VET success story Ryan Summerton We congratulate Year 12 student Ryan Summerton on his Apprenticeship in the Building and Construction Industry (which he has just commenced). Ryan and his teachers as well as the LEC tutoring team have all worked very hard to ensure that Ryan will also be able to complete his SACE; a wonderful outcome and one which was fully supported by his employer. Ryan's responses below give us a real insight into what can be achieved by a positive and proactive approach to personal career development and the work ethic to make the most of any opportunities presented. What made you decide to leave school and take this apprenticeship offer? I was already certain on the path that I was going to take and at this particular point of time (provided I could achieve my SACE) school couldn't really offer me anything better than the apprenticeship in regards to my career. The company that approached me also contributed to my decision as it was a highly regarded company with great staff and had a great reputation, it was basically an offer I could not refuse! How did your structured work placement assist you? The work experience that I had previously completed with G-Force Constructions was a crucial factor in winning the apprenticeship as it is a time to show the company your skills and work ethic. It was also a time to make good impressions on the staff who you will be working with. It is so important that you put your best foot forward and work as hard as you can to really show the company your qualities but also how you can contribute to their success. What are your goals for the future? In the future I am looking to achieve my builder’s license and ultimately pursue my career in property development. That is my ultimate plan yet it is a long process so I am still open to whatever opportunities may come my way. Finally, what advice would you give to students based on your experience? Some advice for students looking to head down the same path as me would really be to show initiative and again put your best foot forward and make the effort whether it be at your VET course or at school as you will always be returned the favour. What you get out of your VET course is strongly based on the work you put in yourself and for me that is how I was offered an apprenticeship. We wish Ryan every success into the future and look forward to hearing about his career journey. VET success story Ryan Summerton

We congratulate Year 12 student Ryan Summerton on his Apprenticeship in the Building and Construction Industry (which he has just commenced).

In this Issue Congratulations to Ryan Summerton, Luke Paparella, Will Scott, Isaac White, Maddy Proud, Tiffany De Sousa Machado and Daniel Conley

VET gives a recent old scholar Luke Paparella an excellent start to his career

Our congratulations to Luke Paparella on winning the HIA-Stratco 1st Year Apprentice of the Year Award for 2017. Luke finished school in 2015 and started an apprenticeship with Andrew Ramage at JK Ramage Builders in January 2016. Andrew then nominated Luke for the HIA award after his excellent performance during the first year of his apprenticeship and in Luke's words..............."which I was honoured to win. I completed the building and construction VET course during Years 11 and 12 which allowed me to secure an apprenticeship. I now do various types of carpentry jobs such as 1st fix framing, 2nd fix, building decks, pergolas and new houses. I really enjoy my career choice as I have always had a passion for building and construction. My aim is to finish my four year apprenticeship and become a qualified builder."

Housing Industry Association (HIA) will be attending our Careers Expo on Thursday 6th July 6.00 – 7.30 pm.

Will Scott Year 11 student in Chanel House competed in the 2017 ISA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain in mid-June. Will qualified at the ASA Australasian titles in April in Melbourne, Australia. Placing 11th out of roughly 30 of Australia & New Zealand's best professional riders. The top 15 of the competitors qualify to compete in 2017 ISA World Championships. Will is currently the only South Australian rider to go to Spain to compete and it is his second year competing in Barcelona.

2016 Old Scholar Isaac White has taken up a Basketball scholarship to Stanford University in the USA. Isaac has represented SHC, SA and Australia in a host of different Basketball competitions. We can all learn from Isaac's tenacity and focus...........

“For the majority of my life, people have put ceilings on me, and put limitations on me, ultimately, I don’t believe in that. I believe I have what it takes, mentally. It may not appear, physically, but I know I have the gifts, mentally, to take my career as far as I can.......Basketball is my priority, but it’s equally as important that I get the best academic opportunity..........I was very excited about what Stanford has to offer in that area. Ultimately, I’m there to play basketball, but I’m a hard working kid, and I’ll make the most of that academic opportunity.” (As reported on Foxsports.com.au)

Congratulations to old scholar 2011 Maddy Proud (on right), who in 2017 relocated to Sydney to play netball for the NSW Swifts and in her first season recently took out two club awards; QBE Most Valued Player and Members' Player of the Year. Her coach Rob Wright said "Maddy has been incredible for the Swifts this year and her work ethic has been something to behold."

What can a sports carnival teach you about your career journey?? I was recently fortunate enough to attend the 23rd Marist Netball Carnival in NSW with the SHC team of 10 players. The team played 17 games across three days and earnt the right to play off in the grand final which they subsequently won by a goal in (to use a well-worn cliché) a nail biting finish. The team were all focused on the goal of winning the carnival and had trained hard and prepared well; each player knew that they had a part to play in achieving this goal. They played fifteen games across 2 days and then went into the semis and Championship grand final. A few of the players were carrying injuries and the tough schedule was pretty exhausting for all. In a shortened game format it is really important to be able to switch on both mentally and physically and absorb pressure and then switch off and recover well for the next challenge. The team lost a few games along the way as well as securing some fantastic wins where they had to fight back after being down by a few goals and outplayed by the opposition. Throughout all of this Coach Alex Penhall had prepared the girls perfectly and they responded to her call for the discipline to stick with the process and self-belief in their own and each other's ability. So, what has this got to do with career development?? Often we might set ourselves the goal of getting into a course or a program or achieving a certain grade, or mastering a certain skill. For that goal to be achieved it will definitely take thorough individual preparation and attention, things may not work out as you planned so you may have to try again or try a different approach. You will probably be disappointed or frustrated or challenged. You might have to seek advice or assistance and reset your goal into a few mini goals along the way. It will take time, energy and patience as well as critical evaluation. Just as the SHC team experienced, a strong work ethic and self-belief can carry you a very long way toward achieving your goals. Apparent setbacks, obstacles and losses along the way can be powerful learning opportunities that make you stronger and better equipped for the next and or final challenge. Congratulations to the wonderful SHC team who have led by example and shown us all what hard work and determination can achieve.

Le Cordon Bleu Gastronomic Day ‘A Day in a Life’ Friday 5th May, 2017

Mary Labozzetta and Judy O’Dea, the College’s two infamous Food & Hospitality gurus were recently guests of Le Cordon Bleu and following is an account of their gastronomic adventure.

Starting the day with a presentation of the Champagne region by Wine Lecturer / Sommelier, Trevor Maskell, we discovered the nuances of the varietals and the disgorgement method to create the distinctive taste of a quality French Champagne.

Moving on to the lecture kitchen we joined the Cordon Bleu class and witnessed Patisserie Chef present pastry skills to an International student audience who travel far and wide to participate in this high calibre education in Food & Hospitality.

Upon entering the bus we experienced a scenic tour of the Adelaide Hills region highlighting the vineyards, orchards and berry growers prominently seen at the local Adelaide markets.

Arriving eagerly to Mount Lofty Ranges Vineyard Restaurant our gastronomic needs were met by a unique Hill’s menu using local produce to enhance the use of fresh seafood, poultry and honey. This was accompanied by freshly made sourdough bread from a wood fired oven which was ALL delicious!

Heading back home to Le Cordon Bleu, Regency Park we stopped at Harrisville Orchards, Lenswood, where we were able to taste a range of seasonal apples and the newly released ‘Rocket’ Apple marketed to the dietary needs of children.

Needless to say this Gastronomic Day was an experience to savour and to return and share this contemporary knowledge with our Food & Hospitality students at Sacred Heart College. Mary Labozzetta and Judy O’Dea
