A word from DG Jim

Greetings fellow Lions, Lioness & Leo members.

A busy time for your D.G & Robyn the past few weeks! We attended the District 202D Convention hosted by D.G David Carlow & Gillian, held in Rongotea, 4th-6th March, then District 202E Convention hosted by D.G John Roger held in Kaikoura, 11th-13th March. District 202M Convention hosted by D.G. Nalini Bhaskar & Udaya was held in Karori Wellington, this last weekend 18th-20th March.

We stayed in Carterton on the way down to Kaikoura and the afternoon we arrived coincided with the meeting night of the Carterton Lions Club which is where I join Lions in 1975. I was made very welcome at their meeting, and had the pleasure of inducting 2 new members. One a former member of the now non-existent Taumarunui Lions Club, the other new member was a 20yr old young man. As they didn't have a guest speaker organised.......that too became me!! It was great catching up with members of my

first Lions Club.Following Kaikoura Convention, we returned to Carterton and spent time catching up with family & old friends before attending the Wellington Convention.Great to have VDGE 202L Arvind Raman & Opotiki PDG Garry Pavitt attending Wellington Convention & share the company of International 2nd V.P Narish Argawaai & wife, Lion Narita. Int. Director Eric Carter & Karen.

It is always a special privilege catching up with our International representatives. We have enjoyed being able to attend 5 of the 7 Conventions, but it is now good to have them all behind us.

I wish to make a belated congratulation to Sunshine Coast Lion Bronwyn Hanna for receiving the Queens Service Medal in the New Year Honours list. Congratulations and well done Bronwyn.

I have much more to say, but will drip feed this over the next few editions. Writing this from a stopover in Palmerston North on our way home! HAVE A GREAT WEEK, KEEP UP YOUR GOOD WORK!

D.G Jim.

BALLOONS OVER WAIKATO REPORT

Margaret Brasting

IT HAS BEEN A ‘BALLOONING AMAZING’ week.

Lions of District 202L have done it again – teams have come together to ensure the BOW Charity of Choice delivered on the commitment to the Balloons over Waikato Trust. This was the commitment to provide the Volunteers for this Iconic NZ Event.

A very BIG THANK YOU to: Richard Norris – Crowd Ambassador T/L and Robyn Creighton – T/L

Sponsors’ Marquee for bringing together the teams for the two key areas that we need to ‘staff’ as part of the commitment.

Andrew Malloch – Merchandise T/L and the Walk through Balloon Crew from South Hamilton Lions for the hard work that makes the money for Lions over the Event.

The Rotary team who worked alongside Lions to learn how it comes together so they can pick up the baton in 2017.

All the Lions and families and friends who got up early to be at the Common, who were part of the big team at the Night Glow and to those who fronted to do the Pack Up on Sunday morning – We couldn’t have got there without each one of you. THANK YOU ALL.

Raffle Ticket Sellers across the District. Suez Reid and Lois Gardiner have been working hard on managing the Raffle Tickets and it is not too late to get behind them and ensure that all the books are sold. The raffle closes on 28 March and Lions will make $10,000 if all the books are sold. Only one book each for every Lion registered in 202L would mean that we would get this amount….Just one book sold each.

A small reminder that the funds will go to the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Cancer Society this year. They are clear that the greater portion of the funds are to be used for support services in the Communities we serve as Lions…..Services such as sun smart programmes to ensure our children and grandchildren are far more aware of the dangers of sunburn than we ever were, Community Living Well programmes and Nurse Liaison support for people living with Cancer. Please help get to the $10,000 target this year

BALLOONS VISIT TOKOROA AND TE KUITI

Balloons Over Waikato visited Tokoroa for the City Burn and it was a great success for the overall Event. A big thank you to

the Lions from Host Club who provide the additional Crew for the Walk Through Balloon. Though your efforts $911.70 cents were raised by the Gold Coin donations. A Big thank you to Tokoroa Districts Lions for managing the merchandise sales and all the Lions of Tokoroa who supported the team – Feedback for Classic Events is very positive. THANK YOU ALL

Another first for Lions and the BOW Fiesta – The Balloons visited Te Kuiti for the first time and Te Kuiti Lions flew the lions flag high with their merchandise sale and promoting the raffle – THANK YOU ALL.

Where there is a need there is a Lion – and you all stepped up to support the project…….Great work

An appeal from Lion Arvind Raman for the people of Fiji, Cyclone Winston

Dear Lions

I have spoken with our DG Jim and he has given me the ok to send this to all Clubs. So here is my appeal

I have finally managed to get in touch with my families in Fiji who have fortunately not have had any major damage to their properties, however that cannot be said for rest of the people in the town and villagers around.

They have suffered massive damage and many of them have lost their houses as a result. I have enclosed a couple of photos so you can see it for yourselves. The eye of the Cyclone Winston went over the 2 towns that we are trying to help with an average speed around 300km/h wind.

They have enough food and water for the families and books and pens for the kids but what they don’t have any shelter. What they need is corrugated iron and timber to have a roof over their heads.

The first lot of money that was sent from family and friends was used to buy enough corrugated iron and timber to build one room per family, and this has provided shelters for 12 families.

The families are in desperate need for shelter so if you could help me to send more money that would be much appreciated.  I have team of volunteers working there.

Individual donation is most welcome as well. Please circulate this to your Club members as well. Please make chq to Lions District 202L.

Any amount of donation is appreciated.

Thanks a lot, in advance.Yours in LionismKind RegardsArvind Raman.

Lion Tails – Out and About

The Ladies of Rotorua Sulphur City Reinstate donated Painting into Cancer Ward

This painting was first presented to the Chemotherapy Ward from our Club in the year 2000. Due to the alterations and extension to Rotorua Hospital it was taken down and put into safe keeping. It was recently re-hung in the Atrium outside the Chemotherapy Ward. The painting, titled ‘The First Glimpse – Lake Rotoma’ was painted by artist Marc Spykerbos and depicts the first sighting of Lake Rotoma coming from Whakatane over the Rotoma ranges. He used photos taken early last century to recreate the road as it looked on completion in 1899.

Report from President Judi Farrell

Last Wednesday 9th March at 6.00pm, Barbara, Maureen, Liz, and myself were met at the front foyer of the Lakes District Hospital by Dale Oliff (General Manager Clinical Services), a Member of the Board and Project Manager of the new Chemotherapy facility for the purpose to reinstate the beautiful painting titled “The First Glimpse – Lake Rotoma commissioned by the Sulphur City Lions Club in May 2000, to hang in the Chemotherapy Ward presented by the then President, Maureen Carrington..Since the new build of the Chemotherapy Unit we wondered where the painting had gone to, and with a little detective work Maureen discovered its whereabouts. The club contacted the Lakes District Board. It was in need of repair (needing a new frame), so with the generosity of the Hospital the painting has been rejuvenated by being reframed (looks like aged wood which fits in beautifully with the old look of the painting). It is on the wall at the entrance of the unit, there are several plaques depicting who presented it and the story behind the painting. The unit facility is very impressive, an airy and light space looking out through the big Oak trees to Lake Rotorua. There are 9 chairs and 3 beds. The Unit Services Chemotherapy - all clinical disciplines, dermatology, etc. They have medical day stays - Bone marrow, lumber puncture, recovery after invasive radiology procedures - liver biopsies etc. A nursing staff of 7, an Oncologist and Haematologist twice a month each, plus Nurse Aid services. The facility is a vast improvement both in terms of workload, efficiency and staff. Staff and patients give great feedback.

I certainly got a great buzz seeing the painting back in its rightful place. It will be enjoyed by all in the future of this wonderful facility.

looks like a great day out visiting some interesting places

Taupo Pakeke Verne Milne Memorial Mystery Trip ~ An Honorary Ladies perspective

From the early morning start in the Mini Buses, that were more comfortable than a big bus and the great morning tea at Tirau, the trip was away to a good start.  Travelling through new and unfamiliar territory was a bonus but the wait in the hot sun at the Martha Mine was trying.  The scrumptious lunch made up for that hiccup.  The visit to the Victoria Battery at Waikino was exciting and the long climb up the steps to the underground tunnel was well worthwhile as was the trip

underground although daunting with hard hats etc. but it was exciting and a big learning curve.  The whole experience was appreciated I learnt a lot and look I forward to next year’s adventure.  Thank you Pakeke Lions for another memorable trip.   B M. The photo shows 34 Pakeke members, wives and Honorary Lady members at the Open Cast Marta Mine in Waihi.

Te Puke Kiwi Coast Long Lunch – A great way to say thanks to the Community

Last Tuesday the Te Puke Kiwicoast Lions held a Long Lunch in the Heritage Walkway. Locals and visitors enjoyed delicious food, listen to music and had an opportunity to chat while sitting at the long tables. Just a little taste of Italy.A great opportunity also to say thanks to the community for its support to our club over the years.
