HarmonyVariety and

Unity

What elements and principles are present?

UNITYUnity occurs when all

the parts of a home or room are related by one idea through similar characteristics and/or consistency of style. Furniture and accessories

with curved lines

Unity among the design elements = harmonious design

Unity is NOT to be confused with sameness, it is using just enough variety to keep the room from being monotonous and predictable.

A lack of unity may make a small home seem even smaller.

VARIETYDone outside of the unified

theme to create relief from sameness by combining different (compatible) styles and materials.Variety adds interest to a

design.Carrying variety too far

creates confusion and conflict.Using different decorative

style in each room Victorian and southwestern

Group AssignmentEach member of the group is considered an

expert now in design principles and elements. As experts, you will all evaluate each other’s “Favorite Room” pictures to decide how well it uses the elements of design in creating the particular principle of design. Record the group analysis for each picture.

Harmony Assignments Harmonious Bed Comforter Set (comforter, bed skirt, pillow shams, 3 decorative pillows) Design/sketch a bed comforter set that exemplifies a harmonious design. Use the principles of

design with the elements of design, to achieve harmony in the set. Explain your design, discussing the use of the elements and principles of design and how these are used to create variety, unity, and harmony.

(Ie: Identify the point of emphasis. Where are rhythm and balance seen in the design? What form(s) of

balance are present? Remember to use the elements of design to explain these.) Professionally mount this design. Attach a summary to the back explaining     School Harmony Quilt Block Step 1: Get two (2) 8 x 8 square pieces of paper in school colors. White can also be used in

addition to the other 2 colors. Step 2: PENCIL in a one-inch border around the outside of one of your colored square papers. This is a border—do not put anything in the border. Step 3: Using the other color of paper, create a design to fill in the space within the border. It is suggested to keep your pieces to three inches or smaller! Step 4: Glue your pieces to the paper with the border on it - taking caution in using good presentation techniques. Step 5: Turn this Quilt block in separate from your portfolio.
