Ventive – what is it?

• Ventive is a Passive Heat Recovery Ventilation Unit that mimics nature in both its appearance and operation;

• Ventive allows for continuous ventilation of domestic dwellings without the associated heat loss, running costs and onerous maintenance requirements;

• Ventive makes the most of existing dwelling infrastructure simplifying installation and reducing installation costs;

The problem with leaky houses

•Drafts •Heat Loss •Condensation •Discomfort •Heating Costs

Page 6: Ventive short Presentation

The problem with airtight houses

•Condensation •Mould •Mites •Volatile Organics •Deterioration of Building Fabric

Air movement and Energy Efficiency are finely balanced

Maximum Air infiltration rates

Mechanical Heat Recovery Ventilation (MHRV)

•Difficult to install •High capital costs •High running costs (power always on) •High annual maintenance costs (filters, electrical ~£200pa) •Not practical for retrofit •Marginal CO2 savings

MHRV installation Typical cost

Base unit £1200

Duct Supply £900

Electrician £300

Plumber £250

Installation £1150

Making good £1400

TOTAL £5200

MHRV is unbalanced which increases driving force for infiltration and cools the house

Introducing Ventive™

•Takes one hour to install •No power or plumbing needed •No moving parts •Maintenance free •No visual impact internally or externally •Space saving •Heat recovery on average 85% •Designed for easy retrofit •Average payback period - 5 years

Page 13: Ventive short Presentation

Balanced Ventilation

•Each room remains at atmospheric pressure reducing infiltration through the building fabric •Over 80% of heat is recovered

The Market • DECC has announced plans to retrofit every UK home by 2030. This amounts

to 1,000,000 retrofits per year from 2015;

• Ventive is designed for Retrofitting (replacing costly Mechanical Heat Recovery Systems) & saves time, energy and money in use and installation

• Market size for Ventive is £400M/annum for New Build and £2BN for retrofit starting from 2013

Page 15: Ventive short Presentation

• Ventilation is necessary but Mechanical systems are costly;

• Ventive will reduce pollution. It uses no electricity and will not contribute to emissions of CO2, NOx, SOx and particulate matter associated with power generation;

• Ventive will not increase the load on electricity grid;

• Ventive will reduce waste in both production and installation;

• Ventive is resilient – it will continue working in the event of electricity supply disruption;

The Need

Page 16: Ventive short Presentation

• Modelling, Simulations, wind tunnel and gas tracer tests verify effectiveness of the technology, early 2011;

• Ventive Ltd set up in July 2011;

• Patent and Registered Design Granted in August 2011;

• Verified by Imperial College London as up to 97% efficient, September 2011

• A number of installations completed by October 2011;

• Successful laboratory tests undertaken in November 2011;

• Fully monitored installations to follow in February 2011;

• BBA & BRE certification under way (with SAP appendix Q compliance);

Timeline

Page 17: Ventive short Presentation

How it has already been used

• 2 years of R&D complete

– Computational Fluid Dynamics

– Product Design

– Air flow tests

• Heat exchanger thoroughly tested by Imperial College London

• Installed as complete system in existing terrace house

• Official certification underway at BRE

Page 18: Ventive short Presentation

How it has been tested

Ventive itself, as well as the underlying principles of its operation, were tested to destruction using specially designed and fully monitored test rig mimicking the normal house environment
