I am writing that essay but I emphasize that it reflects motivations that marked my personal childhood. The essay “ Onizo, the Good-Hearted” is the result of some very strong impressions that I experienced in my early childhood. These strong impressions occurred when I was about three years old when I happened to see an ox-driver pass by in my neighborhood. After seeing what I saw, I returned home and described my strong feelings about my experience to my mother. A Fairy Tale by Hideki Kubota.

There is a Japanese proverb “三の子の魂百までも” which is commonly referred to in English by: “ The child is the father of the man”. (Not a literal translation but the usual equivalent in English)It is commonly understood that a child absorbs the influence of its parents and that such an influence will remain in its soul, and model it, when it reaches adulthood and beyond. I am writing that essay but I emphasize that it reflects motivations that marked my personal childhood. The essay “ Onizo, the Good-Hearted” is the result of some very strong impressions that I experienced in my early childhood. These strong impressions occurred when I was about three years old when I happened to see an ox-driver pass by in my neighborhood. After seeing what I saw, I returned home and described my strong feelings about my experience to my mother. That deep impression from my childhood has accompanied me through my whole life and that is why I decided to commit it to paper. “ Onizo, the Good-Hearted” is the expression of that very powerful experience undergone when I was a child and I consider it to be one of my most important writings. That deep impression was burned into my children’s heart and soul and I can say that it is a feeling that, not only accompanied me, but ultimately guided my whole life. It provided me with the soothing light of love. The essay “ Child and

mother” is based on that experience and the feelings it generated.This story about the relation between the ox and its driver lays bare my own soul. The daily exchange of words and feelings between mother and child shapes the soul of the adult and molds its mind. The positive and negative feelings that have an impact on a child’s mind are sometimes absorbed, sometimes rejected. I learned from that very strong emotion that to live in this world we need to take into account and learn from animals, from plants and even from the wind, the water, and light in an almost anthropomorphic way. To deal with all those elements, to value them and to talk about them between mother and child are the basis of what “practical education” is all about. This essay is not the formulation of any particularly difficult doctrine. For oxen and men to live together calls for sincerity, honesty, mutual understanding and warm feelings. It is necessary to exhaust all the means that bring about those attitudes and those virtues.Professor Daisaku Ikeda, a devote student of Buddhism, has said that “however, difficult a problem or an obstacle, there is none that we cannot overcome through prayer”. The essay “ Practical education for mother and child” is based on that premise.

Talking with my mother.

Whenever I returned home, in the late afternoon, I always used to report all the events of the day to my mother. My house was at the end of a slope that bordered the railway tracks and at the top of the slope on the left side was my father’s public office. I climbed and descended that slope every day but never experienced any fatigue from doing it. My father was an employee at the forestry management office.

I had often seen oxen pulling heavy cartloads up the slope but one day, an ox suddenly, stopped in the middle of the slope. The cartload was probably too heavy or the ox too tired. The ox was lowing desperately and slaver was pouring out of its mouth.“ Pull, pull!” yelled the ox-driver while relentlessly beating the poor animal.“Pull harder! Pull harder!” he repeated while at the same time pushing the cart. “Useless animal!” The ox-driver’s face was red with indignation! He grasped an iron bar and started beating the animal with the bar. The ox lowed even louder out of sheer pain and trampled the soil with its hoofs although to no avail because the cart did not move an inch. At that point, the ox-driver glanced at me and realized that I was watching.When returning home, I related the whole event to my mother. She was in the kitchen preparing the evening meal. “ That ox-driver is often beating his ox” she said and I added “ Poor ox!” She continued: “ To beat his ox that way, despite the fact that the animal is doing its very best, shows that he is a cruel man”. That was the way my mother judged him. On the following day, I returned once more to the slope. The cart was still there with its load. Stones had been placed under its wheels so that it could not roll down. The ox-driver had unyoked its ox and had returned home. I sat down on the roots of a large tree, on the side of the slope and waited for the ox-driver and his ox the return. At last, the ox-driver appeared leading a big horse. The man was gently tapping the horse on its mane while softly speaking to it as if the horse understood what he was saying. He harnessed the horse to the cart, grasped its bit and started shouting “hoi, hoi” at the top of his voice. The horse began to trample with its forward legs, swinging its neck and whining loudly. The driver continued to pull at the horse’s harness and a few moments later the cart was moving up the hill.That evening, I said to my mother: “ I would like father to listen to this

also: “Both the ox and the horse seem to understand what the driver says!” One evening, as that man was driving a horse-sleigh in the midst of a strong blizzard, he collapsed in the snow. The driver protected himself from the snow and the cold, crutching against the horse’s warm body and thanks to that he saved himself. The horse seemed to be able to understand what the driver was saying.” That was undoubtedly a wonder.

together to overcome poverty, eliminate discrimination, reject prejudice and treat everyone kindly, as the foundation of their human nature in a way that brings about direct and practical results. The doctrine of professor Ikeda is receiving international attention, in schools and families, because contemporary education tends to easily forget the family, as well as the neighbor, towards whom we need to improve our gentleness, educate our hearts and become used to tend a helping hand to those who are in trouble and to those who suffer.We must cultivate the shining heart that the Buddha bestowed upon us and make tranquility and peace a reality to make it possible for people to live quietly and foster mutual respect. Professor Ikeda aims at bringing his doctrine, which is stated in his essay “Man and Education”, to all citizens of the world while overcoming any notion of dogma or religious faction.Professor Ikeda considers it a mission to console the afflicted, to give love to the suffering, to help those who have lost their way, to promote talking between children with their peers and with adults on the small occurrences that make everyday life leading the way towards a society that promotes education in all ways possible ways and forms.Every day’s occurrences should be talked about between mother and child and the morals, the virtues and the shortcomings present in those occurrences should be discussed. This is especially important nowadays because the loss of common virtues calls for a urgent resurrection of the values tha appear in that short fairy tale. It hopes to become the intellectual nourishment needed to reach those purposes.

Meaning:If an adult believes in Buddhism, his/her first duty is to revere his/her father and his/her mother and realize his/her indebtedness to them. He/she must hold the reverence to the father as laying on the highest mountain while the reverence to the mother must be as deep as the sea yet as easily reached as if it was in shallow water. This indebtedness must be kept at bottom of the heart.

同志への指針

わが未来部の太陽の友よ!

大聖人は、17歳の南條時光に報恩という人間

の最も正しい道を示された。親孝行は、特別な

Guidance for those who follow the path: Let’s walk together, under the sun, towards the future. Nichiren indicated the path when he was 17 years old. He taught that respect for our parents is nothing exceptional. To smile to them two or three times a day is quite important. We should show our gratitude, in a kind and intelligent way, every day. To grow up healthily and maturely is the best repayment to express gratitude toward our parents. To chant according to the Word will forge the mind and provide the needed strength.We pray for the health and success of all.

To Walk according to the Word

た と え ば く ろ が ね ( 鉄 ) を よ く よ く き た

(鍛)へばきず(疵)のあらわるるがごとし

石はやけばはあい(灰)となる金(こがね)

Meaning:(When encountering difficulties) For example, when carefully forging iron whatever defect was hidden inside will appear on the surface. When burning stones they will ultimately turn to ashes but if they contain gold the pure gold will come out.

同志への指針

妙法の信受する声明は(金)である。乗り越え

られない難など絶対にない。

宿命転換の仏法である。障魔は、我らの信心を

試しているのだ。

Guidance for our friends.The priest’s chant at Buddhist ceremonies is a golden voice.There is no difficulty that cannot be overcome by it. Life and its fate

will be changed through that practice. The hurdles appear only to test our faith.Ascetic exercises aim at overcoming fate and forge our resolve.It will change all things and bring good luck and felicity.Those of our friends who face adversity, will, throughlistening to the sacred chants, rekindle their courage and the future will again shine brilliantly before their eyes.

The Great Nichiren said that if we long for peace, we have to pray to the North, the South, the East and the West. We are surrounded by suffering, by drama and unhappiness and it is unconceivable that only we alone would be happy.

The real mission of religion is to strive for the happiness of all, in all countries and in all societies, that is, to open the door of happiness to everyone.

“Onizo, the Good-Hearted” by Hideki Kubota

The ox was huffing and puffing, pulling a fully loaded coal cart. Onizo, the ox-driver, was also sweating profusely and sweat was filling his eyes and blurring his vision.

The sun was shining so intensely that it made the white road look even whiter under the blinding light.

The ox was dizzy and was pulling the cart alternatively towards the right and left side of the road.

Onizo, was getting very angry and was whipping mercilessly the poor animal while yelling at it: “Don’t tumble that way! Pull the cart straight.”

The ox lowed: “Moo, moo!”Then, suddenly, it furiously hastened its pace and pulled

the cart, with great noise, towards a wooden shrine that stood on the side of the road.

About ten people were there, joining hands and forming a large circle around an imposing tree.

“Hey, hey, where are you going? This is the wrong way! Return to the road immediately”

Onizo was getting very angry and lashed the ox with all his strength. The ox looked at him and lowed even harder; “ Moo, moo!“ but it refused to move even a single step.

Onizo was getting dizzy and while he continued lashing the ox mercilessly he ultimately collapsed at the foot of the tree.

The ox turned around the base of the tree and feeling refreshed by a cool breeze closed its eyes and seemed to say:

“Well, my dear master, you made a fool of me. If you enter the shrine, god will make you pay dearly for your offense. You may even die as chastisement. If God does not chastise you then, I will do it ,instead.”

Onizo woke from his swoon, stood up and intended to lash the ox again but he was so tired that he had no strength left.

The ox did not move an inch. Onizo took his head in his hands and crouched down and said:

“ Damn you, you have a new fit of rambunctious behavior” Onizo was distressed.

Onizo’s ox was once in a while given to such stubborn behavior and when that happened he kept totally immobile and utterly disregarded both the lashes and the orders of its master. That is why Onizo gave it the name “Gonta” which means: Unruly character. Onizo muttered: “Nothing to do about that, but, even so, it is my ox!” .

He lay down near the roots of the tree and dozed off.

Onizo remembered that 30 years had passed since he had started working as an ox-driver. He had inherited “Gonta” from his father who had the same occupation. One day, during a strong snow blizzard his father collapsed and died on the spot but before that incident he always used to say: “ If I die, you continue to work with Gonta”.

Onizo was very happy about that and he cared a lot for his “Gonta” often wiping its body clean with straw. Since the death of Onizo’s father “Gonta” had become his property. He was about 15 years old when that happened.

“Moo”That is what Onizo was recalling while feeding Gonta

some green leaves he had collected in the bush. It was like if he was speaking with his ox and gently telling it: “ You are no good, you are of no use!”.

The ox’s eyes had been shining brightly but they suddenly became quite dull and although “Gonta” had now recovered from its fit.

Onizo continued :” You are much older than me because you worked with my father. You must be tired of all that work, aren’t you?”

Onizo got up and started wiping the sweat from Gonta’s body. They were still sweating abundantly but continued their way along the trail that was bordering the valley and the dales. A cool breeze was now gently refreshing them and Gonta, gently moving its tail, seemed to enjoy it.

Onizo continued to mutter: “Until when will you be able to work? You have already passed the age of pulling carts. I would like to buy a young ox but I need, first, to spare some money. So I want you to keep working for a while and help me with it.”

Gonta’s tail did not move anymore and its hair had lost all its shine taking the hue of dry straw. That was, of course, a clear

sign of aging.Gonta was listening to Onizo’s muttering and was lowing

so hard that it nearly moved the surrounding thickets. At the same time Gonta started pulling the cart faster and faster.

“Ho! Ho! Shouted Onizo. If you keep running that fast you are soon become totally exhausted.”

Onizo tried to slow Gonta’s pace but the ox utterly ignored Onizo’s injunctions and kept pulling as hard as it could.

However, as Onizo had predicted, Gonta was getting utterly exhausted and began to slow down despite having rested a while at the shrine.

Gonta was now moving so slowly that it gave the impression that it wanted to eat some of the grass that bordering the mountain trail. The ox was huffing and puffing and pulling but despite this it was pulling the cart very slowly. Finally, they reached the ridge despite de fact that the trail was difficult and winding sharply.

When they finally reached the top Gonta became again unable to move, as Onizo had predicted.

“ I told you” said Onizo. “You idiot, egg plant, pumpkin you are really useless and I will kill you!”

Onizo was really very angry and with the shovel that he used for unloading the coal, he started hitting Gonta as hard as he could. “You see, you see!” Onizo was out of his wits and was hitting Gonta all over the head, the belly and the rump.

Gonta started lowing so loudly that it could be heard all over the mountain and the poor ox kicked Onizo with its hind hoofs so strongly that it sent Onizo flying. Onizo felt guilty and giving up his rage decided to wait but he realized that he was in real trouble. It was impossible to work under those conditions. Onizo left the ox and the cart as it stood and sat on a rock on the border of the trail thinking about the situation.

Under such conditions it would be hard even to do even half of the work he had to do. The sun was already declining and they had barely done two round-trips between the coalmine and the coal-shop in town. This had, recently, happened several times. Gonta would suddenly stop listening to its master and the pace at which it was pulling the cart would getting slower and slower. Several years before, when Gonta was strong, they used to make five round-trips between the coalmine and the store in town and there had even be instances in which they had made seven round-trips. But nowadays, Gonta was exhausted after only one round-trip.

Onizo remembered the way his father dealt with the ox. There had been instances when a wheel of the cart got stuck in a groove on the road. His father would then take a stick and club the ox until the cart got out of the groove and started moving again. When that happened, Onizo would feel a lot of pity for the ox and used to cry. Ox-drivers are known for beating the animal until it finally listened to them.

Up to now, Onizo had always felt pity for the ox and did not lash it too hard! But today was different. He had only done half the day’s work and he was getting very worried.

He said to himself: “If that is so, it seems that I cannot make myself clear and Gonta is making a fool of me. Let’s try to lash harder”

Onizo went into the woods and with a machete cut some branches to make a heavy stick. He then returned to his ox and started beating it with all his might. Gonta was utterly surprised. Being beaten in such a way the ox went berserk. With its hind hoofs it kicked the cart so hard that it turned over and even broke the leather leash that was binding it to the cart. The cart and its load rolled down in the valley with considerable noise. Seeing this Onizo was utterly dumbfounded. Gonta felt that the load had lightened a lot and started pushing backwards, its mouth flushed with slaver.

Onizo did not give up and descended to the bottom of the valley to look for his cart but the deep river had swallowed it entirely. Onizo tried to see through the water but only saw the reflection of his face but no trace of the cart.

At that moment, Onizo was overcome by sheer despair started to shout “Father, Father” and his father’s face appeared on the surface of the water. In fact, it was Onizo’s own face that had now become an exact copy of his father’s face. It was the face of a typical ox-driver. It was frightening! Even a thin beard had appeared on the side of his face. Onizo’s father had died on that trail during a snow-blizzard.

Onizo felt that he had met his father again. His anger had totally subsided. He blessing had even touched his ox, Gonta stood calmly behind him and a deep feeling of peace enveloped both of them.

However, on the next day, they started quarrelling again, Gonta did no pay any attention to what Onizo was saying and Onizo continued to spray merciless lashes on the back of his ox. Both of them were getting older, and despite all their efforts, they got tired faster and moved at an ever slower pace. They could hardly make the daily three round-trips that Onizo was now planning.

They were getting slower and slower by the day.The coal merchant in town was very irritated and told

Onizo with a growling voice: “If you do not make enough round-trips my coal supply will get smaller and smaller and I will have to find another ox-driver, especially, when winter comes my clients will need more coal”.

Onizo replied: “ I am doing my best, as I always did. Please, don’t take my work away”. He said that bowing very low and literally supplicating the shop-owner. If you contract another ox-driver, it will be catastrophic for me and I will become unable to make a living.

Onizo punched Gonta in the nose with his fist.“ You are utterly useless! Through your laziness I am going

to lose my work and my living. The shop-owner threatens to fire me. Your negligence is the culprit”. Onizo kicked Gontan in the belly but its skin was as tight as a drum and his foot bounced back and turned him over. Onizo’s rage increased even more.

“ You lazy and negligent beast, from now on, I will make you pull that cart from early morning to late evening.”

From that day on Gonta’s life became very hard. In the morning, starting with the first cock’s crow until late in the evening, when the owl hoots, poor Gonta did not have any rest until the time of going home.

From the shining of the morning starUntil the shining of the evening starI continue along the winding mountain trailAnd only after passing the ridgeDo I see light.

Onizo kept singing that song on the way back, in the evening, whenever he felt sleepy. His voice resounded through the evening air. Gonta knew its driver very well and whenever he started singing the ox could slow its pace and enjoy the moment.

Onizo and Gonta kept going back and forth, carrying coal, from morning to evening and became able again to make up to five round-trips a day.

Both were tired and when winter announced itself snow began to fall gently on their heads. Winter was coming! To carry coal in the winter was much harder because the cart was now replaced by a sledge and to pull a sledge is, of course, much harder. In fact, to pull the sledge requires almost three times the strength needed to pull a cart.

The mountain, the fields, the hills had all become snow-white. Gonta had no strength left to be riotous. Even Onizo was in no mood to whip Gonta. All his strength was used in keeping the sledge moving.

He muttered: “ A little more patience! Spring will come and then I will have enough money to buy another strong and youthful ox. Until then I have to go along with Gonta, but if I can do even one round-trip more a day, I will be able to spare more money”.

Onizo was always muttering to encourage himself.Gonta, totally absorbed in its effort to pull the sledge, was

breathing heavily and had no leisure to listen to Onizo’s mumbling.As evening came, the moon was brightly reflecting on the

white snow.Onizo mumbled to himself:“ I will only be able to use this ox until spring. Nobody will

be willing to buy such a lazy, weak and old ox. The only thing to do with it is to eat it. When spring arrives I will kill it.” Gonta could not hear him because the snow was covered with ice and noisily cracking under its hoofs which made it impossible to hear anything.

“ We will do two more trips this evening” muttered Onizo.If they could do two more round-trips, they would

complete seven trips today. The more trips they made, the more money Onizo would earn and that lifted his spirits.

On the last trip’s return, the sledge got stuck on the mountain trail. At the same time, a blizzard made it almost impossible to keep one’s eyes open. After only a few steps forward in that heavy snow, Gonta had changed from a black ox to a white ox. Another hundred steps forward and the snow had become knee deep. When climbing the steep slope that led to the ridge of the mountain the sledge got stuck.

mouth was breathing very heavily but still trying to get the sledge moving.

“ What happened Gonta? A last effort, please! Pull, pull!”Onizo was yelling at the top of his voice while Gonta was

pulling has hard as it could but the sledge did not move an inch. It was really impossible to move it because it had sunk deep into the snow.

Even so, Onizo was not willing to give up. Only another one hundred steps to the summit! From there on it is downslope to the city. Let’s gather our strength and if this sledge moves we will be able to reach the city.

At that point, Onizo intended to clean the snow that had accumulated on the sledge and grasped and iron bar to break the ice that covered the top of the sledge. But then, Onizo, in his effort to make Gonta move, used the same iron bar to hit his ox several times .

Moo!Moo!Gonta lowed, desperate and in pain, and collapsed on the

knees of its hind-legs.Onizo yelled: “ You forgot that I brought you up gently!

Don’t forget it and from now on do your work and move that sledge immediately”. Onizo, hit his ox one more time. He thought that Gonta was again not listening.

Gonta took one more deep gasp and collapsed in the snow. Onizo was astonished! He loosened Gonta’s yoke and started rubbing its large body with straw. Gonta had always enjoyed to be rubbed with straw. Gonta always half-closed its eyes to show its pleasure but this time Gonta looked like a snow statue and continued to gasp heavily.

Gonta had not willingly collapsed in the snow. Gonta was old and Onizo had forced it to work from early morning to late in the evening.

“ Gonta! No excuse! I made you work until you collapsed, but if you didn’t do so I would not be able to buy another ox. To make a living I had to make you work more than any other ox, pulling this very heavy loads and as punishment you kicked me with your hooves.”

While saying that Onizo continued wiping the snow off the head of his ox. The ox kept looking at him with its large eyes wide open. Then tears started falling from its eyes. The blizzard seeming to be aiming at them and strengthened to the point of making it even hard to breath. Onizo became afraid and clinging to Gonta’s neck intended to protect himself from the blowing snow.

Then a voice said: “Master, you may soon be going to the Buddha”

“ Whose voice is that?” shouted Onizo at the top of his lungs.

“ I am Gonta, your ox!”“ What? Gonta? Since when can you speak?”Onizo, utterly astonished, embraced Gonta’s head looking

at its expression.“Master, I have always been talking to you but you never

paid any attention. Now, at last, you are hearing me.”Gonta, looked very happy now and started licking Onizo’s

face.From high in the sky, the Buddha was calling them: “Both

of you, come here, come here!”“Dear Master, the time to part has arrived. But before we

part I have a last wish!”What is it? Speak! Anything that is in my power I will do!“ Where will we end up? Will it be in Paradise or in Hell.Wherever it is, could you not tell me where it will be?”“ You are going to Paradise! You have worked very hard! I

am the one who will go to the Hell. I have abused you! If it had not

been for me you would have lived much longer. What is more, the owner of the coal-shop will follow me in Hell because he menaced me saying that if I did not bring more coal I would loose my job. That is why I had no other choice than to have you carry more and more coal”.

“ There is no time for evil speaking, Master! My eyes are dimming. When I meet the Buddha, I will ask him to let you come to paradise”

From there on Onizo had no notion of how much time had passed. When he came to his senses he realized that his friends, the other ox-drivers, had put him in a warm bed hidden in some clouds.

They said to him: “ That was really dangerous. If some more time had passed you would have frozen to death. It is thanks to your ox that you are here because it i the is armth of its body that protected you from freezing”

“ Where is my ox?”“Oh! It died! Even when dead, the warmth of its body kept

protecting you from the blizzard. It did not abandon you and even after dying it kept taking care of you. Well, just buy another ox and that will take care of the problem.”

“ That really saved me! Thanks God! Let’s congratulate Him”

While saying so, the ox-drivers started drinking.Onizo had fully recovered but could not forget Gonta.Gonta had frozen to death and Onizo build made a

cenotaph on the side of the mountain trail where Gonta had died and he always made his reverence when passing in front of it.

One should not whip an ox. It is important to treat oxen well. That ox had worked hard for Onizo’s sake.

The other ox-drivers respected Onizo his thoughts. The good team relation between the ox and its driver

improves efficiency.

As Onizo’s work improved a lot, he continued to stop at Gonta’s cenotaph and thanked it for that.

Onizo’s face had become very serene. In fact, he looked as serene as a Buddha. From then on people called him Onizo, the Good-Hearted.

However, despite this, many ox-drivers continue to mistreat their oxen as before. They continue to whip and hit the poor oxen en with sticks and as a result the oxen continue to die of hardship and exhaustion.

「三つ子の魂百までも」。日本のことわざにある。子どもの心は、幼い頃に親の人格の投影を受けることでつくられる。私は現在童話を書いているが、作品のいずれのモチ-フも幼少期に培われた。このエッセイのデ-タとする「仏の鬼蔵」も私が幼少期に強烈

な印象を受けた体験が基となった。三歳のころ、ある夕方、「牛ひきと牛」のくり広げた光景を目撃した。家に帰り、母にそれを語ったことも強烈に一言ひとことが心に焼き付いた。同作品はこの実体験の印象を幼い心の中でふくらませ、成人になって執筆に至るまで、その感動は私を支え続けた。「仏の鬼蔵」は私の諸作の中で最も印象に残る作品の一つで、私の代表作といってもよい。この自薦の思いやりの強さは、私の幼い心にこの恐ろしくも悲しいそして心を打つ一瞬ともいえる短い出来事は、私を驚かせたばかりか、私の全人生を導く「教え」となって、私を励まし、日々の出来事に感謝する人の道を目覚めさせた。私の心に人間愛の灯をともしてくれた。私の体験した貴い「子と母」の記録として知っていただきたい、という一念から、同エッセイを提出するに至った。牛ひきと牛のやりとりは私の魂を吐露したものだ。毎日のさまざまな出来事を子どもとお母さんが語り合うことは、子どもの魂を培い、人格を形成する教育の場である。子どもが目撃する光景は、時には優しく、時には荒々しく、子どもには受け入れがたいことも多い。子どもとお母さんが語り合うことで、目撃した光景に入り込み、そこに登場する人や動物、植物、時には風、水、光といった自然を擬人化した万物と共に生活する術を学ばなければならない。毎日の出来事を大切に語り合い、感じ合うことこそ、「子どもとお母さんの実践教育」の揺籃となる。

この物語は特別難しい教義の中から生まれたのではない。誠実に生き、お互いの真に触れ、理解し合うという、温かな気持ちを持つことで、「人と牛が共に生きる」世界を紡いだ。「誠実な態度で、真を尽くし、生き抜く努力をすること」。池田大作先生は仏教徒の立場から、「祈ることによって、乗り越えられない困難などというものは絶対にない」と述べている。この心の基を培うことが、「子どもとお母さんの実践教育」である。

池田大作先生は、各国に創価学会の教会、集いを作り、

各地で「人の道」を説き続けている。池田先生の教育論は、

貧困、差別、偏見をこえて人として互いにいたわり、大切

にする「ひととしての基」を培う大切さを教えるものとし

て、最も効果を上げ、国際的に注目されている。学校で、

家庭で、世界中で池田先生の教えに耳を傾け、現代の教育

で忘れられがちな家族と隣人に対する優しさと思いやりを

心のなかで培い、深めて、困っている人、悩んでいる人に

手を差し伸べて励ましてあげよう。仏さまからいただいた

心を輝かせて、豊饒な安寧の世を実現させて、みんな和気

あいあいとお互いを大切に、敬う生活をしよう。池田先生

が心を込めてお説きになる「人間と教育」論の教えを糧に

の形成を、池田先生の教えを受けた者の使命としたい。

日々、生活の出来事を、子どもとお母さんが語り合うこと

を通して、モラル、道徳の荒廃した現代社会の活性化を図

り、短い文章にまとめ、親子の心の糧としよう。

 牛は石炭をいっぱいに積んだ荷車を引いて、フ‒フ‒と激しくあえいでいます。牛ひきの鬼蔵の目の中にも汗がだらだらと流れこんできて、目がかすんで見えません。太陽がカンカン照りつけて、白い道が真っ白に光っています。 牛がフラフラになって引くので、荷車は道の左はしによったり、右はしによったりします。「このゴンタのろくでなし!。もっとしっかり引っぱれや」

鬼蔵は怒って牛のしりをむちでぴしりとたたきました。「モモ‒ッ」牛は、たけだけしい声でなくと、道のかたわらにある小さな神

社の木立ちの中へガラガラと荷車の音を響かせて、かけ足で入って行きました。そして、十人のおとなが手をつないで輪になったほどの大きな木かげをつくっている大木の下で止りました。

「おいおい、どこへ行くんだ。方向がちがうぞ。さっさと道へ出ろ」鬼蔵はすっかり怒って、むちで力まかせに牛のしりやらはらや

ら、もう全身をめちゃくちゃにたたきましたが、牛は目をむいて「モモ‒ッ、モモ‒ッ」とすごい声でなくだけで、少しも動きません。鬼蔵は、暑さでふらふらになっていたところへ、力いっぱい牛

をたたき続けたのでへたばってしまい、大木の根のところに倒れてしまいました。牛は、木立ちをくぐり抜けてくる涼しい風にふかれて、気持ち

よさそうに目を細めています。「ご主人さまをよくもばかにしたな。神社の中へかってに入っ

てきたら、神さまのばちがあたるぞ。おまえなんか、ばちがあたって死んでしまえばいいんだ。よ‒し、わしが神様にかわってこらしめてやる」鬼蔵はふらふらしながら立ち上がると、むちでぴしぴし牛をた

たきましたが、疲れているので力がはいりません。牛が一センチも動かないので、鬼蔵は頭をかかえてしゃがんでしまいました。

「こいつめ、またゴンタを始めたな」鬼蔵はうんざりしました。鬼蔵の牛は、時々かんしゃくをおこ

すと、動かなくなります。そんな時はどんなにむちでたたいても、主人のいうことをききません。だから、鬼蔵はこの牛に「ゴンタ」という名前をつけたのです。ゴンタとは、いうことをきかないあばれ者の意味です。しかたがないので、鬼蔵はゴンタのきげんがなおるのを待つことにしました。

「それにしても、わしも年をとったものだ」

鬼蔵は、木の根っこのところにごろりと横になってつぶやきました。鬼蔵は牛ひきになってから、三十年もたっていることに気がつ

きました。ゴンタは牛ひきをしていた父からもらったものです。鬼蔵の父は、牛ひきをしていましたが、ふぶきの日に雪の中で疲れて倒れ、そのまま、こごえ死んでしまいました。

「わしが死んだら、ゴンタをおまえにやろう」父は鬼蔵にいつもいっていました。鬼蔵はそれが楽しみで、ゴンタのかあらだをわらでこすって、きれいにしてやりました。

父が死んだ日から、ゴンタは鬼蔵のものになったのです。鬼蔵がまだ十五歳の時でした。

「モ‒ッ」鬼蔵が緑の葉の茂りを見上げながら思い出していると、ゴンタ

が鬼蔵に話しかけるようになきました。「この役立たず」鬼蔵はそうどなろうとしましたが、さっきまでぎらぎら光って

いたゴンタの目が、しぼんだようにしょぼしょぼしています。ゴンタのきげんがなおったのです。

「おまえは、わしよりずっと年をとっているな。なにしろ、父といっしょに働いていたんだから。さぞかし、仕事がつらかろう」鬼蔵は立ち上がると、あせをびっしょりとかいたゴンタのから

だをわらでふいてやりました。あせをかいたままにしておくと、谷や沢のそばの道をとおる時、冷たい風に吹かれてかぜをひいてしまうからです。ゴンタは、うれしそうに尾をゆっくりとふっています。

「おまえは、いつまで働けるかな。おまえは荷車を引っぱるには、もう年をとりすぎた。若い牛を買いたいけれど、もうちょっと金をためんとな。おまえにうんと働いてもらって、金をためてから買うことにしよう」ゴンタの毛は、つやが失われてパサパサになっており、まるで

わらのような感じです。これは年よりのしょうこです。

鬼蔵のつぶやきを聞いて、ゴンタは「モモ‒ッ」と、木立ちがふるえるほどのなき声をたてると、荷車を引きずってものすごいスピ‒ドで道を走り始めました。 

「お‒い、待ってくれ。そんなに走ったら、じきにへたばるぞ!」鬼蔵はあわててゴンタを追いかけましたが、ゴンタは鬼蔵の言葉にすっかりつむじをまげてしまい、どんどん走り続けます。

でも、鬼蔵がいったとおり、ゴンタは少し走っただけで、すっかりへたばってしまいました。これでは、神社で休んでも、なんにもなりません。道くさをくったようなものです。ゴンタはフ‒フ‒とあえいで、荷車をノロノロひっぱりました。

やがて、一里山にさしかかりました。山道が一里もぐねぐねと続く難所です。鬼蔵が心配したとおり、ゴンタは一里山の頂上にもうちょっとというところで、動けなくなってしまいました。

「だから、いったじゃないか。このトンチキ、マヌケ、ナス、カボチャ。おまえみたいな役立たずは、わしが殺してやる」鬼蔵は怒りのあまり、荷車に積んであった石炭をおろすために

使うスコップで、思いきりゴンタをたたきました。「コンニャロ、コンニャロ」鬼蔵は気が狂ったようにゴンタの頭、腹、しりをめちゃめちゃ

にたたきます。ゴンタは「モモ‒ッ、モモ‒ッ」と山にとどろくさけびをあげる

と、後ろ足をはねあげて鬼蔵をけり飛ばそうとします。鬼蔵は、すねをしたたかけられて、うずくまってしまいました。鬼蔵はすっかり困ってしまいました。これでは仕事になりませ

ん。急な山道のとちゅうでフ‒フ‒いって目をむいているゴンタと荷車をそのままにして、鬼蔵はかたわらの岩にこしをおろして考えこみました。

この調子では、予定の荷物の半分も運べません。もう、太陽が傾きかかっているというのに、一日で炭坑と町の石炭売り屋の間を五回往復する予定が、二回しか往復できません。最近、急にゴンタが鬼蔵のいうことをきかなくなり、荷車を引っぱる速度もおそく

なりました。なん年か前までは、炭坑と町との間をかならず一日五回往復しました。調子のよい時は、七回往復したこともありました。今日は、とうとう一里山でへたばってしまいました。鬼蔵は父の牛のあつかい方を思い出しました。荷車の車輪が、みぞの中に落ち込んで動けなくなったことがありました。父は牛をこん棒で思いきりたたいてふるい立たせ、ようやく車輪をみぞの中から道の上へあげ、荷車を動かしました。鬼蔵は、たたかれているゴンタがかわいそうで、そばで泣いて見ていたものです。牛ひきは牛をよくなぐりつけて、いうことをきかせようとします。今まで、鬼蔵は牛がかわいそうなので、あまりひどくはなぐりませんでした。しかし、きょうの鬼蔵はちがいます。予定をしていた荷物の半分も運べないので、怒りのかたまりのようになっていました。

「よし、なぐり方がたりないために、ゴンタはわしをばかにしているのかもしれない。もっとなぐってみよう」鬼蔵は森の中に入ると、ナタで木の枝をはらい、こん棒をつく

りました。そして、力をこめてゴンタを打ちすえました。ゴンタは驚きました。太いこん棒で打たれてとびあがりました。痛さのあまり、後ろの両足でめちゃめちゃに荷車をけとばしておばれました。すると荷車とゴンタをつないでいたかわのひもがぷっつりと切れて、石炭をいっぱいに積んだ荷車はガラガラと山道をころがっていき、そのまま谷あいにドサ‒ンと落ちていきました。鬼蔵はこん棒を持ったまま、ぼうぜんとしました。ゴンタも、急にからだが軽くなったので、よだれをだらだらたらしながら、後ろをふしぎそうにふりかえって見ています。鬼蔵は荷車をあきらめきれずに、谷におりていってみましたが、荷車は深い川にのみこまれて見えません。川の底をのぞきこんでみますが、水面に鬼蔵の顔がうつるばかりです。

その時、鬼蔵は思わず「おとうちゃん」と叫びました。水面に、なつかしい父の顔がうつっていたからです。

でも、よく見ると、それは父ではなく、鬼蔵の顔でした。鬼蔵

もいつの間にか、父とそっくりの顔になっていました。牛ひきの顔です。ひげが顔いちめんにはえて、こわい感じです。鬼蔵の父は、ふぶきの日にこの山道でこごえ死んだのです。鬼蔵は父に出会ったような気持になり、すっかり怒りがさめま

した。恩蔵はだまってゴンタのたずなをひくと、ゴンタもしょんぼりしてとぼとぼと鬼蔵の後ろにしたがいました。

でも、翌日から鬼蔵とゴンタは、また、けんかをしながら新しい荷車を引きました。ゴンタは、あいかわらず、鬼蔵のいうことをききません。鬼蔵は一日中、ゴンタをむちでたたいて、速い速度で荷車を引かせようとします。ところが、鬼蔵もゴンタも年をとってきたのですぐ疲れてしまって、荷物は予定の三分の一も運べません。ゴンタの歩みは、一日一日と遅くなる一方です。町の石炭を売る店では、鬼蔵の運ぶ石炭の量が減ってくるので、

いらいらしています。「これ以上、石炭を運ぶ量が少なくなったら、ほかの牛ひきに

たのむよ。これから冬になったら、お客さんはもっとたくさんの石炭を買いにくるだろうからね」店の主人は、鬼蔵にガミガミと怒りました。「一生けんめいに石炭を運びますから、私にいままでどおり、仕事をさせてください」鬼蔵は店の主人にペコペコ頭をさげて頼みました。ほかの牛ひ

きに石炭運びの仕事をとられたらたいへんです。鬼蔵は生活できなくなってしまいます。鬼蔵は、ゴンタの鼻っぱしらをげんこつで思いっ切りなぐりま

した。「このおいぼれの役立たずめ。おまえのおかげで、わしは仕事

をやめさせられるところだった。おまえは仕事をさぼってるな」鬼蔵はゴンタの大きな腹をけとばしました。腹のかわはたいこ

のかわのようにぴんと張っているので、鬼蔵の足ははねかえされて、はずみで鬼蔵はひっくりかえってしまいました。鬼蔵はますます怒って、

 鬼蔵は歌いながら、夜道のねむけをさまします。鬼蔵の歌声がぷっつりととだえた時は、鬼蔵が歩きながらねむっているのです。ゴンタはそのことをちゃんと知っているので、歩みの速度を遅くして楽をすることにしていました。 鬼蔵とゴンタは昼も夜も石炭を運び続けたので、なんとか一日五回、炭坑と町の間を往復することができました。 疲れきった二人の頭上に、雪がまいおりてきました。冬がきたのです。冬の石炭運びは、もっとつらいものです。雪で埋もれた山道をソリを引いて運びます。ソリを引っぱる時は、荷車を引くときの三倍も力がいります。山も畑も一面の銀世界です。ギシギシと雪をきしませて、重いソリはすすみます。ゴンタはあばれる元気もありません。鬼蔵はゴンタをむちでうつ力もなく、ソリにつかまって歩くのがやっとです。

「もうちょっとのしんぼうだ。春がくれば、若くて力持ちの牛を買う金がたまる。それまでゴンタをこき使って、一回でも多く石炭を運んで金をもうけよう」 鬼蔵は自分を励ますようにひとりごとをいいました。ゴンタは雪にめりこむソリを引いてハ‒ハ‒と大きな息づかいをしているので、鬼蔵のひとりごとが聞こえません。 夜になると、月の光が雪に照りかえり、あたりはこうこうとかがやいています。 「この牛を使うのも春までだ。こんなおいぼれ牛じゃ、買い手もなかろう。生かしておいたらかいばを食うので、春がきたら殺してしまおう」 鬼蔵は、また、ひとりごとをいいました。でも、ゴンタには聞えません。重いソリがこおりついた雪を踏みくだくパリパリ、パリパリという音が、鬼蔵の声をかき消したのです。

「今夜は、あと二回運ばせよう」あと二回往復すると、きょう一日で七回も運んだことになりま

す。運べば運ぶほどもうけになるから、鬼蔵は上きげんです。最後の一回を運んで帰るとちゅう、ソリは一里山にさしかかり

ました。そのころから、急に目をあけていられないほど、激しくふぶき始めました。二十歩歩むうちに、黒牛のゴンタはふきつける雪で白牛になってしまいました。百歩歩むうちに、雪は鬼蔵のひざのあたりまでつもりました。頂上近くの急な坂道のとちゅうで、とうとうソリは止まってしまいました。ゴンタが、真っ白に雪をかぶった顔をふるわせてあらあらしく

息をつき、よだれをたれて目をむいています。「どうした、ゴンタ。もうひとがんばりだ。ひっぱれ」鬼蔵が叫ぶと、ゴンタは必死になって両足で雪をかいています

が、ソリはびくともしません。動かないはずです。ソリはすっかり雪の中に埋もれてしまったからです。

それでも、鬼蔵はあきらめきれません。もう百歩も進むといただき

です。それから町までの道は下り坂です。勢いをつけてソリをす

べらせていけば、町にたどりつけるはずです。そこで、鬼蔵は、ソリの上につもった雪をかきわけて、鉄棒を取り出しました。この鉄棒は、ソリについた雪のかたまりをつき落とすために積んであったものです。鬼蔵は、ゴンタをふるいたたせるために鉄棒で数回なぐりまし

た。「モ‒ッ、モ‒ッ」ゴンタはかなしげになくと、後ろ足をがっくりとおって雪の中

に座りこんでしまいました。

「今までおまえをやしなってきた主人のおん

恩を忘れたのか。さあ、

仕事をさぼらず、さっさとソリを引け」鬼蔵は鉄棒でもう一つなぐりました。ゴンタがまた主人のいう

ことをきかなくなったと、鬼蔵は思ったからです。ゴンタは大きくあえぐと、どさりと雪の中に倒れてしまいまし

た。鬼蔵はびっくりしてゴンタをソリからはずすと、大きなからだをわらでこすってやりました。ゴンタは、わらでからだをこすられるのが大好きでした。いつもなら、目をしょぼしょぼさせて喜ぶのですが、ゴンタは雪ダルマのような顔になって、苦しそうにあえぐばかりです。ゴンタが倒れたのも、むりはありません。ゴンタは年をとって

いるうえに、鬼蔵に昼も夜もぶっとおしに働かされたからです。「ゴンタ、すまない。おまえが倒れるまでこき使ったわしを許

しておくれ。おまえに働いてもらわなければ、わしは生活できなかった。わしの生活のために、おまえのどの牛よりも重い荷物を引かせてしまった。そのばつに、わしをひずめでけとばしておくれ」鬼蔵が牛の顔から雪をはらい落としながらいうと、牛は大きな

目でじっと鬼蔵をみつめました。そしてポロポロとなみだ

した。牛と牛ひきをめがけて、息もつけないほどの激しいふぶきがゴ‒

ゴ‒と音をたてておそいかかりました。鬼蔵はおそろしくなって、ゴンタのずんぐりしたくびに夢中でしがみつきました。

「ご主人さま、おいら、ほとけ

仏 さまのところへいけるかな」と、だ

れかがいいました。「その声は、だれだ」と、鬼蔵はふぶきの中で叫びました。「牛のゴンタですよ」「あれっ、おまえ、いつから話ができるようになったのだい」鬼蔵はびっくりして、だきかかえたゴンタの顔をのぞきこみま

した。「ずっと前から、ご主人さまに話しかけていましたよ。でも、

いま、やっとご主人さまに、おいらの声が聞こえたんだね」ゴンタは、うれしそうに鬼蔵の顔や手をペロペロとなめました。「空の上で、仏さまがおいらにおいでおいでと、手まねいてい

るよ。ご主人さま、おいらはいよいよお別れだ。おいらは最後に一つだけお願いがある」

「なんだね、いってごらん。わしにできることなら、なんでもするよ」

「おいらは、ごくらく

極楽へいけるか、それともじご く

地獄におとされるのか、

さっぱりわからない。どちらにいくのか、教えてくれないかな」「そりゃ、おまえはきっと極楽へいけるよ。よく働いたものな。地獄へおちるのは、このわしじゃ。おまえをこき使って、つぶしてしまった。主人がわしでなければ、おまえはもっと長生きできた牛だったけどな。それに、石炭屋の主人も、わしといっしょにきっと地獄へおちるぞ。もっと石炭を運ばないのなら仕事をとりあげると、わしをおどしたんだ。それで、わしはしかたなしに、おまえにむりに石炭を運ばせたんだ」

「人の悪口をいっているひまはない。もう目がかすんできた。おいら、仏さまにあったら、ご主人も極楽へこられるように頼んでやるさ」

それから、どれくらい時間がすぎたのか、わからない。鬼蔵が

気がついた時は、牛ひき仲間に雪の中から助け出されて、あたたかいふとんの中に寝せられていました。

「あぶないところだったな。もう少しでこごえ死ぬところだった。牛にひっついていたので、牛のからだのぬくもりで助かったんだよ」と、牛ひき仲間はいいました。

「牛はどうした―?」「死んだよ。まだ、からだにぬくもりが残っていたけど、ふぶ

きの中で鬼蔵さんを助け出すのが、せいいっぱいだった。牛はおきざりにしたので、死んじゃったよ。また新しい牛を買えばいいさ」

「助かって本当によかったなあ」

「よかった、よかった。おいわ

祝いだ」

牛ひき仲間たちは、そういって酒もりを始めました。鬼蔵はすっかり元気になりましたが、いつまでもゴンタのこと

が忘れられません。ゴンタがこごえ死んだ山道にお墓をたてて、牛をひいて通るたびにおがみました。牛をむちでたたくようなことは、しませんでした。牛をやさしくいたわって大切にしたので、牛は鬼蔵によくなつき、よく仕事をしました。牛ひき仲間も、鬼蔵を尊敬しました。鬼蔵は牛と人から好かれて、牛ひきの親方になりました。鬼蔵は親方になってからも、ゴンタの墓の前でおがみ続けまし

た。鬼蔵は仏さまのようなやさしい顔に変わりました。それで、人々は、仏の鬼蔵と呼びました。

けれども、鬼蔵の下で使われている多くの牛ひきは、あいかわらず鬼のようなひげづらをして、牛をむちやこん棒でたたいてこき使っていました。牛はつぎつぎに疲れはてて死んでいきました。
