President’s Message

Salon Jury

On behalf of the VIGEX Committee of Management I would like to thank all the entrants who supported this salon,

the first digital salon we have run. VIGEX has been a print-only salon since its inception in 1980, conducted every

two years. With the growing popularity of digital salons around the world our print numbers have been falling

and it has become uneconomical for VIGEX to continue while running just one salon every 2 years.

We therefore looked at conducting a VIGEX salon every year, alternating between print and digital projected

image formats. The strong support for this initial digital salon has been very encouraging and indicates that our

print/ digital salon pattern should be maintained.

In addition to the entrants I also thank our sponsors, judges, all Friends of VIGEX, other helpers, members of the VIGEX committee who

work hard all year to make this salon happen, and Greg Duncan for the helpful ongoing support he provides for his K-Salon management

software. And we particularly thank Geelong Connected Communities Ltd, a Bendigo Bank initiative, which has provided us with funding

for our digital projector and screen.

This salon attracted a total of 4806 images, a record entry for any VIGEX salon and well over double the 1820 we had at our 2015 print

salon. We commend entrants for the high standard and variety of their work ranging from challenging nature shots to intriguing travel

images to highly imaginative creative work.

We congratulate all those who gained awards and acceptances in the salon. We appreciate your ongoing support and look forward to

seeing more of your work in future VIGEX print and/or digital salons.

We hope you enjoy this catalogue and the on-line Gallery of all acceptances which is on our website.

I was so honoured and excited to be a part of the judging team for Vigex’s first Digital Salon 2016.

Everything was well organised with a lot of images to be judged. It was lovely to see so many different images from around the globe.

The rules from FIAP and PSA gave us a lot to think about as I was judging the Colour open and the Mono.

It is always exciting to see new techniques and different ideas.

It was a challenge from the judges to arrive at the final results.

To receive an award with so much competition is a great achievement and congratulations to the winners and place getters.

I really enjoyed the opportunity given to me by the VIGEX committee to judge the 1st VIGEX Digital International Salon. Having judged

prints in a previous VIGEX International, I looked forward to seeing the work of some very talented photographers from around the world

as well as from Australia. There were some fantastic images showing great technical skills both in camera and in post production.

In the Open Colour Section, subject matter varied from superbly lit and well composed portraits, beautifully lit landscapes, seascapes and

cityscapes taken on all continents, sport and documentary images with great action and story-telling, well composed still life images and

amazing images of our natural world of animals, birds and insects. There was a problem with some images regarding eligibility in the

Open Colour section as the rules stated that artwork and computer graphics created by the entrant could only be entered in the Creative

Section.

In the Nature Section, I was delighted with the variety of subject matter and the skill of the entrants in producing such wonderful images

of nature in its environment whether on land, in the sea or sky. Images that showed the behaviour of the animal or insect world usually

scored higher than portraits. Well lit and stunning landscapes were also awarded. Again, some entrants need to read the rules regarding

manipulation and eligibility.

Congratulations to all who received awards. Also, well done to all who achieved acceptances as the standard was very high which made

the job of awarding images very difficult.

It was an absolute pleasure to judge the first Vigex digital competition in August this year. The idea of judging 2000 images over 2 days

was a little daunting, but due to the efficiency of the Vigex team it went very smoothly.

I judged Monochrome, Creative and Travel. I was delighted when I was invited to judge Creative- one of my favourite sections.

The quality of entries did not disappoint. There was some brilliant conceptualisation and compositing. There were a few entries that were

entertaining, but not quite to the standard of others- but have another go next time as imagination is a key to a good image.

I encourage those who entered and were not successful to examine the winning entries for inspiration, they were excellent.

For the travel section entrants must consider the definition states "A Photo Travel image expresses the characteristic features or culture

of a land as they are found naturally." So the winning images told us a story of the country where the images were captured.

Again, some very high quality images. When entering images for travel destinations that are popular do consider the judges will have seen

these many times and your entry must stand above the rest.

There was some very good monochrome work. The best images demonstrated a strong conversion to mono with appropriate contrast

and tonality. They also met the need of a good image in terms of visual communication.

For those who entered images of nudes on rocks - this is getting a little passé unless done really well!

Congratulations to all award winners and those with accepted work. For those who did not quite get there- learn from the winning images

and try again. "

Salon Jury’s Word

Gaynor Robson

It is a pleasure to judge an international photographic salon, so thank you to the VIGEX committee for inviting me to judge Colour Open

and Nature in the VIGEX 1st International Digital Salon. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience notwithstanding the challenge to

interpret some new FIAP rulings. In both Colour Open and Nature sections some wonderful images unfortunately scored poorly due to

noncompliance with section rulings. Some beautiful monochrome images were given minimum points in the Colour Open section.

Some Nature images suffered when the ‘hand of man’ (e.g. fences, boats and people) were all too evident in the images.

Rules can change so it is very important to read them every time. Over enthusiastic post processing unfortunately caused many potential

acceptances to be marked down, while lack of sharpness was another factor. It is always a little nerve racking, but at the same time very

heartening to give the top mark to an image that I loved only to discover that my fellow judges had done the same.

It is always exciting to see and appraise images with such a broad range of cultural, imaginative and diverse interpretations of subjects

in international photographic competitions. This first VIGEX International Digital Salon 2016 was exceptional for the quality of entries

submitted. Great anticipation on my part as to the visual treat about to be experienced with the judging process was fully realized in the

three sections in which I was involved, in particular the Creative Section, which displayed aesthetic attributes of a high standard.

The emotional, conceptual and observational characteristics captured by photographers across the sections was impressive, especially at

the acceptance level and above. Even some images that did miss gaining an acceptance still displayed values worth pursuing by their

makers. Salon judges gain a lot from evaluating images as it broadens their outlook, takes in visual surprises as well as contributes to the

knowledge of judging and for this I thank all entrants for your photographic efforts.

Engaging judges with skill is a difficult feat (It comes with knowledge, intuition and practice) and my considered opinion is for

photographers to maintain their passion for photography and continue to enter salons such as VIGEX.

To the organizing committee I thank you for inviting me to be a member of the Salon Jury, it was such a delight in which to participate.

It was an honour to be invited over to judge the Photo Travel, Creative & Nature sections of the first VIGEX Digital Salon.

The team were very professional, hospitable & a delight to work with in this new venture for VIGEX. Thanks are due to all involved.

The cultural diversity exhibited in the Photo Travel section brings together all areas of the world beautifully into one category, with

examples of lifestyles & architecture from many different Nations. Images which did well tended to be striking images which evoked an

emotional response from the viewer or displayed a particular cultural aspect of the location. Those including obvious tourists or close-ups

which didn’t capture enough of the environment did not fare so well.

The Creative section illustrated the wide diversity of digital processes available and it was great to see some original images which were

both well constructed and thought provoking. The use of more complex blending techniques has definitely given a new quality to the

genre of surrealism in photographic art. There were a few good emulations in the style of past-masters, whilst others simply excelled in

beautiful visual images of their own style.

In Nature, the standard of work was generally high & it was nice to see a good range of subject matter from around the globe, including

natural landscapes. Quite a few images suffered from either softness or more often over-sharpening & authors will need to be more

careful with this as the resolution requirements for images in exhibitions increase worldwide.

Congratulations to all who received awards and acceptances & for those who missed out, rest assured the standard was very high &

another judging panel may give different results!
