If winter weather conditionsallow it, six athletes will wearTanager red and white in theState "A" Wrestling Tournamentat the Watertown Civic Arenawhen competition begins thismorning.

Vermillion, standingseventh as a team in nine-school Region 2A, surgedupward on the final night ofthat tournament at Sioux FallsLincoln last week and earned afourth-place finish with 87team points, leapfroggingahead of Harrisburg (84),Dakota Valley (82), Lincoln(76), Tea Area (41) andLennox (35).

Washington overpoweredthe field for the regional titlewith 193.5 points, followed byBrandon Valley at 159.5 andYankton at 118.5.

The Tanagers claimed twoindividual regional championsin Regan Bye and Brett Bye; athird-place wrestler in CarterKratz, and three fourth-placemen in Kyle Seibel, BrandonHertz and Seth Heine.

Advancing to the state meetrequired no worse than afourth-place finish.

Here is how each Tanagerexperienced the regional meet:

145: Regan ByeBye dominated Brady Dam,

Dakota Valley, 11-4 in the firstround and edged GrantDougherty, Brandon Valley, 7-6,in the semis. For hischampionship Bye decisionedYankton’s Matt Huber, 6-5. Inthe final state ratings Huber hadbeen ranked fifth in the state,Bye sixth and Doughertyseventh.

152: Brett ByeThe state’s top-rated man in

his class, the once-beaten Byepinned Lincoln’s Joe Weaver in3:05 and did the same to Josh

Goeman, Lennox, in 3:59. Forhis championship Byeoutmanned Wyatt Winter,Brandon Valley, 6-1. Winter wasranked eighth in the stateratings.

138: Carter KratzKratz began with a 3:37 pin

over Washington’s OrlandoRamierez and continued inthe quarterfinals with a 1:21pin over Brock Stein, Lennox.Kratz sustained an 11-5semifinal loss to Lincoln’s

Tanager boys clinch No. 2 seedBy Parker Knox

Even though each of the four teamsin boys basketball District 8A has agame yet to play before the regularseason ends, there is nothing to begained and nothing to be lost foranyone, at least so far as districtpairings are concerned.

Dakota Valley High School hasearned the right to host opening nightof the tournament next Thursday, Feb.28, by achieving the best record in theregular season. The Panthers stand at14-5 with a game yet to play tonightagainst Lennox.

Vermillion has clinched the No. 2seed with an 11-8 mark heading intotonight’s regular-season finale at homeagainst Canton. The Tanagers will opennext Thursday’s District 8A semifinalround against third-seed Elk Point-Jefferson, 7-12 going into its gameagainst West Central tonight.

Dakota Valley’s opening opponentwill be fourth-seed Beresford. TheWatchdogs are 5-14 pending a gamethis weekend against Tea Area.

Next Thursday’s winners will playfor the district title two nights later onMarch 2 at the home court of thehigher remaining seed.

The Tanagers hope to regain a bit ofmomentum for district play with avictory tonight against Canton in thefinal home game for the team’s seniors.Canton has a 12-7 record that includeswins over Harrisburg, Lennox, WestCentral, EP-J, Flandreau Indians andTri-Valley twice, among others and asplit with Dell Rapids.

Most of the C-Hawk defeats havecome at the hands of the area’s bestsquads, including Madison, Sioux Falls

Christian, Tea Area and Dakota Valleytwice.

Canton stands as the No. 2 seed inits District 7A behind Tea Area andahead of Harrisburg and Lennox.

Vermillion split a pair of games lastweek, dominating Wagner, 48-34, butlosing to Madison, 69-44.

The loss to the Bulldogs left theTanagers at 5-3 in the final season ofBig 8 Conference play, two of the lossescoming at the hands of unbeatenconference champ Madison and theother to Harrisburg.

Jayce Huska led the Tanagers with 12points against Madison, which led athalftime 42-29.

Against Wagner the Tanagers wenton a 17-0 run in the second period toopen up the contest. That streakconcluded with a pretty feed fromCarter Andre to Anthony Leber for ascore and then two baskets by Andrehimself.

Both teams struggled offensively inthe third period as the Tanagers heldserve by outpointing the Red Raiders 8-5. The Tanager defense held Wagnerscoreless from the field in that perioduntil the last minute of the quarter.From a 41-21 lead at that point, it wassmooth sailing the rest of the way forVHS.

J.T. Sorensen’s 14-point, 10-reboundperformance led Vermillion to its win.Tanner Anderson contributed eightpoints, 10 rebounds and two assists.Andre finished with eight points aswell.

Tanner Settles had five points withfour assists, Nick Jensen four pointswith seven boards, Austin Krier fourpoints, Leber four and Ethan Jamesone.

Alyson Johnsen and TarynTwite have been leadingBeresford's girls basketballvarsity for five seasons, so itwas no surprise that it wasthey who took immediatecontrol of the game and ledtheir Watchdogs to a 51-27win over Vermillion in theDistrict 8A semifinals on theirhome court Tuesday.

The loss ended the season forthe defending district andregional champion Tanagers,who fell distantly behind earlyand never threatened to rally.

Johnsen, who had a 17-pointgame that included five three-point field goals, drilled the firsttwo of those five treys to openthe game. After a Josie Huberthree-point play cut the gap to6-3, Twite, who finished with11, took her turn with a two-point basket and a three-pointerof her own. Suddenly it was 11-3 at that point and 15-5 afterthe quarter, and basically thatwas the ballgame.

A Twite trey opened thesecond quarter in which the

Watchdogs outscored theTanagers 17-5, so it was 32-10 atthe intermission. While theTanagers enjoyed an 11-pointthird quarter, that was morethan offset by 15 Watchdogpoints, including three moreJohnsen three-pointers. Thefourth quarter saw everybodyfor both teams see some courttime since the game's outcomehad long since been decided.

Vermillion's only starter whoreturns next year, junior JosieHuber, led the Tanagers inscoring as she has done allseason with a 13-point game.Allison Heine and MackenzieHuber had five points each,Courtney Johnson two, BlairGilkyson one and Tori Gregoireone.

Both teams had come intothe district tournament onthree-game losing streaks, but itwas Beresford, who earned thehome game as the district's No.1 seed, who was able to right itsship and do so quickly. TheWatchdogs advanced to thechampionship game with a 15-6record.
