Hampton Bishop Villagers Association The New Year Dinner and Dance was a great way to start the year as well as providing an opportunity for new people to meet up with those who ’ve lived in Hampton Bishop for many years. A huge thank you to everyone who helped to lay tables, move chairs, serve food and wash up! A special thank you to Lynne Hateley, Julia Pearson and John Anker for slaving over the very hot stove all afternoon and evening! The evening was a huge success and thank you to all those who supported the event. At the last meeting it was agreed to completely paint the inside of the hall, and to date the committee room, hallway and toilets have been finished. The main hall will be completed by the end of February. The facilities we offer to hirers will also be upgraded in the near future with the addition of baby change facilities in the disabled toilet. Please note that the hire charges to villagers and others were changed at the beginning of January (see the web-site for more information). The next Villagers Association meeting will be the annual AGM to be held on Thursday 19th March 7.30pm in the village hall. We have had a number of committee members leave the village recently so we are in need of new faces to help organise a few social events throughout the year and to help manage the village hall. A huge thank you to both John Hateley and Clive Gardener who are stepping down as Secretary and Treasurer respectively at the AGM. Between them they have notched up quite a few years of service for which we are very grateful. That means that we seeking replacements for both positions; please contact John Anker (870483) if you’d like to volunteer or would like any more information. Even if you are not on the committee, all villagers are welcome to attend all meetings. Come along and have your say which social events you’d like to see taking place in our village.
Hampton Bishop Book Club The next meeting will take place on Monday February 23rd at 7.45pm at
Brambly Hedge, Rectory Road by kind invitation of Lesley Anker. The
book for discussion is “The Little Coffee Shop of Kabul” by Deborah
Rodriguez. In a little coffee shop in one of the most dangerous places on
earth, five very different women come together.

On Sunday 30th November St Andrew’s Church was honoured to have a service conducted by the new Bishop of Hereford, the Right Revd Richard Frith. It was part of his tour of the diocese just a week after his induction in Hereford Cathedral. It was a lovely ser-vice and well attended by people from both St Andrew’s and St Paul’s Churches. We were very sorry to say fare-
well to Judith Sandercock who has moved to Essex to be nearer to her son and family. In the ten years she has lived in the village, Judith has earned great respect and affection for her friendship and as a very active and tireless member of the church and community. She will be especially remembered for her flower arranging skills and the amazing floral creations she produced for the church. No one will forget the wonderful flower festivals she master-minded with her friend Janet Williams. Judith will be greatly missed and we wish her all the very best in her new home and pray that she will be as happy as she has been in Hampton Bishop and able to contribute as much to her new community as she has done here. We were very sad to hear of the death of Colin Rogers who lived in the vil-
lage for over fifty years. Until his retirement, Colin was the shepherd at Court Farm. Although he cared for hundreds of sheep he knew each one individual-
ly and was deeply concerned for their welfare. He was a lovely neighbour and held in great affection by all who knew him; when he was able, nothing
was ever too much trouble and he was always lending a helping hand. He
was immensely proud of his large family and their achievements. We extend our sincerest condolences to his widow Jenny and all the family.

"Garden Wisdom of Days Gone By" " OLD GARDENERS NEVER DIE, THEY JUST SPADE AWAY"
Winter gardening reminders:-
If the weather is very cold try grouping planted containers together next to a south facing wall for extra protection. Check pots close to
walls will get adequate rain water and if not, water on a regular basis.
Check your greenhouse insulation is still in place and that your heater, if you have one, works properly.
Sow sweet peas in long tubes and place in a heated propagator or window sill. Once they have germinated move them to a cold green-
house or frame, not forgetting to ventilate on mild sunny days.
Established apple and pear trees should be pruned now, but only if necessary. Young trees and trees that are cropping well should be left well alone, apart from removing dead or diseased wood. Currants and grapevines should also be pruned now.
Keep off your lawn as much as possible during bad weather such as heavy rain and frosty conditions.
As most of the berries and seeds will be gone from the garden by now it is most important that you keep the bird table regularly topped up
with fatty scraps such as meat, cheese, cooking fat, as well as peanuts and seed mixtures.
The start of the year is usually renowned for freezing weather and driving rain - not appealing conditions to spend time in the garden, but there is still plenty more you can do. Inside, there are seeds and
plants to order, seed trays, pots, cloches and frames can be cleaned, even a bit of early indoor sowing such as onions and brassicas on a sunny windowsill. Outside, start, or finish, digging over soil on the
vegetable plot, unless waterlogged, and add compost and manure at the same time.
Polite Notice...help clean up our village! Having recently
acquired a puppy for the first time, I am enjoying our beautiful
village walks on a regular basis. What has shocked me is the
amount of dog waste left lying on the ground where other people
have to tread. Please pick up after your dog and ask others to
do the same. Your help to keep the centre of the playing field
free from dog mess where children play is much appreciated.

News from the Parish Council The Parish Council are looking forward to this New Year. We hope that the Neighbourhood Plan will be completed, pass all the hurdles and become adopted by end of the year. We are currently waiting for Herefordshire Coun-cil to adopt their own core strategy before we can progress. This will give us much greater control of our own environment and planning applications. Elections for Parish Council will take place in May at the same time as the General and County Councillor elections so I hope that there will be a re-ally good turnout to vote. The damage to the notice board at the Village Hall is being pursued through the insurers. At the last meeting on January 22nd the Parish Council commentated on the retention of the anaerobic digester at Court Farm and made suggestions for improvements to road traffic issues relating to this. For parish council related news and information visit the new council website:
http://hamptonbishopparishcouncil.gov.uk/ The next meeting will be on March 26th at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. Norman White, PC Chair
Broadband Update:- Although Holme Lacy Exchange was due to
be updated by the end of 2014, It may be some time until Hamp-
ton Bishop benefits from faster Broadband. If you visit
www.fastershire.com you will see that BT are starting to lay fibre
from the exchange with the first homes being connected by 30th
June 2015. However, whether our village is included in this time
scale; whether the existing infrastructure can cope with the new
cable; what speed we will get at the end of it all or what the
weather will do to their time plan, (fibre doesn’t appreciate being
covered in water—not good for high water table locations!), who
knows? E-mail your comments to the editor or leave on the village
facebook page - do we need/can we do anything to speed up the
process.
