heAD cOAch Rex WALteRS A new era began April 7, 2008 when the University of San Francisco named Rex Walters head coach of the men’s basketball program. The former Kan-sas star and NBA veteran hit the ground running and entering his third season on the Hilltop, every player on the 2010-11 roster was recruited to USF by Walters and his coaching staff. San Francisco has added talented size and versatile perimeter players from outstand-ing prep programs and all look prepared to follow Walters’ challenge: Play hard. Play smart. Play together. San Francisco made strides during the second year of its rebuilding process under Coach Walters and showed its resiliency by posting a solid showing in a much-improved West Coast Confer-ence. USF closed the league campaign on a tear, winning four of five highlighted by a thrilling 81-77 overtime upset victory against No. 13/8 Gonzaga. The Dons seized a 72-70 road overtime win at San Diego the next time out and then swept the final homestand of the year against the Lions and Pepperdine. San Francisco posted its third and final overtime triumph in a 71-68 cliffhanger at ancient Bay Area rival Santa Clara. San Francisco posted its best league record (7-7) and finish (fourth) since 2007. Walters’ coaching pedigree began as a player, receiving tutelage from some of the game’s legendary coaches. Roy Wil-liams at the University of Kansas and the NBA’s Chuck Daly, Larry Brown and Pat Riley all mentored Walters as a player. Walters starred for two seasons at Kansas and in 68 starts under Williams, averaged 15.6 points per game. KU combined to go 56-12 overall, won back-to-back Big Eight titles, capped by a trip to the 1993 Final Four. A two-time All-Big Eight team pick, Walters was the 1993 Big Eight Male Athlete of the Year. After graduating from Kansas in 1993 with a B.S. in education, Walters was selected by New Jersey as the 16th overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft. He went on to play seven seasons in total with the Nets, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat. Walters and his wife, Deanna, have five children: Addison (14), Drew (12), Riley (9), Gunner (7), and welcomed Ace Jordan in July of 2008.

USF HEAD TO SPOKANE FOR BIG SHOWDOWN: After registering its biggest road win of the season, USF concludes its Pacific Northwest swing with a Saturday visit to Spokane for a second place showdown against defending league champion Gonzaga. GREEN LIGHT: Junior guard Rashad Green continues to contribute for the Dons during his second season on the Hilltop. The Manhattan transfer scored a career-high 21 points at Colorado State (11/29/09) and matched it with 21 points, nine rebounds and eight assists at Pepperdine (1/29/11). The New Yorker scored 17 points against Hampton (12/30/10). Green leads the Dons in scoring during the WCC season with 14.6 points to go along with 6.0 rebounds. In USF’s 68-62 win against Santa Clara (2/5/11), Green scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Dons to the sweep of the Broncos and captured WCC Player of the Week honors in the process. Game No. 26 Recap - PortlandDons DIsPatCH PIlots 82-73: USF traveled to the Pacific Northwest looking to stay in the hunt for the West Coast Confer-ence Championship and did so with a huge 82-73 triumph Thurs-day night against Portland in the Chiles Center. The Dons (14-12, 8-3 WCC) remain tied for second in the league standings with Gonzaga and hand the Pilots (18-9, 5-6 WCC) just their second home loss of the season.

With sophomore forward Perris Blackwell unavailable for San Francisco, junior forward Angelo Caloiaro really seized the of-fensive initiative scoring 18 points, including four 3-pointers, to go along with seven rebounds in 31 minutes. Sophomore guard Michael Williams also had 18 for the Dons with five rebounds and three assists.

Junior guard Rashad Green added 13 points, six rebounds and made key plays on both ends of the court for USF. Freshman guard Cody Doolin also had a nice night with 14 points, five re-bounds and two assists.

With the score tied at 66-66 with 4:36 remaining in regulation, USF made its move and used a 16-7 run to secure the regular season series sweep against Portland for the first time since 2008.

San Francisco shot .472 (25-53) from the field for the game, including a .360 (9-25) rate from long distance. Portland shot .450 (27-60) from the field and hit .450 (9-20) from 3-point range. One of the best free throw shooting teams in the league, coming in at .741 on the year, the Pilots shot a rugged .588 (10-17) at the stripe. The Dons managed a .657 (23-35) rate.

QUOTING WALTERS: “It was a really good team win. A lot of guys really stepped up for us. It shows a team effort by a lot of guys. I thought Angelo really stepped up for us, Moustapha (Diarra) didn’t have a great numbers night, but made his presence felt. Mikey Williams didn’t have the best shooting might, but made an adjustment and really attacked the basket. I thought Rashad Green made some big, big plays down the stretch for us. Our guys kept believing that they could get it done. Every guy in that locker room contributed to it.”

PILOT PONDERINGS: u USF guarantees a winning road record in WCC playu Dons have won 12 of their last 16 versus Portlandu The four road wins are the most by USF since going 5-10 in 2006-07u Angelo Caloiaro now 5th in USF career 3-pointers (116)

JUST HOW YOUNG ARE THE DONS? USF enters the 2010-11 season with just seven years of returning Division I experience, six coming under the direction of head coach Rex Walters. According to a survey conducted by the University of Kentucky of all Division I programs, the Dons are tied for the seventh least experienced roster in basketball. The breakdown follows. 4: Eastern Washington; 5: Sacramento State, UT-Arlington; 6: Idaho, Radford, Cal State Fullerton; 7: San Francisco, UC Riverside, Louisiana-Monroe. Seven schools reported eight years of Division I experience. Overall, 22 schools reported less than 10 years of experience.

CODY DOOLIN ON POINT FOR THE DONS: Freshman guard Cody Doolin continues to impress in the USF backcourt. Doolin has started every game for the Green and Gold this season, and ranks third on the team in minutes (31.5). The Texan scored a career-high 23 points, including the game-winning 3-point play against Gonzaga (1/22/11). This season, Doolin averages 7.3 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.

CARDIAC KIDS: USF can never be accused of being boring or even necessarily doing things the easy way. Off to their best West Coast Conference start (7-3) since 2002, the Dons have trailed at halftime of a whopping eight of their 10 league games. USF has held just two intermission leads during league play - a 31-28 lead against Portland (1/20/11) and a 31-17 advantage against San Diego (2/10/11). The Dons overcame an 11 point, 35-24 halftime deficit at Santa Clara (1/8/11).

MORE JAYHAWKS ON THE BENCH: USF head coach Rex Walters elevated Justin Bauman to assistant coach for the 2010-11 season and also added former Kansas team captain Michael Lee to the bench. Bauman spent his first two seasons at USF as the Director of Basketball Operations. Both Bauman and Lee were inducted into the Kansas Jayhawks Athletic Hall of Fame for their connection with the 2003-04 NCAA Elite Eight team. Coach Bauman served as the head student assistant for the Jayhawks in 2003-04 under Bill Self, while Coach Lee served as a James Naismith team captain during his junior campaign.

DONS BASKETBALL BLOGGING: USF will be blogging during home games throughout the 2010-11 season using Cover It Live. Fans can access the in-game blog via the official Facebook page of USF Athletics here: http://on.fb.me/USFDonsFB. Click to become a fan today of the official USF Facebook page and Go Dons!

A RETURN TO THE 90S: USF’s run and gun offense was showcased in its 97-76 win against Seattle U. (11/12/10) in the 2010-11 season opener. The Dons posted its first 90-plus point night against a Division I opponent since a 93-63 win against Sacramento State (11/17/07). The Dons set a program record with a 129-64 win against Holy Names (1/2/10) and also posted a 92-66 win vs. Dominican (11/16/09).

2011-12 cAmPAiGN The University of San Francisco men’s basketball team is proud to an-nounce the signing of 6-foot-9 forward Mark Tollefsen from Danville, Calif. Tollefsen, a senior at San Ramon Valley in Danville, signed his National Letter of Intent (NLI) today on the first day of the early signing period. After signing seven players last year, USF will sign just one player this season. “Once Mark makes the transition to the collegiate game, you will see a young man that understands how to play the game offensively,” USF head coach Rex Walters said. “He will guard multiple positions and will be used a lot of dif-ferent ways. We are very excited to get a young man that comes from a great program and great parents.” The Bay Area product played a key role in San Ramon Valley’s 28-4 season last year. The Wolves shared the East Bay Athletic League title with De La Salle and played its way to the CIF Division I Northern California semi-finals where it lost by three points to De La Salle. Tollefsen averaged 9.2 points and 7.3 rebounds last season for the Wolves shooting 54 percent from the field and 45 percent from behind the arc. He also av-eraged 5.4 offensive rebounds a game. “Mark is a long/lean athletic hybrid forward,” Walters said. “He’s a very skilled passer, that can handle the ball, shoot with range and can play three to four positions on the court.” Tollefsen played for the Lakeshow 17 AAU team this past summer, with his team winning the San Francisco City Tournament championship.

November 29, 2010(San Bruno, CA) - The West Coast Confer-ence has announced its television schedule for the 2011 West Coast Conference men’s basketball season. In all, 44 of 56 regular season WCC games will be televised on a national, regional, or local level.

“We’re thrilled to be able to showcase WCC basketball to such a large audience during the conference season,” West Coast Con-ference Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich said. “This is an exciting time to be a part of the West Coast Conference. Not only are we coming off one of the best years in con-ference history, we once again have one of the top television agreements in the country thanks to our partnerships with Comcast, Cox, ESPN and Fox.”

Once again, the West Coast Conference has worked with partners Comcast and Channel 4 San Diego to create a regional syndication package for a number of WCC games. Most games will be broadcast live in the markets of both participating teams, including five of the top 55 markets in the nation: the San Francisco Bay Area, Sac-ramento, Portland, Seattle and San Diego. The Comcast games will air regionally on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, Com-cast SportsNet California, and Comcast SportsNet Northwest.

In all, the combination of regional sports networks, KHQ-TV in Spokane, and Chan-nel 4 San Diego will televise 31 West Coast Conference games in 2011. Additionally, the ESPN family of networks (ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU) will televise 13 WCC

games to a national audience.

The regional telecasts kick off Saturday, January 8 when USF visits Santa Clara in a game televised on CSN California. That same night, Portland visits Gonzaga (FSN Northwest), and Saint Mary’s travels to Pepperdine (Prime Ticket).

Last season, four West Coast Conference teams appeared in postseason play for just the second time in league history. Saint Mary’s advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 after winning the Zappos.com West Coast Conference Basketball Championship; Gonzaga won its 10th straight regular season WCC title; and both Portland and Loyola Marymount participated in the Col-legeInsider.com tournament.

USF REMEMBERSQUINTIN DAILEY Former University of San Francisco All-Amer-ican Quintin Dailey passed away November 8, 2010. Dailey was 49. Most recently, Dailey has devoted his time working with at-risk youth in the Las Vegas area as a supervisor at the Park-dale Community Center. A prep standout at Cardinal Gibbons in Baltimore, Dailey made an immediate impact at USF for head coach Dan Belluomini, av-eraging 13.6 points per game as a freshman and helping the Dons to a 22-7 record. One of the most prolific offensive threats in USF and West Coast Conference history, Dailey departed campus after three seasons ranked No. 2 in career scoring at 1,841 points (20.5) and No. 13 on the WCC scor-ing list. Dailey owns the Bay Area Division I single-season scoring record with 755 points (25.2), done as a senior.

WAR MEMORIAL GETS A FACELIFT

During the Summer of 2009, USF Ath-letics honored a remarkable past and prepared for the next generation with a major renovation in War Memori-al Gym. Among a number of improve-ments was the first floor replacement done since the arena opened in 1958-59. Along with the new hardwood floor-ing, the gym is sporting a fresh court design and a new coat of paint from floor to ceiling. The wooden bleachers on the ends of the court were replaced, and new lights were installed.

Upon entering War Memorial Gym, fans will notice a number of other changes, starting with new entranc-es with to the arena, new retired jer-seys hanging above the court, as well as new NCAA and conference champi-onship banners, celebrating the legacy and tradition of USF’s basketball and volleyball programs.

Prior to the 2010-11 season, new lights were added to the facility to further en-hance the fan experience.
