  • Athletics NSW Annual Report 2019/20206

Our report to the membership for the 2019/20 season is unprecedented in both its form and substance.

    Transition of Chair

In early 2020, after almost 3 years as Chair of ANSW, Peter Higgins decided to take up a professional opportunity in the United Kingdom and therefore step down as Chair of ANSW. Matt Whitbread was subsequently unanimously elected to the Chair in February 2020 in a seamless transition to ensure continuity and stability for the sport in NSW. While the occupant of the Chair may have changed, the underlying strategy and continuity of the Board has not. We have worked together, both inside and outside the boardroom, for the better part of a decade and we are in lockstep as to the future direction of our sport. It is for that reason that we deliver the first joint Chair’s report for the 2019/20 season.

Over the past five months or so, both our sport and the world at large have been confronted with a challenge the likes of which we have not seen since the Second World War. That challenge has necessitated ANSW taking early and decisive action to ensure the long-term survival and strength of the sport in NSW.

    COVID-19 and Our Team

The financials presented in this Annual Report show a significant financial loss for the 2019/20 year. That result is almost entirely attributable to the effects of COVID-19 which had its most significant impact on

the ANSW business in the final month of our financial year, long before the welcome injection of both Commonwealth and NSW Government assistance which complemented decisive actions taken by the Board and management to stabilise the business. Those actions included very difficult decisions which had to be taken impacting the ANSW staff. It is not lost on either of us the very real impact these decisions have had on the lives of the people who work day in and day out to make our sport what it is. It is precisely because of that very real impact that we and the Board were so impressed by and appreciative of the approach taken by the ANSW team towards the decisions taken by the Board and CEO during this period. Those necessary changes were accepted in the spirit in which they were intended – that is, to ensure the long-term survival of the business. The entire team is to be commended for their attitude and effort during what has been a period of unprecedented adversity.

We would also like to make particular mention of our CEO, Kirin Lindop. Barely more than a year in to her tenure as CEO, Kirin navigated us through the most difficult conditions either of us have seen in the sport. Her professionalism, innovative mindset and ability to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances has left ANSW in a position where it is poised to rebound strongly out of what has been an unquestionably difficult period. The swift implementation of initiatives such as the Virtual Run Series and the staging of the universally praised Short Course Cross Country Championships at the Kembla Joggers facility in Dapto are just two instances of the fruits of Kirin’s leadership of the ANSW team.

    Our Community

We said at the start of this outbreak that we must never forget that to participate in our sport is a privilege which must never be taken for granted. Even in the best of times, there are any number of members of the broader community who are not afforded the opportunities to participate in a fun, safe and welcoming environment that we are given as a matter of course. Never has there been such a poignant reminder of that fact than the last few months.

We are proud of the fact that, like our team at ANSW, the broader athletics community has rallied together to support each other through what have been common challenges and emotions. We are all incredibly frustrated at being unable to do what we love – whether that be competing ourselves, watching our loved ones participate, volunteering at our local clubs, coaching or officiating. We are nothing without the people who make up our community – athletes, officials, coaches, club volunteers and fans. Each of you have a fundamental and critical role to play in our sport and none can survive in isolation. We thank you for both the support you have provided each other and the patience you have afforded us during this time. As we continue to work our way back from this crisis, we ask that you all continue to adopt the same attitude towards the return to play as you have to its shutdown.

    The Year Ahead

Outside of COVID-19, our sport is on the precipice of profound change for the better which has been years in the making.

We are each committed to two principal strategic objectives for our sport in the next 12 months. First, the unification of athletics in NSW by finally achieving a coming together of Little Athletics, open athletics and masters athletics in NSW. And second, the reinvigoration of our core track and field competition product offering which will both serve our existing membership better and also bring our sport to an entirely new audience.

    OneAthletics

The unification of athletics in NSW and indeed Australia has been the better part of a decade in the making. It has been the subject of extensive scrutiny and analysis which has produced any number of expert reports and recommendations. The outcome of that analysis and independent expert advice is express and unequivocal. While there undoubtedly remains work to be done on the precise mechanics of unification, there can no longer be any rational basis to deny that the underlying principle of coming together is in the best interests of the sport as a whole.

We must end the culture of ‘us’ and ‘them’. We are not Little Athletics, opens and masters. We are all here because we love the same sport and we want it to be as successful as it can be for those who come after us. The unification of athletics in NSW will be ANSW’s single most important strategic focus in 2020/21 and represents the single biggest opportunity for our sport to take a quantum leap forward to the benefit of the entire athletics community.

    Our Competition Offering

The second major strategic initiative of the Board in 2020/21 is the reinvigoration of our track and field competition product offering. For too long we have done things because that’s the way they have always been done – tinkering at the edges without addressing the fundamental limitations of how we deliver our sport. With a number of notable exceptions where members of our community have attempted to drive innovation, that complacency has seen the sport stagnate in NSW and that must change.

At the Board’s direction, the ANSW team have begun work on developing a track and field competition product offering which both serves our existing membership and participation base better, while also opening up our sport to an entirely new audience. While the operational details of that revamp remain a work in progress, a number of fundamental principles have been agreed by the Board to guide the revamp.

  • Athletics NSW Annual Report 2019/20208

First, there will be an increased focus on meets being held within specialised event groups so that athletes can participate in meets tailored to the events they want to compete in – rather than at meets trying to be everything to everyone. Second, there will be an increased focus on delivering events closer to the entirety of our membership and participation base, in recognition of the fact that we have at times drifted into becoming ‘Athletics SOPAC’ and ‘Athletics Sydney’. Third, we will endeavour to decentralise competition delivery away from ANSW and towards empowering our member clubs which will assist in both expanding the number of competition opportunities for athletes while also ensuring the long-term viability and growth of our member clubs.

The reinvigoration of that competition product offering will not be a quick process. We will not get it entirely right the first time around. In that regard, we ask our community to be patient and work with us to continually improve the way we do things, in the same way you have done over the past few months. If we work together, are prepared to be innovative and

find a better way of doing things, we are confident that we can both improve what we already do and also open up our sport to an entirely new audience which will bring with it untold opportunities. We understand and appreciate that in order to achieve these priorities we will need to step outside of our comfort zone. However, we must be prepared to do that if we are to take our sport to the next level. To stand still is to watch the world pass us by. We as a sport must be better than that. We must be bold and prepared to fail in order to reach for success. This sport, our sport, has enormous potential. We have to be brave enough to chase it.

    Yours in Athletics,

A Message from the CHief Executive officer

Firstly, I would like to acknowledge and pay tribute to those who lost their lives and properties in the devastating bush fires of early 2020 and the ongoing devastating impact COVID-19 has had and continues to have globally, in Australia and on our lives as a whole.

The end of the 2019/2020 season and the start of 2020 will go down as one of the most eventful and disrupted seasons in Athletics NSW history. Within a six week period, NSW was hit by disastrous bushfires, unparalleled air quality, extreme heat and cyclonic weather conditions. The efforts of our ANSW staff and officials to continue to deliver competitions during this time must be commended.

The global COVID-19 pandemic reached Australia in mid-March when the reality of the pending crisis was realised with the cancellation of international events including the NBA, the Melbourne Grand Prix, our Athletics Australia national championships and Olympic trials and the Little Athletics NSW State Championships.

We have since realised the devastating impact of COVID-19 globally and my thoughts go out to our members and families who have been impacted.

    Impact of COVID-19

Athletics NSW along with the sports industry were not immune from the impacts of COVID-19. ANSW realised an instant financial impact with the cancellation of the Athletics Australia National Track and Field Championships and the need to put our business and activities into a dormant state.

Early and difficult decisions were required by the Board, senior staff and myself to ensure we planned for long term survival and to place ANSW in the best position for recovery.

Thank you to our ANSW Board for their leadership and support and in particular, Andrew Watson for This invaluable financial advice during a time of such uncertainty.

To our ANSW Staff, it has been a challenging and stressful period which required stand downs, reduced salaries and the application of Jobkeeper. I personally want to acknowledge and thank all staff for their resilience and commitment to helping us get through the past months and working towards standing the business back up again.

To our officials, clubs, members and stakeholders, your understanding, patience and support has been amazing, thank you. One thing the past five months has allowed is the introduction of the video platform, it has been wonderful to deliver club forums, officials education workshops and planning sessions via the Zoom platform. This technology will be a welcome addition to our business moving forward. Major Technology Projects

Over the last year ANSW has delivered significant changes in technology with a new membership and competition platform and website.

Revolutionise Sport – membership and competition platform

With our member clubs, ANSW and Revolutionise sport (Rev Sport) staff rolled out the new membership platform Revolutionise Sport in September of last year which launched our 19/20 summer season.

Our new membership platform is coming to the end of its first cycle, we have settled into our new processes with all financial Clubs and members. To this point the feedback is positive and we are working through some minor amendments to ensure the ongoing membership experience is flawless.

The build and customisation of the RevSport Competition platform required an enormous effort by our ANSW Competition staff, Athletics Australia staff, all Member Association’s and RevSPORT. The transition has been a welcome addition to our competition delivery process.

    ANSW website

ANSW staff with the valued experience of Pat Birgan built and delivered our new ANSW website. A vast improvement on the customer experience and the navigation of our site.

    OneAthletics

Athletics Australia and Little Athletics Australia have been working towards a proposed merger between the two organisations — the OneAthletics Proposal, which will create a new National Sporting Organisation to be responsible for athletics in Australia.

A successful merger will see athletics transformed into one of the biggest participation sports in the country and will ensure a clear and logical pathway for athletes, coaches and officials throughout their life in the sport.

The work at a State level with ANSW, LANSW, NSW Masters and the NSW Office of Sport via an NSW Athletics Joint Working Party has been constructive. Following the national announcement, attention has now turned to ANSW and LANSW working towards a joint future as one organisation.

    Competitions

From a competition perspective and aside from the disruption of early 2020, 2019/2020 was a very successful season. Over the winter season the Waratah State XC Championship series was a great success, thank you to all Clubs, Officials and volunteers who played an invaluable role in the delivery of these competitions.

Our Run NSW events experienced fantastic growth in 2019, particularly the Sydney:10 and Sydney Half,

both delivered in the Sydney Olympic Park precinct, by ANSW staff and officials. The Sydney:10 grew by 52% with the Sydney Half exploding with a 158% growth.

Credit goes to our ANSW Competition and Media and Marketing staff who have worked hard to connect to the recreational, elite and our club-based running communities.

Whilst disrupted, our ANSW Staff and NSW Athletics Officials delivered all State Championships including the State All Schools, open and junior championships. The 19/20 season delivered learnings which we will apply to our planning of the season and seasons ahead.

    Commercial Partners

We are grateful for the ongoing partnerships with our commercial partners who supported ANSW and our RunNSW events during the 2019/2020 season:

    • Greater Bank• ACPE • 2XU• SOPA and SOPAC• Wholesale Trophies• RedBull • UnderArmour• NSW Office of Sport• Sydney Olympic Park Authority

To our extended partners, whose support drives various aspects of our operations: Little Athletics NSW, Athletics Australia, NSWIS and Sport NSW – thank you.

ANSW along with all NSW State Sporting Organisations, recieved a COVID-19 financial stimulus package from the NSW Government via the NSW Office of Sport. Thank you to the NSW Government and in particular the NSW Office of Sport for the support during this challenging period.

  • nswathletics.org.au 13

The Office of Sport and Sport NSW have also provided invaluable support and assistance to the NSW sporting sector throughout the period of the pandemic, through initiatives such as weekly online updates from the Minister for Sport and online networking opportunities, advice and support.

Thank you to our Officials Workforce, Clubs and Coaches

To our valued officials, many who worked back to back long hours and through the varied challenging conditions at school carnivals, winter and summer competitions, thank you. The support of our officials is unwavering and the backbone of our sports existence.

Thank you to our Club administrators and Coaches, your dedication and commitment to the sport of athletics and your Clubs and members. These roles play such an important part in the athletics journey and the individual athletes experience.

The past year we have seen some changes in ANSW Staff, with Bronwyn White (Newcastle Development

Officer), Ashleigh Crook (Officials Coordinator), Emily Kass (Membership Coordinator) and Andrea Berrell (TTP) no longer working with ANSW. Thank you to Bronwyn, Ashleigh, Emily and Andrea for their individual contributions to ANSW. Narelle McKenzie is a welcome addition to our Finance Team.

Finally, to our ANSW staff, as I mentioned earlier the last few months have been challenging but at the same time very rewarding. We will come out of this period stronger. Thank you to our staff for their capability, knowledge and commitment to work as a Team across all areas of our business.

We have an interesting road ahead, and I am confident we will continue to grow and evolve as an organisation. Thank you all for your support over the past year. Kirin LindopCEO – Athletics NSW

  • Athletics NSW Annual Report 2019/202014

COMPETITIONSThe 2019/2020 season will be one to remember for a variety of reasons. With major participation increases to an unprecedented amount of events cancelled due to extreme weather conditions, to the point where the final event of the season was cancelled due to COVID-19.

The winter 19/20 season again registered a strong showing with a significant increase of total participants across the entire winter, in comparison to the previous years participation numbers.

Two events that saw significant increases were the Sydney10 and Sydney Half, marquee events on the ANSW winter calendar. There was a strong push in marketing and reach to stakeholders and new target markets. A significant amount of work went into bringing to life these two events to create a point of difference from other existing events. The shift resulted in the number of runners on both start lines, increasing by 53% for the Sydney10 and a massive 158% increase for the Sydney Half from 18/19.

The NSW Cross Country Championships, continues to go from strength to strength. It was once again a beautiful day in Nowra, with the course in the best condition they have ever seen. This is a testament to the hard work that Rod and Jan Gibb put into the course preperation.

We once again saw a dip in numbers for the NSW XC Short Course Championships, which incorporates the NSW Little Athletics Cross Country Championships. The event was held at Upjohn Park, with the host club West Met doing a brilliant job bringing the course and facilities together.

The summer season kicked off with the ACPE NSW All Schools Championships. This event continues to grow each year, showing a large appetite among NSW school students to participate in athletics. We once again have record numbers with 1841 school students showcasing their talents in the states highest level athletics competition. Through the success of these championships, we have forged meaningful relationships with a number of sports associations who are excited to work with us to increase the number of NSW students continuing their athletic journey past their school carnival.

It was the 20th anniversary of the Campbelltown Athletics Track and the NSW Relay Championships were held at Campbelltown to help celebrate this milestone. The venue was built for the Sydney 2000 Olympics and has serviced the Campbelltown club ever since. With the assistance of the local council, the event saw an increase in numbers from the previous year and positive feedback from participants and clubs. We thank the Campbelltown Athletics Club and the Campbelltown Council for their support.

Dubbo was the host of the NSW Country Championships. The country community descended on Dubbo for what was a successful event. The Dubbo Athletics Club and the Dubbo Council were instrumental in this success. The Dubbo Athletics Track is one of the premier athletics facilities in NSW. Once again, our loyal officials travelled to Dubbo to assist in the running of the event. The officials, along with the locally sourced volunteers through the Dubbo Council, made the event run smoothly.

It was a challenging start to 2020 with many events needing to be either cancelled or postponed due to, air quality, extreme heat or lightning. This placed a significant amount of pressure on the season.

Our officials went above and beyond to deliver the major championship events for the summer. The final event of the season was also cancelled, along with the Australian Athletics Championships due to COVID-19.

We are experiencing an interesting time in our lives and our sport will need the help and support of the whole athletics community. The summer season saw a small increase in total participation numbers. This is positive considering the many challenges that were faced during the season. A significant amount of this must be attributed to the

hard-working officials and club administrators. I must also make mention of the hard work that the Athletics NSW office staff put into both the summer and winter seasons. It’s not just the competitions department but a whole of office effort to make the season a successful one.

A big thank you must be given to everyone who helped make the 2019/2020 season a positive one. We thank the Competition Advisory Panel and Winter Harriers for their expert input into the makeup of the season. Again, we also thank the wonderful band of officials who continue to provide Athletics NSW with an invaluable service to the sport of athletics. The club administrators, coaches, athletes, family and friends, all also deserve recognition.

We have learnt a lot from the season gone and will take this knowledge into the next season, with the drive to continue to build and grow on what is an already solid foundation. We will continue to review and refine our product offerings to ensure we provide a competition product that is open and accepting of all the diverse stakeholders within our great sport.

    OFFICIALS

The 2019/2020 season was strongly impacted by many uncontrollable factors, but one consistently reliable component was our cohort of dedicated officials.

168 Technical Officials attend an Athletics NSW event during the 19/20 season, which is a 3% increase from last season. Of these 168 officials, 26 were new to officiating with ANSW. In addition to these new officials, there was an improved retention rate of 91% from the 2018/2019 season’s 80%.

The 19/20 season demonstrated positively, the efforts of internal staff and the Joint Officials Committee in the amalgamation of LANSW and ANSW officials, with over 42% of active officials also officiating at a LANSW event this season.

Athletics NSW would like to congratulate David Higgins and Josephine Ng, for being awarded the NSW Official and NSW Novice Official of the Year respectively. Along with Rob Blackadder and Heather

Mitchell for being awarded Life Members of Athletics Australia. We would also like to acknowledge the 17 officials who officiated more than 25 days this season; Terry Manns, Betty Moore, Howard Vandervord, Michael Halmy, Paul Buckley, Murray Gaudin, Del Warrick, Ron Richter, Tony Smyth, Adam Mylonas, Janet Nixon, Katrina Morrow, David Higgins, David Morrow, Jim Legge, Les Allan and Rob Jones.

Finally, I would like to thank all the technical officials and volunteers who contributed to the 2019/2020 season despite the array of conditions. The dedication, generosity and contribution of each official is strongly valued by all those involved in Athletics in NSW.

    Coaching

Throughout the 2019/20 financial year, Athletics NSW continued developing its coach education program by increasing the Coach Education Workforce. Paired with an increase of courses delivered in Regional and Metropolitan New South Wales, there has been considerable growth in service accessibility.

The key highlights of 2019/20 were:

    • 31 Accredited Coach Education Courses were delivered throughout NSW.

    • 6 Accredited Coach Education Courses were conducted in Regional locations, including Mudgee, Bega, Tamworth and Dubbo.

    • Athletics NSW worked alongside the School Sport Unit to deliver four Coach Education Courses to regional and metropolitan-based teachers.

    • The number of coaches who completed coaching courses in NSW in 2019/20 was a total of 369 averaging approximately 12 participants per course.

The most in-demand coach accreditation course is the entry Level 1 Community Athletics Coach with over seven courses run with 115 participants and an

average of 16 people per course. Education and information for coaches continued through the ‘E-Coaching’ newsletter, which is distributed to all accredited coaches.

Providing updates in the coaching space ‘E-Coach’ includes interviews, coach job advertisements, informative articles and opportunities for further training and professional development.

Athletics NSW is working closely with Little Athletics NSW to provide joint coaching opportunities for coaches.

In 2020/2021, Athletics NSW will continue to focus on providing coaches with opportunities to upskill their knowledge in the coaching space. Athletics NSW is committed to reaching as many coaches as possible by providing high quality, current and engaging professional development opportunities. Athletics NSW will also continue to develop the relationship with Little Athletics NSW, providing opportunities for all coaches regardless of accreditation or skill level.

    Marketing Communications

Throughout the 2019/20 Winter and Summer season, the ANSW marketing team provided marketing and communications support to ANSW/RunNSW events and programs.

Continual engagement and content generated from ANSW products and events, in addition to the RunNSW events, assisted in increasing brand awareness among both members and non-members.

The “Big 3” RunNSW events (Sydney 10, Sydney Half and Fernleigh 15) all experienced significant growth off the back of targeted social media and email campaigns coupled with desirable unique medal designs and themed branding (Star Wars Day – Sydney 10)

The ANSW Communications Strategy was focused on delivering relevant and timely content across all channels including Facebook, Twitter, email, YouTube and Instagram through segmentation and targeted content, which resulted in increased engagement and audience growth across all platforms.

    Merchandise

The 2019/2020 season saw ANSW bring merchandise production and sales in-house, with a lot of success. Merchandise ranges were offered at Sydney 10, NSW All Schools, Fernleigh 15, NSW Country Championships and NSW Junior Championships.

    Social Media

ANSW entered into a social media accelerator program with Shunt Creative at the beginning of 2019, along with a number of SSO’s from around the country with the objective of growing our social media channels through collaboration and analytical feedback.

The program was a success for ANSW, achieving the majority of KPI’s set and has now expanded to our RunNSW channels for 2020, along with a number of new SSO’s and some NSO’s signing up to the program.

    Commercial

2019/20 welcomed some new commercial partners in various capacities across both ANSW core business and RunNSW events.

The Australian College of Physical Education (ACPE) became the naming rights partner of the NSW All Schools and NSW Junior Track and Field Championships in 2019 and we look forward to continuing to build on the relationship through 2020 and beyond.

ANSW were engaged by Sony for a Professional Sports Photography event that was held at the end of 2019 with plans to expand the partnership in 2020.

Global giant Under Armour became a partner of the RunNSW series in 2019 and had a presence at Sydney 10, Sydney Half and Fernleigh 15. ANSW continued partnerships with Wholesale Trophies and 2XU.

Greater Bank extended their partnership as the naming rights holder and 5km Fun Run sponsor of the RunNSW series. This strategic partnership enables The Greater Bank to further their reach within regional NSW and to develop the RunNSW brand across communities in NSW to be involved in recreational running and their local running clubs.

Target Talent ProgramThe Athletics NSW Target Talent Program (ANSWTTP) is a development pathway program for junior athletes aged 15 to 18 years old. The program is closely aligned with the activities of Athletics Australia’s High Performance Department and seeks to provide educational and event specific practical training opportunities to aspiring junior athletes during the out of season months of June to November.

Athletes are invited to participate in the Target Talent Program based on their achievement of the relevant ANSWTTP entry standards for their age and event during the 2018/2019 domestic season. The TTP has been specifically designed to develop not only the athlete, but also their coach through engagement in educational workshops and by fostering a mentoring approach that is implemented by our state event group coaches.

The TTP acts as a talent identification component within the Athletics Australia High Performance Pathway and has seen a number of NSW junior athletes go onto be selected in junior and youth Australian teams. ANSW also implements a vision and purpose for the program which assist in guiding direction within the design and implementation of the program:

The Target Talent program is funded and implemented in collaboration with Athletics Australia, whose continued support has seen the program’s sustained

growth over the years; 2016 saw 60 athletes engaged in the program, 80 athletes took part during 2017, 2018 saw 132 athletes participate with 132 athletes again taking part in the 2019 program.

The TTP program would not be possible without the state event group coaches who delivered the practical training components across 11 event groups. ANSW thanks the 2019 TTP coaches for providing their time and expertise.

    MEMBERSHIP AND CLUBS

In 2019/2020 Athletics NSW saw a continuation of the OneSport Athletics initiative now known as “OneAthletics”. Throughout the year there was an increase of Little Athletics Centres affiliated with Athletics NSW. These jointly affiliated clubs are continuing to provide a pathway from junior to senior athletics.

The 2019/2020 season commenced with the roll out of a new membership and competition entry platform, Revolutionise Sport. This was a welcome development for club administrators and the members themselves. The benefits and ease of registration were commented on positively by the ANSW members and club administrators.

MembershipAthletics NSW has continued its focus of inclusive and accessible membership.

The Dual Membership program continued this season, giving free Athletics NSW membership to U12 to U17 registered Little Athletics members. This provides

U12-U17 LANSW members access and exposure to senior athletics programs with a specific focus on the NSW Club Relays and NSW Club Championships. Dual membership aims to retain the interest of the younger athletes and provide a pathway into senior athletics. The junior membership category has continued to increase annually as we see a transition for the younger athletes through to ANSW memberships.

ClubsAthletics NSW is committed to strengthing clubs and their capacity. We have been working closely with the clubs this season to strengthen relationships. Club administrators also now can voice feedback in a club forum setting. These forums were hosted at some of the larger Athletics NSW events and saw a great turnout of clubs in which we were able to gather great feedback and ideas.
