Renewable Energy and climate change:Integration into the Curriculum
Viborg Tekniske Gymnasium
NoteMost of the activities were also done within
the framework of the Comenius project, but could also been done without the project
There were other activities within the Comenius project, that are not reported here, because they were not done by the whole class
Classes involved:Class 1.4 (2009/2010)Class 1.3 (2009/2010), class 2.3 (2010/2011)Class 1.2 (2010/2011)
Energy and communication”Theme 2: Energy”This is a normal part of the curriculum where
different subjects are involved.Training in making websitesInformation on energy situation in DenmarkIn physics and communication/it:
Making a website on renewable energy in English
Example of a website
Taking pictures of the energy situation at homeThis could also be done at normally, but is not
likely. This was something special for the Comenius project
Pictures were shown in the class of the energy situation at home in Cyprus and Italy
Education in climate (2 hrs)Information on:radiation from the sunabsorption of radiationgreenhouse gas effectglobal warming potentialeffect of volcanoes
Class exchange with BBSII, Leer (1)During 3 days mixed groups of a class from each school
have been working together on renewable energy and climate change in Leer.
Concept: 1. General excursion (Wind turbine factory Enercon)2. Different groups were visiting different
institutions/companies working with renewable energy3. Power point presentations in English were made
together4. The presentations were shown in a common meeting
and there was limited discussionThis could also be done within a school or just in
cooperation between two schools in the future

Class exchange with BBS II, Viborg (3)
Comenius visit to Viborg (1)Designing future housingsDuring the visit of the Comenius project to
Viborg with pupils from other schools future housings were designed
Comenius visit to Viborg (2)Visiting the University of Aarhus: biogas and
biomass
Comenius visit to Viborg (3)Visiting the electricity museum and getting
information on climate change
Additional information (1)Within the normal curriculum we have a theme on
energy and this gives good opportunities to work on renewable energy and climate change. Period 1-2 weeks within different subjects
There is time for subjects that are not part of the normal curriculum: estimate 10% of the time
Whether this time is really available depends on how fast the class is. In classes that are slow this time is not available. The class which was most active in the Comenius project was slow and for that reason we had a problem of finishing the normal physics curriculum in time.
Additional information (2)Although the pupils have been working in
English (during the exchange with BBSII and when making a website in English), English as a subject was not involved. It would be better if that was the case and information on renewable energy and climate change would be part of it so that the pupils get used to the terminology.
