Venetian carnival

• The first recorded carnival occurred in1268. It was outlawed in the 1930’s, and was not revived until the 1980’s.
• Carnival starts two weeks before Ash Wednesday and ends on Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras day.
Carnival time!
Traditionally masks were used in carnivals. After a while, they were banned from going into religious places with them on.
Types of masks!• One type of mask is the Bauta which
means, “mask which covers the whole face, with a stubborn chin line, no mouth, and lots of gilding”.
• The next was the Moretta, which is an oval mask of black velvet that was usually worn by women visiting convents.
• Lastly, the larva which is also called the volto. It is mainly white and typically Venetian!

How they were made!
• They would be made out of leather or the original paper mache technique.
• Traditionally, they were made with pastel colors and white based face.
