USF Basketball Game NotesHead Coach Kyle SmithHamilton College ‘92 Career Record ............................................................. 164-119 (9th season)Overall Record at USF ....................................................63-37 (3rd season)WCC Games ....................................................................28-22(3rd season)

This is Kyle Smith’s third season as the head coach at USF and his ninth as a head coach. Following back-to-back 20 win campaigns, including two-straight trips to the post season, Smith signed a well earned contract extension that will keep him on the Hilltop well into the next decade. In two years at the helm of the men’s basketball program, Smith has exceeded even his own expectations. The Dons have gone 42-30 overall, including 19-17 in the West Coast Conference. His .583 winning percentage at the Hilltop is fifth-best in program history for a head coach through two seasons, topping Naismith Hall of Fame names such as Pete Newell (.509), Phil Wolpert (.400) and other legendary Dons’ head coaches such as Pete Paletta (.509), Phil Vukicevich (.568), and Jim Brovelli (.410). Smith’s 42 wins after two seasons ranks fourth-most in USF history, behind Pete Berry (49 wins), Dan Belluomini (45 wins), and Bob Gaillard (43 wins). In posting back-to-back 20-win seasons, Smith be-comes the first Dons head coach to accomplish that feat since the 1981-82 seasons. He has guided the Dons to consecutive postseason tournament appearances, the second culminating with the Dons’ first postseason tournament championship appearance since USF took home the NCAA Championship in 1956.Under Smith, the Dons have excelled in the classroom as well. They finished last fall with a team GPA of 3.36, including 12 players with GPAs of 3.0 or higher, and six who made the Dean’s List. Nate Renfro turned in a 4.0 GPA for the Dons. Five current and past players have earned WCC All-Academic Honors in the last two seasons. The Dons have also been leaders in the community, annually partnering with E-Hoops, an inclusive basketball program that trains and develops kids through the game of basketball, including children with special needs.

ASSISTANTSKyle Smith is pleased to bring back the core of his assistants who have helped the Dons win 43 games in two seasons. Associate head coach Derrick Phelps begins his fifth season on Kyle Smith’s staff. Phelps works closely with USF’s backcourt. A member of the North Carolina 1993 National Championship team, Phelps also takes a lead role in scouting and international recruiting. Associate head coach Todd Golden, a former standout player at Saint Mary’s College returned to Smith’s staff when he came out west. Prior to USF, Golden spent two seasons at Auburn under head coach Bruce Pearl. Golden serves as USF’s recruiting and defensive coordinator. In his third season at USF and seventh season under Smith is assistant coach Kevin Hovde. The Richmond graduate serves as the Dons offensive coordinator. In his first year with the program is Director of Operations Jonathan Safir. Prior to joining the Dons, Safir was a member of Columbia’s coaching staff serving in the same role since 2016.

What’s a Don“Don” is an acronym for De Origen Noble, which translates to “of noble origin” and is a Spanish title given only to a noble person of political, social or official distinction. The name references the early history of California and San Francisco, which was marked by the exploits of the adventuresome and swashbuckling Spanish Dons. All USF students and alumni are of noble origin who share in the long passion for learning in order to better understand the past, clarify the present and anticipate the future. Thus, we are proud to call ourselves the Dons. USF’s mascot is named Don Francisco, in honor of Don Francisco de Haro, the first mayor of San Francisco.

USF Basketball Game Notes

From the FieldThe Dons are fifth in the WCC, shooting 47.0 percent from the field (783-for-1666). Leading the team is senior Matt McCarty who is shooting 62.8 which is third in the WCC. Fellow center Jimbo Lull is fourth in the conference at 60.9 percent from the floor. •The Dons have shot 50.0 or better 10 times this sea-son - they managed to shoot 50.0 or better six times in 39 games in 2017-18.

Scoring 70 or More Under Kyle SmithIn the Kyle Smith era, the Dons have scored 70 or more 64 times. In those contests they are 50-14. This season, the Dons are 17-4 when scoring 70 points. The Dons eclipsed the 70-point plateau at the 1:20 mark when Jordan Rat-inho hit a 3-point field goal against the Cougars to go up 71-68.

Renfro With the TheftIn the win over the Cougars, senior Nate Renfro recorded his 100th career steal. For his brilliant career, he has 101 steals, 120 blocks, 584 rebounds, and 714 points. The 100 steals is 12th all-time.

Spreading Out The MinutesIn the Kyle Smith era, the Dons have routinely spread out the minutes and utilized their entire bench. This year is no different. USF has eight players on its roster that have played 11 or more minutes with an additional six playing three or more minutes. Only two players are averaging more than 30.0 minutes per game Frankie Ferrari (33.3) and Charles Minlend (30.0) neither are in the top-10 in the WCC in minutes per game.

Non-Conference RecordThe Dons 12-2 mark in non-conference play is their best finish in non-conference play in the Kyle Smith era. It also marks the top finish by wins and winning percentage since the 1999-00 team when USF wrapped up non-conference play 12-1. Under Smith, the Dons are 30-10 in non-confer-ence play, they went 10-3 in ‘16-17, last year they went 8-3 in non-conference play.

Ferrari Named to Senior Class Award Watch ListSenior guard Frankie Ferrari was selected as one of 30 candidates nationwide for the Senior Class Award List. The list of 30 will be whittled down to 10 finalists in Febru-ary. Ferrari is off to a fantastic start this season, averaging 11.3 ppg and 6.6 assists per game. His assist to turnover ratio is currently ninth-best in the nation.

The Return of Charles Minlend Redshirt sophomore guard Charles Minlend has been fantastic for the Dons. After sitting out last season with a shoulder injury, Minlend has scored in double figures in 22 of 23 games this season. He has 37 career double-figures games. For his career he has 678 points, the 329 points he scored in his freshman campaign ranks eighth all-time by a freshman at USF. The Dons are 16-6 when Minlend scores in double figures this season and 28-11 overall.

Dons 36th In Scoring MarginThe Dons are currently 33rd in the nation in scoring margin at +10.5. This season the Dons have 11 wins by 15 or more. They opened the year with four-straight wins by 32 or more.

Defending The ThreeThe Dons continue to put the clamps on opponents 3-point shooting this season. USF is currently 29th in the nation in 3-point field goal defense, holding their foes to 30.6 from beyond the arc.

USF Basketball Game Notes92nd Season of Dons Basketball The Dons first official season was in 1923-24 when they were known as “The Grey Fog.” All-time, USF is 1384-1007 (.579 W-L%). The Dons didn’t play basketball in the 1944-45 season and in 1982-83 and ‘83-84 seasons. The Dons have had 58 winning seasons, including 22 20-win seasons.

Dons and the NETWith the latest NET (NCAA Evaulation Tool) rankings out, the Dons are 52nd. USF still ranks ahead of 11 of the 12 Pac-12 teams and is the sixth highest ranked team in the West.

Dons Picked to Finish Fourth in the WCC For the second-straight year, the University of San Francis-co men’s basketball team was picked to finish fourth in the annual West Coast Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Gonzaga took home the top spot in the poll receiving nine first place votes for 81 points. In second was Saint Mary’s with 68 points, followed by BYU with 67 points and the re-maining first place vote. The Dons garnered 57 points, fol-lowed by San Diego (52), Pacific (39), Loyola Marymount (31), Pepperdine (22), Santa Clara (18) and Portland (15).

Dons Return Loaded SquadThe Dons bring back a loaded squad for the 2018-19 sea-son. USF returns four starters and 10 letterwinners from last year’s team that won 22 games and advanced to the championship round of the CBI. Returning for the Dons is 66% of its scoring from last season, including four of its top six scorers. Highlighting that list of returners is senior guard Frankie Ferrari (446 pts), junior guard Jordan Ratinho (416 pts), Matt McCarthy (303 pts) and Nate Renfro (303 pts). The Dons also will get back sophomore Charles Minlend who redshirted last year.

Foreign Flair With the addition of freshman forward Dyzmitry Ryuny the Dons have four foreign born players. Ryuny hails from Minks, Belarus, he joins Taavi Jurtatamm, a native of Tallinn, Estonia, Remu Raitanen (Helsinki, Finland), and Matt Mc-Carthy (Melbourne, Australia).

Long Road TripEarlier this year, the Dons left the country for first time in the regular season traveling to Belfast, Northern Ireland to play in the second annual College Basketball Hall of Fame Bel-fast Classic. The 5,030 miles is the longest traveled by the Dons for a regular season contest. In the regular season the Dons remaining longest road trips will be to Spokane (873 miles), Provo, Utah (778 miles) and San Diego (501 miles).

Excel In the ClassroomOne of the Four Pillars of Success at USF is Excel In the Classroom and last semester that’s exactly what the Dons did, turning in a team GPA of 3.40 in the fall. The Dons had 11 players earn a GPA of 3.2 or higher with Remu Raitenen, Jordan Ratinho, Nate Renfro and Dzmitry Ryuny earning per-fect 4.0 GPAs.• Four Dons earned First Team WCC All-Academic Honors: Matt McCarthy, Charles Minlend, Jordan Ratinho, Nate Renfro with Jimbo Lull earning Honorable Mention honors. • Nate Renfro was named CoSIDA District 8 First Team All-Academic Honors.
