Gay roles may soon become the ‘in thing’

Haleem Khan is a Tollywood actor and Kuchipudi dancer. In an interaction with Showville, theactor-dancer explains the reasons why he chose to play the controversial character and thechanges that he would like to see in the attitude of the masses. It’s just acting. By essaying the role of a thief, one doesn’t become a thief! It’s only in acting that youget to portray different roles, which gives a wide dimension to your personality.

When I was offered the role of a gay character in a recent Telugu movie, ‘Nuvvila’, I did take it,though after much contemplation. You can’t mistake a person’s real life personality with what yousee on screen. If not now, when will the south Indian audience ever think on broad lines?

Bollywood has already introduced this theme successfully, with the main lead portraying gaycharacters. After all, we are here to provide some mirth. Entertainment is the mainstay in films ofthis genre. I don’t think I will get only that kind of role; even if I get I will still take it up. If I ever caredfor public opinion, I wouldn’t have taken it up in the first place.

I expect people to be mature and progressive. After all, we are in the 21st century. And, who knows, gay roles may soon become the ‘in thing’ in Telugu!

As far as the stigma attached to such roles, and facing the society without being looked at oddly, isconcerned, I’m a trained Kuchipudi dancer and I specialise in the female impersonation. I am quiteused to it—dressing and acting like a woman. After years of dancing like a woman, the bodylanguage somehow creeps into your cells. It is not easy to shake it off.

When for the first time in Tollywood a prominent gay character was introduced by director RaviBabu in ‘Nuvvila’, many eyebrows were raised. And precisely that’s what the director too wanted. Tocreate a shock factor and later, to make people understand the genuine issue of being gay. To bringit out of the closet, keep it in front of everyone and then question, “What’s wrong?”

Well, I was the perfect fit for this character. The casting director knew it all along and persuaded mefor many days to accept the role. Once I agreed, I put my heart and soul into the role and peopleappreciated my performance. The character too had substance. It was well-etched.

People should understand and be supportive, not look at them as outcaste or untouchables. It is justa personal preference. Leave it at that. Accept if you can. If you can’t, resist from passingjudgments. This message comes through in the film; the parents not only accepting, but also

offering to get them married.

Shailu (my character) and his boyfriend’s wedding in the film contained a lot of mirth, but there is anunderlying message which the director succeeded in conveying.

Social approval, which gay society longs for, may not be granted immediately, but slowly, peoplewill start thinking positively about the gay factor, with more such social messages coming in. Afterthis film’s release, gays too are getting the much-needed reassurance. Anything is possible throughfilms, the most powerful medium for the masses.
