Page 5: Valence Electrons

The electrons in the outer energy level are called valence electrons

What are valence electrons?

Practice

Page 6: Valence Electrons

How do we know how many valence electrons does an element have?

• The group number tells us how many valence electrons are in each element.

Page 7: Valence Electrons

Atoms of elements in the same group have the same number of electrons in the outer orbitals/levels of their atoms Exceptions:

Transition elements (3-12) Helium (actually has 2 valence electrons)

Group 1 = 1 electron

Group 2 = 2 electrons

Group 8 = 8 electrons

Except for He, it has 2 electrons

Step 1. Complete the card for each element. Complete the top section for each element by adding the element’s 1. atomic number 2. name and 3. atomic mass.

4. Determine the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in each element.

5. Create a Bohr diagram for each element.
