Section 4 IP GATEWAY FOR THE UNITe

IP SYSTEMS

4.1 GENERAL

This section describes the UNITe IP Gateway function, including its purpose, the communication process for both direct and remote connection, and the physical connection for both direct and remote communication. This section also describes the messages generated by the IP gateway software, and provides a list and an explanation of the messages and troubleshooting instructions.

4.2 WHAT IS THE IP GATEWAY FUNCTION?

The UNITe IP system’s IP Gateway software, installed on a PC connected to the MPD card of the UNITe IP system, enables external applications to access any resource in the UNITe IP system. The IP Gateway software supports communication between the external application and the UNITe IP system resource.

With the IP Gateway connection, anything in the IP realm can speak to any device in the UNITe IP system as if it is another device in the UNITe IP system.

4.11 IP GATEWAY WITH A PERMANENT CONNECTION TO THE INTERNET

4.11.1 Coordinating with the LAN managerThe IP Gateway server should be c onnected to the Internet in the same manner as any other server (for example, an e-mail server).

Validate the following items with the enterprise’s LAN or IP intranet manager:

• The LAN/intranet manager must provide a public, legal, and fixed IP address for the IP Gateway server.

• Check with the LAN manager that the enterprise’s router and fire-wall will provide TCP/IP connection to the IP Gateway server.

NOTEIf the enterprise cannot provide a public, legal, andfixed IP address with router and firewall protection forthe IP Gateway server, then you have to connect theIP Gateway server to the Internet via a modem (seeSection 4.12).

4.11.2 Connecting the IP Gateway server to the InternetTo connect the IP Gateway server to the Internet:

1. Install the of IP Gateway as a server (see Section 3.2.1).2. Connect the PC to the enterprise LAN.3. Make the physical connection between the UNITe IP system and

the IP Gateway server (see Sections 4.4 through 4.8).- The IP Gateway application will start automatically.- The IP Gateway will continually attempt to connect to the UNITe

IP system until it is successful.- You can also make a manual connection (see Section 4.8).

4.11.3 Obtaining the IP address of the IP Gateway serverWhen the IP Gateway server is connected to the Internet via a LAN or IP intranet, you must provide the users of the remote application with the IP Gateway address. They need this information to connect their IP application with the IP Gateway server.

Obtain the host name or IP address of the server housing the IP Gateway from the manager of the LAN or IP intranet. The IP Gateway port is always 7000 .

4.11.4 Connecting a remote application to the IP Gateway server

The remote user must connect to the IP Gateway server as follows:1. Connect to the Internet.2. Run the application that you want (for example, the Software

Download).3. Enter the IP address of the IP Gateway server in the window that

requests it (for example, see Figure5-6).

4.12 IP GATEWAY WITH A TEMPORARY CONNECTION TO THE INTERNET

4.12.1 Connecting a remote application to the IP Gateway If the enterprise does not have a permanent connection to the Internet, you need to connect to the Internet via a modem each time that you run the IP Gateway.

To connect between the IP Gateway server and the Internet via a modem:1. Connect the PC with the remote application to the Internet.2. The person running the remote application must contact the person

in charge of the IP Gateway server and request that the IP Gateway server be connected to the Internet. Keep the connection with the contact person open until you complete step 6.

3. The contact person at the IP Gateway server must go to the server and connect it to the Internet.

4. The contact person at the IP Gateway server must tell you the dynamic IP address of the IP Gateway for the current connection. This can be done as described in Section 4.12.2.

5. Run the application.6. When running the application, enter the current, dynamic

IP address of the IP Gateway server in the FOLDER PROPERTIES Dialog box (for example, see Figure 5-6).

7. If the connection with the IP Gateway is successful, you can end the conversation with the contact person at the IP Gateway server.

8. After you finish using the application, call the contact person at the IP Gateway server again, and ask to terminate the Internet session.

4.12.2 Checking the IP addressAfter the IP Gateway server has been provided with an IP address, you should check the IP address of the IP Gateway server.

4.13 DEBUGGING

During all steps in running the IP Gateway application, log files of messages are written for use in debugging. The name of these file are: comm.log and comm.bin. The comm.log and comm.bin files will not renew at the start of each session, but the system will continue to write to these files until the files reach their maximum size. The comm.log file will then be renamed comm.old and a new comm.log file will be created. The comm.bin file will then be renamed commold.bin and a new comm.bin file will be created. The previous commold.bin file will be lost. If there is a malfunction, save these files under different names, s o that these logs will be available for debugging.

Section 5SOFTWARE DOWNLOAD

5.1 GENERAL

This section provides a description of the software download function, its file structure, and how it operates. This section also describes the software download reports, debugging procedures, and messages, including a list of the messages and troubleshooting instructions.

5.2 WHAT IS THE SOFTWARE DOWNLOAD FUNCTION?

5.2.1 Firmware upgradeThe UNITE IP Software Download is a program that enables you to upgrade the firmware of devices in the UNITE IP system, including the Avanti family of telephone sets and their add-on modules, without having to touch the devices or their chips. You can even upgrade the firmware from a remote location.

Software download may be done via:• A local PC, connected to the RS232 port on the MPD card;• Remote PC with a modem, by dialing to the customer’s modem;• Remote PC connected via an Intranet or a LAN (Local Area Network);• Remote PC connected via the Internet.

5.2.2 File managerThe UNITE IP Software Download application provides the user with an easy to use method of managing the resource f iles in the Software Download library using a file management system that includes different level directories and files stored within the directories (see Section5.3.5) following the file management concepts of the MS Windows Explorer.

The file management program of the Software Download is designed so that the user will be able to easily determine the version of the software currently in use on every resource, at each site, and for each group of sites (private network of UNITE IP systems).

Page 40: USER MANUAL - H · USER MANUAL 53-130-4500/1 Issue 1 . 53-130-4500/1, Issue 1 ... Apache Apache Micro Peripherals Pentium Intel Corporation Hayes Hayes Microcomputer Products, Inc

5-2

5.2.3 Highlights of the Software Download applicationThe Software Download application provides the user with the following:

• Management of software downloaded to networks of UNITE IP systems or a number of individual UNITE IP systems (projects);

• Management of software downloaded UNITE IP installation sites (folders);

• Management of current software programs downloaded to resources at the site;

• File security via a password;• Download of resource f iles to the required devices;• Selection of the specific resource on which you want to download

the software;• Choice of whether to interrupt active resources when downloading

software (for example, taking a telephone out of service during a call);

• Notification per resource of whether the software download was successful or not successful;

• A history record of all software downloaded to a site.

5.3 FILE MANAGEMENT

5.3.1 What is a resource file?Each resource file is a file that contains a specific version of the software code for a particular device.

The resource file name indicates the type of resource to which it applies and the version number. For example, SW_st30_01_1B.hex indicates that the software is for the station class 30 (Avanti) and that the software release is 01.1B.

WARNINGDo not change the name of the resource file. If youdo, the Software Download procedure will not work.

The resource files that you download to upgrade the UNITE IP system resources (devices) are hexadecimal files with .hex suffixes. Each type of device has its own .hex file. Initially there will be two files:

• File sw_st30_xx_yy.hex: containing the Avanti telephone data; • File sw_ad30_xx_yy.hex: containing the data for the Avanti tele-

phone add-on modules.

Page 41: USER MANUAL - H · USER MANUAL 53-130-4500/1 Issue 1 . 53-130-4500/1, Issue 1 ... Apache Apache Micro Peripherals Pentium Intel Corporation Hayes Hayes Microcomputer Products, Inc

Section 5: SOFTWARE DOWNLOAD

5-3

5.3.2 File management conceptUsing the Software Download application’s MS Explore-type file man-agement system, it is recommended that you build a hierarchy of:

• Projects: Create a folder for each group of sites that are associ-ated with each other (for example, a private network);

• Site: Create a folder for each customer site (each UNITE IP system);

• Files: Add a software download resource file to a site folder for each resource (type of device, for example Avanti telephones).

The user receives new versions of the resource files, as sent by Telrad Networks. There is a folder called Versions where you have to store the resource files that you get from Telrad Networks.

It is recommended that each site folder contain only one file for each type of resource, which indicates the current software version for the device.

Each site folder should contain files with the version of the software that is currently downloaded for each resource at that UNITE IP system site.

Whenever you install a new software version for any resource, you should delete the resource file containing the previous software version from that site folder.

Basic functions: The user can:• For project folders: Create, Select, Rename, View contents, and

Delete projects.• For site folders: Add, Select, Rename, View contents, and Delete

site folders for a project.• For files in a folder: Add, Select, and Delete files.

NOTEThe creating, renaming, viewing, and deleting ofprojects, folders, and files is explained inSection5.3.5 .
