Aging

Skin aging is a degenerative process caused by intrinsic,

chronological aging, and extrinsic, environmental aging.

Both intrinsic and extrinsic aging contribute to problems in

the dermis and the epidermis leading to slower cell turnover

and breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers. Visible signs of

aging include a loss of skin’s radiance and firmness, as well as

wrinkles, laxity, and uneven pigmentation.

Acne

Acne is caused by excess sebum production and inefficient

desquamation. Typical acne-related lesions include com-

edones, papules, pustules, and nodes or cysts. While the

cause of acne is unknown, hormones and stress are contrib-

uting factors.

Excess and uneven distribution of melanin, the natural

pigment that gives color to skin, can be exacerbated due to
