VP’s lunch 2011
Welcome to Fenley Field Welcome to Fenley Field to what is our second home game in Midlands 2 West (South) in season 2011/12.
Today we are delighted to welcome our visitors from Cheltenham North RFC for what is their first visit to Fenley Field. We hope that their players, officials and supporters enjoy the day with us.
We are also pleased to welcome match referee Marcus Greenway of the Warwickshire Society.
Today is the occasion of our annual VPs Luncheon and, at time of writing, we expect around 70 VPs to be enjoying today’s fare. The Rugby World Cup has robbed us of a few regulars but we trust they are enjoying the experience in New Zealand. By the time we meet today it’s to be hoped that we are celebrating England’s success in their quarter‐final, together with one from Ireland and Wales – and as (largely) neutrals, we don’t really mind which one!
We have had a satisfactory start to the new season, although we could do with a more polished performance from the team today than the one we witnessed in the first home game of the season against Leamington. But to have chalked up two impressive away wins is gratifying, not something that we regularly do this early in the season.
Tomorrow, Sunday 9th October, sees a unique match taking place on the hallowed turf of The Close at Rugby School, when a Rugby Select Veterans XV will take on a team from the Lords and Commons, organised by Mark Pawsey, MP. The match is being staged as part of Rugby Borough Council’s celebrations to mark the Rugby World Cup 2011 and will feature a number of our more seasoned members. Fortunately the laws of the game, as modified for Parliamentary games, will ensure that our ‘players’ should still be in good condition for the celebratory dinner that follows Kick‐off is at 2.30pm and it will be well worth going along to enjoy the action.

Today’s Visitors
Cheltenham North RFC It’s unusual to see a club from Gloucestershire, a county in the South West Division, playing in the Midlands Division, but we are very happy to treat them as Midlanders for the day! In fact the club is based to the north of Cheltenham and their ground is at Bishops Cleeve, which means that they are not too far away from that other centre of sporting
excellence, Cheltenham racecourse.
The writer has not been able to establish when and why they moved over, so it will be interesting to get the background from their members here today. It does mean a lot of travelling for them and no real ‘derby’ fixtures, although newly promoted Upton on Severn and Pershore are relatively close. But in nearby Gloucester and down towards Bristol there are a number of clubs at the same level in the league structure in the SW Division, so it must be a bit tiresome having to travel regularly up to Warwickshire in this league!
This is the second week running that North have met a club from Rugby, as last week they entertained Newbold and went down by 8‐36. In fact they haven’t enjoyed the best of starts to the season although they fought out what was obviously a close match with Pershore before going down by just one point at the Worcestershire club’s ground
Two seasons ago we were promoted to Midlands 1 at the same time as North were relegated from that league, and it didn’t look as if our paths would be crossing for a while. But it has come about and we are delighted to welcome players, officials and supporters from the club to Fenley Field today.

1st XV Match Report Midlands 2 West South – Saturday 1st October Kidderminster 13 ‐ Old Laurentians 37
OLs travelled to Kidderminster and returned with a comfortable victory and a bonus point secured by four top quality tries in the first half.
OLs registered their first points after five minutes, following the first of many lineout wins, this one deep in their own half, Danny Murch’s slashing break was supported by Iain Wallis who outstripped the defence to run in from 30 metres, his pace belying his recently acquired veteran status! Danny Orr added the goal points to set up a match sequence of seven successful kicks from seven attempts.
Just three minutes later, Murch was again the creator after following up an astute kick by Orr to send Simon Bayliss in for a try, converted by Orr for a 14‐0 lead.
Kidderminster’s tactics relied heavily on the boot of their fly half McLellan and he put over a penalty after ten minutes for 14‐3. But on the half hour, another teasing kick by Orr was gathered expertly by full back Troy Owen, who sent Bayliss in for his second try, Orr adding the goal points for a 21‐3 lead. Bayliss enjoys matches against these opponents, having never failed to come away with less than two tries in the last five games with them.
Murch again splintered the Kidder defence with another strong run covering forty metres before he was held, followed by another sustained Laurentian attack involving Wallis, Adams, Miller and Owen that took play up to the home line and a five metre scrum. Carl Adams broke from the base and combined cleverly with scrum half Ricky Reed before sending Matt Miller in, Orr’s conversion lifting the lead to 28‐3 at the break.
In conditions that made their supporters urgently seek what little shade there was, both sides wilted visibly in the second half. After watching their backs make no headway against OL’s defence, Kidder’s forwards lifted their game after the break and created a try for their prop Turner, answered immediately by a penalty from Orr as OLs continued to press.
The home side’s pack again came back strongly and muscled over for a try from an attacking lineout, touched down by Wilkinson. But OLs continued to press at every opportunity and Orr’s boot kept the scoreboard ticking over and OLs lead intact, two more successful penalties lifting his personal tally to 17 points.
There was time for one more sweeping attack spearheaded by Miller, but his unselfish pass, seemingly intended to give Bayliss his hat trick, didn’t go to hand when he probably could have made the line himself – or was it jug avoidance on Simon’s part?

Warwickshire League 1 and Friendly Kenilworth 2nd XV 0 – 20 Old Laurentian 2nd XV and
Silhillians 2nd XV 19 – 26 Old Laurentian 2nd XV
In a bizarre weekend, Kenilworth 2nds pulled out of their fixture on Friday to gift a 20‐0 walkover to OLs in Warwickshire 1. OLs hastily re‐arranged a league fixture at Silhillians who also had their league match postponed but, upon arrival in Solihull, were told Sills couldn’t field a full front row and could the match be played as a friendly? OLs went on to win 26‐19 with tries from Grant Inch (2), Greg Loydall and Rudi Reid with Jon Bean adding 3 conversions.
Warwickshire League 3 Old Laurentian 3rd XV 5 – 32 Shipston 2nd XV
The 3rd XV welcomed Shipston 2nds and dominated possession and territory in the first half without being able to capitalise in points. The second half began with a 5‐6 deficit but, unfortunately, saw youth prevail over experience in the hot conditions with the visitors eventually running out 5‐32. OLs try coming from young scrum half Ben Roach.
This week’s fixtures: 2nds v Leicester Medics (friendly) – away
3rds v Bedworth 3rd XV (friendly) – home
OLs the biggest draw in Rugby! After a lengthy period with no online presence, Rugby Lions have at last launched a new website, although it is still very much a ‘work in progress’. You can find it at www.therugbyfootballclub.co.uk and it features an interesting article on the highest attendances at Webb Ellis Road in the last eight years. This follows the 533 attracted for their first game back at the ground against Mansfield two weeks ago and their drive to grow attendances over coming weeks.
Since 2003/04, the biggest crowd seen at Webb Ellis Road was the 605 who turned up to watch Old Laurentians in the Warwickshire Cup match on 31 December 2005!

Sundry Stuff Above and beyond the call…..? A group of OL’s finest had booked a day’s golf at the Tadmarton Heath club one day last week and when the party, consisting of Alan Willis, Lionel Gardner, Grantley Jenkins and Pete Staines arrived, the last named was suddenly seen to be in a state of agitation. As told to your correspondent, he had forgotten his battery. Now for what do you need a battery when playing golf, thought I. It turned out to be the battery for his golf trolley (I thought you just pulled them around!) but he managed to rent one from the club. Then, just as they prepared to tee off, the scream of tyres and clouds of dust from the car park signalled the arrival of Mrs Staines, in a hurry and complete with Pete’s battery. Now when one hears of golf widows, you assume they don’t enjoy (even suffer from) their husbands’ passion for the game. So to drive over 30 miles with your husband’s battery is a display of true devotion; and has to be an action way above the call of duty, demanding a mention in these columns.
RFU Intermediate Cup You may be aware that we enjoyed a bye through the first round of the Intermediate Cup, those games being played 2 weeks ago, on 24th September.
When the draw for the second round was made we came out of the hat with the winners of the 1st round tie between Huntingdon & District and Belgrave, a game won by Huntingdon with a 22‐11 score line. However, they were disqualified when found to have played an unregistered player, so the match passed to Belgrave. But, lo and behold, they were then disqualified for exactly the same reason, hence our bye! How long can we keep this going! The 2nd round is scheduled for next Saturday, 15th October, so now we have another blank Saturday. If an opponent can be found for us, we should be playing our 3rd round tie on November 5th! Next Saturday, local interest will centre on Newbold, who play Dunstablians; and Lutterworth, who travel to Burntwood.

The Midlands Two Scene After just 3 games played, Barkers Butts and Newbold are now the only sides with 100% records, Barkers maintaining that status by depriving Berkswell & Balsall of theirs last Saturday. In case anyone is wondering why Berkswell are labouring under the load of a 15 point deduction from the beginning of the season, this relates to a mass brawl (not just players, apparently, but officials and spectators as well!) in their match with Old Coventrians at the end of last season. So, as well as being relegated, OCs also started this season, in Midlands 3, with a 15 point penalty. B & B have started this season well enough and, on present form, should climb away from the bottom despite their penalty. Newly promoted Upton on Severn are finding the going tough, having conceded 99 points in losing 3 games; also languishing near the bottom are our visitors today, Cheltenham North, and Pershore. The league table appears to be splitting into two halves already, with a 5 point gap opened up between Banbury, in 5th, and the clubs below them. Our next league match after today, at Newbold on 22 October, has even more significance than usual as the league takes shape.
Local Club News Rugby Lions continue to dominate National 3 Midlands, but after chalking up massive wins in their first three games have met sterner resistance in their last two. First Mansfield held them to 34‐11. Then last Saturday, 3rd bottom Old Northamptonians scored 3 tries against them, were just 10‐14 adrift at half time and pushed them all the way until Lions scored 2 converted tries in the last five minutes to draw away to 56‐22. It’s worthy of note that Lions’ games so far have been against five of the bottom six in the league table as it now stands. Of that trailing pack, only Broadstreet have yet to meet Lions, and they are winless after five games. In Midlands One West, Kenilworth have only managed one win from five so far with only (surprisingly!) Camp Hill beneath them in the table. Ks lost at home by 13‐52 to 100% leaders Sutton Coldfield last Saturday. Bedworth and Dunlop have also managed just one win apiece so far and are already in a dogfight at the bottom. It’s galling to note that we were 6th in that league on this Saturday last year, with three wins from five and making it four from six on that day. Across in Midlands One East, Nuneaton Old Edwardians are in real trouble, winless after five, conceding 278 points along the way and rock bottom in the table. Rugby St Andrews are one of four clubs at the bottom of Midlands 3 East (South) without a win but they have gathered 3 bonus points to stay ahead of the other three in the basement. It’s interesting to note that Northampton BBOB, who grabbed a last minute win against us in a pre‐season friendly, lead that table with three wins from three and 111 points against 18. In Midlands 2 East (South), Long Buckby are in the bottom half with just one win so far; but Lutterworth are going well, unbeaten and third in the table. In Midlands 4 West (South), Rugby Welsh have yet to win, nor have they gathered any bonus points, and last Saturday they went down by 45‐5 at Claverdon to stay third bottom.
