Motorcycles are fascinating vehicles, which can give you an unsurpassed feeling of power and freedom. However, they also impose certain limits, which you must accept; even the best motorcycle does not ig-nore the laws of physics.

Regular care and maintenance are essential for preserving your motorcycle’s value and operating condi-tion. Moreover, what is true for the motorcycle is also true for the rider: good performance depends on be-ing in good shape. Riding under the influence of medication, drugs and alcohol is, of course, out of thequestion. Motorcycle riders – more than car drivers – must always be at their mental and physical best.Under the influence of even small amounts of alcohol, there is a tendency to take dangerous risks.

Protective clothing is as essential for the motorcycle rider as seat belts are for car drivers and passengers.Always wear a complete motorcycle suit (whether made of leather or tear-resistant synthetic materialswith protectors), sturdy boots, motorcycle gloves and a properly fitting helmet. Optimum protective wear, however, should not encourage carelessness. Though full-coverage helmets and suits, in particular, cre-ate an illusion of total safety and protection, motorcyclists will always be vulnerable. Riders who lack criti-cal self-control run the risk of going too fast and are apt to take chances. This is even more dangerous inwet weather. The good motorcyclist rides safely, predictably and defensively – avoiding all dangers, in-cluding those caused by others.

Enjoy your ride!

Tips for reducing fuel con-sumption

Your motorcycle’s fuel consumptiondepends to a large extent on yourriding style. The following tips can helpreduce fuel consumption:

Warm up the engine beforeriding.

Turn off the starter (choke) assoon as possible.

Shift up swiftly and avoid high en-gine speeds during acceleration.

Do not double-clutch or rev theengine while shifting down andavoid high engine speeds with noload on the engine.

Turn off the engine instead of let-ting it idle for an extended lengthof time, i.e. in traffic jams, at trafficlights or railroad crossings.

EAU01128

Engine break-in

There is never a more important periodin the life of your motorcycle than theperiod between zero and 1,600 km.For this reason we ask that you care-fully read the following material. Be-cause the engine is brand new, youmust not put an excessive load on it forthe first 1,600 km. The various parts inthe engine wear and polish them-selves to the correct operating clear-ances. During this period, prolongedfull throttle operation, or any conditionwhich might result in excessive heat-ing of the engine, must be avoided.

EAU01171

0 ~ 1,000 km

Avoid operation above 1/3 throttle.

1,000 ~ 1,600 km

Avoid cruising speeds in excess of1/2 throttle.

EC000056

CAUTION:

After 1,000 km of operation, be sureto replace the engine oil, oil filter

and final gear oil.

1,600 km and beyond

Proceed with normal riding.

EC000049

CAUTION:

If any engine trouble should occurduring the break-in period, consult

a Yamaha dealer immediately.

Inspection

The spark plug is an important enginecomponent and is easy to inspect. Thecondition of the spark plug can indicatethe condition of the engine. Normally, all spark plugs from the same engineshould have the same color on thewhite insulator around the center elec-trode. The ideal color at this point is amedium-to-light tan color for a motor-cycle that is being ridden normally. Ifone spark plug shows a distinctly dif-ferent color, there could be somethingwrong with the engine. Do not attemptto diagnose such problems yourself.Instead, take the motorcycle to aYamaha dealer. You should periodi-

cally remove and inspect the sparkplugs because heat and deposits willcause any spark plug to slowly breakdown and erode. If electrode erosionbecomes excessive, or if carbon andother deposits are excessive, youshould replace the spark plug with thespecified plug.

Proper loading of your motorcycleis important for several characteris-tics of your motorcycle, such ashandling, braking, performance andsafety. Do not carry loosely packeditems that can shift. Securely packyour heaviest items close to thecenter of the motorcycle, and dis-tribute the weight evenly from sideto side. Properly adjust the suspen-sion for your load, and check thecondition and pressure of yourtires. NEVER OVERLOAD YOURMOTORCYCLE. Make sure the totalweight of the cargo, rider, passen-ger, and accessories (fairing, sad-dlebags, etc. if approved for thismodel) does not exceed the maxi-mum load of the motorcycle. Opera-tion of an overloaded motorcyclecould cause tire damage, an acci-dent, or even injury.

● When checking the fluid level, make sure the top of the mastercylinder is level by turning thehandlebars.

● Use only the designated qualitybrake fluid. Otherwise, the rubberseals may deteriorate, causingleakage and poor brake perfor-mance.

● Refill with the same type of brakefluid. Mixing fluids may result in aharmful chemical reaction andlead to poor brake performance.

● Be careful that water does not en-ter the master cylinder when refill-ing. Water will significantly lowerthe boiling point of the fluid andmay result in vapor lock.

● Brake fluid may deteriorate paint-ed surfaces or plastic parts. Al-ways clean up spilled fluidimmediately.

● Have a Yamaha dealer check thecause if the brake fluid level goesdown.

TroubleshootingAlthough Yamaha motorcycles receivea rigid inspection before shipment fromthe factory, trouble may occur duringoperation.Any problem in the fuel, compression,or ignition systems can cause poorstarting and loss of power. The trou-bleshooting chart describes a quick, easy procedure for making checks. If your motorcycle requires any repair, bring it to a Yamaha dealer. The skilledtechnicians at a Yamaha dealershiphave the tools, experience, and know-how to properly service your motor-cycle. Use only genuine Yamaha partson your motorcycle. Imitation partsmay look like Yamaha parts, but theyare often inferior. Consequently, theyhave a shorter service life and canlead to expensive repair bills.

Care

The exposure of its technology makesa motorcycle charming but also vulner-able. Although high-quality compo-nents are used, they are not all rust-resistant. While a rusty exhaust pipemay remain unnoticed on a car, it doeslook unattractive on a motorcycle. Fre-quent and proper care, however, willkeep your motorcycle looking good, extend its life and maintain its perfor-mance. Moreover, the warranty statesthat the vehicle must be properly takencare of. For all these reasons, it is rec-ommended that you observe the fol-lowing cleaning and storingprecautions.

Before cleaning

1. Cover up the muffler outlets withplastic bags.

2. Make sure that all caps and cov-ers as well as all electrical cou-plers and connectors, includingthe spark plug caps, are tightly in-stalled.

3. Remove extremely stubborn dirt, like oil burnt onto the crankcase, with a degreasing agent and abrush, but never apply such prod-ucts onto seals, gaskets andwheel axles. Always rinse the dirtand degreaser off with water.

Cleaning

After normal useRemove dirt with warm water, a neutraldetergent and a soft clean sponge, then rinse with plenty of clean water.Use a tooth or bottle brush for hard-to-reach parts. Tougher dirt and insectswill come off more easily if the area iscovered with a wet cloth for a few min-utes before cleaning.

CAUTION:

Avoid using strong acidicwheel cleaners, especially onspoked wheels. If you do usesuch products for hard-to-re-move dirt, do not leave it on anylonger than instructed, thenthoroughly rinse it off with wa-ter, immediately dry the areaand apply a corrosion protec-tion spray.

Improper cleaning can damagewindshields, cowlings, panelsand other plastic parts. Useonly a soft, clean cloth orsponge with mild detergent andwater to clean plastic.

Do not use any harsh chemicalproducts on plastic parts. Besure to avoid using cloths orsponges which have been incontact with strong or abrasivecleaning products, solvent orthinner, fuel (gasoline), rust re-movers or inhibitors, brake flu-id, antifreeze or electrolyte.

Do not use high-pressurewashers or steam-jet cleanerssince they cause water seep-age and deterioration in the fol-lowing areas: seals (of wheelbearings, swingarm bearings, forks and brakes), electric com-ponents (couplers, connectors, instruments, switches andlights), breather hoses andvents.

For motorcycles equipped witha windshield: Do not use strongcleaners or hard sponges asthey will cause dulling orscratching. Some cleaningcompounds for plastic mayleave scratches on the wind-shield. Test the product on asmall hidden part of the wind-shield to make sure they do notleave any marks. If the wind-shield is scratched, use a quali-ty plastic polishing compound

after washing.

After riding in the rain, near the sea oron salt-sprayed roadsSince sea salt or salt sprayed on theroads in the winter are extremely corro-sive in combination with water, carryout the following steps after each ridein the rain, near the sea or on salt-sprayed roads. (Salt sprayed in thewinter may remain on the roads wellinto spring.)

2. Be sure to apply a corrosion pro-tection spray on all (even chrome-and nickel-plated) metal surfacesto prevent corrosion.

After cleaning

1. Dry the motorcycle with a cham-ois or an absorbing cloth.

2. Use a chrome polish to shinechrome, aluminum and stainless-steel parts, including the exhaustsystem. (Even the thermally in-duced discoloring of stainless-steel exhaust systems can be re-moved through polishing.)

3. To prevent corrosion, it is recom-mended to apply a corrosion pro-tection spray on all (even chrome-and nickel-plated) metal surfaces.

4. Use spray oil as a universal clean-er to remove any remaining dirt.

Storage

Short-term

Always store your motorcycle in a cool, dry place and, if necessary, protect itagainst dust with a porous cover.

ECA00014

CAUTION:

Storing the motorcycle in apoorly ventilated room or cov-ering it with a tarp while it is stillwet will allow water and humid-ity to seep in and cause rust.

To prevent corrosion, avoiddamp cellars, stables (becauseof the presence of ammonia)and areas where strong chemi-

cals are stored.

Long-term

Before storing your motorcycle for sev-eral months:

1. Follow all the instructions in the“Care” section of this chapter.

2. Drain the carburetor float cham-bers by loosening the drain bolts;this will prevent fuel deposits frombuilding up. Pour the drained fuelinto the fuel tank.

3. Only for motorcycles equippedwith a fuel cock which has an“OFF” position: Turn the fuel cockto “OFF”.

4. Fill up the fuel tank and add fuelstabilizer (if available) to preventthe fuel tank from rusting and thefuel from deteriorating.

5. Perform the following steps toprotect the cylinders, piston rings, etc. from corrosion.

a. Remove the spark plug caps andspark plugs.

b. Pour a teaspoonful of engine oilinto each spark plug bore.

c. Install the spark plug caps ontothe spark plugs and place thespark plugs on the cylinder headso that the electrodes are ground-ed. (This will limit sparking duringthe next step.)

d. Turn the engine over severaltimes with the starter. (This willcoat the cylinder walls with oil.)

e. Remove the spark plug caps fromthe spark plugs, install the sparkplugs and then the spark plugcaps.

EWA00003

WARNING

When turning the engine over, besure to ground the spark plug elec-trodes to prevent damage or injury

from sparking.

6. Lubricate all control cables andthe pivoting points of all levers andpedals as well as of the side-stand/centerstand.

7. Check and, if necessary, correctthe tire air pressure, then raise themotorcycle so that both of itswheels are off the ground. Alter-natively, turn the wheels a little ev-ery month in order to prevent thetires from becoming degraded inone spot.

8. Cover up the muffler outlets withplastic bags to prevent moisturefrom entering.

9. Remove the battery and fullycharge it. Store it in a cool, dryplace and recharge it once amonth. Do not store the battery inan excessively cold or warm place(less than 0˚C or more than 30˚C).For more information, see “Bat-tery storage” in the chapter “PE-RIODIC MAINTENANCE ANDMINOR REPAIRS”.
