Cloning and System Reconfiguration of Physical Machines
Whenyouimportaphysicalsystem,ConverterEnterpriseusescloningandsystemreconfigurationtocreate
avirtualmachinethatiscompatiblewithVirtualCenter.
Cloningistheprocessofcreatingacloneddisk,wherethecloneddiskisavirtualdiskthatisanexactcopyof
thesourcephysicaldisk.Thisinvolvescopyingthedataonthesourcemachinesharddiskandtransferring
thatdatatoatargetvirtualdisk(thenewcloneddisk).
Systemreconfigurationistheprocessofadjustingthemigratedoperatingsystemtoenableittofunctiononvirtualhardware.Thisadjustmentisperformedonthetargetvirtualdiskaftercloningandenablesthetarget
virtualdisktofunctionasabootablesystemdiskinavirtualmachine.
Themigrationprocessisnondestructive,soyoucancontinuetousetheoriginalsourcemachineafterthe
importcompletes.Ifyouplantorunanimportedvirtualmachineonthesamenetworkasthesourcephysical
machine,modifythenetworknameandIPaddressononeofthemachines,sothatthephysicalandvirtual
machinescancoexist.
Hot and Cold Cloning
ConverterEnterprisesupportshotcloningandcoldcloning.Hotcloning,alsocalledlivecloningoronline
cloning,entailscloningthesourcemachinewhileitisrunningitsoperatingsystem.Coldcloning,alsocalled
offlinecloning,
entails
cloning
the
source
machine
when
it
is
not
running
its
operating
system.
In
cold
cloning,
yourebootthesourcemachinefromaCDthathasitsownoperatingsystemandincludethestandalone
VMwareConverterEnterpriseapplication.Coldcloningleavesnofootprintonthesourcemachine.
Remote and Local Cloning
Forremotecloning,youcanaccessthesourcemachinewithouthavingtophysicallytouchit,aslongasitis
runningandaccessibletothenetwork.Withlocalcloning,youcanusestandaloneVMwareConverter
Enterpriserunningonthesourcemachinetoperformthemigration.
Remote Hot Cloning of a Physical Machine
Thefollowingworkflowisanexampleofhotcloning,inwhichthephysicalmachinebeingclonedexperiences
nodowntime.YouusetheConverterEnterprisewizardtosetupamigrationtaskandConverterEnterprise
automaticallyperformsallofthecloningtasks.

supported.Onlymasterbootrecord(MBR)disksaresupported.GUIDpartitiontable(GPT)disksarenot
supported.
HotcloningsupportsalltypesofsourcevolumesrecognizedbyWindows,exceptWindows NT 4
faulttolerantvolumes.WindowsNT4withmirroredvolumesissupported.
Disk-Based Cloning
ConverterEnterprisesupportsdiskbasedcloningforcoldcloningandforimportingexistingvirtual
machines.Diskbasedcloningtransfersallsectorsfromalldisks,preservingallvolumemetadata.Thedestinationvirtualmachinereceivesthesamevolumesofthesametypeasthoseofthesourcevirtualmachine.
Diskbasedcloningsupportsalltypesofbasicanddynamicdisks.
Migrating Existing Virtual Machines and System Images
ConverterEnterpriseoutputsanewVMwarevirtualmachinebasedonasourcevirtualmachineorsystem
image.Themigrationprocessisnondestructive,soyoucancontinuetousetheoriginalsourcevirtualmachine
orsystemimagewiththeproductusedtocreateit.TorunanimportedVMwarevirtualmachineonthesame
networkasthesourcevirtualmachine,modifythenetworknameandIPaddressononeofthevirtual

ConverterEnterpriseonlysupportsrestoringthedisks.
ConverterEnterprisedoesnotmaintainthe.nvramfileortheVMwarelogfiles.Onlydisksarepreserved.
ConverterEnterprisedoesnotreadtheoriginallocationsettingsfromthecatalogfile.Torestoretothesame
location,youmustlookupinformationsuchasdatastore,hostname,foldername,andresourcepoolinthe
catalogfileandenteritintheImportwizard.Inaddition,ConverterEnterprisedoesnotreadtheoriginal
displaynamefromthecatalogfile.Ifyouwanttousethesamenameanddontrememberit,youcanlookit

Information Not Preserved When Importing VCB Images
WhenrestoringVCBimages,ConverterEnterprisedoesnotpreservecertainhardwarebackinginformation
fromtheoriginalimage,butrathersubstitutesdefaultsettings.Thesearetheaffectedareas:
CDROMDefaultstodevicetype:hostdevice.
FloppyDefaultstodevicetype:hostdevice
NetworkadaptersDefaultstothelistofnetworkadaptersintheGUI.TheMACaddressisnot
preserved.Itisregeneratedbythedestinationhost.
SerialportDefaultstophysicalserialportondestinationhostmachine.
ParallelportDefaultstophysicalparallelportondestinationhostmachine.
WhenrestoringVCBimages,ConverterEnterprisedoesnotpreservecertainothervirtualmachineproperties
fromtheoriginalimage,butsubstitutesdefaultsettings.Thesearetheaffectedareas:
UUIDTheBIOSandlocationofthevirtualmachine,identifiedbyuuid.biosanduuid.location,are
notpreserved,butregeneratedbythehostmachine.
DiskresourceallocationDefaultstothevaluesavailableonthehostwhenthevirtualmachineis
created.
Scheduling Recurring Tasks
WithConverterEnterprise,youcanscheduleanunlimitednumberofphysicaltovirtualrecurringtasksand
specifyhowtheexistingvirtualmachinesaretoberetained.Thisfunctionalityallowsyoutocreateavirtual
machinethatisaperiodicbackupofaphysicalsystem,whichstreamlinesthebackupprocess.Insteadof
restoringthebackupimagetotheoriginalsystembeforeyoucanrecoverit,youcanimmediatelyrecoverthe
imagebypoweringonthebackupvirtualmachine.

Youcankeepalimitednumberofvirtualmachinesasbackupstoanexistingmachinebyspecifyingthe
numberontheTaskpage.Topreventoverwritingofexistingvirtualmachines,Converter Enterpriseverifies
thatthemanagedorhostedtargetvirtualmachinedoesnotexist,andthetooltimeanddatestampsthe
existingvirtualmachine.
ConverterEnterprisegeneratessequentialvirtualmachinenamesanddeletesoldnames.
Inthemanagedenvironment,thevirtualmachinenameistheuniqueidentifierofthevirtualmachineandno
additionalstepsarerequired.
Inthehostedenvironment,thetoolcreatesanewdirectoryforeachvirtualmachine.Thenameofthedirectory
mustmatchthevirtualmachinesname.
Iftheexistingtargetvirtualmachinecannotberenamed,forexampleifitisrunning,theclonestopsandthe
temporaryvirtualmachineisremovedtosavediskspace.
RetentionPolicyforVirtualMachineBackupImages
ConverterEnterpriseprovidestheoptiontokeepanunlimitednumberofrecentlyclonedvirtualmachinesfor
situationswhereitisbeneficialtohavemorethanonecopyofabackupofthesourcesystem.Forexample,if
diskspaceisnotanissue,youmightprefertokeepallbackupvirtualmachines,especiallyifthebackupsare
scheduledtoruninfrequently,suchasonceamonth.
Youcanspecifyonethefollowingconditionsforaretentionpolicy:
Overwriteonevirtualmachineeachtimeataskisrun.
Createanewvirtualmachinewitheachrunandspecifythenumberofpreviousimagestokeep.
Createanewvirtualmachinewitheachrunandkeepallimages.
Availablechoicesdependonthefrequencyyouselecttorunthetask.Forexample,ifyouselecttorunatask
onlyOnce,youcanchoosetooverwritethetargetvirtualmachine.
IfyouscheduleConverterEnterprisetooverwriteonetargetvirtualmachineeachtimeaconversiontaskis
executed,aftercloningsucceeds,theoldvirtualmachineisrenamedtoarandomuniquenameandthenew
virtualmachineisrenamedtothetargetname,afterwhichtheoldvirtualmachinedeleted.Thisapproach
requiresadditional
disk
space
but
guarantees
that
you
always
have
avalid
backup.
Operating System, Network, and Hardware Settings Af fected byConversion

viability

running

machine

resolvetheduplicateIDproblem.Youcanresolvethisproblembycustomizingthevirtualmachinesinthe
Import,Export,andReconfigurewizards.
Changes to Virtual Hardware
MostapplicationsshouldfunctioncorrectlyintheVMwarevirtualmachinebecausetheirconfigurationand
datafileshavethesamelocationastheydidonthesourcevirtualmachine.However,applicationsmightnot
workiftheydependonspecificcharacteristicsoftheunderlyinghardware,suchastheserialnumberorthe
devicemanufacturer.
Whenyoutroubleshootavirtualmachineafteritismigrated,noticethefollowingpotentialhardwarechanges:
CPUmodelandserialnumbers,iftheyareactivated,canbedifferentafterthemigration.TheycorrespondtothephysicalcomputerhostingtheVMwarevirtualmachine.
Ethernetadapterscanbedifferent(AMDPCNetorVMXnet)withadifferentMACaddress.TheIP
addressofeachinterfacemustbeindividuallyreconfigured.
Graphicscardscanbedifferent(VMwareSVGAcard).
Thenumberofdisksandpartitionsarethesame,buteachdiskdevicecanhaveadifferentmodeland
differentmanufacturerstrings.
Primarydiskcontrollerscanbedifferentfromthesourcemachinescontrollers.
Applicationsmightnotworkiftheydependondevicesthatarenotavailablefromwithinavirtual
machine.
