About IT AnalyticsOracle IT Analytics Cloud Service (referred to as IT Analytics) enables you to viewinformation about the availability, capability, and performance of your IT resourcesthrough rich, powerful analytics applications and data explorers.

IT Analytics includes the following applications and data explorers:

Resource Analytics

• Database Resource Analytics: Analyze resource utilization trends of your databasesystems and compare them with available capacity. Perform a side-by-sidecomparison to identify which database consumes more resources and how thetrend of resource consumption has changed. With IT Analytics, you can optimizeyour IT resources by identifying under-utilized and over-utilized resources. Youcan analyze database resources by different dimensions, such as cost center, anddatabase version. You can also plan and forecast future resource usage based oneither a single resource target or a group of targets.

• Middleware Resource Analytics: Analyze the utilization of your middlewareresources, and forecast utilization based on current trends. With IT Analytics, youcan analyze middleware resources by different usage dimensions, such as heap,memory, and CPU.

Read This Before You BeginHere are some basic concepts about Oracle Management Cloud.

A WebLogic domain is a logically related group of WebLogic Server resources.Domains include a special WebLogic Server instance called the AdministrationServer, which is the central point from which you configure and manage all resourcesin the domain. Usually, you configure a domain to include additional WebLogicServer instances called Managed Servers. You deploy Web applications, EJBs, andother resources onto the Managed Servers and use the Administration Server forconfiguration and management purposes only.

Oracle Home refers to a directory where Oracle products are installed, pointed to byan environment variable. Multiple active Oracle Homes can exist on the same host.

WebLogic Server is Oracle’s Java EE application server, part of Oracle FusionMiddleware suite of products, used for building and deploying enterpriseapplications.

A WebLogic Server cluster consists of multiple WebLogic Server instances runningsimultaneously and working together to provide increased scalability and reliability.

Viewing Targets in the IT Analytics WarehouseAs the IT Analytics administrator, you can view the database targets in the ITAnalytics warehouse.

To view the database targets enabled for AWR collection:

1. From the Oracle Management Cloud home page, click the Application Navigatoricon in the top corner of the page.

2. From the Administration group, click the IT Analytics Administration link.

You will be able to view a list of Database targets that have already been added.

Adding Targets to the IT Analytics WarehouseAs an IT Analytics administrator, you can add database targets to the IT Analyticswarehouse for AWR collection.

To add targets, do the following:

1. From the Oracle Management Cloud home page, click the Application Navigatoricon in the upper-right corner of the page.

2. From the Administration group, click the IT Analytics Administration link.

3. From the Analysis Targets page, click Add and select Analysis Targets from thedrop-down list.

4. From the Type drop-down list, select the target category that you want to add.

5. Select one or more targets to add.

Use the Ctrl or Shift keys on your keyboard to select multiple targets.

6. Click Select.

Based on the relationship between target types, there may be targets related to thetarget that you selected. Analysis won’t be complete unless you add the relatedtargets.

7. To view the related targets for the selected targets, select the Group by InitialSelection check box.

The display changes to two panes with the selected targets on top and the relatedtargets below.

8. Click a target in the top pane to view its related targets below.

9. View the related targets and click Add Targets to Warehouse.

Using Oracle IT Analytics Cloud Service, you can view the current trend of IT resourceutilization, and use this trend to forecast your future resource requirements.

As a business analyst or IT Manager, you can use IT Analytics to:

• Analyze resource consumption by various dimensions, such as platform andlifecycle usage.

• Plan for future growth by forecasting consumption of resources by databases andmiddleware systems, and identifying hosts that are likely to run out of capacity.

• Compare resource usage across prior periods to identify unexpected growth.

Read This Before You BeginHere are some common terms and basic concepts about the Resource Analyticsapplications.

Regression is a data mining function that predicts a number. It’s commonly used inprediction and forecasting.

A regression task begins with a data set in which the target values are known. Forexample, a regression model that predicts resource usage can be developed based onobserved data for your middleware and database resources over a period of time. Inthe model build, a regression algorithm estimates the value of the target as a functionof the predictors for each case in the build data. These relationships betweenpredictors and target are summarized in a model, which can then be applied to adifferent data set in which the target values are unknown. Regression Models aretested by computing various statistics that measure the difference between thepredicted values and the expected values.

A linear regression technique can be used if the relationship between the predictorsand the target can be approximated with a straight line.

A non-linear regression is used when the relationship between x and y cannot beapproximated with a straight line.

A channel, in the context of forecasting report based on a given regression model, issimply additional information that may be part of the estimated values. For example,some regression algorithms may also yield confidence levels which indicate thepercentage of confidence that the future values will lie within those boundaries.

Reads or writes of data performed on a disk by software programs generate what iscalled disk I/O. Software applications and database performance is inherently limitedby disk I/O.

The physical data files, logs and other files used by a database are controlled by thedatabase storage subsystem. The database storage utilization shows the amount ofdisk space used by a database or various logical units within the database.

The database interconnect refers to the high-speed, low latency dedicatedcommunication link between the nodes of a database cluster, for example between thenodes of an Oracle Real Application Cluster (RAC) environment.

Analyzing Database ResourcesIT Analytics helps you understand and analyze trends in the utilization of criticaldatabase resources, such as CPU, Memory, I/O, Storage, and Interconnect. You canalso analyze, compare, and contrast resource usage across databases.

Analyzing Database Resource UsageUsing Resource Analytics: Database, you can view your current database resourceutilization by CPU, I/O, Storage, and Interconnect. You can also compare and contrastresource usage between databases, and identify which databases use the mostresources, and are expanding rapidly.

When you log in to the application, the Overview page is displayed. On the Overviewpage, you can view the summary of database resource utilization. To view detailedinformation about each of your critical database resources, click the corresponding tilein the navigation pane.

You can view the following information for each resource (CPU, I/O, Storage,Interconnect):

• Aggregate resource utilization across all databases: View the summary ofresource utilization across all databases, which helps identify points in time wherethere may have been unexpected spikes in resource utilization.

• Resource utilization breakdown by database: View the resource utilization foreach database, which helps compare resource utilization between databases, andidentify servers with under-utilized or over-utilized resources. The size of the cellsshow the volume of resources used by the specific database, while the color of thecells show the rate of change, where red implies the database is growing rapidly,

Analyzing Database Resource Usage by Specific TargetsWhile analyzing the resource usage of your databases, you can filter for specifictargets or choose to view the results for all databases.

To analyze database resource usage by specific targets, complete the following steps:

1. From the application page, click the All Databases drop-down menu, in theupper-left corner of the screen.

2. Select one of the options from the menu.

Available options include the following:

• Select Targets: Clicking this option opens the Select Targets dialog box.

• All Database Targets: Clicking this option selects all servers in your datacenter for analysis.

3. Enter the database name in the Target Name section. Use the Ctrl and Shift keysto select multiple databases.

4. Click Select.

The application loads information for the selected databases.

Note: The database selection applies to all reports within the application.

Analyzing Database Resource Usage by Date RangesYou can specify a time period for which you want to analyze database resource usage.Use the date-picker drop-down menu to set a time period.

To analyze database resource usage by date range, complete the following steps:

1. From the application page, click the Last 1 month drop-down menu at the top ofthe screen.

2. Select an option for a time range.

The available options include the following:

• Last one week

• Last 1 month: This is the default selection

Analyzing Database CPU UsageYou can analyze your CPU utilization, using the Resource Analytics: Databaseapplication.

You can:

• Analyze available CPU resources

• Compare CPU utilization between databases

• Analyze current CPU trend and forecast utilization

Analyzing Available CPU Resources

The CPU section under the Overview tab displays the available CPU capacity and thecurrent utilization.

Alternatively, click the CPU tab in the left pane. The first chart (Aggregate CPUAcross all Databases) shows you the actual CPU utilization (Used CPU) and theavailable capacity (Available CPU).

The difference between the values for Used CPU and Available CPU denotes yourunused capacity. The less the difference between your actual resource usage and yourresource capacity, the more urgent the need to plan to expand your available resourcecapacity.

Comparing CPU Utilization Between Databases

The CPU Breakdown by Individual Databases chart enables you to compare howyour different databases are using their resources.

To view CPU utilization breakdown by individual databases, complete the followingsteps:

1. Click the Group By drop-down list to select what metrics to group the databasesby.

Available options include the following:

• Life Cycle Status

• Target Version

• Cost Center

The number of database processes run on the CPU, and the percentage change arerepresented visually, through the size and color of the cells, respectively. Cells whichare larger in size run more database processes than smaller cells. The largest cellwould be that of the databases using the most CPU resources. The color of the cells isdetermined by the percentage change in the CPU resources used by the databases.

Analyzing Current CPU Trend and Forecasted Utilization

From the Trend and Forecast chart, you can view the current trend of CPU utilization,and use this trend to forecast your CPU utilization.

To forecast CPU utilization, complete the following steps:

1. Enter the name of the database in the Filters field, under the section Trend andForecast. You can specify multiple databases in the Filters field.

Alternatively, you can click the databases in the CPU Breakdown by IndividualDatabases section. Use the CTRL and Shift keys to choose multiple databases.

The data for the selected databases loads in the Trend and Forecast section.

2. Click Settings to set the Regression Model, Forecast Period, and Confidence (%).

3. Click Run.

The information loads in the Trend and Forecast section.

Note: For the Resource Analytics: Database application to forecast yourresource utilization for a year, there must be at least 13 months of data storedin the IT Analytics warehouse. The forecasted resource utilization is moreaccurate when there is more data stored in the IT Analytics warehouse.

You can plan your database capacity based on the current and forecasted resourceutilization.

In the image, the forecasted CPU utilization increases slowly over time. This meansthat at some point in the future, the CPU capacity will be entirely utilized. You shouldplan to expand CPU resource capacity before that point, to ensure that your databaseshave enough resources to function smoothly.

Analyzing Available Memory Resources

The Memory section under the Overview tab displays the available memory capacityand the current utilization.

Alternatively, click the Memory tab in the left pane. The first chart (AggregateMemory Across all Databases ) shows you the database memory usage and theavailable memory resources.

The difference between the values for DB Memory Usage and Available Memorydenotes your unused capacity. The less the difference between your actual resourceusage and your resource capacity, the more urgent the need to plan to expand youravailable resource capacity.

Comparing Memory Utilization Between Databases

The Memory Breakdown by Individual Databases chart enables you to compare howyour different databases are using their resources. You can access this chart from theMemory tab in the left pane.

The I/O section under the Overview tab displays the current trend of I/O activityacross the selected databases for the specified time period. This section shows you avisual representation of Disk IO, in terms of units (GB) sent per second.

Alternatively, click the IO tile in the navigation pane to view the current trend of I/Oactivity and forecast future activity.

From this chart, you can view the trend of Disk I/O during the specified time period.

The IO Breakdown by Individual Databases chart enables you to compare the I/Oactivity of your different databases.

To view I/O activity by individual databases, complete the following steps:

You can use the current and forecasted storage utilization to plan your databasecapacity.

For example, if according to the forecasted storage space utilization, the storagerequirements will gradually increase, then you need to plan your storage capacity toallow for this forecasted increase in storage needs.

Analyzing Resource Usage Across Multiple WebLogic Server Instances

To analyze resource usage across multiple WebLogic Server instances:

1. Click the Overview tab in the left pane.

2. Use the Target Selector, Date Picker, and Analysis Time Filter options to narrowdown your analysis.

The memory utilization is displayed under three categories:

Report Description

HeapUsage

The histogram shows the distribution of WebLogic Server instances in termsof their heap usage. The height of the bars indicates the number of WebLogicserver deployments in the respective category for the selected time period.

HostMemoryUsage

The histogram shows the categorization of WebLogic Server instances hostsin terms of their memory usage. The height of the bars indicates the numberof the WebLogic server hosts in the respective category for the selected timeperiod.

CPUUsage

The histogram shows the categorization of WebLogic Server instances interms of their CPU usage. The height of the bars indicates the number ofWebLogic server instances in the respective category for the selected timeperiod.

Drilling down to Usage Tabs

Click a bar or a group name to drill down to the respective usage page and view theusage details, and forecast the usage for that group of WebLogic Server instances.When you drill down from the histogram, a page level filter is set. You can clear thisfilter from the Filters option.

The selected date range applies to all reports in the application.

Analyzing Resource Usage by Specific Time PeriodsYou can use the Analysis Time Filter option to specify time intervals for analysis.

You can use the Analysis Time Filter option to analyze usage during specific timeperiods. For example, you can analyze usage during peak hours of the week or duringa holiday season. Available options include:

• Time: Enter a time range (in terms of hours of the day) for your analysis. Permittedvalues follow a 24-hour format. For example, to analyze resource usage between 8AM and 5 PM, enter 8–17 in the space provided.

• Days: Select the days of the week during which you want to analyze resourceutilization. For example, select the boxes against weekdays to analyze resourceusage from Monday to Friday.

• Months: Select specific months for your analysis. For example, if you want toanalyze resource usage during the period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s,the select the boxes against November and December.

To specify a time period, complete the following steps:

1. Click Analysis Time Fliter-Complete Dataset from the Resource Analytics:Middleware page.

2. In the Time field, enter the business hours. For example, 8-17.

3. To specify days, select the corresponding options under Days.

4. To specify months for the analysis, select the corresponding options under Months.

5. Click OK.

Data for the specified time period loads. The time period selection applies to allreports within the application.

Analyzing Heap UsageThe Java heap is a repository for live objects, dead objects, and free memory. The heapsize determines the volume of objects stored in the repository. Read This Before You BeginHere are some of the common terms and basic concepts regarding the PerformanceAnalytics applications.

The Automatic Database Diagnostic Monitor (ADDM), built into the Oracledatabase, analyzes the Automatic Workload Repository (AWR) data on a regularbasis, diagnoses the root causes of performance problems, provides recommendationsfor correcting any problems, and identified non-problem areas of the system.

Automatic Workload Repository (AWR), part of an Oracle database, collects,processes, and maintains performance statistics for problem detection and self-tuningpurposes. This data is both in memory and stored in the database.

Garbage collection, built into many programming languages, is an automatic way ofmanaging the memory available to various objects. The garbage collection mechanismtracks objects still being used, marks the objects no longer in use as garbage andthrough the process of garbage collection, it automatically frees up the memory for useby other objects. In the case of Java, garbage collection is done within the Java VirtualMachine environment.

Software applications can choose to implement various Garbage collection typesdepending on the performance goals. In Java, for example, developers can choose toimplement garbage collection of type singe threaded (serial), multi-threaded (parallel),concurrent mark then sweep (CMS) or parallel collection in multiple memory zones.Each method uses various resources and CPU time, affecting the overall applicationperformance.

The heap, for example in the Java heap, is a repository of Java objects. The heap is thesum of active objects, dead objects (marked for garbage collection) and free memory.Heap size tuning in Java refers to minimizing the time that the Java Virtual Machine(JVM) spends doing garbage collection while maximizing the number of clients thatthe application server can handle at a given time. A Heap map provides the memorydetails of a given process.

Analyzing Page PerformanceUsing IT Analytics, you can analyze the performance of the different pages of yourapplication.

From the main application page, you can view the following:

• Total page views and the percentage increase or decrease in the number of pageviews during the current time period. A decrease in total page views indicates thateither users are viewing the page less or fewer users are accessing your page. If thechange in page views is a cause for concern, then the application will present it toyou as a finding, enabling you to view detailed information.

• Page load time and the percentage increase or decrease in the page load timeduring the current time period. An increase in the page load time indicates thatusers have a longer wait before the page loads and they can see the informationthey want. If the change in page load time is a cause for concern, then theapplication will present it to you as a finding, enabling you to view detailedinformation.

• Total page errors and the increase or decrease in page errors during the currenttime period. If the change in page errors is a cause for concern, then the applicationpresents it to you as a finding, enabling you to view detailed information.

Clicking a finding enables you to view detailed information related to the finding.

For example, if your finding is that a page contributed to 80% and more of your totalpages during the selected time period, then you can view information related to thefollowing:

• Total page views, page errors, load time, first byte time, and document interactivetime, along with the percentage change since the previous time period for each.This information is similar to the information in the main page of the application.

• Trend for the page views, page errors, load time, first byte time, and interactivetime for the page. The trend enables you to identify time periods during which thevalues were unusually high or unusually low. From here, you can identify whetherthe change in page view percentage from the previous time period was due toconsistently high or low values.

• User profile according to the region, browser used, and the operating system of thedevice used to access the application. From here, you can identify whether theincrease or decrease in page performance was across regions, operating systemsand browsers, or whether specific regions, operating systems and browsers see adecrease in page performance.

This information enables you to identify possible reasons for decreased pageperformance.

You can also perform an Advanced analysis to:

• View data according to time, to identify specific days on which the application wasaccessed more than usual. With this information, the application owner can workwith the capacity planner to ensure that the necessary resources are in place tohandle the increased traffic on those days.

Note: To perform a categorical analysis, you can also group data by differentdimensions including time, browser, geographical region and operatingsystem

• Identify correlation between the different metrics (for example, page views andfirst byte time) related to page performance.

• Forecast future metrics (such as page views) to decide whether to expand availableresources to ensure that the application performs well.

You can select a different Finding from the drop-down list to view information specificto that finding.

Analyzing Server Request PerformanceUsing IT Analytics, you can analyze server request performance for your application.

From the main application page, you can view the following:

• Total calls and the percentage increase or decrease during the current time period.If the change in total calls is a cause for concern, then the application will present itto you as a finding.

• Total response time and the percentage increase or decrease during the currenttime period. An increase in the total response time means that the application takeslonger to load information for the user. If the change in response time is a cause forconcern, then the application will present it to you as a finding, enabling you toview detailed information.

• Total server request errors and the percentage increase or decrease during thecurrent time period. An increase in the total server request errors indicates thatmore errors are being generated. If the change in server request errors is a cause forconcern, then the application will present it to you as a finding.

Clicking on a finding enables you to view detailed information related to the finding.

For example, if your finding is that a server contributed to 40% of the total responsetime during the specified time period, then you can view the following information:

• General information about the total calls, errors, response time, application servertime, database time, and external time in the selected time period, along with thepercentage change since the previous time period. This information is similar to theinformation in the main page of the application.

• Trend of the calls, errors, response time, application server time, database time, andexternal time for the server request.

Maximizing Application Server PerformancePerformance Analytics: Application Server provides analytics insights forheterogeneous application servers including garbage collection overhead, workload,resource usage, availability, configuration profiles, and so on.

Performance Analytics: Application Server enables you to analyze the performance ofyour application servers. You can analyze issues related to availability, garbagecollection, Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) datasource, heap, host memory, andissues based on insights. The application analyzes available data and presents youwith findings or insights specific to the performance of your application servers. Forexample, the application presents the hour of the day with the peak load across yourapplication servers.

Note: For release 1.9, only Oracle WebLogic Server Target Type is supported.

You can access the application either from the Oracle Management Cloud home pageor through the Performance Analytics: Application Server dashboard. You are directedto a dashboard where you can:

• View availability across your application servers and identify servers that aredown

• Perform an inventory analysis to identify the different operating systems and JDKversions running across your application servers

• Identify issues with host memory, which could lead to possible performance issuesof your application servers

• Monitor garbage collection overheads and view detailed information about JavaDatabase Connectivity (JDBC) connection waits, requests and failures, and serverrequests

• View the total server request count and total server request count time

• Correlate metrics to identify the effect changes on one metric has on the other

A long garbage collection period couldaffect the amount of time server requests have to wait in queue before they arefulfilled by the application server. The threshold limit for garbage collection is setby the application, and is not user-defined. The application presents you with afinding based on the collected data. Following is an example of an applicationfinding.

12 have JDK version 1.8.0_60.23 have increasing Request Rate

According to this finding, based on the collected data, 12 of your applicationservers which are over the garbage collection limit have the JDK version 1.8.0_60,which might be causing problems. Also, 23 of your application servers have anincreasing request rate.

• Heap Issues: From here, you can view the application servers with a heap usageabove a specified percentage. The application provides you with insights orfindings based on the available data. Following is an example of an applicationinsight.

21 have Heap Size above 40GB.23 have an increasing Request Rate

According to this finding, based on the collected data, 21 of your applicationservers a high heap size of above 40GB. Also, 23 of your application servers havean increasing request rate.

• Workload Performance: From here, you can drill down to view informationspecific to the performance of selected servers. For more information, see Analyzing Application Server Workload Performance. Following is an example ofan application finding related to workload performance.

According to this finding, based on the collected data, the peak hour with thehighest number of requests (7.7M requests) was at 12pm-1pm. Also, the day withthe highest number of requests (30.3M requests) was Thursday.

• Distribution Analysis: From here, you can view information about the percentageof time spent in garbage collection and the total JDBC connection waits.

• Inventory Analysis: From here, you can view information about the JDK version,operating system vendor or version, and the XMX size across your applicationservers.

You can choose to view information for all your application servers or only for specificservers. You can also choose the time period for which you want the application toload the information.

Analyzing Application Server Workload PerformancePerformance Analytics: Application Server enables you to analyze the workloadperformance of your application servers through measuring the volume of requestsprocessed and the average response time.

Using Performance Analytics: Application Server, you can:

• Identify the peak time with a high volume of server requests

• Analyze changes in workload performance brought about by changes in GarbageCollection overheads

• Identify how changed in JDBC connection time affect workload performance

• View information for the total request count and total request count time

From the main page of the application, you can view workload performance dataacross your application servers, by:

• Server Request Count: This is the total number of requests serviced by theapplication server

• Server Request Processing Time: This is the time taken by your application serverto process each request

• A Distribution Analysis histogram which groups application servers according topercentage time in garbage collection and total JDBC connection waits. From thischart, you can drill down to view detailed information for the application serverswithin a selected bucket.

From the Workload Performance drill-down page, you can view a breakdown of theservers in the bucket you had selected in the Distribution Analysis histogram. Thisinformation is presented in the form of a heat map, where each cell represents a serverand the color of the servers is determined by the rate of change in the metric selected.

Note: By default, information for the top 5 application servers is loaded, butyou can choose to view information for all application servers in the selectedbucket.

You can view server breakdown according to the following:

• Server Request Count

• Distribution Analysis: From here you can view the distribution of percent timespent in garbage collection or the JDBC connection waits for each of the selectedservers.

• Correlation: For here, you can view the correlation between the metric that mostaffects the Server Request Processing Time, according to specific measures. Forexample, you can view the degree to which the Percent Time Spent in GarbageCollection correlates with the Server Request Processing Time, by Server RequestCount.

Analyzing IT Server and Application AvailabilityIT Analytics enables you to analyze the availability of your IT resources.

Using Availability Analytics, you can:

• View the overall health of your IT systems and applications and identify whether ithas improved since the previous time period. If your health score is low, you willneed to identify which target has the lowest health score and fix the issue.

• View the overall availability of all your targets. A lower availability percentage is acause for concern and will need to be analyzed further.

• Identify the targets that contributed the most to availability issues.

• View the average downtime of your IT systems and applications. A longerdowntime indicates an issue, and will need to be analyzed further.

• Identify targets with frequent outages.

• View the mean time between failures and the mean time to recover.

• Identify the top targets or target types generating events or incidents.

• View the number of critical events or incidents raised during the specified timeperiod, and identify whether it has improved since the previous time period.

• Identify the category and entities which experiences the highest events.

• View the total incidents, and fatal and critical events experienced across yourtargets.

The application analyzes the data it has collected and provides you with insights orFindings, which you can use to identify possible issues with the availability of your ITservers and applications.

Saving Your AnalysisWhen you create an analysis (by filtering data and selecting necessary visualizationoptions) which you want to retain to look at in the future, or which you want to sharewith others, then you can save it as a widget. Widgets can be used later to createdashboards.

When you save your analysis, you are saving:

• Fiters: These are specific values or ranges for values that you select for attributes.Based on the values you select, data is filtered out from the search results. Forexample, a specific target type or target name.

• Visualization options: This is the way in which you choose the data to berepresented. For example, histogram or treemap.

• Analysis: This is the mode of analysis that you select. For example, trending andforecasting.

Building DashboardsDashboards are a collection of widgets on a single page to enable quick access tomultiple data analyses.

A dashboard may contain one or more widgets. The dashboards appear on theDashboards page of IT Analytics.

When you first access IT Analytics, there are out-of-the-box dashboards available onthe Dashboards page. For more information about the out-of-the-box dashboards, see Out-of-the-Box Dashboards. You can create and delete dashboards. If necessary, youcan also edit dashboards by:

• Adding and deleting widgets

• Editing existing widgets on the dashboard

• Changing the layout

Note: A dashboard can have widgets created from multiple data sources.
