Enrichment at WellingtonStretch and Grow!

This guide is for everyone at Wellington to introduce the Clubs and Societies on offer.

There really is something for everyone here. Many of these activities are unique passions of the staff running them and may not be readily available to pupils again. Don’t leave Wellington regretting not taking an opportunity!

The details included outline the activity, who it is open to and when it takes place. We encourage all members of the College community to stretch their interests into something new, and to grow their skills in existing areas!

If you have any questions about the information below please contact the named staff in charge or contact Mr Kirkham on [email protected]. Similarly, if you wish to adapt or create a club yourself email or chat to Mr Kirkham. We warmly welcome pupil led activities and will support you in any way we can.

1. Your mind – mental challenge, interest and intrigueAmnesty

Amnesty International is a global organisation that works to combat human rights abuses around the world. It operates by bringing awareness to issues which are often neglected, and putting pressure on the perpetrator by organising petitions. Amnesty at Wellington College is a society which collaborates with the branch of Amnesty for the UK based in London. All are welcome! We meet every other Friday at 4.45pm in the Moral Room of the Library. Most of what we accomplish at school is getting the student body, faculty, staff, and administration to sign our petitions which we then send along to the 'home base' in London. We also host a range of speakers who are presenting on human rights and often their own experiences.

Book Chat

You can get first pick of the new books, talk about what you like to read or maybe choose to read the same book as the rest of the group. Open to all year groups and we always have great refreshments! In the summer term you can become a “Carnegie Critic” and read and judge books on the “Carnegie Book Prize” shortlist.

Book Chat FAQs

Do I have to come every week? No, we know that sometimes other commitments mean that you can’t come every week. Please come along when you can, we’d love to see you!

What year group is it for? Everyone! If you like reading then this is the group for you – it doesn’t matter what year you’re in.

Do we all have to read the same book? No, but if you all decide at some point that you’d like to read the same book then we can get copies for you.

Will there be snacks? Yes! And fruit juice!3

We also often have people present their coursework or IOPs (IB English presentation that is 20% of your final grade) which are always fascinating. However, the society isn't just about the speaker - the discussion after the presentation is always fascinating and encapsulates the diversity not just

Creative Writing

“After nourishment, shelter and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world.”

Philip Pullman

The Wellington Creative Writing Society runs on Thursday afternoons at 6.00pm in The Library (and around the school - we write in some amazing places you might never have come across!).  It is open to all year groups and to both new and experienced writers.  The atmosphere is informal and supportive - it's a place where everyone finds the courage to express themselves and to explore their creativity.  The sessions comprise writing workshops (prose fiction, poetry, script writing and much more) led by teachers and published writers. We also hope to hold a 24h charity writeathon for Save The Children. There will be two writing competitions this year: First Page Novel Writing Competition in the Michaelmas term and The Gavin Ewart Poetry Competition in the Lent term.

On the last Thursday of each term we have a celebratory session with drinks, nibbles and the chance to read the writing you've produced that term.

At the end of the academic year, we publish an anthology of our writing called South Front. Throughout the year we seek out opportunities to publish student writing both on and off-line and encourage our members to enter writing competitions.

During the first week of the Easter holidays we are going on a writing retreat to Lumb Bank in Yorkshire run by The Arvon Foundation: 5 wonderful dates tutored by published writers. Who is it open to? All year groupsWhen does it happen? Thursdays 6.00 – 7.00pmWho is in charge?  Mrs Macgregor [email protected]

They have a series on E4 and have had their shows aired on BBC Three before.  They visit every other week. We usually have three one hour shows per year but have hopes to increase the regularity of our shows. If anyone would like to join they can contact myself at [email protected] or Ms Morse

Wellington Short Film Society

Wellington Short Films was formed two years ago as a group aiming to create short films on a regular basis. The group consisted mainly of WTV members who wanted to produce a few creative short films alongside WTV's more journalistic content, in order to gain more experience. Starting with only a few members, who worked for several months to produce a 12 minute film, “A Capsule In Time,” they quickly expanded and now have 20 members. The group is formed of many people with a range of different interests who all contribute differently to the making of the films. Some are interested in acting, others in writing, filming, editing and effects, art and music, etc. and everyone plays a different role in the filmmaking process. Hopefully the group will carry on evolving and improving over the next couple of years and will start creating increasingly bigger and better films.

Who is it open to? It's open to anyone from any year group, as long as they have a

Involvement can include: finding all the great stories, discussing content with the editorial team, writing, editing, and designing the magazine… basically, everything to do with magazine journalism! Each year the Wellingtonian produce five widely read editions; a real achievement! Who is it open to? The core group is selective but pupils from all years are welcome to

Meetings are on Wednesdays 2.30 – 4.30pm during service time, but pupils film and edit in their spare time throughout the week. WTV produce the regular WTV magazine of programmes for consumption around college, filming, interviewing, editing, promoting and work has included official documentaries from the Albert Hall, the Round Square Conference along with Jimmy Higham music video and 707 Remembrance special.

Throughout the year, students and guests will offer practical and technical advice over a series of workshops. These workshops are for the wider student body who have submitted an application and will run between 4.30 – 5.30pm on a Wednesday. Mr Richards is the coordinator with student producer’s making decisions related to content and tone.

3. Your spirit of adventure – looking for a challenge?Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award starts with Bronze in 4th Form, Silver in 5th Form and Gold in 6th

Form. It can be joined at any level, although there are benefits to going all the way through. Registration takes place at the beginning of the school year in September. Pupils will develop an understanding of themselves, others and the environment through four activity sections: Expedition, Physical, Skills, Volunteering and at Gold level there is the Residential.

The Award is a fantastic way to celebrate what pupils do outside of the classroom, in clubs, societies, on Wednesday afternoons and for games. The expeditions start with two days walking at Bronze, for which we have multiple options each year. At Silver the expeditions expand to include canoeing as well as walking; however, they also become a little more committing and require training, a three day practice expedition and a three day assessment. For Gold the options continue to expand with cycling and horse riding, as well as some more adventurous overseas assessment options. Those that jump directly to Gold will have to do an expedition training weekend, followed by a practice expedition at Easter and a four day assessment in the Summer.

The award is rewarding, develops your multiple aptitudes and is highly regarded by universities and employers. At all levels the Award requires commitment, over 18 months at Gold level and is designed to stretch your comfort zones. For more information checkout the intranet under extracurricular, D of E, or visit the Expedition and Adventure office on Back Quad.

Who is it open to? 4th form and aboveWhen does it happen? Activities take place throughout the year. Main expedition times are

the October half term training weekend, Gold Practice in the Easter

holiday, with Silver and Gold Assessments in the Summer holidays.

CCF

The Wellington College CCF is one of the largest contingents in the country with all 3 services (Royal Navy, Army & Royal Air Force) active every Wednesday afternoon. In addition to the core three services the college has a Royal Marines section, Drum Corps and Marching band that all fit under the umbrella of the CCF.  There is also a Cavalry activity which runs on Wednesday afternoon but is not part of CCF. The aim of the CCF is to provide a disciplined organisation within a school, so that pupils may develop powers of leadership by means of training to promote the qualities of responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness, endurance and perseverance. The College CCF is well resourced and Cadets have been to the Arctic, Norway, Mexico, Cyprus as well as camps in the UK where they have been sailing, gliding, shooting, flying and much more. For those in the 6th form the leadership opportunities are huge and look excellent on a CV showing a sustained commitment to the Cadet Corps.  The options are endless, get stuck in and the rewards are amazing.

Field Gun

The ultimate in team work, the field gun is unique in schools. The task of getting a 1/2 scale command field gun across a full scale course with 18 crew members in the shortest possible time is no mean feat. The Field Gun requires commitment, grit, physical endurance and outstanding teamwork. Wellington College Field gun crews have displayed at the British Military Tournament for the past 4 years as well as The Royal Military Academy’s Heritage Day and College Speech Days. Training takes place on Armoury field during the summer term and has been a sports option for 5th & 6th Form and an additional activity for those in the 3rd and 4th Form.

RacketsRackets is open to the whole school, and is open all the time. It is one of the most exciting, but also one of the most difficult sports in the World. No one plays Rackets until age 13, and so Wellington is a great place to start. Similar in many ways to squash, and popular with cricketers and tennis players, this sport has traditionally attracted those most gifted sports people in the school. Current students have become national champions and two OW’S have gone on to become World Champions.

Sailing

The Wellington College Sailing (WCSC) prides itself on being a fully co-educational club at Wellington for all year groups. We sail at Horseshoe Lake, which is around 10 minutes from Wellington. Places are limited due to number of boats and we operate on an invite only basis. We don’t have the provision for complete beginners, but always welcome interest from competent sailors of all year groups. Trials for those newly interested in sailing will happen in the second half of the Lent term. This will determine whether you qualify to be part of the club or would need to look at a course to hone essential skills (which we will advise on). Teresa Franz (C, U6th) is this year’s Captain. Please contact Mr Denhart at [email protected] if you have any questions. Who is it open to? All years on an invite only basis (but must be a competent sailor) When does it happen? Scuba DivingScuba Diving is open to everyone. It takes place at various points during the year in our indoor and outdoor pools and culminates in a summer trip in July. They can do courses in all the PADI dive qualifications from Open Water Referral (no experience necessary) all the way through to Divemaster. Courses consist of a theory module sat through an e-learning portal and then a series of pool sessions where the practical skills are learnt. The trip in the summer is a fantastic opportunity for students to cement their training with a week of diving every day. They stay on a live-aboard boat, and move dive sites each day to give students a variety of open water experience from shipwrecks to reefs, drift dives, deep dives etc. Over the last five years the trips have gone to Egypt and the Maldives and this year we are back to Egypt with world renowned reefs and wrecks. Building Futures is a charitable project set up to support and encourage education and learn about cultures in less economically developed regions of the world. We are looking for enthusiastic people who aren't afraid of challenges. Two projects are currently set up in Nepal. One project for women involves paying for trainers to come and teach them how to knit and make crafts that can be sold to make a profit to pay for their own academic education. Also, two schools have been supported by Wellington funds in the past, sponsoring students, teachers, and curriculum needs. Students have made cultural exchange visits to both schools. Involved students are passionate, responsible, creative, prepared to be involved in fundraising, and willing to commit to provide and develop an on-going, sustainable support program
