angela Johnson (Women’s Volleyball) were also selected as Green & Gold recipients which acknowledges the best athletes of the Games.

Finally, USC student Klade Hauschildt won gold at the 2016 FISU World University Sailing Championship also held Perth. The event attracted 78 student-athletes from 42 universities worldwide to compete over 5 days of sailing. All in all a great effort by our students and USC.

Youi development underwayWorks have commenced on leading insurance company Youi’s $80 million international head office located on Sippy Downs Drive. The site will include 1,800 car spaces and an external café to service the 1,700 staff expected over the next few years. The project is expected to be complete by the end of 2017.

Stadium upgrade progressing well The upgrade to the Stadium is moving quickly with the 2,200-seat retractable grandstands currently being manufactured and demolition of the southern end of the building almost complete. The competition drop-in netball court is on order and the new 150sqm corporate box is in the final stages of design. Meetings with Netball Australia and Channel Nine are also underway to finalise TV broadcast requirements for lighting and camera positions. Construction will cease for the examination period and then works will resume to meet the February 2017 deadline. It’s exciting times at the Sports Precinct which will result in an amazing new venue to showcase the University of the Sunshine Coast to the rest of the country.

Brasserie and Café C lead the way in sustainability USC is proud of its reputation as a leading institution in sustainability and this extends to its campus food outlets. Café C and the Brasserie work hard to prioritise local businesses and use companies such as Eumundi Food Company for cakes and desserts, Queensland Yogurt Company, Coldpress Coffee out of Nambour and Simply Pies from Kunda Park. All fresh meat and poultry are also Queensland products and that delicious Brasserie salmon? Sustainably farmed in Tasmania. Finally, all packaging is either biodegradable, compostable or recyclable and any food scraps are fed into the OSCA on-site composting apparatus to turn into nutritious fertilizer for the University gardens. So when you grab a coffee or eat at the Brasserie or Café C, feel good that the University is not only supporting local, but trying to be sustainable in all aspects of its operations.

Original owner excited about growth of Sippy Downs campusAfter reading USC’s 20-year celebration book Visions, Jack Townson was excited to see the growth of the University and contacted Marketing & External Engagement (M&EE) to have a tour of the campus. As the original owner of the 100 acre cane farm that once stood where USC’s main campus is today, Jack is one person who can really appreciate how the University has grown over the years and changed the landscape of the Sunshine Coast. Jack was accompanied on the tour by his son Andy, daughter-in-law Michelle, Mark Bradley from C&C and Julie Schomberg from M&EE.

Three facts you might not know about Jack’s history are:1. Jack sold the farm to the Queensland

Government in 1986.2. The land was originally intended as an

industrial area before the Government changed their plans a year later.

3. The Townson name can still be found on campus in the form of Jack’s daughter-in-law, Michelle Townson, who has worked in Venues & Catering for the past 14 years.
