WHAT IS F1000PRIME?

F1000Prime is an in-depth directory of top articles in biology and medicine, as recommended by our Faculty of over 5,000 expert scientists and clinical researchers, assisted by 5,000 associates.

The service covers over 40 disciplines and more than 3,500 journals. Articles are rated and expert commentaries explain their importance.

WHAT IS F1000PRIME?

Launched in 2002, F1000Prime was conceived as a collaboration of 1,000 international Faculty Members. The name stuck even though the Faculty and remit of the services continues to grow.

Faculty recommendations and comments form a fully searchable database, containing more than 145,000 records (as of November 2013), which aims to identify the best research available.

On average, 1,500 new recommendations are contributed by the Faculty each month.

WHAT DO THE FACULTY DO?

Faculty Members (FMs) together with their Associate Faculty Members (AFMs), recommend, score and classify articles for inclusion in F1000Prime's Article Recommendations.

AFMs, who are appointed by individual FMs, also help to scan the tables of contents of all the major general and specialist journals to ensure that the literature in their topic area has been adequately covered.

FMs are peer-nominated and appointed by Faculty Section Heads.

The Faculty identify approximately the top 2% of all published articles in the biology and medical sciences.

F1000 RECOMMENDATIONS AND RESEARCH ASSESSMENT/IMPACT

Research funders including Research Councils UK, the National Science Foundation and Medical Research Council (MRC) increasingly look beyond Journal Impact Factors when assessing research impact.

A 2009 study by the MRC concluded that F1000Prime recommendations are an indicator of future citation impact (http://bit.ly/F1000future).

The Wellcome Trust published in PLOS ONE an analysis of F1000Prime, finding that expert review highlights important papers that bibliometric indicators alone would miss (http://bit.ly/F1000Wellcome).

F1000 regularly provides F1000Prime data to researchers working on bibliometrics, research assessment and impact.

SMARTSEARCH

An intuitive PubMed search tool that ‘learns’ what type of articles are likely to be most relevant to you. Select five or more articles as ‘seeds’ and after a few interactions with the results, you will be alerted to the most relevant articles recently published.

•Covers all of PubMed – not just F1000Prime

•Results improve over time as SmartSearch learns from your interactions and instructions

•Good for finding articles in smaller topic areas

•Seed initial search with any F1000Prime-recommended article with ‘Alerts for similar articles’ button

•And/or create SmartSearch from MyF1000 using any paper(s) in PubMed – including your own

IN ONE OF OUR USER’S WORDS

The SmartSearch result I just received was incredibly important. It pointed me to a paper that had just been pre-released, not even on the journal’s website under the current issue, and the paper was über important for my research findings. In short, the F1000 SmartSearch has been terrific!
