Die Porzellanherstellung hat in Thüringen eine lange Tradition. Im Jahr 1844 begann der Kaufmann Christian Jacob Eckardt in der Kleinstadt Kahla mit der Herstellung von Tassen, Pfeifen und Puppenköpfen aus Porzellan. Bereits Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts zählte die Porzellanfabrik zu den größten Porzellanherstellern Deutschlands.

Seit der Neugründung im Jahr 1994 investierte KAHLA mehr als 28 Millionen Euro in neue Technologien und Anlagen und zählt damit heute zu einem der modernsten Porzellanunternehmen Europas.

„Made in Germany“ ist das Bekenntnis des Unternehmens zum Standort Kahla. Die KAHLA/Thüringen Porzellan GmbH beschäftigt 300 engagierte Mitarbeiter und über 20 Auszubildende.

Jährlich erleben zahlreiche Besucher in einer Führung durch die moderne Porzellanproduktion hautnah die Herstellung des „Porzellans für die Sinne“ – eine spannende Mischung aus Handarbeit und hochmoderner Technologie.

Porcelain production has a long tradition in the German federal state of Thuringia. In 1844 the businessman Christian Jacob Eckardt started with the production of porcelain cups, pipes and dolls heads in the small town of Kahla. Already at the beginning of the 20th century the porcelain factory had become one of Germany’s largest porcelain manufacturers.

Since the refounding in 1994, KAHLA has invested more than EUR 28 million in state-of the-art technology and has become one of Europe’s most modern porcelain manufacturers.

“Made in Germany“ is the company’s commitment to the location Kahla. Today, KAHLA/Thüringen Porzellan GmbH employs 300 committed employees and more than 20 apprentices.

Every year, numerous vistors experience the production of the “Porcelain for the Senses“ during a guided tour to the modern porcelain production – an exciting mixture of handwork and modern technology.

Modernes Design, die individuelle Gestaltung über die Funktion hinaus, ist das Markenmerkmal von KAHLA. „Die besten Ideen kommen mir beim Arbeiten mit den Händen“, sagt Barbara Schmidt, KAHLAs Designerin, deren Porzellankollektionen mit zahlreichen internationalen Designpreisen ausgezeichnet wurden.

Auch die Nachwuchsförderung und die Zusammenarbeit mit Hoch-schulen wie der Burg Giebichenstein Halle oder der Universität der Künste Berlin ist KAHLA wichtig. So unterstützt das Unternehmen als Praxispartner die Studenten und veranstaltet regelmäßig Design-wettbewerbe und den internationalen Porzellanworkshop „KAHLA kreativ“, bei denen spannende neue Ideen rund um das Thema Porzellan entstehen.

Modern design, giving something an individual distinction that goes way beyond the actual function called for – that is the hallmark of the brand KAHLA. “I have my best ideas when I work with my hands”, says Barbara Schmidt, KAHLA’s designer whose porcelain collections have been award numerous international design awards.

The support of young talents and the cooperation with universities like Burg Giebichenstein Halle or Universität der Künste Berlin is important for KAHLA. Seit der Neugründung der KAHLA/Thüringen Porzellan GmbH im Jahr 1994 hat sich die Inhaberfamilie Raithel der Nachhaltigkeit verschrieben. So wird das Porzellan für die Sinne ausschließlich am Standort Kahla in Thüringen produziert. Das Hartporzellan aus natürlichen Rohstoffen ist nach internationalen Standards auf Schadstofffreiheit geprüft.

Das Unternehmen verwendet im Rahmen der Nachhaltigkeitsstrategie „KAHLA pro Öko“-Strategie eigene Brunnen und spart durch Wasseraufbereitung Millionen Liter Wasser ein. Die Investition in moderne Technologien verringert deutlich den CO2-Ausstoß. Den Höhepunkt der bisherigen Maßnahmen zur Umsetzung ökologischer Ansprüche in der Porzellanproduktion stellt die Investition von mehreren Millionen Euro in eine Photovoltaikanlage dar, die aus Sonnenenergie umweltfreundlichen Strom für die Porzellanproduktion gewinnt.

Since the refounding of KAHLA/Thüringen Porzellan GmbH in 1994, the owner family Raithel has dedicated itself to sustainability. Therefore the porcelain for the senses is exclusively produced at the Kahla site in Thuringia, Germany. The hard porcelain made of natural raw materials is checked according to international standards to ensure that it is free from harmful substances.

In the scope of the „KAHLA pro Eco“ sustainability strategy, the company uses in house wells and saves millions of litres of water via water preparation. CO2 emissions are significantly reduced by investments in modern technology. The high point of the previous measures to implement ecological claims in porcelain production is the investment of several million Euros in a photovoltaic system, which generates ecological electricity from solar energy for the porcelain production.

Begleitet von Deutschlands erstem Kaffee-Sommelier, Michael Gliss, von kleinen Kaffeeröstern, Baristas und anderen Kaffee-Enthusiasten sind wir tief in die Welt des Kaffees eingedrungen, um zu lernen, wie man ihn zu einem richtig guten Getränk macht. Und mit diesem Wissen die passenden Tassen zu entwickeln, es zu genießen. Bei der Entwicklung der Tassenformen und all ihrer Details wie Größe, Wandstärke, Rand- und Innenform, Henkel und Sitz auf den Untertassen hatte die Designerin Barbara Schmidt nur eins im Sinn: Sie als Werkzeuge zu gestalten, die Aroma und Geschmack des Kaffees nach allen Regeln der Kunst aufs beste zur Geltung bringen.

Good coffee. You can see it, smell it, taste it. With a beautiful cup you can also feel it. Accompanied by Michael Gliss, Germany‘s first coffee sommelier and by small coffee roasters, baristas and other coffee enthusiasts we delved deeply into the world of coffee in order to learn how to make it a really good beverage. And armed with this knowledge we set out to design the right cups for savouring it.

When developing the cup designs and all their details such as size, wall thickness, rim design, inner shape, handles and the fit on the saucers, designer Barbara Schmidt had only one thing in mind: To artfully design them as tools that best accentuate the aromas and flavours of coffee.

Centuries ist Porzellan für die alltäglichen kleinen Freuden. Aber manchmal darf es auch die ganz große Tafel sein, liebevoll kom-poniert wie ein Stilleben. Die nach festem Bauplan gedeckte Tafel mit ihrer prachtvollen Atmosphäre ist ein Relikt aus dem 18. Jahr-hundert. So eine Stimmung hat ihren Reiz, aber viel schöner ist das Ensemble, wenn Sie es selbst zusammengestellt haben!

Porzellan ist härter als Stahl und doch zerbrechlich. Es ist ein Material für subtile Effekte: Dinge, die man auf den zweiten Blick entdeckt. Feine Strukturen auf Porzellan lassen sich mit den Fingern fühlen, aber außer dem haptischen Reiz gibt es auch fürs Auge etwas Besonderes: Ein Schattenrelief, das unter der transparenten Glasur liegt. Reliefdetails, die zu zart sind, ertastet zu werden, wer-fen ihre Schatten und lassen nur für das Auge erfahrbare Muster entstehen, die aus jedem Blickwinkel anders wirken. So etwas gibt es bei keinem anderen Material.

Centuries is porcelain for the small pleasures of everyday life. But sometimes you may want a festive table, lovingly arranged like a still life. The idea to lay a table according to a set plan dates back to the royal courts of the eighteenth century. Today you are free to create arrangements as you please.

Porcelain is stronger than steel yet fragile. It is a material for fine details. Beneath the textures that can be felt with your fingers there is a second layer: the shadow relief. It is covered by glaze and looks different from every angle. You won‘t find this with any other material!

The idea of Centuries was to reinterpret trusted motifs and textures and to integ-rate them into porcelain concepts for the present day. This isn‘t a standard dinner service; it‘s a colourful selection of beau-tiful objects that enrich their users with endless possible combinations.

Porcelain by KAHLA was tested for use value by a renowned German ceramics institute (Meissen Ceramics Institute). The fol low ing parameters were found which typically characterise porcelain for professional use:

The following values were found:

WhitenessThe whiteness as the determiner of the glost-fired, glazed body was above average in all analysed samples of the KAHLA collections. This secures a high position for the KAHLA products among the industry leaders.

Colour definitionThe colour definition decides the brightness and hue of the glost-fired body. We found brightness values between 86 and 88 for our products, which is virtually ideal. The measured hue shows that our products are nearly colour-neutral.

Edge strengthThe balanced body composed to meet the requirements of the user secures an extremely high edge strength of the plate edge of our collections. This ensures maximum reuse frequency of these products in the hotel and restaurant industry.

Thermal shock resistanceFlat china, which comes under most heavy strain in use, often is also exposed to high thermal load. The analysis of thermal shock behav-iour yielded convincing results. The limit established by the Meissen Ceramics Institute was at 285 Kelvin.

TolerancesConsisting of natural components, porcelain may react to changes in temperature or humidity during the production process, leading to small differences in material content, size or weight. KAHLA ensures that these tolerances do not exceed 5% and that each delivery con-tains identical items.

WeißgradDer die optischen Eigenschaften des glattgebrannten glasierten Por-zellanscherbens bestimmende Weißgrad wies bei allen untersuchten KAHLA Formen überdurchschnittlich gute Werte aus. Das heißt, dass sich die Produkte von KAHLA im Rahmen branchenüblicher Spitzen-werte bewegen.

FarbbestimmungMit der Farbbestimmung werden Helligkeit und Farbtönung des glattgebrannten Porzellanscherbens ausgewiesen. Mit ermittelten Helligkeitswerten im Bereich zwischen 86 bis 88 wird bei unseren Erzeug nissen nahezu der mögliche Idealwert erreicht. Die gemessene Farbtönung zeigt weitgehende Farbneutralität.

KantenschlagfestigkeitDie ausgewogene, für die Belange des Endverbrau chers bestimmte Scherbenkonstruktion führt bei unseren Formen zu einer außerge-wöhnlich hohen Kantenschlagfestigkeit am Tellerrand. Diese Eigen schaft gewährleistet eine optimale Anzahl von Wiederver-wendungszyklen unseres Porzellans in der Hotellerie und Gastronomie.

TemperaturwechselbeständigkeitDie im Gebrauch am meisten beanspruchten Flach geschirrartikel werden in der Praxis oftmals einer hohen thermischen Belastung ausgesetzt. Auch hier belegen die gemessenen Temperaturkennwerte die Möglichkeit höchster thermischer Beanspruchung für den Ver-wender. Die im Keramik-Institut Meißen ermittelten Werte weisen fast ausschließlich den möglichen Höchstwert von 285 Kelvin aus.
