January 2020 EV Registration Updates

• Plug-in electric vehicles (EVs) are registered in 90% of Vermont communities.

• The number of EVs in the state increased by 731 vehicles or 24% over the past year.

• Plug-in vehicles comprised 6.2% of new passenger vehicle registrations over the past

quarter.

• About 15% of plug-in vehicles registered in the last quarter were leased, a popular and

affordable way to obtain an electric car.

• Used EV registrations continue to grow as an estimated 16% of EVs registered in the last

quarter were used.

• About 57% of the EVs are plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) which can run on both

electricity and gasoline, providing flexibility to run on gasoline when needed.

• There are 48 unique models of plug-in cars registered in the state. One new model

entered Vermont this quarter – the BMW 740e.

• The Nissan LEAF had 49 added registrations this quarter, the most of any model. This

was followed by the Tesla Model 3 (46), Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid (31),

Chevrolet Bolt (25), Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid (25), Ford Fusion PHEV (25), Mitsubishi

Outlander PHEV (17), and Hyundai Kona Electric (17).

• Chittenden County has the most EVs registered (1,396) and highest rate of EV

ownership with about 1 EV for every 112 people.

• There are now 232 locations with public charging for electric vehicles across the state.

• Vermont has 25 DC Fast Chargers available for EVs equipped with this technology to

quickly recharge in about 30-60 minutes for longer trips.
