AATTENTIONTTENTIONTAXPAYERS of the

TOWN OF PALATINEIf you recall, your Town Board voted to purchase

a new 10-wheel plow truck at a very high cost to

the taxpayer ($215,000.00). With this purchase it

keeps the town’s plowing fleet at 6 trucks to do 67

miles of roads. Last month I listed a few of the

Townships in Montgomery County as to how they

handle their snow removal, The following is a

continuation of that list:

Town of Florida - 5 Trucks - 92 miles of roads

Town of Minden - 4 Trucks - 88 miles of roads

Town of Mohawk - 4 Trucks - 65 miles of roads

Town of Amsterdam - 5 Trucks - 59 miles of roads

Next month I will conclude this list using the last

two Townships as an example of what can be done

to keep our ever-expanding budget under control.

If you are interested in attending a town meeting,

it is held the 4th Wednesday of the month at

6:30 p.m. at 141 W. Grand St., Palatine Bridge.

March 9, 2013Hello Again,

What's new in your life? What would you say if I told you one of our local boys would someday become

one of the greatest unsung heroes of the United States and most of the industrialized countries of

the world?

Let's wander back 131 years ago to May 1882 and visit the Kaiser family home in Sprout Brook, New

York, just a few miles south of Fort Plain and Canajoharie. While visiting at a little house in the Sprout

Brook village, father Kaiser's greeting attached to a big friendly smile, while handing you the custom-

ary cigar, would have said, "We have a big baby son born early this morning. We named him Henry J.

Kaiser."

Father Kaiser would never live long enough to learn his little baby son 60 years later, in the 1940's,

would become one of America's greatest earthly saviors or end up becoming an unsung hero.

Without his genius and effort we - of the United States - probably would have lost the 2nd World

War. Britain and Europe would absolutely have fallen under Hitler's control.

During the early years of the II World War, German "U" boats patrolled the Atlantic Ocean between

the American continent and Europe. These U-boats, or submarines, were able to destroy or sink near-

ly ever military or commercial ocean vessel the U.S. sent to aid the war effort. The major problem we

were not able to protect these troop-armament ships due to lack of destroyer ships, escort-type

ships whose job was to surround and hold off the subs. In fact, we did not have enough ships to sup-

port the war effort to start with.

During those early war years, huge airplanes had not come into the picture. A ship, or hundreds of

ships, was the only answer. No ships - no men - no armaments. Hitler would have gained control of

most of the European and American continent countries.

We could not build ships fast enough. Generally speaking, it took several months to build one ship

large enough to serve in the war effort. Crossing the Atlantic Ocean was an easy target for Hitler's

submarines.

Henry J. Kaiser, by the 1940's, was already in his 60's, and had proven himself to be a very accom-

plished businessman. After studying the present ship building process he formulated a plan to build

prefabricated ships and instead of being bolted together by thousands of bolts, they developed a

welding procedure attaching large prefabricated sections together and not bolted one piece at a time.

The name Henry Kaiser exploded on the country when one of his liberty ships was built in 4 days as

opposed to several months. I read somewhere a smaller ship was actually prefabricated and complete-

ly built in less than three days.

The Kaiser invention, pre-fabricated welded

wartime ships, made it possible to turn out com-

pleted ships in weeks rather than several

months. It has been said that the Kaiser-built

Liberty ships were one of the main reasons for

our country's and England's success in winning

World War II.

During the war years, Kaiser's shipyards built thousands of ships, and we all know who won the war.

Page 7: Valley Pennysaver 3.9.13

Original Valley PENNYSAVER • March 9, 2013 Page 7

We introduced this short bio of Henry Kaiser as one of our local boys. In addition to shipbuilding,

what else did Henry J. of Sprout Brook do? While still in his 30's and 40's, his company built roads

all over the country and in Cuba, and built the Hoover and Grand Coulee Dams. Later in life after the

Second World War he manufactured Kaiser-Frazier cars along with Jeeps, was a hospital builder and

the founder of Kaiser Aluminum and Kaiser Steel in California and Hawaii while becoming one of the

largest property owners in California and Hawaii.

The standard size Kaiser cars

were considered to be the safest

cars on the road.

What point are we trying to make with this biography of Henry J. Kaiser? Simply this - this person

who was born here in our valley was able in his life to start, own, and control huge industries in this

country creating possibly millions of jobs and if we pull together, that is all of us, we can accomplish

something truly worth while for the Palatine Corridor.

There is a saying, "It doesn't count where we start from. It only matters where we end up." May I

add, if we don't get started we will end up in the same place. First a dream - then hope - next action.

I've heard spring is just around the corner although it might be advisable to not pack away your

long johns. An apple a day keeps the doctor away, while a smile creates new friends.

An upstate New York crop farmer, while visiting with a representative of the Department of

Agriculture, stated that his next door farmer friend always seemed to be luckier with crops than he

was. For example, he said he receives more rain. "That's strange," replied the government man. "How

is that possible?" he asked. "He's got more land than I do," was the reply.

Still curious of the better luck the neighbor seemed to have, the Department of Agriculture repre-

sentative asked another neighbor for some insight. The neighbor said, "Maybe the weather doesn't

agree with him."

For about 2,000 years, the Lord's Prayer has been understood, appreciated,

and recited. It contains 56 words; Lincoln's Gettysburg address was 260 words,

taught to fifth graders and understood. The Declaration of Independence, with

3,000 words is loved and appreciated. While Obama's health program is nearly

3,000 pages and no one understands what it says.

Take your problems to the Lord and thank him for choosing you to live.

Fred Lee and Family

The little "Henry J" was born ahead of its time.

Most American's favored bigger cars with more horse

power. Now it appears Henry Kaiser could look into

the future and see the need for smaller - more eco-

nomical cars. My father loved his Henry J.

In Loving Memory ofRobert Paul Crouse Sr.

It’s been a year since you’vebeen gone, but it really doesn’t seem that long.

I see you all aroundthe house in everythingI touch. I guess that’s

only natural when you lovedsomeone so much.

Your children are coping the best theycan but in reality they wish that once

more they could touch your hand.

We take comfort in knowing you are nolonger in pain and that you can walk

and talk once again.

Our 50 and 1/2 years together went sofast but of me you have not seen the last.We will surely be together again in God’stime and in the meantime, I will try to do

all the things you wanted me to do.

Love You Always,Your wife Karen

Q: I have a Sheaf-fer’s Lifetime fountainpen, in excellent con-dition. How much is itworth? — Mrs. F.V.,Rio Rancho, NM

A: According to“Collecting Pens” byEdward Kiersh, if yourpen was manufac-tured in 1950 and is aLifetime Triumph withTouchdown filler, itcould be worth $125in new to excellentcondition.

Q: We have a stove-top waffle iron thatwas manufactured byStover. We would liketo know if it has anyvalue as a collectible.— Hershel and Freda,

Jackson, MOA: Prices depend on

rarity and desirability.Although I could notfind your particularwaffle iron in my refer-ence books, a rule ofthumb is that themore intricate the waf-fle iron, the higher theprice. For example, the Yum Yum waffleiron manufactured byGriswold for hotelkitchens is valued atbetween $500 and$1,200, depending onsize and model. Mostof the other simplerones fall into the $40to $100 range, againdepending on rarityand desirability. Iwould think that yourwaffle iron might fallinto that range, too.

REALESTATE

by David UffingtonLow interest rates

not always a bargainWith mortgage

interest rates remain-ing low, people whobuy a home thisspring may be lulledinto accepting therates they’re offered, certain that whateverthey get is a good dealcompared to previousyears.

Without lookingclosely at all thedetails, however, addi-tional factors cancome into play thatmake a low interestrate not much of abargain after all.

Go Banking Rates(www.gobankingrates.com) offers fourthings to watch forwhen signing up for anew mortgage.

Length of the loan:While 30-year fixedrate mortgages havebeen the most popularfor years, new optionsallow some consumersto stretch their mort-gage out for 40 yearsor even 50 years. Atfirst glance, this extra10 to 20 years bringsthe monthly paymentdown and may allowconsumers to move upinto properties theynever would havebeen able to consider. However, the length ofthe loan means thatmuch more interestwill be paid over thelife of the loan.

Private Mortgage In-surance: Consumerswho purchase a homewith less than a full20 percent down haveto purchase privatemortgage insurance,

which is insurance forthe lender in case ofdefault.

Not only is PMIexpensive (1/2 per-cent to 1 percent ofthe total loan), but thecost, when added tomonthly expenses, could keep a con-sumer from qualifyingfor a home in a partic-ular price bracket.PMI is supposed to becancelled when thehome reaches an 80percent loan-to-valueratio. In truth, PMI isvery difficult to get ridof, as lenders willchange the require-ments.

Overvalued proper-ty: Municipalitiesdon’t change their taxassessments everyyear, so a propertymay still be listed at ahigher rate, eventhough property val-ues have dropped.Appeals to the proper-ty tax board should bedone quickly, if there’sany doubt aboutwhether the assess-ment is current.Refunds often are lim-ited to only the prioryear.

Refinancing: Even ifrefinancing at a lowerrate, there might notbe any real savings. The reason is that theold loan is beingretired and a new loangenerated — with allthe typical costs of abrand-new homemortgage. Be sure tofind out in advancewhat each of the feesand closing costs willbe.

Dollars and sense

You can find out byasking yourself somequestions:

Do I have a steadysource of income(usually a job)?

Have I beenemployed on a regular

basis for the last 2-3years?

Is my currentincome reliable?

Do I have a goodrecord of paying mybills?

Do I have few out-

standing long-termdebts, like car pay-ments?

Do I have moneysaved for a down pay-ment?

Do I have the abilityto pay a mortgage

every month, plusadditional costs?

If you can answer“yes” to these ques-tions, you are proba-bly ready to buy yourown home.

Bridal

(StatePoint) — Just engaged? Before thosewedding bells ring, you’re going to do lots ofplanning in the months ahead. While most ofyour preparations will only matter on the firstday of your marriage, your wedding registrywill impact your happily ever after.

Wedding experts say to ensure domesticbliss, make the most of your registry withproper planning, research and free resources.

• Don’t delay: You’ll likely have multipleoccasions that requires gift-giving on the partof friends and family. So register early.

Opt for a registry that offers convenienceand good customer service. A store with loca-tions nationwide and an online ordering sys-tem will make it easy for you and your guests.

• Take inventory: Assess what you alreadyhave, what you don’t have and what needsreplacing. A walk through your home using aregistry checklist can help you build a list.

Talk to your fiancée and work together. Also, think about what you need now and in

the future — you might be dining for two, butsoon you could be hosting a dinner party for12 and will want dinnerware worthy of theoccasion.

• Ask for help: Don’t be shy about seekingadvice.

Visit a store and talk with an expert consult-ant who can help with gift selections and offertips on what you’ll need to enjoy your home.

Be sure to research the items that go onyour registry. Touch the towels, hold the flat-ware — you may need to visit the store multi-ple times to get it right. If you change yourmind, remember it’s always possible to updateyour registry online at any time.

• Dream big and small: Not all guests will beworking with the same budget, so include arange of items at various price points.

Guests will appreciate the variety for individ-ual and group gifts.

• Return Policy: Check a store’s return poli-cy before registering so you can return orexchange any gift on your list and live hassle-free ever after.

(BPT) — Owning a home means giving con-stant attention to the building products thatgo into protecting the structure of your house. While we’d like to believe items like our roof, siding and windows will last forever, that’s notthe case.

Mark Clement, co-host of the national homeimprovement radio show MyFixitUp Life, offersa variety of tips for knowing when it’s time toreplace products on your home.

Tips for evaluating your roof1. Using either a ladder or binoculars from

across the street, look for problem areas, suchas missing or broken shingles, along with roof-ing tiles that may be “flapping” in the wind.

Tips for knowingwhen it’s time

to replace productson your home

2. Check the sides of your roof. The south-ern exposure weathers significantly fasterthan the other sides of the roof, so make sureto carefully examine this area. Also, shallowerpitches weather faster than steeper pitches. Soagain, if your roof has a shallow pitch — like ashed dormer — make certain you can clearlysee it to get a true indication of the conditionof your roof.

Tips for assessing your windows1. Evaluate the functionality of your current

windows. If you have condensation betweenglass panes, the windows are hard to open orclose, your energy bills are soaring, or if thereare drafts coming in around the window units, then it’s time to seriously consider replace-ment windows.

2. Look at the frames of your windows. If youspend too much time scraping paint andrepainting wood frames, consider an invest-ment in vinyl-framed, low-maintenance win-dows.Tips for knowing when to replace a front

door1. If you can see light around your main

entry door from the inside, the door is hard toclose or lock, or the door itself is warped, it’stime to consider a new door.

2. Think about the weather conditions yourhome’s door faces along with your energy bills. If either run to the extreme, consider replacingyour entry door with a high-performance fiber-glass door. Doors with enhanced weatherstripping, corner seal pad, door bottom sweepand profiled sill provide more strength andstability in your entry door. TAX TIME

Here are five tips from the IRS to helpyou determine if your benefits are taxable:

1. The amount of your income and yourfiling status affect whether you must paytaxes on your Social Security.

2. If Social Security was your onlyincome in 2012, your benefits are probablynot taxable. You also may not need to file afederal income tax return.

3. If you received income from othersources, then you may have to pay taxeson your benefits.

4. You can follow these two quick steps tosee if your benefits are taxable:

• Add one-half of the Social Security ben-efits you received to all your other income, including tax-exempt interest. Tax-exemptinterest includes interest from state andmunicipal bonds.

• Next, compare this total to the ‘baseamount’ for your filing status. If the total ismore than your base amount, then some ofyour benefits may be taxable.

The three 2012 base amounts are:$25,000 for single, head of household,

qualifying widow or widower with adependent child or married individuals fil-ing separately who did not live with theirspouse at any time during the year;$32,000 for married couples filing joint-

ly; and$0 for married persons filing separately

who lived together at any time during theyear.

(NAPSI) — Your carcan go farther for lessif you take a few stepsto keep it efficient.

It helps to takemeticulous care ofyour vehicle by follow-ing the manufactur-er’s recommendedmaintenance sched-ules and using theright products insideand out. This includesgetting your oilchanged, rotatingyour tires, checkinghoses and belts forwear, replacing wornwindshield wipers andkeeping your vehicleclean.

Another way to

extend the life of yourvehicle and improvefuel efficiency is tomake sure your fuelsystem is clean.

To help, here are afew fuel systembasics.

What does a fuelsystem do? A fuelsystem’s job is toproperly maintain fueldemand. The fuel iseventually sprayedfrom the fuel injectorsinto the intake streamand into the combus-tion chamber.

What does a fuelsystem consist of?Depending on whetherit’s a return or a

returnless fuel sys-tem, it can consist ofthe fuel tank, fuelpump, sending fuellines, fuel rail, fuelinjectors, fuel pres-sure regulator andreturning fuel lines. Ifyou have a returnlesssystem, there is nofuel pressure regula-tor or return fuellines.

How do I know myfuel system needs tobe cleaned? If yourfuel injectors havebecome clogged fromdeposits, they are notable to provide thewide and fine spray offuel needed for thespark to ignite it.There are a few signsthat may indicate youneed to clean your fuelsystem.

• You are gettinglower gas mileage.

• There is a hesita-tion when you putyour foot on the gaspedal.

• You are experienc-ing a loss of powerwhen driving yourvehicle.

One easy and con-venient solution is touse a total fuel systemcleaner.

Fuel system mainte-nance can easily beadded to your regularvehicle maintenanceroutine.

Not only will itimprove your vehicle’sfuel efficiency, it cansave you from havingto make costly repairsthat may be neededwhen fuel deposits areleft to build up.

by Dr. Leonard Perry, Ex-tension Professor, Univer-sity of Vermont

You don’t have to beIrish to wear green on St.Patrick’s Day, nor do youneed a green thumb togrow shamrocks indoors. This plant, which is asso-ciated with this March 17holiday, is quite easy togrow.

Shamrocks are a mem-ber of the Oxalis (woodsorrel) family, which con-tains more than 300species. Most of thesegrow from small bulbs al-though some have tuber-ous roots. The distin-guishing characteristic isthe three rounded or tri-angular-shaped leaves at

the end of delicate stems. Most oxalis plants foldup their leaves at night, hugging them tight to thestems until daylight“wakes them up” again —described botanically as“nyctinastic movement.”Due to oxylates in plants, they may be toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if in-gested in large quantities.

The familiar St.Patrick’s Day species(Oxalis acetosella) isavailable at florist shopsand many grocery storesthis time of year. It hastiny, dark green, triangu-lar leaves and grows to aheight of about six inch-es. This variety hailsfrom Europe, Iceland, and Asia. It is not the of-ficial Irish shamrock (Tri-folium dubium) — a yel-low-flowered clover ortrefoil — which is whatthe majority feel is the

authentic species. Thatclover is difficult to growindoors, so nurseries andflorists sell Oxalis plantsinstead.

If you are wonderinghow the shamrock be-came part of Irish histo-ry, there are many expla-nations going back to thesignificance placed bythe ancient Celtic peo-ples in the number three. The most popular story isthat St. Patrick, who iscredited with bringingChristianity to Ireland inthe second half of thefifth century, onceplucked a shamrockfrom the grass at his feetto illustrate the doctrineof the Holy Trinity to hiscongregation. St.Patrick’s Day, which iscelebrated on the an-niversary of his death, also heralds the arrival ofspring. The shamrockwas adopted as a symbolof both this patron saintand the “season of re-birth,” and can be seenon ancient coins and me-dieval tombs.

Shamrocks like coolair, moist soil (except intheir dormant period),

and bright light. Idealtemperatures are be-tween 50 and 65 degrees(F), and over 75 degreesmay cause plants to be-come dormant. Soilsshould not be kept toowet or waterlogged. If theplant yellows, it may begetting too much waterand roots may rot. Toolittle water and it obvi-ously wilts. Too littlelight, or too muchwarmth, and plants mayget tall and lanky.

They do not have anextensive root system, sounlike many plants, ac-tually prefer to be crowd-ed in a pot. However, ifthe plant dries out tooquickly, you may need tomove it into a larger pot.Fertilize every two tothree weeks while theplant is actively growingor flowering, using regu-lar houseplant fertilizer. For application rate, fol-low directions on thecontainer.

Be aware that no mat-ter how much care yougive this plant, at times itwill look sick and lose itsleaves. This dormant pe-riod, which often occurs

during summer, is part ofthe growing process com-mon to all plants grownfrom bulbs. During dor-mancy, stop watering.Let the leaves die backnaturally, then removedead, brown leaves. Placethe plant in a cool, darkplace while it goesthrough its dormancyperiod. Plants generally“sleep” for about threemonths. New greenshoots signal that theplant is waking up andneeds to be moved backinto the light.

To divide your sham-rocks, wait until thebulbs reach the end of adormant cycle. Takethem out of the pot, andremove small side bulbs. Then replant, just underthe surface, in a mix ofpotting soil and sand.Place in a non-south fac-ing window. Water, keep-ing the surface just moistto the touch, until plantsbecome established.

Other Oxalis varietieshave similar growth re-quirements though manygo through a shorter, orno, dormancy period. De-pending on the variety,

the plant may have yel-low, white, pink, purple,or red flowers and growas tall as 10 inches. Leafcolor ranges from darkgreen to deep red. Thosewith dark red or purplishleaves only need about amonth of dormancy.

Whether you are givingor getting shamrocks thisSt. Patrick’s Day, there’sone more thing to keep inmind. Because theseplants go dormant, shamrocks are not suit-able for growing withother houseplants inmixed pots or planters. Ifyou get a mixed basket ofplants, after the holiday, separate the shamrockfrom the rest and replantin its own container.Don’t wait until the plantturns yellow or sicklylooking. By then, itsroots will be deeply inter-twined with the roots ofother plants and will bedifficult to transplant.

By giving your Sham-rock plant bright light, even moisture, and cooltemperatures, and lettingit go dormant duringsummer, it should pro-vide years of enjoyment.

Shamrocks for St. Patrick’s Day

Q: Sometimes when I open a package of ground beef, the meat has turned gray-ish brown on the inside. It smells okay, but it doesn’t look very appetizing and Iwonder if it’s safe to eat. Is it?

A: Most likely, it’s fine. Ground beef’s bright red color comes from a pigment, myoglobin, which becomes red when exposed to oxygen (turning it into oxymyo-globin).

The plastic wrap covering the ground beef you see in the grocery store is per-meable, allowing some oxygen to seep through and keep the meat on the exteri-or red. But ground beef that’s not exposed to oxygen — like the meat that’s onthe interior — will often lose its red color after a few days.

However, if the ground beef is gray or brown throughout, it could be beginningto spoil. If you do detect an off odor or if the meat seems sticky or slimy, throwit away. Although bacteria that cause spoilage don’t always cause illness, there’sno sense in taking a chance.

Bacteria that can cause illness are really of more concern, but unfortunatelythey don’t announce their presence through changes in appearance or aroma.Salmonella, E. coli O157:H7 (or other types of E. coli that produce Shiga toxin),Campylobacter jejuni, Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus haveall been associated with ground beef and can cause severe illness, or even fatal-ities, especially in vulnerable people including children, the elderly or anyonewho lives with a chronic illness. To minimize the chance that these bacteria couldmultiply and thereby increase the risk they could cause illness, be sure groundbeef is stored at 40 degrees F or lower, cooked to an internal temperature of 160degrees F, and otherwise handled properly.

Ground beef should be kept in the refrigerator — in the coldest part — for onlyone or two days before being cooked. Place it in the freezer for longer-term stor-age, but even there it can lose quality over time; it’s best to use it within fourmonths.

Use freezer paper or freezer-quality plastic bags to help prevent freezer burn —indicated by grayish-brown leathery spots on the surface. That’s caused by aircoming into contact with the food. Again, those spots aren’t unsafe, but they’ll betasteless and chewy; you’ll want to trim them away either before or after cooking.

The U.S. Agriculture Department has more information about safety and qual-ity issues related to ground beef on its Food Safety and Inspection Service web-site, at http://bit.ly/grdbeef.

Chow Line is a service of Ohio State University Extension and the Ohio Agricul-tural Research and Development Center.

Specialss •• Drawingss •• Give-A-Ways!

We all knew that Maple Weekend was a fun event for the entire family. Nowscientific research shows there's something more to the taste of sweet, deliciousmaple syrup - it might just keep you healthy. Recent studies have uncoveredsome significant health benefits.

A University of Rhode Island researcher has found 20 compounds in maplesyrup that play an important role in our health (ScienceDaily, 30 Mar. 2011).Some of these compounds have been shown to fight cancer, diabetes and bacte-rial illnesses.

Other established health benefits of pure maple syrup include the calcium andpotassium content - a quarter cup of maple syrup has more calcium than thesame amount of milk and more potassium than a banana.

The New York State Maple Producers Association invites families from acrossthe Empire State and neighboring areas to learn all about the production ofmaple syrup and other related products. Our goal during Maple Weekend is toshare the taste of real mouth-watering maple syrup with you. Maple producerswill demonstrate how to make syrup -- whether it's simply boiling the sap overan open fire or running it through highly scientific equipment -- the results al-ways taste great!

New York State maple syrup has established a reputation as one of the high-est quality maple syrups in the world. Maple Weekend allows New York Mapleproducers to demonstrate the superiority of their product, and invites the pub-lic to sugarhouses to try for themselves.

From the first Maple Sunday in Wyoming County in the mid 1990s to today'sstate-wide Maple Weekend event, the goal remains the same -- to give the pub-lic a first-hand opportunity to see how maple products are produced, from treeto table, along with the chance to taste and purchase maple products. This year,Maple Weekend takes place March 16-17 and 23-24 from 10 AM - 4 PM eachday. Check our Locations page for a producer near you and to see the dates andtimes that they're open.

The best part is that admission is free!!

If you have a chronic condition like hypertension ordiabetes, a carefully planned diet can have a signifi-cant impact on managing your symptoms and improv-ing your health. During National Nutrition Month®,the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics encouragesconsumers to develop a healthful eating plan that iscentered on personal health concerns and “Eat Right,Your Way, Every Day.”

“While many people understand the role diet playsin overall health, you can actually prevent and man-age specific diseases by eating healthfully, as well,”said registered dietitian and Academy spokespersonAngela Lemond.

“For instance, eating heart-healthy foods can helplower high blood pressure, which reduces the risk ofboth heart attack and stroke. Even if you do not havehigh blood pressure, eating a heart-healthy diet re-duces your chances of heart disease in the future,”Lemond said.

“A healthy eating plan that keeps health concerns inmind will also incorporate individual needs includingpersonal nutrient requirements, food preferences, lifestyle and level of physical activity,” Lemond said. She offers tips to “Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day”while also preventing and managing some of the mostcommon food-related medical conditions:

Hypertension and heart disease• Balance calories with physical activity to manage

weight.• Increase the variety of nutrient-rich foods, such as

fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fat-free and low-fatdairy products and seafood.

• Consume fewer foods with sodium (salt), saturat-

ed fats, trans fats, cholesterol, added sugars and re-fined grains.

Diabetes“To successfully manage diabetes, you need to un-

derstand how foods and nutrition affect your body,”said Lemond. “Good health depends on eating a vari-ety of foods that contain the right amounts of carbo-hydrates, protein and healthy fats, as well as vita-mins, minerals, fiber and water.”

• Eat meals and snacks at regularly scheduledtimes.

• Eat about the same amount of food at each mealor snack.

• Choose healthful foods to support a healthy weightand heart including whole-grain breads, cereals, pas-tas and rice; vegetables and beans; fruits; lean meat, fish, poultry and tofu; low-fat or fat-free milk, cheeseand yogurt; and healthy fats like olive oil.

• Carbohydrates affect your blood sugar more thanprotein or fat. Keep track of the amount of carbohy-drates you eat to ensure your blood sugar stays ingood control.

Food allergies and intolerances“When foods are cut from your diet, you may be

short-changing yourself on important vitamins andminerals,” said Lemond. “A registered dietitian canhelp ensure you get the nutrition you need for yourhealth and lifestyle.”

• Learn about ingredients in foods. Eggs, wheat, milk and other food allergens often are called by othernames. Food companies specify on product labels ifany major allergens are contained in the food.

• Read labels carefully. Manufacturers might change

ingredients of products without notice, so double-check ingredient labels every time you buy a food, even a familiar one.

• Talk with your day care, school and workplace.Make sure school faculty and staff are aware of yourchild’s food allergies and that they know how to re-spond to adverse reactions your child may experience.Similarly, inform your coworkers of allergies you have. Some people are familiar with food allergies and knowwhat to do if a person has a reaction; others may notand will need your help in keeping your risk for expo-sure low.

Obesity• Establish a new balance between calories con-

sumed and calories burned through physical activity.• Include fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables,

beans and whole grains, which offer plenty of vitaminsand minerals without plenty of calories while keepingyou feeling full longer.

• Watch portion sizes to help manage calorie intakeand cut back on empty calories from added sugars.

“No matter which health concern you have, youneed a registered dietitian on your team who will workwith you to put together a daily meal plan that takesinto account your food preferences, level of physicalactivity and lifestyle,” said Lemond.

As part of this public education campaign, the Acad-emy’s National Nutrition Month website includes a va-riety of helpful tips, games, promotional tools and nu-trition education resources, all designed to spread themessage of good nutrition around the “Eat Right, YourWay, Every Day” theme.

Keep personal health concerns in mind and ‘Eat Right, Your Way, EveryDay’ in National Nutrition Month, says Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) is the largest organization for girls in the world.

Our mission is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Through activities in science and technology, business and economic literacy,

and outdoor and environmental awareness, Girl Scouting provides girls with opportunities for fun and

friendship while fostering the development of leadership skills and self-esteem.

Founded by Juliette Gordon Low in Savannah, Georgia, on March 12, 1912 - over 100 years ago - Girl Scouts of

the USA was chartered by the United States Congress on March 16, 1950. Today, there are over 3.2 million Girl

Scouts: 2.3 million girl members and 890,000 adult members working primarily as volunteers.

The Girl Scout PromiseOn my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law

The Girl Scout LawI will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong,

and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely,

make the world a better place, and to be a sister to every Girl Scout.

(BPT) — You may be dreaming about escaping on a vacation, but the sky-high costs of flights and cruises canquickly turn into a nightmare. If you’re looking to take a break without breaking the bank, a good, old-fash-ioned road trip could be the way to escape. Aside from packing snacks and preparing the perfect playlist, thereare a few things you should consider before venturing out on the open road. A few updates and precautionscan help you avoid the wear and potential safety hazards a long trip can have on your vehicle.

Trip-worthy tiresGood tires are an integral aspect of vehicle safety, and it is extremely important to check your tires before

heading on an extended road trip. According to the Car Care Council, thin tire treads create hazardous drivingconditions, particularly on wet roadways. Thin or worn treads can cause tires to hydroplane and potentiallylead to loss of control of the vehicle. To ensure tires wear evenly and avoid dangerous situations, it is common-ly recommended to have tires rotated every 7,000 miles. This simple routine not only makes for a more depend-able vehicle, but also saves money by extending the life of your tires. Replacing worn tires before a trip is alsoa good idea to ensure you will have no problems while far from home — plus, you may even see better gasmileage.

Brake checkChecking your brakes is an extremely important aspect of routine vehicle maintenance, and you should be

sure your brakes are in prime condition before a long journey. New brake pads and fluid may not be the mostappealing travel expense, but will certainly save you the hassle and cost failed brakes can incur.

Routine maintenanceWhether your trip is 100 miles or 1,000, checking your vehicle mechanics is important before heading out on

the open road. This includes checking and changing your oil, coolant, brake and transmission fluids as need-ed. In addition to its inner workings, make sure all outside components of your vehicle are in top shape. En-sure headlights and blinkers work properly, inspect windshield wipers and review mirrors, and check windowsfor any cracks before setting out.

Take advantage of the preventative tips above and you will have your vehicle ready to hit the open road withno hiccups just in time for vacation season.

Get your car road trip ready for spring
