dais were: Sri Kori Virupakshappa, Sri Anni Virupakshappa and Sri Sunil. Miss Evangeline
welcomed the gathering. The programme began with the invocation by Mrs Jalajakshi, a Lecturer,
followed by lighting the divine lamp by the dignitaries on the dais.
In his inaugural address, the Chief Guest, Prof. V.V.N. Rajendra Prasad focused on the significant
point that ‘Knowing a language is different from knowing about a language’.
The inauguration was presided over by the Principal of Veerashaiva College, Prof. H.Jayaprakash
Gauda, expressed his remarks on this occasion in simple but stuffed with semantic value: ‘The
only objective of this workshop is to ameliorate the present syllabus of English Grammar, catering
to the needs of our students’. Prof. Mastanappa prosed a vote of thanks. Soon after the tea-break
at 11.30 a.m., the audience was all ears to listen to the Keynote address by Prof. V.V.N.
Rajendraprasad who was the cynosure of this event.
The Chief Guest highlighted the point that English is not a foreign language in India. Through
some audio-visual aids, he could distinctly prove how people make mistakes in using English. He
presented umpteen examples of ambiguity like ‘I am going to sell my house along with my wife.’
He reiterated the point that we have to pay attention to our pronunciation also because English is
a non-phonetic language, meaning, spelling and pronunciation do not agree. In a nutshell, he said
that English is the only language through which we can study any other language or literature
under the sun.
After lunch, at 1.30 p.m., Prof. Shanta Nayak, Head of the Department of English and Dean, VSK
Univeristy, Ballari, fascinated the audience with his illustrations of how people realize the
significance of English, later in life and how we are forced to learn it, may it be scholastic or
collegiate level. He referred
to the problems of
infrastructure, strength of the
students in the classroom,
students with varied
capabilities and time
constraints.
The next session at 03.30
p.m., was taken over by Prof.
Robert Jose, Department of
English, VSK University,
Ballari. The theme was
“Analysis of the present
