Vantaa's cultural youth work center is Vernissa Cultural and Multipurpose House.

In Vernissa's animation and film workshops, the young can familiarize themselves with movie-mak-ing and try making their own movies. The free-of-charge workshops give rise to many prize-winning animations and movies every year. You will see both beginning and well-known musicians, theatri-cal and dance performances as well as other per-forming art events on Vernissa's stage. The house also offers training premises for the young.

The Theatre of Tikkurila and Vantaan elävän musiikin yhdistys VELMU ry also operate in Vernis-sa. The Theatre of Tikkurila provides basic art ed-ucation in theater and circus art, whereas VEL-MU arranges monthly youth-targeted club events. Vantaa's other youth houses also offer band activ-ities, theater, dancing, and handicrafts, see map on pages 4–5.

The metropolitan area youth services together ar-range Finland's annual biggest band review Ääni ja Vimma as well as Loistefestari whose themes range from music to theater to dance.

ff Vernissa, Tikkurilantie 36 tel. 09 8392 4451 You will find Vernissa on Facebook too.

CULTURAL YOUTH WORK

Duck PatrolThe street patrol, begun in 1993, derived its name from a car rear window. The vehicle in question had just been Ankkarock's maintenance car, and

somebody had written the word "Ankka", "Duck" on the dirty window. "Duck" became first the patrol's nickname and later its of-ficial name. The logo, still used today, was drawn by a then-10-year-old youngster.

The Duck Patrol consists of special youth workers,

youth workers, and trained volunteers. Any young person, parent, official, or anybody concerned about a young person's behavior can call the Duck Patrol. The employees visit schools and youth houses to inform about their activities. Upon request, they will also speak at various events and, for instance, PTA meetings.

ff West Vantaa tel. 040 717 4216 ff East Vantaa tel. 0400 427 712

Special youth workSpecial-youth-work professionals support the young as regards school attendance, substance abuse, bullying, or any other issue that trou-bles them. The primary target group consists of 13-6-year-olds. You can contact a special youth worker by phone, through Facebook, or you can

visit the youth houses where they attend, among other things, youth evenings. You can meet the employee alone, with a friend, with parents, or with someone else that is close to you. The em-ployee and the young person concerned togeth-er ponder on what kind of support the situation requires. We aim to support the young and their families in their everyday lives. When required, we try to solve matters in cooperation with our part-ners, for example, school employees.

Information and counseling Information and counseling for the young informs about current matters, answers questions, and guides the young forward in problems large and small. The service is meant for 15–25-year-old Van-taa residents. Information and answers can also be found on the jeesi.fi website. In addition, the service arranges theme workshops on, for exam-ple, housing and job-hunting, and produces versa-tile material in the language of the young in coop-eration with various partners.

Rainbow youth activitiesRainbow youths assemble on Thursdays from 17:00 to 20:00 in Tikkurila, Tonttula youth houses. Activities are meant for 13–25-year-olds.

Youth organisations and action groupsYouth Services actively cooperates with pre-youth and youth organisations. We support the organi-sations and action groups by awarding grants, ar-ranging training, and informing about activities.

Organisations and action groups can use youth houses free of charge. All activities shall account for abstinence from intoxicants, sustainable devel-opment, and safety.

It's fun to go camping!Youth Services and organisations arrange camp activities around the year. Kukonnotko camping center in Heinola and Palajärvi camping center in Veikkola provide versatile facilities for camp-ing and course activities. In addition, Kukonnotko camping center is available in the winter as well.

Young people's own projectsWould you like to arrange an event or organize activities? Would you like to influence and bring about changes? Do you have a splendid project idea? Youth Services offers myriad possibilities for you to participate and influence issues that are important to you. For instance, you can partici-pate in groups (Youth Council, youth house influ-

You can belong to an or-ganisation or plan and implement your own pro-ject, for which you can apply activity pay for the young.

Youth councilThe youth council supervises the interests of the young and addresses issues important to the young. Elections take place at 2-year intervals, and 20 members as well as 20 deputies ages 13-18 are selected. The representatives of the youth council have the right to attend and right of dis-cussion at the committees, district committees, as well as the city council.

The youth council assembles on a monthly ba-sis, submits initiatives to the city executive board, gives statements, participates in various work-ing groups, and arranges events targeted at the young. It also cooperates with boards of student associations.

Youth counseling and support center KipinäKipinä offers support and counseling for under-29-year-old Vantaa residents. Come and talk with us if you did not win a further educa-tion place or if you have in-terrupted your studies. We will inform you about, for example, study places and different workshops for the young. Let's find the right way for you together!

Outreach youth workHave you been excluded from education and the labor market? Do you need help to get your life back on track? Outreach youth work supports un-der-29-year-old young people in issues related to, among other things, education and employment, challenges posed by independence, and charting leisure activities.
