UTR Mentor Expectations

• The Urban Teacher Residency (UTR) is a highly selective alternative route to the California Teaching Credential.

• UTR Mentors are exemplary urban teachers in math or science.

• UTR Mentors host Residents, preservice teachers, in their classrooms all day, four days a week, for the entire school year.

UTR Mentor Expectations

• This intensive experience is aimed at the careful preparation of talented teachers who are knowledgeable about and deeply committed to urban children, schools, and communities.

• Mentors receive yearlong training and support.• Mentors make a three-year commitment and

receive a $3,000 stipend per Resident, per year.

• Mentors must be fully credentialed and tenured (if app.) with at least 3 years experience.

• They are also recommended by their colleagues and administrators and observed in their classrooms.

• Student Teaching– A supervisor is from the university is assigned to

each Resident who conducts formal observations are conducted

– Mentors are expected to conduct 3 formal observations

• Teaching Event– Residents are expected to complete a demanding

summative assignment

• Residents complete their credential requirements and look for a job!– ALL Cohort I Residents earned the credential and

found teaching jobs in the community!• Note, though CSUDH semesters finish before

LAUSD semesters, Residents are expected to be full participants through to the last day of both LAUSD semesters…
