What a great night it was at last
month’s meeting, with our
interview experiment! Many
thanks go to Trish Glossop for
her fine directing, and getting
this idea up and running. The
night turned out to be fun and
interesting.
The questions that were written out for our
interviewers, made it easier for them to control the
interview, and made it easier for the person who
was being interviewed, to answer. We had many
cameras operating, so I hope that the camera
operators got some great angles while capturing the
interviews, so when we edit the footage we will
have a lot of shots to use.
VIDEO COMPETITION
- Screening of entries in the September Video Competition - Presentation of awards
PRESENTATION by David Llewellyn - how to trace a line or road on a map - ProShow Producer -demonstrate creation of slide show (using photo and video files) (For more info, see p.3)

Stay Focused and Start Shooting.
Bob Hallett
President
Good luck to the entrants who submitted
their final entries in our September
Video Competition. I would like to see
more of our members enter our
competitions, or even bring some of
their footage in, to show on our big screen.
Thank you to John Wilson for his presentation on
how he gets to shoot and prepare for an unassisted
interview. I have worked with John many times
when he interviews people and he has an ability to
get the right information out of the person he
interviews, while using only one camera.
Don’t forget we have a “Show and Tell” segment,
so if you have something of interest for us to look
at, please bring it along.
Christmas is
rushing towards
us and our
committee is
planning our
Christmas
function, so I hope you will make
it, as we have planned a new venue and an
excellent meal will be served.
Congratulations to the winners of our Lucky Draw,
Albert Parisek and Mark Franks. Thank you all
for supporting it as it is one of our means of
keeping our very successful club running.
Thank you to all our committee
members for your input and ideas to
keep our members interested in what we
do at the club, and especially to Josie
Milgate for the wonderful newsletter we
get each month.
How nice is it now in our new Club room? I am
sure that we may now be able to get new members
interested in film making once we get
our Promo up and running
on Face Book, Vimeo, and
what other Media outlets that
are at our disposal.

It’s always interesting to view other people’s work.
We can draw many conclusions about their video
that they have total control over. They can be for
totally private use, or broadcast internationally over
the web. But some have to work and edit with what
people have shot. A student who had shot a video
was editing and asked for some advice. The shots
were focused sharply and exposure was correct.
The subject was in the frame with no bits missing.
So far, so good, but it lacked
something to make it “look
good”. The missing element
was in the framing. The missing
element in the framing is called
the “Rule of Thirds”.
Good composition in the
frame in nearly all
situations can have the
“Rule of Thirds” applied
to make aesthetically
appealing to the human
eye. It can enhance a
video beyond belief and just make it “work”.
To many artistic folk it comes naturally without
knowing why. To plebs like myself, it had to be
learned. Speilberg uses it, so does George Lucas,
and just about every great director. Salvador Dali
being a notable exception.
We see video that is correctly shot by professionals
and they will always frame up using the “Rule of
Thirds”. It becomes so natural after a while, that
they don't have to think about it, unless you are like
me and have to think about every shot, and have to
apply the “Rule of Thirds”.
At our next meeting, David Llewellyn
is going to show how to trace a line or
road on a map…perfect for those
travel and documentary videos.
He will also give a small presentation
on ProShow Producer. This is
software for slide shows that is easy to
use and powerful at the same time…
even video files can be inserted!

What a "productive" meeting we had last month as
we filmed a series of short interviews with some of
our members, on how they became interested in
videoing, what facets of videoing they find most
interesting and enjoyable, and why they like being
involved with South West Video Club.
After several bloopers as well as retakes, due to the
noise from the passing traffic outside, I know I was
relieved when Trish announced "That’s a Take",
at the end of my interviewer role with Laraine.
With the aim of creating a promotional video on
our club, its activities as well as profiling some of
our members, our experienced camera operators
Bob Hallett, Reinfrid, Max and
Mark Franks, and myself as the
"roving" camera recording the film
shoot, and off-screen audience
reactions, responded to the instruc-
tions of our very expert Director,
Trish, as she called for "Quiet on
Set"..... "Cameras Rolling".....
.... and with a clapperboard countdown, the
audience watched on as our WILLING
interviewees, David Llewellyn, Harold Pollard,
Mark Franks and Laraine Harris expertly
answered the questions put to them by their
respective interviewers, Bob Hallett, Kevin Mid-
dleton, John Wilson and myself, Jan Hudson.

At the end of
the "shoot",
Ron Potter
downloaded
the footage
from all
cameras,
which will be
available on disk to any club members who would
like to create their own video about our club, as
well as being used in a future project by our Edius
User Group.
Thank you to all
members who continue
to support us by
buying tickets and
especially Artbeats for
supporting our club by
donating the monthly
voucher for one lucky
member to obtain $500 worth of Artbeats Royalty
-free footage for use in their video productions.
The Artbeats prize was won by Albert Parisek.
There is now only one more meeting until we hold
our annual Christmas party, and as I was on
holidays at the time of our committee meeting, I
will have to rely on other
committee members to
report on the details of our
Christmas Party which will
be held on Wednesday
10th December.
Having just returned from a short two week
vacation in Hawaii, Disneyland and onto
Universal Studios with our son, daughter-in-law
and three young grandchildren, I have lots of video
to download from our trip, and look forward to
recalling the happy memories of this time as I edit
and create a DVD of this footage using my Edius
program for us all to remember the fun we had.
Just a reminder that members can hire the
camera slider on a weekly basis at a cost of $10.00
per week. We ask for a security deposit of $50.00
which will be refunded when the slider is returned
(damage free).
Please contact me
on 0408 160150
if you wish to
make use of this
facility.
Mark Franks was
the lucky winner of
the bottle of wine.
Congratulations to
both members, and
once again, thank
you all for supporting
our lucky draw each
month.
Thank you Trish, for organising this
night. It was a lot of fun and I am sure
that all members who attended, agreed
it was a success, and we hope to hold
more of these events in the new year.
A reminder that the Edius User Group will be
held at our new premises at "The Crossing" 33
Maddecks Ave Moorebank on Wednesday 5th
November, and our next club meeting on
Wednesday 12th November, so until then...
Happy Videoing…….

EDIUS User Group
Report
Reinfrid Langmann
I would also like to draw your attention to our
Scottish friend from Japan, Douglas. He has, on
his website, a very interesting comparison between
AVID Media Composer and Edius, and I would
like to show it to you.
Well, are you aware that our User Group has now
been in the making for nearly
twelve months?! Yes, it was
at our Christmas get-together
at David's place when I
mentioned to Jan about
forming an Edius User group.
Now nearly one year on, and we are all getting
quite good at using Edius. However, I must say
that I would like more users to become active and
present some of their work, and show how they
have achieved it.
Now that we are all using Edius 7.4.... it amazes
me how I was expected to pay for an upgrade of
AVID Media Composer (and the price was not
cheap). Here with Edius, we have the upgrade
free of charge!
I would also like to direct you to Douglas’ website
the Gaijin-Eyes Tutorials Forum!
http://forum.gaijin-eyes.com/forum2/index.php?
action=pm;sa=send;f=inbox;pmsg=2;quote;u=1
As I mentioned on different occasions, I have
learned more from Douglas regarding AVID than I
have from other training programs. So give it a go
and see what you think of his tutorials.
I would also like to inform you that David Tran is
now in a position to get all the ProDAD programs
(see page 6) for you in record time...
just ask Ron Potter... he purchased
Heroglyph version 4. I'm sure he will
be happy to also do a demo in the
not-too- distant future.
Here goes ... the result was quite interesting:
Avid Media Composer 6.5
Render time -23 minutes 55 seconds
Avid Media Composer 8.0
Render time -25minutes 27 seconds
Edius 7.31
Render time -13minutes 34 seconds
Not so bad is it?!
This one is about rendering, which was
mentioned at our meeting in the past.
So until the next time when we will meet again at
the Edius user group or our monthly meeting...
Regards,

Looking forward to seeing you at our next meeting
on Wednesday, 12th November.
Have fun sharing knowledge.

The venue for our
Christmas Party has
been decided, and
details have been
emailed to all our
members. It will be held on Wednes-
day, 10th December (7pm -10pm).
As the November meeting is the last one before
the party, we request that names and numbers
(of members and partners) attending, be made
available, as well as payment of $25 per person,
at this coming meeting, Wednesday, 12th Novem-
ber.
If you are unable to attend this
meeting, and would like to attend
the Christmas Party,
please notify me (or
any other committee
member) as soon as
possible, and then you
may pay David Tran at his shop.
It was great to see so many members bring their
cameras to the interview session at our last meeting
and participate in the activity.
Our Edius User Group meetings continue to be
productive. At our last meeting, Reinfrid Lang-
mann demonstrated the mirroring effect which
proved to be quite fascinating.
Thank you to all the volunteers who played a major
role in this multi-camera interview shoot,
especially the interviewees who enlightened us
with their interesting and at times, rather humorous
answers! It turned out to be such a FUN NIGHT.
John Wilson’s presentation was very informative.
Thank you, John for demonstrating the “unassisted
interview process” and sharing many interviewing
tips which you have learned throughout your
professional career.
Ron Potter demonstrated the many uses of the
“mask effect” accompanied by comprehensive
notes that he distributed.
I would like to thank both Reinfrid and Ron for
sharing the knowledge that they have gained by
experimenting with the various features that Edius
provides. Thank you also to David Tran for
attending the meetings and offering his support.
