Venice International University (VIU) is aninternational higher education and research center on the island of San Servolo, just a few minutes awayfrom St. Mark’s square, the heart of the city of Venice.VIU was founded in 1995, as a joint venture betweenthe two Venetian Universities (Ca’ Foscari and Iuav),the Province of Venice, LMU from Munich, UAB fromBarcelona, Duke University (Durham, USA) and theFoundation of Venice.Since then, VIU has grown to include, along with the founding members, a total of ten renownedinternational Universities and important ItalianInstitutions.

The mission of VIU is to offer advanced training and research in an international context, by promotingthe exchange of ideas and knowledge. Each year VIUwelcomes professors, researchers and about twohundred students of different nationalities who livetogether, study and carry out research on its campus.Moreover, VIU brings to the city of Venice and itsmainland a prolific range of academic and scientificactivities focussed mainly on innovation andenvironment.

Venice International University (VIU) è un centrointernazionale di formazione avanzata e di ricercanell’isola di San Servolo, a pochi minuti da piazza San Marco, il cuore della città di Venezia.VIU nasce nel 1995 su iniziativa dei due ateneiveneziani (Ca’ Foscari e Iuav), della Provincia di Venezia,della LMU di Monaco di Baviera, della UAB diBarcellona, della Duke University (Durham, USA) e della Fondazione di Venezia.

Nel corso degli anni la VIU è cresciuta fino a riunire,oggi, oltre ai soci fondatori, dieci prestigiose Universitàinternazionali e importanti istituzioni nazionali.

Missione della VIU è fornire percorsi di formazioneavanzata e di ricerca in un contesto internazionale,favorendo lo scambio di idee e conoscenze. The School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) is an innovative and challenging opportunity forstudents of the Member Universities. The School offers and promotes an interdisciplinaryand multicultural program in Humanities and SocialSciences.University courses, intensive seminars, extra-curricularand co-curricular activities and summer schools areoffered during the two academic semesters (Fall andSpring) that are held regularly every year. Moreover,the School offers courses on Venetian Art andArchitecture, History of Ancient and Modern Venice,Italian Contemporary History and Italian languageand culture.All courses are offered in English by professors from the Member Universities and they are open to all students in the Member Universities.

In 2009 the School of Humanities and Social Sciences opened its 23rdAcademic Semester and launched the new Globalization Program. The program is composed of:courses – on the themes of globalization and environmentalsustainability;internships – at national and international research centers,universities, institutions and firms, in order to develop a final degreeresearch dissertation;dissertation workshops – to develop the final dissertations based onthe internships and research activities carried out during the program. The Globalization Program aims to contribute effectively towards theinternationalization of the courses on offer at Universities from theVeneto region by giving students the chance to take part in a studyand research experience in an international context. The project aims at establishing a School of Excellence for the beststudents coming from Italian and international Universities and tocreate a think tank on San Servolo focusing on the latest research on the theme of globalization and sustainable development, as well as the challenges for the institutions from the Veneto region and forthe countries represented by Venice International University in today’seconomic scenario.The program is supported by the Department of Economics andManagement and by the Department of East Asian Studies of Ca’ Foscari University.The program aims at training new professionals, in charge of liaisingwith the Chinese market, in order to facilitate companies andinstitutions that wish to have a competitive role in the newinternational economic scenario.

Forty scholarships will be granted by the Italian Ministry forEnvironment, Land and Sea in order to cover the participation andmobility costs for students taking part in the internship activitiesabroad.

During the 2009 fall semester some VIU students were selected forinternational internships to carry out research for their finaldissertations. The students spent a period of time at research centersof VIU member universities or institutions with which VIU has signedMemoranda of Understanding, such as: Tsinghua University, Tongji University, The Italian Chamber of Commerce in China, the General Commission of the Italian Government for the ShanghaiExpo 2010, Copenhagen Business School and Duke University.

Nel 2009 la School of Humanities and Social Sciences ha inaugurato il suo 23° semestre accademico con il lancio del nuovo GlobalizationProgram. Il programma si articola in:corsi – sui temi della globalizzazione e della sostenibilità ambientale;stages – presso centri di ricerca, università, istituzioni e impresenazionali ed internazionali per lo sviluppo della tesi magistrale;laboratori di tesi – per valorizzare le esperienze di stage all’esteronell’elaborazione della tesi di laurea.

Il Globalization Program intende contribuire in modo effettivoall’internazionalizzazione dell’offerta didattica delle Università delVeneto, dando agli studenti la possibilità di accedere ad un’esperienzadi studio e ricerca in un contesto internazionale.Il progetto mira a creare un Collegio Superiore per i migliori studentidelle università italiane e internazionali e a rendere San Servolo la sededi una riflessione originale sulle tematiche della globalizzazione edello sviluppo sostenibile, nonché sulle sfide e le opportunità che sipresentano all’economia e alle istituzioni del territorio e dei paesi dicui la VIU è espressione.Il programma gode del patrocinio del Dipartimento di Economia eDirezione Aziendale e del Dipartimento di Studi sull’Asia Orientale di Ca’ Foscari.

Obiettivo del programma è quello di formare nuove figureprofessionali capaci di dialogare in particolar modo con il mondocinese, conducendo trattative in modo efficace per consentire alleimprese e alle istituzioni di proporsi in termini competitivi nel nuovoscenario economico internazionale.

Sono previste quaranta borse di studio finanziate dal Ministerodell’Ambiente e della Tutela del Territorio e del Mare per la coperturadei costi di partecipazione al programma e delle spese di mobilità pergli stages internazionali. Durante il semestre autunnale 2009 alcuni studenti della VIU sonostati impegnati in tirocini all’estero per completare le loro tesi dilaurea. Gli studenti hanno trascorso un periodo di studio presso centridi ricerca di Università associate alla VIU o presso istituzioni con cui la VIU ha accordi di collaborazione, quali: Tsinghua University, Tongji University, la Camera di Commercio Italiana in Cina, il Commissariato generale del Governo per Shanghai Expo 2010,Copenhagen Business School,e la Duke University.

Theater workshopCiao: East of EastIn cooperation with the Venice Biennale TheaterAbout twelve students from different nationalities and origins tookpart in the intercultural theater workshop directed by CorradoVeneziano, which took place on VIU campus within the “Mediterraneo,International Theater Workshop” by the Venice Biennale.The week-long workshop offered the participants the opportunity to try out the rudiments of theatrical art, such as acting, intonation,reading, improvisation, and at the same time it offered theopportunity to focus on the culture of the territories of formerYugoslavia. The project aimed at encouraging students to test themselves, to faceeach other, to reason and find out cultural differences and prejudicesby promoting an intelligent, creative and at the same time ludicdialogue not only with the Balkan culture, which was the main motifof the workshop, but also with the different cultures of eachparticipant.The students shot a “making of” video during the workshop whichwas shown to the public at the end of semester ceremony.

Exhibition: VIU Students’ works of artAn art exhibition took place after the conclusion of the coursesVenezia across its Image and The Relationship between photographyand Painting taught by professor Gemma Parìs Romia from theUniversitat Autònoma de Barcelona.The setting up of the exhibition was entirely organized by the students who presented to the public the photographs,drawings, paintings, sculptures and glass blown works they createdwhile attending the courses.

VIU on VeniceThis is the title of the column curated by VIU students in the monthlymagazine Venews in the April, May and June 2009 issues. Laboratorio di TeatroCiao: a Est dell’EstIn collaborazione con La Biennale TeatroIl laboratorio di teatro e intercultura diretto da Corrado Venezianonell’ambito di Mediterraneo, Laboratorio internazionale del teatro acura de La Biennale di Venezia e tenutosi presso il campus della VIU, ha visto coinvolti una dozzina di studenti di diverse nazionalità eprovenienza. Il workshop, della durata di una settimana, ha dato modo aipartecipanti di cimentarsi con i rudimenti dell’arte teatrale, ovverolezioni di recitazione, voce, dizione, improvvisazione e, allo stessotempo, con approfondimenti culturali incentrati sui territori della exJugoslavia. Obiettivo del progetto è stato quello di incoraggiare glistudenti a mettersi in gioco, confrontarsi, ragionare e scoprire ledifferenze culturali e i pregiudizi, sviluppando un dialogo in modointelligente, creativo e ludico non solo con la cultura balcanica, motivoconduttore del workshop, ma anche con le culture dei partecipanti. Un video, prodotto dagli studenti, ha documentato l’esperienza ed èstato proiettato al pubblico nel corso della cerimonia di fine semestre.

Industrial districts, technologies and networksMaria Chiarvesio, Head of UnitA core TeDIS research area is the study of Industrial Districts and SMEsin the local manufacturing contexts and in particular of the evolutionof their approach towards Network Technologies, internationalizationprocesses and Design. The TeDIS Survey was launched in 1998 to focuson the themes of competitiveness and innovation in the ItalianIndustrial Districts, monitoring more than 43 clusters all around thecountry.Another area of research carried out at TeDIS focuses on the theme of Innovation in public institutions, in particular concerning e-government and e-democracy.Since 2007 TeDIS collaborates with the Veneto Region in order to setand implement the “Guidelines for the promotion of the InformationSociety within the Veneto Region”, by focusing in particular on thethemes of intangible infrastructures (broad band), the promotion ofcultural heritage through new technologies and of local e-government.

SMEs, Local Clusters and InternationalizationEleonora Di MariaHead of Unit, Head of UnitThe internationalization process of SME’s is the second relevant TeDISresearch area. Distretti industriali, tecnologie e networkMaria Chiarvesio, responsabileUna delle aree di ricerca principali del TeDIS è lo studio dei distrettiindustriali e delle piccole e medie imprese nei sistemi produttivi localiin particolare sui temi dell’innovazione tecnologica, dell’internazio -nalizzazione e del design. Dal 1999 il Centro TeDIS ha costituito unosservatorio permanente sui temi della competitività edell’innovazione delle aziende distrettuali monitorando su tutto ilterritorio nazionale oltre 43 distretti industriali.Un’altra area di ricerca del Centro TeDIS riguarda il tema dell’Innovazionenella Pubblica Amministrazione in particolare sul fronte del E-governmente del E-democracy. Dal 2007 TeDIS ha una collaborazione scientifica con laRegione del Veneto per la redazione ed attuazione delle “Linee Guida perlo sviluppo della Società dell’Informazione nella Regione del Veneto” conuna particolare focalizzazione sui temi delle infrastrutture immateriali(banda larga), della Valorizzazione del Patrimonio Culturale attraverso lenuove tecnologie e lo sviluppo del e-government locale.

Piccole e medie imprese, “cluster” locali e InternazionalizzazioneEleonora Di Maria, responsabileIl processo d’internazionalizzazione delle piccole e medie imprese è laseconda area di ricerca rilevante del centro TeDIS. Obiettivo della ricercaè descrivere e analizzare le tendenze all’internazionalizzazione dellepiccole e medie imprese italiane nell’ambito dell’economia globale.La tematica dell’internazionalizzazione viene inoltre approfonditaanche riguardo alla pubblica amministrazione e alle sue politiche perl’internazionalizzazione. Il centro TeDIS (Centro per lo studio sulle tecnologie nei sistemi ad intelligenza distribuita) centro di ricercainterno della VIU, costituito nel 1999, sviluppa ricerca nel campo dell’innovazione e della competitività delleaziende e delle piccole e medie imprese nei distrettiindustriali, sotto la supervisione di un comitatointernazionale di gestione. Il TeDIS promuove attività diricerca in collaborazione con istituzioni e aziende private epubbliche. Il TeDIS, inoltre, ha sviluppato un programma diricerca sui distretti industriali, sulla globalizzazione, e sullecatene del valore in collaborazione con il centro sullaGlobalizzazione, Governance e Competitività della Duke University, diretto dal professor Gary Gereffi.

TeDIS (Center for Studies on Technologies inDistributed Intelligence Systems) is a research centerestablished within VIU in 1999. TeDIS carries outresearch on innovation and competitiveness ofcompanies and SMEs in the industrial districts, underthe supervision of an international managementcommittee. TeDIS promotes research in cooperationwith private and public institutions and companies.TeDIS has also developed a joint research program on industrial districts, globalization, and global valuechains in cooperation with Duke University Center on Globalization, Governance and Competitivenessdirected by Professor Gary Gereffi.

was published in 2008 as a result of a three-year researchcollaboration with Formez, in Rome; Formez is a training and researchcenter of the Ministry for the Civil Service.

Creativity, Design and InnovationMarco Bettiol, Head of UnitThis new research area has been promoted since 2003. Creativity is akey element in order to sustain companies’ competitiveness in theglobal economy. New trends are reshaping competition on the basis ofa stronger need for innovative products. Creativity and design are thenew drivers for innovative products and services. Creativity, design andinnovation are analyzed in order to point out the key factors that cansustain and foster the competitiveness of companies and howcompanies use and invest in design and creativity in order to produceinnovative products.In 2008 a research project on environmental sustainability (E logico)within the household furniture was carried out, focusing on small andmedium enterprises and on Italian industrial districts. Ten case studieswere analyzed: small and medium enterprises that have successfullylaunched initiatives which are examples of environmentalsustainability at a national and international level. In particular, thecompanies’ “green” strategies were highlighted as examples that canbe repeated by those enterprises promoting the “Made in Italy”trademark.

Transport, Logistics and Supply Chain ManagementMarco Mazzarino, Head of UnitLogistics is another growing area of research, focusing on supply chainmanagement in local contexts (industrial districts) and in the globaleconomy. TeDIS center has established a dedicated unit on “Transport,Logistics and Supply Chain Management” in order to identifyinnovative tools and solutions to improve supply chaincompetitiveness and logistics systems performances.Since 2008 two research projects are on going:_ the Euridice Project, co-financed by the EU within the VII FrameworkProgram. This project aims to create the necessary concepts,technological solutions and business models to set up the mostadvanced information services for freight transportation in Europe.The project leader is Insiel - Informatica per il Sistema degli Enti LocaliSpa. VIU is one of the twenty-two project partners involved._ TRIM, “Transport, Infrastructures and Monitoring”, financed by the“Interreg – IV A, Italy – Austria Program”; the project aims atimproving the information infrastructures related to traffic for thelong – term street programming and management in this area and atimproving the existing street maps with regards to the quality, thestructure and the quantity of the information provided.

Creatività, design einnovazione vengono analizzati al fine di evidenziare i fattori principaliper il sostegno e l’incremento della competitività delle aziende e percapire come le aziende usino ed investano in design e creatività peravere prodotti innovativi.Nel 2008 è stato condotto un progetto di sostenibilità ambientale (E logico) nel settore della casa arredo con particolare riferimento allepiccole e medie imprese e ai distretti industriali italiani. Si sonoanalizzati dieci casi di studio di piccole e medie imprese che hannoavviato con successo iniziative legate alla sostenibilità ambientale alivello nazionale ed internazionale. In particolar modo, sono stateevidenziate le strategie “green” delle aziende e la loro replicabilità perle imprese del Made in Italy.

Trasporti, Logistica e Gestione delle catene del valoreMarco Mazzarino, responsabileLa logistica costituisce un’altra area di ricerca in crescita, focalizzatasulla gestione delle catene del valore in contesti locali (i distrettiindustriali) e nell’economia globale. Il centro TeDIS ha istituito unaunità dedicata al tema dei “Trasporti, Logistica e gestione delle catenedel valore” con l’obiettivo di identificare strumenti e soluzioniinnovative per migliorare la competitività delle catene del valore e irisultati dei sistemi logistici.Dal 2008 sono in corso due progetti triennali: _ “Euridice”, con il cofinanziamento dell’Unione Europea, nell’ambitodel VII programma quadro. Il progetto mira alla creazione dei concetti edelle soluzioni tecnologiche, oltre ai modelli commerciali necessari peravviare servizi informativi quanto più avanzati per il trasporto dellemerci in Europa. Il capo progetto è “Insiel-Informatica per il Sistemadegli Enti Locali Spa. La VIU è uno dei ventidue partner di progetto. _ TRIM, “Trasporto Infrastrutture e Monitoraggio”, finanziato dalProgramma “Interreg IV A, Italia-Austria”, che mira al miglioramentodell’infrastruttura informativa relativa al traffico per laprogrammazione e la gestione stradale a lungo termine nell’area diriferimento e al perfezionamento dei grafici stradali esistenti perquanto riguarda profondità, struttura e qualità informativa.

The Center for Thematic Environmental Networks (TEN) is a trainingand research center in the field of environment and sustainabledevelopment. TEN develops training activities on the key areas ofsustainable development and provides an international meetingplatform for competent authorities and researchers who are involvedin environmental management and sustainable development issues.TEN also promotes research on Globalization and Environment,Comparative Sustainable Development Diagnostics, ComparativeEnvironmental Policies with an emphasis on Europe and China, therole of firms and global value chains in sustainable development. In 2003, the Italian Ministry of Environment, Land and Sea selectedTEN Center as the scientific partner for its Capacity Building activitywithin the Sino-Italian Cooperation Program for EnvironmentalProtection as well as for the Course on Sustainability for EastEuropean countries, Central Asia and the Black Sea Region.

The Sino-Italian Advanced Training Program on Environmental Management and SustainableDevelopmentThe aim of the Sino-Italian Advanced Training Program is to promotesustainable development among Chinese decision-makers. Knowledgetransfer and promotion of the best technologies and practices are atthe basis of the Program. In 2009, the National Development andReform Commission (NDRC) joined the 6 Chinese institutions alreadyparticipating in the Program: Chinese Academy of Social Sciences(CASS), Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), ChineseMinistry of Environmental Protection (MEP), Beijing MunicipalEnvironmental Protection Bureau (BMEPB), Shanghai MunicipalEnvironmental Protection Bureau (SEPB), Tianjin Municipal Science andTechnology Commission (TSTC).The Program is organized as a set of two-weeks modules withlecturing sessions and site visits in Rome, Siena and Turin, at the sitesof the Italian Ministry for the Environment, the University of Siena,Agroinnova Center of Competence of the University of Turin, allpartners in the Program.The main topics addressed in the different sessions of the Programare: Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Water and WasteManagement, Air Pollution, Sustainable Urban Development and Eco-Building, Sustainable Industrial Development, Climate Change, NaturalResources Management, Environmental Policy, MultilateralEnvironmental Agreements. In 2009, the VIU arranged 29 training sessions, 5 of which in China,involving 1336 Chinese participants. 5458 is the total number ofChinese participants involved in the Advanced Training Program so far.

Programma di Formazione Avanzata con la RepubblicaPopolare Cinese su Gestione Ambientale e SviluppoSostenibileScopo del Programma di Formazione è la promozione dello svilupposostenibile tra i rappresentanti del Governo e di istituzioni cinesicoinvolti nei processi decisionali in Cina. Il trasferimento di conoscenze,la promozione delle tecnologie e la presentazione di casi studio sonoalla base del Programma. I principali temi affrontati nelle diverse sessioni del Programma sono:efficienza energetica ed energia rinnovabile, gestione delle risorseidriche e dei rifiuti, inquinamento dell’aria, sviluppo urbano earchitettura sostenibile, sviluppo industriale sostenibile, cambiamenticlimatici, gestione delle risorse naturali, politiche ambientali e accordiinternazionali. Nel 2009 sono state organizzate 29 sessioni, di cui 5 in Cina, e sonostati coinvolti 1336 partecipanti cinesi, portando così a 5458 il numerototale di partecipanti cinesi coinvolti dall’inizio del Programma.

The Course on Sustainability for East Europeancountries and the Black Sea AreaThe Course on Sustainability for East European countries and the BlackSea area is an advanced course addressed to decision makers from thegovernments of the countries involved in the different Course editions. In 2009, two editions of the Course were arranged namely the “BlackSea Seminars on Partnerships for Sustainability” with representativesfrom Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, the Russian Federation, Turkey andthe Ukraine, and “The Course on Local Sustainability and Action” withrepresentatives from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia,Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Czech Republic, Hungary,Poland and Slovakia. The Black Sea Course focused on Climate Change and WaterManagement with an introductory session on SustainableDevelopment at the Bilgi University in Istanbul and an implementingsession at the VIU in Venice. The Course on Local Sustainabilityfocused on the principles of Sustainable Development at local levelwith an implementing session at the REC new zero emissionconference center in Budapest.

The Sino-Italian Distance Learning Program The Distance Learning Program is a one-week introductory course on“Environmental Management and Sustainable Development”launched in 2007 to increase the number of beneficiaries in theAdvanced Training Program. Lecturers broadcast from Italy and Beijingto simultaneously reach classrooms in different regions of China. In2009, the Program addressed 377 participants in 8 cities: Beijing,Changsha, Hohhot, Lingzhi, Sanya, Taiyuan, Urumqi, Xining.

The Sino-Italian Environmental Training CommunityNewsletter & WebA quarterly Chinese-English newsletter is published on paper and on-line to consolidate the network of different participants, lecturers,policy-makers, experts and entrepreneurs of the Advanced TrainingProgram with China. 2009 newsletter issues focus on Desertification,Environmental Emergencies and Contaminated Sites. Italy and China: the Challenge for Sustainable DevelopmentThe Environmental Management and Sustainable Development:Experiences and Case Studies book (Springer, 2008) was presented on July 16 in Venice on the occasion of the IPCC meeting. RajendaPachauri, Sun Chengyong, William Clark discussed about the challengefor Sustainable Development in China with the editors Corrado Clini,Ignazio Musu and Maria Ludovica Gullino. Ambassador UmbertoVattani as VIU President opened the event and guided the discussion.

Corso sulla Sostenibilità per i paesi dell’Europa dell’Este della regione del Mar NeroIl Corso sulla Sostenibilità per i paesi dell’Europa dell’Est e per laregione del Mar Nero è un corso di formazione avanzata rivolto airappresentanti dei governi dei paesi che partecipano ai corsi, coinvoltinei processi decisionali dei loro paesi. Nel 2009 sono state organizzate due edizioni del Corso: il Black SeaSeminars on Partnerships for Sustainability con rappresentanti diBulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Federazione Russa, Turchia e Ucraina, e ilCourse on Local Sustainability and Action con rappresentanti di Albania,Bosnia ed Erzegovina, Croazia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia,Repubblica Ceca, Ungheria, Polonia e Slovacchia. Il Corso per la regione del Black Sea analizza il tema dei cambiamenticlimatici e della gestione delle acque, e comprende una sessioneintroduttiva sui principi dello sviluppo sostenibile all’Università Bilgi diIstanbul e una sessione dedicata all’analisi di casi di studio a VIU aVenezia. Il Corso dedicato alla sostenibilità a livello locale analizza iprincipi dello sviluppo sostenibile su scala urbana e comprende una visitadi studio al nuovo centro conferenze a emissioni zero del REC a Istanbul.

The TEN Center at the CIEPEC and WATEC 2009 The TEN Center was invited to attend the 11th Chinese InternationalEnvironmental Protection Exhibition and Conference (CIEPEC) held inBeijing on June 3-6 to present the Advanced Training Program as asuccessful example of Capacity Building activity for the promotion ofSustainable Development. Advanced Seminar in the Humanities (2008–2009):Literature and Culture in the Ancient Mediterranean:Greece, Rome, and the Near EastIn September 2009 the third edition of the advanced seminar on“Literature and Culture in the Ancient Mediterranean: Greece, Romeand the Near East” took place at VIU. The biennial advanced seminarwas sponsored by the Fondazione di Venezia. The aim of the programwas firstly to investigate the relationship between themes, motifs andstructures of the texts, starting with the early examples of epic poetryand of wisdom and didactic literature; secondly, to examine theprocesses involved in their transmission and preservation in both oraland written forms.During the September session of the seminar a number of lectureswas given by invited speakers and scholars active in the field of Greek,Latin and Ancient Near Eastern literature; the fellows presented theirresearch papers that they had carried out under the supervision of afaculty member of the seminar during the past year.After the closing of the seminar, Dr. Daniel Kiss, Research Fellow at theDepartment of Greek and Latin Philology of LMU commented: “[…] asfar as I know, the Advanced Seminar in the Humanities is unique in itssort – there are no other international seminars at this level on Latin,Greek or Ancient Mesopotamian Literature. It offers a valuableopportunity for young scholars from all over the world to exchangeand to develop their ideas […] I expect that in a couple of decadesmost of my colleagues will have become famous scholars in their ownright. ICE (Italian Institute for Foreign Trade)The fifth edition of the graduate course in BusinessInternationalization Processes with knowledge of Oriental Languagestook place from April to October 2009. Twenty graduate studentsattended the program which was organized in cooperation with ICE –Italian Institute for Foreign Trade and in collaboration with theOriental Institute of Naples. After the training period the studentswere involved until December 2009 in a on-the-job experience indifferent companies first in Italy and then abroad. The aim of theprogram is to develop the necessary competences to sustain theinternational development of Italian companies on Eastern European,Middle Eastern and Far Eastern markets.The course represents the continuation of a fruitful collaboration andexperience: 85% of the graduates of the past editions of this coursehave rapidly found employment in important companies in Italy andabroad.VIU and ICE are jointly developing research activities focusing onLogistics, Art and Design as a leverage for Made in Italy products.

Advanced Seminar in the Humanities (2008–2009):Literature and Culture in the Ancient Mediterranean:Greece, Rome, and the Near EastLa terza edizione del seminario post lauream dal titolo Literature andCulture in the Ancient Mediterranean: Greece, Rome and the Near East siè conclusa a settembre 2009. Il seminario biennale è stato organizzatocon il sostegno della Fondazione di Venezia con l’obiettivo diinvestigare il rapporto tra i temi, i motivi e le strutture dei testi, apartire dai primi esempi della poesia epica e della letteraturasapienziale e didattica; in secondo luogo si è voluto esaminare iprocessi di trasmissione dei testi e la loro conservazione nelle formescritta e orale.Nella sessione di settembre si sono inoltre tenute una serie diconferenze di relatori, specialisti attivi nel campo della letteraturagreca, latina e dell’antico vicino oriente, e la presentazione dei progettidi ricerca che i partecipanti hanno sviluppato sotto la supervisione deidocenti del seminario nel corso dell’anno.Al termine del seminario, Daniel Kiss, ricercatore presso il Dipartimentodi Filologia greca e latina della LMU, ha commentato: «[…] non esistonoaltri seminari sulla Letteratura Latina, Greca o Mesopotamica dellostesso livello. ICE (Istituto nazionale per il Commercio Estero)La quinta edizione del corso post laurea Esperto diinternazionalizzazione d’impresa con conoscenza di Lingue Orientali si ètenuta da aprile ad ottobre 2009. Venti laureati hanno frequentato ilprogramma che è stato organizzato in collaborazione con l’ICE –Istituto nazionale per il Commercio Estero e con il concorsodell’Istituto orientale di Napoli. Dopo la fase d’aula, gli studenti hannosvolto fino a dicembre 2009 un periodo di stage in diverse aziendeprima in Italia e poi all’estero. Obiettivo del corso è sviluppare lecompetenze necessarie per sostenere lo sviluppo internazionale delleimprese italiane nei mercati dell’Europa Orientale, del Medio Oriente edell’Estremo Oriente.Si tratta del proseguimento di una proficua collaborazione edesperienza che ha visto l’85% dei diplomati delle passate edizioni delcorso trovare rapidamente lavoro in importanti aziende in Italia eall’estero.La VIU e l’ICE sono impegnati in attività di ricerca congiunte nel campodella logistica, dell’arte e del design quale leva su cui puntare per iprodotti del Made in Italy.

CESifo Venice Summer InstituteThe CESifo Venice Summer Institute, held now for ten years at VIU, hasbecome one of CESifo’s most coveted conference series. Organised inco-operation with Venice International University, of which theUniversity of Munich is a founding member, it attracts every yeararound a hundred seasoned and promising young internationaleconomists to discuss themes of current interest in Europeaneconomic policy. The range and quality of the infrastructure andservices offered by Venice International University and San Servolohave been instrumental in turning this conference series into one ofCESifo’s most successful events. The CESifo Venice Summer Institutehas organised close to 50 workshops at VIU, and has played host toover 1,000 scholars in its 10 year history. VIU is pleased to have offered its support to CESifo over these tenyears of collaboration and to have contributed to make this a trulyunique event within Cesifo’s calendar of activities.

European Summer School in Resource andEnvironmental Economics Since 2000 the European Association of Environmental and ResourceEconomists (EAERE), the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM), and theVenice International University have been successfully running theirEuropean Summer School in Resource and Environmental Economics.The broader objective of these schools of events is to provideadvanced training for young researchers from all over Europe andbeyond on European issues of environmental and resource economics. The theme of this year’s Summer School was Economics, Transport andEnvironment.Transport is considered one of the main sources of externalities.Important externalities are air pollution, noise, congestion, wear andtear, but also accident, schedule delay costs imposed upon others. Itwas proposed to focus the Summer School not only on environmentalproblems in a very narrow sense but also to study the interrelationwith the other types of externalities. Transport externalities need asomewhat different analysis from most other externalities in thesense that the level of the externalities feeds back into the level of theactivity: increased congestion and accident levels decreaseparticipation in transport activities.

Italian Association of Council of EuropeanMunicipalities and Regions (AICCRE) AICCRE (Association of Council of European Municipalities andRegions) is the only center in Italy that offers training on how to planand manage EU funded projects. In 2008 AICCRE and VIU have jointly carried out several courses andseminars on thematic issues, created new didactic tools and it hasissued an innovative Operational Handbook on Project planning,distributed through out Italy. The participants in the courses offeredby AICCRE come mostly from public offices, training institutions, non-profit institutions, Universities and research centers.

Lavarietà e la qualità delle strutture e dei servizi offerti dalla VeniceInternational University e da San Servolo si sono rivelati fondamentalinel rendere queste conferenze uno degli eventi di maggior successodel CESifo che in questi dieci anni di attività ha organizzato quasi unacinquantina di seminari alla VIU, ospitando più di mille studiosi.La VIU è lieta di aver offerto il proprio supporto al CESifo in unacollaborazione ormai decennale e di aver contribuito a far sì che ilSummer Institute sia divenuto un’iniziativa davvero straordinariaall’interno del calendario delle attività promosse dal CESifo.

L’obiettivo più ampio di queste scuole è difornire una formazione avanzata a giovani ricercatori europei e nonsolo, su questioni europee legate all’economia dell’ambiente e dellerisorse.L’argomento specifico della scuola di quest’anno è stato Economia,Trasporti ed Ambiente.I trasporti sono considerati fonte principale di esternalità. Alcuneesternalità importanti sono l’inquinamento dell’aria, l’inquinamentoacustico, il traffico, il logorio ma anche gli incidenti e i costi dovuti airitardi verso terzi. È stato proposto di incentrare la Scuola non solo suiproblemi ambientali in senso stretto ma anche sullo studio dellainterrelazione tra i diversi tipi di esternalità. Le esternalità dei trasportirichiedono una analisi diversa da quella applicata nel caso dellamaggior parte delle esternalità, poiché il loro livello rinvia al livello diattività: una maggior congestione e un più alto tasso incidenti fannodiminuire la partecipazione alle attività dei trasporti.

Il Centro di Formazione AICCRE Il Centro di Formazione in Europrogettazione dell’AICCRE (Associazioneitaliana del Consiglio dei Comuni e delle Regioni d’Europa) è l’unicocentro in Italia specificamente dedicato alla formazione diprofessionisti nella gestione dei progetti europei e nel supporto allapartecipazione ai programmi comunitari. Nel 2008 AICCRE, incollaborazione con la VIU, ha organizzato un articolato programma dicorsi e seminari tematici, realizzato nuovi strumenti didattici eprodotto un innovativo Manuale Operativo di Progettazione distribuitoin tutta Italia. I partecipanti alle attività formative di AICCREprovengono per lo più da enti pubblici, enti di formazione,organizzazioni no profit, aziende, università e centri di ricerca.42

Center for NanoScience (CeNS)The Center for NanoScience (CeNS) was founded in 1998 at theLudwig-Maximilians-University in Munich, one of the foundingmembers of Venice International University. The mission of CeNS is topromote, coordinate, and bundle interdisciplinary research in the fieldof nanoscience in the Munich area. Every year CeNS organizes aworkshop in cooperation with VIU. This year’s workshop wasNANOMAN – 10 Years in a Nutshell, Summarizing Workshop of the SFB486. With the support of the Center for NanoScience (CeNS), theCollaborative Research Centre (SFB) “NANOMAN – Manipulation ofMatter on the Nanometer Length Scale” celebrated its successful workof the past 10 years at VIU in September 2009. In the framework ofthis summarizing workshop, the principal investigators of the SFB486presented their most important results from their collaborative workto the reviewers of the German Research Foundation (DFG) whichfunded the center from 1999 to 2009. In addition to the talks, PhDstudents of the different projects explained recent research highlightsat the lively poster sessions which took place in the evenings. At thismeeting, the researchers of the SFB could proudly look back onto tenexciting years – but were also looking forward to several newCollaborative Research Centres which will be established in the nearfuture.

European Patent Office (EPO)In the last recent years EPO and VIU launched a cooperation projectwith the aim to contribute to the promotion in the field of patent-related Intellectual Property education and training in Europe andspecifically in Italy.In 2009 VIU and EPO co-organized the third edition of the EuropeanJudges Forum.The European Judges’ Forum is jointly organised by the EPO and theEuropean Patent Lawyers Association (EPLAW) and it is an interactiveexchange at the highest level between the most experienced patentjudges and practitioners in Europe. Topics on substantive andprocedural patent law are discussed, and a mock trial is organised. Thejudges come from over twenty countries and have been instrumentalin the continuing initiative by the European Commission to create aEuropean Patent Court.

Centro CeNSIl centro per le Nano-scienze (CeNS) è stato fondato nel 1998 presso laLudwig Maximilians University di Monaco, uno dei soci fondatori dellaVIU. La missione del CeNS è la promozione, il coordinamento dellaricerca interdisciplinare nel campo della nanoscienza nell’area diMonaco. Ogni anno il CeNS organizza un seminario in collaborazionecon la VIU. Il seminario di quest’anno dal titolo era “NANOMAN – 10Years in a Nutshell, Summarizing Workshop of the SFB 486.Con il supporto del CeNS il centro “SFB 486” ha celebrato alla VIU asettembre 2009 gli obiettivi raggiunti nel corso degli ultimi dieci anni.Nell’ambito di questo seminario di ricapitolazione, i principaliricercatori del Centro hanno presentato i risultati più importanti deiloro lavori di ricerca ai revisori della Fondazione di Ricerca Tedesca(DFG) che ha sponsorizzato il centro dal 1999 al 2009. Oltre allepresentazioni gli studenti di dottorato coinvolti in diversi programmihanno illustrato i punti più salienti della loro ricerca nel corso dellevivaci presentazioni poster che si sono tenute in orario serale duranteil seminario. È stata questa l’occasione per i ricercatori del SFB diriflettere con soddisfazione sui dieci anni di attività svolte e allo stessotempo di prepararsi ai diversi nuovi Centri di Ricerca che nascerannonel prossimo futuro

Ufficio Europeo dei BrevettiNegli scorsi anni l’Ufficio Europeo dei brevetti e la VIU hanno avviatoun progetto di cooperazione con l’obiettivo di promuovere l’istruzionee la formazione in Europa e specificatamente in Italia nel campo dellaproprietà intellettuale dei brevetti. Nel 2009 VIU e l’EPO hanno organizzato la terza edizione delloEuropean Judges Forum che è iniziativa congiunta dell’EPO edell’EPLAW (Associazione Europea dei Giudici dei Brevetti). Si tratta diun momento di incontro interattivo ad altissimo livello tra giudici eprofessionisti con maggior esperienza in Europa. Vengono discussiargomenti sostanziali e procedurali che riguardano la legislatura deibrevetti con lo svolgimento di un processo simulato. I giudiciprovengono da più di venti paesi diversi e il loro contributo si èdimostrato di valido aiuto per le iniziative promosse dallaCommissione europea col fine di istituire una Corte Europea deiBrevetti.

International Summer Research WorkshopThe second International Summer Research Workshop organized incollaboration with Duke University’s Center on Globalization,Governance & Competitiveness (CGGC) took place in Durham (NorthCarolina, USA, from July 5 to July 10, 2009. This workshop was thesecond one of a series of four workshops that will be held annuallyover the next four years, alternately in Venice (in 2008 and 2010) andin Durham, NC (in 2009 and 2011). The workshops will enhance theexpertise on the themes of global value chains and competitivenessachieved in the last years by the CGGC and on the empirical researchof Italian industrial districts carried out by TeDIS Center. More thantwenty-five participants, including international faculty, guestspeakers and twenty young researchers coming from differentEuropean, African and Far East countries and the USA attended theworkshop in Durham.The workshops will highlight the key theories on global value chains,industrial districts, and local clusters, and will take into considerationthe participants’ ongoing research as well as new research projects. The main theme of the 2009 year workshop was “Economic, Socialand Environmental Restructuring in Global Value Chains”. Thestructure of the workshop was based on the project “Capturing theGains: Economic and Social Upgrading in Global Production Networksand Trade,” promoted by the CGGC together with the InternationalLabour Office (ILO) that was recently financed by the BritishDepartment for International Development.

International Summer Research WorkshopIl secondo International Summer Research Workshop, organizzato incollaborazione con il Centro sulla Globalizzazione, la Governance e laCompetitività (CGGC) della Duke University, si è tenuto a Durham(North Carolina, USA) dal 5 al 10 luglio 2009. Questo seminario è ilsecondo di una serie di quattro incontri che si terranno annualmente,rispettivamente ed alternativamente a Venezia (edizioni 2008 e 2010)e a Durham (edizioni 2009, 2011), nello stato della Carolina del Nord,negli Stati Uniti. I seminari valorizzano le pluriennali esperienzematurate dal Centro CGGC, sui temi delle catene del valore globale edella competitività, e dal centro TeDIS, sulla ricerca dei distrettiindustriali italiani. Hanno seguito il seminario a Durham oltreventicinque partecipanti, ovvero docenti internazionali, relatori e ventigiovani ricercatori di diversi paesi europei, americani, africani edell’estremo oriente. I seminari illustrano le principali teorie sulle catene del valore globale, idistretti industriali, i clusters locali e prenderanno in considerazione leattività di ricerca in corso dei partecipanti così come nuovi progetti.Il tema principale del seminario che si è tenuto nel 2009 è stato“Economic, Social and Environmental Restructuring in Global ValueChains”. A Gift To Marco Polo: Contemporary Art from China On the occasion of the 53rd Biennale di VeneziaInternational Art Exhibition, VIU, in cooperation withInstitutions of Chinart and the Museum ofContemporary Art in Shanghai (MoCA) organized theexhibition “A Gift to Marco Polo: Contemporary Artfrom China”. The exhibition presented the works of artby nine prominent Chinese contemporary artists:Zhang Xiaogang, Zhou Chunya, He Duoling, Wang Guangyi, Fang Lijun, Yue Minjun, Zhang Peili, Wu Shanzhuan and Ye Fang. As a tribute to MarcoPolo, the artists combined elements from the East and West in their interpretations of Italian art,European culture and western civilization. The exhibition was curated by Lu Peng and AchilleBonito Oliva. The catalogue of the exhibition waspublished by Marsilio Editori and is available in threelanguages (Italian, English and Chinese).The artists were present at the opening ceremony thattook place at VIU on June 2, 2009.

A Gift to Marco Polo: Arte contemporanea dalla CinaIn occasione della 53° Espozione Internazionale d’Artede La Biennale di Venezia la VIU, in collaborazione conInstitutions of Chinart ed il Museo d’Artecontemporanea di Shanghai (MoCA) ha organizzatouna mostra collettiva dal titolo: “A Gift to Marco Polo:Contemporary Art from China”.La mostra ha presentato i lavori di nove noti artisticinesi contemporanei: Zhang Xiaogang, Zhou Chunya,He Duoling, Wang Guangyi, Fang Lijun, Yue Minjun,Zhang Peili, Wu Shanzhuan and Ye Fang. In omaggio al mito di Marco Polo gli artisti combinano elementiorientali con elementi occidentali reinterpretandol’arte italiana, la cultura europea ed il mondooccidentale.La mostra è stata curata da Lu Peng e da Achille BonitoOliva. Il catalogo, edito da Marsilio, è disponibile in trelingue (italiano, inglese e cinese). La mostra è statainaugurata alla presenza degli artisti il 2 giugno 2009alla VIU.

VIU campusVIU is located on the island of San Servolo, in buildingsthat were once a monastery and that were thenturned into a military hospital and later on into apsychiatric hospital which was disbanded in 1978.The owner of the island, the Province of Venice (a form of local government), decided to found VeniceInternational University together with the twoVenetian Universities and a number of foreignUniversities, on December 15, 1995. The buildingsunderwent a meticulous restoration work and theisland now offers a beautiful setting with views ofVenice and its lagoon, and a luxuriant park with sportgrounds, a cafeteria, a bar and several works of art bydistinguished contemporary international artists.VIU facilities include lecture rooms of various sizes,conference and seminar rooms, offices, a library, pcrooms and broadband wi–fi connection. A public boatservice connects San Servolo to Venice historicalcenter.

Il campus della VIULa VIU si trova nell’isola di San Servolo, un tempomonastero che fu poi trasformato in ospedale militaree quindi in ospedale psichiatrico fino al 1978. La Provincia di Venezia, proprietaria dell’isola, insiemead alcune università straniere, di concerto con le dueUniversità veneziane, fondarono la VeniceInternational University il 15 dicembre 1995. Gli edifici nel corso del tempo hanno subito unaccurato restauro e l’isola offre oggi un campus che si affaccia su Venezia e sulla sua laguna con unampio parco e attrezzature sportive, una mensa, un bar e diverse opere d’arte di noti artistiinternazionali contemporanei.Le strutture della VIU comprendono aule di diversedimensioni, sale conferenze e seminari, uffici, unabiblioteca, sale PC e connessione wi-fi in tutte le aule.Un servizio di navetta pubblico collega San Servolo al centro storico di Venezia.
