Come to Victoria to learn and explore!
Mark Joffe

On behalf of AMMI Canada and CACMID, we invite you to join us in Victoria from April 2nd to 5th for the 2014 Annual Conference.
The AMMI Canada - CACMID Annual Conference is THE Canadian meeting for physicians, microbiologists, researchers, laboratory technologists, as well as students interested in infectious diseases and diagnostic microbiology. Last year’s program in Québec City was a stunning success; the Program Planning Committee has been very active in creating a program that builds on the Québec meeting and the success of previous conferences while incorporating suggestions from our attendees, association members, and affiliated partners. There will be plenary sessions, integrated symposia, oral abstract presentations, poster sessions, exhibits, clinical vignettes, Trainees’ Day, CCM Workshop, QM Seminar and our Special Lecture. In addition, we encourage our collaborating societies and special interest groups to meet face-to-face while in Victoria. We would be pleased to assist by providing meeting space.
Victoria provides a beautiful venue for our conference. It is a modern city full of great restaurants and beautiful landscape underscored with old world charm. With the mildest climate in Canada, we anticipate great weather in April, an escape from the winter that may still be blanketing the rest of the country. Stay with us at the stunning Empress Hotel, living amongst history and the opportunity to partake in elegant traditions such as afternoon tea.
The AMMI Canada – CACMID Annual Conference 2014 in Victoria will provide you with the latest information in the fields of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology. Just as important, it will provide you opportunities to reconnect with old friends and colleagues, to meet new ones, and to network.
We encourage you to present your research by submitting abstracts for oral or poster presentation. If you are a student or trainee, there are a number of awards available to you. Build your presentation skills before an always friendly and supportive audience.
Come for the sessions, stay for the fun! We look forward to seeing you in Victoria in April!

The AMMI Canada – CACMId Special Lecture The Impact of Climate and Environmental Changes on Infectious Diseases
Thursday April 3 Immediately following the Awards Presentations
Moderators: Heather Adam (Winnipeg, MB)
Mark Joffe (Edmonton, AB)
Speaker: David Fisman (Toronto, ON)
Dr. Fisman is an infectious disease physician and epidemiologist at the University of Toronto’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health, where he is Professor of Epidemiology. He is also a practicing Infectious Diseases clinician at the Toronto Western Hospital. He trained in clinical infectious diseases at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre in Boston and from 1999 to 2001 was an AHRQ Fellow in Health Policy at Harvard Centre for Risk Analysis. His interests are in analytical and mathematical epidemiology of infectious diseases, and in health economic evaluation of communicable disease control programs.
The global environment is changing at an unprecedented rate, and in a manner attributable to climate change mediated by anthropogenic “greenhouse gases”, including carbon dioxide and methane. Direct links between the physical environment and infection have been recognized since the time of Hippocrates (ca. 400 B.C.E.) and are still readily observable in low-income countries with limited health-enhancing infrastructure (e.g., water treatment and sewage management capabilities). The impact of the physical environment on infection risk is less clear – and less well studied – in high-income countries. Nonetheless, there are numerous known mechanisms whereby climate and weather may impact the epidemiology of infectious disease syndromes in high-income countries like Canada, though these mechanisms differ across infectious disease
groupings (e.g., may be distinct for waterborne, vectorborne, and enteric diseases). Climate change (a term that embraces changing temperatures, precipitation patterns, and the frequency of extreme weather events) could impact all three components of the host-pathogen-environment epidemiological triad but understanding of the impacts of climate on infectious disease risk is in its infancy (as are tools necessary to generate such understanding). Better insights into the impact of climate change on infectious disease epidemiology is important for clinical care provision, design and refinement of disease surveillance systems, optimal protection of vulnerable populations, and implementation of cost-effective prevention strategies. In this lecture, I shall review existing evidence of unprecedented anthropogenic climatic change, discuss the implications of such change for several infectious diseases of public health importance, and review currently available methodological tools and disease surveillance systems, that might allow better preparation for the impact of global environmental change on infectious disease risk in Canada.
Objectives:• Participants will gain an understanding of the implications of
changing weather patterns and changing frequency of extreme weather events for infectious disease epidemiology, globally and in Canada
• Participants will become familiar with challenges to the study of climate change and infectious disease in Canada, including limitations of data sources, challenges in aggregating disease counts and exposure measures in time and space, and the multi-dimensional nature of climate change impacts on the environment
• Participants will review evidence suggesting that vector-borne disease incidence, including incidence of Lyme disease and West Nile virus infection, is influenced by weather and climatic factors. Evidence linking extreme weather and climatic change to enteric disease in the Canadian context will also be reviewed
