From the Bridge Coordinator’s desk Our partnership volunteers, Holly Thomas
and Phyllis Carlson, do an awesome job of
finding partners and teammates for all of our
games. Jane Garr helps put teams together for
the 8-is-Enough Swiss team games each month,
and Kim creates sign-up sheets which are on the
table on the mezzanine. If you’d like to play 8-is-
Enough on June 30 and July 6, sign-up or get in
touch with Jane if you are looking for teammates
for those two games. There are five team games
this month, including the 0-499 Swiss on June
16, which award extra points and we’d like to
have a nice attendance for all of them. Thanks
very much Holly, Jane, and Phyllis!
June, July, and August are the months that we
are allowed to hold North American Pair games.
These games award 50% red and 50% black
masterpoints and are sectional rated.
Saturday, June 8, is the World Wide Bridge
Contest game. Hands will be played across the
world and players will receive a booklet with
hand analysis by Eric Kokish. Winners from
each district will be mentioned on the ACBL
website and in the Bulletin. Masterpoint awards
are 50% red and 50% black and are sectional
rated. Our new Bridgemates will be debuted at
this game and you will enjoy the new features.
One feature is that at the end of each round you
will see the results of all the boards played
during that round which allows you to review
them once more to see if results were entered
correctly. At game’s end, both N/S and E/W can
see their game percentage (at that point)
From the president’s desk Not many snowbirds left now, but congratulations
to the few that are remaining. In the last couple of
newsletters, I’ve been congratulating some of the
outstanding volunteers who help keep our bridge
club running smoothly. I’m going to continue with
these congratulations this month, and have picked
my wife, Gini Hauser for recognition. She spends
as much or more time in the VBBC kitchen as she
does in our home kitchen, but that’s all right
because I love to eat out. I do know from listening
to her that she along with Marge Desmery would
love to have more volunteers for the kitchen work
at the club. If you have any interest in helping,
contact either one of these ladies, and they will put
you in the training program to become a kitchen
helper. It’s a relatively short program consisting of
five or six days, four hours each day. The test at
the end of this training period is not difficult, and
anyone receiving a grade of C+ or better will be
allowed to begin kitchen duty. If you fail the test,
you will be allowed to take it a second time, even a
third time if your a male. Happy Summer, Merle Hauser

and a recap of all the North-South contracts and
scores is also listed.
Our June 21, the morning and afternoon games
will be charity games to benefit the Alzheimer’s
Association to support its care and research
programs. The ACBL is calling it “The Longest
Day,” and is a fundraiser to honor the passion,
dedication, and strength displayed by people
with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers every day.
Extra master-points will be awarded.
Many thanks to Marge Desmery, hospitality
chairwoman, for all the delicious snacks
served at the Club on June 4. Helen White,
Tom Pierpont, Ann & Dick Bottelli, Sally
Corcoran, and Melody Gabriel also donated
items. Speaking of hospitality, the Board voted
to reserve a parking space for the kitchen
volunteer of the day. I know everyone
appreciates the volunteers who help with our
daily hospitality in the kitchen, but we need
more volunteers to join in on this effort because
we all enjoy having a snack while playing bridge.
It’s very easy to be a kitchen volunteer. You can
choose your own day and then just come in
(after having parked in your reserved space!)
and use the foods that are in the cupboards or
refrigerator (thanks to our shopper, Jim
Greene) and put it out, then tidy up the kitchen
after the game. Please consider volunteering.
Even, once a month would be wonderful.
We will be having our Firecracker hot dog
lunch on July 4 and will appreciate donations of
side dishes or desserts. We’ll have sign-up
sheets posted on June 25.
Birthday chairman, Sally Corcoran, always
does a fantastic job with the birthday bulletin
boards and cakes and has recruited Judy
Melchiorre (who is responsible for this month’s
creative bulletin board) to contribute her
talents. Thank you, Sally and Judy!

REMINDER: If there is an irregularity at your table, do not
attempt to rectify the situation yourself or
allow the opponents to tell you how it should

director.
VBBC is now participating in The Common Game
each afternoon that we have a pairs game. An
expert gives his analysis on a few of the most
interesting hands of the day on the web site,

scheduled this month. Hope to see you often
at VBBC!
