UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Entrance Requirements:1. There is no minimum age requirement for entry

to undergraduate programmes at the University,except for applicants to the Bachelor of Medi-cine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), and B.Sc.Physical Therapy who must be at least 18 yearsof age.

2. Applicants are required to satisfy the relevantUniversity minimum entrance requirements formatriculation, either at Normal or Lower level,before being considered for admission to degreeor other programmes.

Faculty Requirements: 3. In addition, for admission to some degree pro-

grammes applicants are required to have quali-fications in specific subjects. These are referredto as Faculty Requirements and are stated in therelevant Faculty Regulations.

NORMAL MATRICULATION

(A) Passes in five subjects of which at least TWOmust be at the CAPE/GCE A-Level while the re-mainder may be an acceptable pass in CSEC(CXC)/GCE/BGCSE Examinations. The follow-ing are acceptable:

• Two 2-unit CAPE (Caribbean Advanced Pro-ficiency Examination)

• Six CAPE units including Caribbean Stud-ies and Communication Studies.

(B) OTHER QUALIFICATIONS TO FULL-TIMEPROGRAMMES• Associate Degrees from approved Carib-

bean Tertiary Level Institutions with a mini-mum GPA of 2.5.

• Holders of Associate Degrees from ap-proved Caribbean Tertiary Level Institutionsare considered as having satisfied normalmatriculation requirements for entry to cer-tain faculties and in specific instances credit/exemption may be given in respect of LevelI courses.

• For the purpose of satisfying entry require-ments, passes in subjects in the First Yearexaminations of the Faculties of Humanitiesand Education and Social Sciences and inPreliminary Level courses of the Faculties ofScience and Agriculture, Pure and AppliedSciences of this University will be consid-ered as the equivalent passes at Advancedlevel of the CAPE/GCE examination.

• Degrees from any university recognized bythe Board for Undergraduate Studies for thispurpose.

• Persons with qualifications other than thosestated above may also apply for admission.

• Persons over age 21(should have been atleast five years out of secondary school andhave demonstrated academic potential) whodo not fall in any of the above categoriesmay be assessed on their overall profes-sional/academic achievements.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES

LOWER LEVEL MATRICULATION

At least five (5) acceptable passes at CSEC (CXC)/GCE,BGCSE including English Language and ONE of the fol-lowing; a Foreign Language, Mathematics, an approvedScience subject; Geography.

• For the Faculties of Pure and Applied Sciences andScience and Agriculture, Mathematics and two (2)approved Science subjects are required.

• For the Faculty of Social Sciences, Mathematics isrequired

English Language Requirements:English Language is compulsory for admission to all pro-grammes of The University of the West Indies. Candi-dates who do not possess a Grade 1 in CSEC (CXC),English A, a Grade A in GCE O-Level English Language,a Grade 1 in CAPE Communication Studies or a GradeA or B in the GCE General Paper, are required to takean English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT) on entry.

Applicants whose first language is not English are re-quired to perform satisfactorily in an approved EnglishLanguage Test, e.g. the Test of English as a Foreign Lan-guage (T.O.E.F.L.). A mark of 500 in the TOEFL Test willbe accepted as equivalent to, and in place of, an ac-ceptable CSEC (CXC) pass in English (A).

FACULTY OF MEDICAL SCIENCES

DEGREE PROGRAMME OFFERED:

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery

(M.B.B.S.)

AGE REQUIREMENT:Applicant must be at least 18 years old at the time ofadmission.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS:The minimum requirements for admission to the Fac-ulty are the candidates performance and attainmentsin subjects listed below in the Caribbean AdvancedProficiency Examinations (CAPE)/GCE A-Level exami-nations.

Scheme A Passes in two units of Biology/Zoology,Chemistry, Physics or the GCE A-Levelequivalent. CSEC (CXC) General/GCEO-Level Mathematics is required

Scheme B Passes in both units of Biology/Zoology,Chemistry, Mathematics or the GCE A-Level equivalent. CSEC (CXC) General/GCE O-Level Physics is required.

Scheme C Passes in both units of Biology/Zoology,Chemistry or their GCE A-Level equiva-lent and one other two unit or GCE A-Level subject. Passes in CSEC(CXC)General/GCE O-Level Mathemat-ics and Physics is required.

The minimum academic standard for entry is the ag-gregate of a II and two III's in three two-unit subjectsat CAPE or the GCE A-Level equivalent.

NOTES:1. Physics and Mathematics are compulsory at least

at the CSEC (CXC) Level, whereas Biology andChemistry are compulsory at the Advanced level.

2. A triple Major Associate Degree from approvedCommunity Colleges with a GPA greater than3.5 is considered acceptable for entry into theM.B.B.S. programme.

Transfer applicants to Medical Sciences from theFaculties of Pure and Applied Sciences of theUWI, may be considered on completion of thePreliminary and/or Introductory years of the pro-gramme. All such applicants must complete andsubmit a Transfer Form (only) by the second Fri-day in January in the year of application.

Persons holding first degrees from Universitiesother than the UWI will also be considered pro-vided that:

• The University which granted the degree isrecognized as competitive

• Credits have been obtained in Biology/Zo-ology and Chemistry

• A minimum cumulative Grade Point Aver-age of 3.0 or its’ equivalent has been ob-tained

NON-ACADEMIC CONSIDERATIONS:All candidates are required to submit a short (300words or less) autobiographic sketch outlining thereasons for their career choice.

Candidates must produce evidence of their involve-ment in relevant extra-curricular/co-curricular activi-ties in socially oriented projects and voluntary com-munity service in the year prior to their application.

The Bachelor of Basic Medical Sciences offersMajors in the following disciplines: Anatomy,Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Physiology

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:A. i) GCE O-Level (Grades A/C) CSEC

(CXC) General Proficiency Level (GradesI & II) pre 1998; (Grades I - III from 1998)in English Language, Mathematics, Biol-ogy, Chemistry and Physics.

ii) GCE A-Level/Cape (2 Units per sub-ject): a minimum of two subjects chosenfrom Chemistry, Biology/Zoology, Phys-ics/Mathematics

OR

UWI Preliminary Pure an Applied ScienceCourses - Chemistry, Life Sciences, Physics,Mathematics.

B. Equivalent qualifications (as determinedfrom transcripts) to those above.

Physical Therapy is an allied health profession,concerned with health promotion, prevention ofphysical disabilities and the rehabilitation of per-sons disabled by pain, disease or injury.

Applicants to the Physical Therapy programmeare further required to:

2. Complete sixty (60) voluntary hours in a Physi-cal Therapy Faculty at the time of admissionto the Programme. At least thirty (30) of thesehours must be spent in an acute general hos-pital. Candidates must make their own ar-rangements for doing voluntary hours.

2. Submit along with the application forms, a personal statementof between 250-300 words in length giving his/her reasons forwanting to study for the degree in Social work.

3. Attend as requested an interview with the Faculty of Social Sci-ences personnel or in respect of applicants from non-campuscountries, with persons nominated by the Faculty.

The Pre-Health Professions Programme is designed to prepare ap-plicants who are currently unable to meet the requirements for ma-triculation with the necessary knowledge skills and attitudes for thedegree programme at the Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI - St.Augustine.

It is a 36-credit programme (3 semesters) consisting of five (5) coursesdelivered in modules - Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology andEnglish.
