ABOUT THE VENUE

Studio 188, formerly the art-deco Old Baptist Church, is Ipswich’s intimate performing arts development and live music venue right in the heart of the CBD . Boasting a flexible space, regular local live music events and arts development workshops, Studio 188 is an inclusive and creative space for everyone .

Studio 188 is available for hire for a range of activities and productions:

� events � functions �meetings �workshops � film screening and recording �music demo recording � boutique theatre performances � live music events

The venue provides a vibrant arts complex that serves as a multi purpose cultural centre for community and cultural activities .

HISTORY

The Studio 188 building has had a long and proud history within the Ipswich community . The former Ipswich Baptist Church was first erected in 1877 and is the oldest surviving church to be designed by Richard Gailey . Rendering and an Art Deco façade – popular with the time period - were applied in 1938 under the direction GB Gill, and a memorial gate was added in 1954 . In 2006, the church was added to the Queensland Heritage Register, and in 2008, the church was sold and now presents as an ideal space for community and cultural development in the region .

A NEW BEGINNING

Studio 188 hosts a variety of ad hoc live music showcases, theatre and community productions that endeavour to profile a range of artistic interpretation for the Ipswich community, as well as providing regular performance development opportunities for local artists .

IPSWICH UNEARTHED

Ipswich Unearthed is a bi-monthly performance and music business development opportunity for young, emerging musicians living in Ipswich .

This unique show is aimed at young performing artists aged 13-25 years, looking to launch their professional performance career or eager to learn more about the industry . The aim of Ipswich Unearthed is to develop young artists’ skills, build their confidence and encourage them to pursue their musical career independently .

The journey starts ahead of the show, where all performing artists are invited to attend a music marketing and technical workshop at Studio 188 to discuss key industry topics, such as:

� what is music business and how can it help you? � how to make music marketing and social media

work for you � how to stand out from the crowd � what is the recipe for an awesome artist bio � promotional material must haves and helpful

online tools to make you look like a pro � what is an Electronic Press Kit (EPK)? � venue tech – what to do before and during

a show � what is an ABN? � how to get paid .

On the night of the performance, our technicians work with each artist during an extended sound check to ensure they understand the various cogs of live music production . Artists are encouraged to perform a mix of covers and originals during their 20 minute set .

LIVE! AT THE BAPTIST

Live! at the Baptist is Ipswich’s connection to the most cutting edge and progressive music scene in South East Queensland . Experience the sublime sounds of this intimate and energetic venue featuring some of the best headline acts alongside up and coming local artists . Live! at the Baptist programming matches emerging local artists with established performers with a view of fostering industry connections, exposure and development, as well as providing an exceptional night out for the Ipswich community .

Since its inception as Live and Loud in 2014, Live! at the Baptist has included a range of notable acts such as Flyying Colours (2013), Sahara Beck (2014), Gang of Youths (2015), Screamfeeder (2015), AYLA (2016), FeelsClub (2020), Jack Botts (2020) and many more .

COMPLIMENTARY SERVICES

Studio 188 is pleased to offer a range of complimentary services to artists for its Live! at the Baptist and Ipswich Unearthed shows .

� Each performance is supplied with a photographer/videographer . Photos are distributed from the photographer within one week of the performance .

� Studio 188 is equipped to record your live performance . Artists who wish to have their performances recorded must provide a hard drive or USB (at least 32GB) to the sound technician during sound check . The live stems of the performance will be loaded onto the hard drive, free of charge .

ARTIST TESTIMONIAL

In August 2019, I was given the amazing opportunity to play at Studio 188’s ‘Ipswich Unearthed’ show, which allowed me to experience what it was like to perform in front of people and gave me insight into what it would be like stepping up to the next level in my music career.

A few days later I took part in the Protégé Master Classes Songwriting Program with the I Heart Songwriting Club, where I was introduced to writing my own music. All I can say is that I absolutely fell in love with song writing that day. Over the course of the program I wrote 10 songs in 10 weeks which helped my creativity and understanding of song writing.

Ever since performing at Ipswich Unearthed and participating in the Protégé Master Classes, I have played multiple paid gigs around the Ipswich and Brisbane region, written over 30 songs and am about to release my first single, which is in fact one of the songs I wrote during the Protégé Master Classes Songwriting program!

If anyone would have told me last year that I would be performing in front of people and releasing original music in less than 12 months’ time, I would’ve laughed and said they’re seriously kidding! I couldn’t be more thankful to Studio 188 for helping me take that next, more professional, step in my music career!

Studio 188 is home to the Protégé Master Classes, Ipswich City Council’s youth arts development program . Learn from industry professionals and participate in a range of free and paid workshops, events, networking opportunities and performances specialising in music, drama, dance, visual art and production . Workshops and events are open to all people of any age and ability . Previous facilitators include Shake & Stir Theatre Co ., Queensland Theatre, QMusic, I Heart Songwriting Club, and Music Industry Inside Out .

HIRING THE VENUE

VENUE HIRE:

� All bookings must be a minimum of 3 hours

� Bump In/Out, Rehearsals and Workshops $120 .00 per hour

� Performances $180 .00 per hour

� $70 .00 Venue Set Up Fee (Non-Negotiable)

� Included in this fee:

― 1 x Supervising Audio/Lighting Technician

― 1 x Front of House/Bar Staff

� Community hirers are offered a discount of 45% subject to confirmation of eligibility .

TICKETING:

Studio 188 can provide a full range of ticketing services for your event . Costs are:

� $105 .00 one off set up fee

� $2 .05 commission fee per ticket

� Ticketing sales reports and updates can be provided .
