First Skype Session With Our Chinese
Sister School Yesterday our students learning Mandarin (Chinese) had
their first Skype session (online video conference) with
their Chinese buddy from our Jinji Lake School in
Suzhou, China. The students were dressed in traditional
Chinese outfits and introduced themselves in Mandarin,
stated the name of their Chinese buddy and we all sang a
song in Mandarin. The Jinji Lake School students did the
same in English. Everyone was very excited and there
were lots of waves, smiles and laughter. We look
forward to our next online contact with our buddies. Our
students will also be contributing to a shared Wikispace
(online website) with their Chinese buddy, where they
will add digital content. My thanks to Mr Lin, Mrs Price
and Miss Kirk for all the work they have put in to
providing these learning experiences for our students.
Bike Enclosure Opening Times A reminder to families that our bike enclosure is locked on school days after 9.00am and not opened until 3.30pm. If your child’s
bike/scooter needs to be collected earlier, please come to the office. The enclosure is not locked overnight.
If for any reason your child is unable to collect their bike/scooter after school, please let us know and we will lock it in the school
building overnight.
Teach Your Child To Bounce Back From Life’s Uncertainties. Part 4: A selection from an article by Alison Campbell Rate
Here are some more ideas to get you started building resilience in your children.
Find Opimistic Explanations: Mastery skills involve the way the child thinks, particularly when he has failed. The child
questions, “Why did I fail?” or “Why did I succeed?” Optimistic explanations are the basis of seeing failures as challenges with
associated activity and hope. Train your child to think of optimistic explanations for events. Watch the way you describe events-
both for yourself and for your child: For example:
*Do you tend to use terms like "always" and "never" when things go wrong… “You never tidy your toys” or do you focus on the
actual event? “You forgot to tidy your toys. You’ll have to finish before you watch TV.”
*Do you describe setbacks as permanent catastrophes… “I’m useless at cooking.” or as incidents that can be acted upon? “This
cake didn’t turn out very well. I’ll try a different recipe next time.”
*When things go well do you call them “flukes”… “You were lucky your teacher was in a good mood” or do you give your child
the credit? “Your teacher gave you the job because you are reliable.”
Congratulations to our birthday child
Education Week Activities Education Week is from Monday, 20
th to Friday, 24
th May. See below for an outline of activities occurring at our school and in
our education community throughout this week.

Open Day and Information Morning and Evening at White Hills Primary School will be held during Education Week on Tuesday,
21st May from 9.00am – 3.30pm, is an opportunity for parents, grandparents and friends to visit their child’s class. It is also a
great time for new parents to see our school in action and speak to Prep teachers about the terrific programs available at our
school.
Education Week Information Sessions Morning and Night: for 2014 Prep Parents A morning Information Session will be held in the school library on Tuesday May 21
st from 10.00 to 11.00am, and an
evening session from 7.00pm to 8.15pm. These information sessions are especially designed for 2014 Prep parents interested in
choosing a school for their child or who have already chosen White Hills Primary. Childcare is available at both these sessions.
Promoting Our School We have found that the best way to promote our school to new families is through you, our parents. If you know anyone moving
into our area, has a child attending your child’s pre-school or who has a Prep child for next year and has not chosen a school for
their child, talk to them about our school and please invite them to attend the above information sessions. Perhaps you could come
with them to help them feel more comfortable. Remember that you, our parents, are the best ambassadors for our school.
Religious Education Religious Education for all children in Grades 1-6 commenced this Term. The course used for Religious Education lessons is the
approved Department of Education (DEECD) program that focuses on learning to work
together and caring for each other. Thanks to our team of trained R.E. teachers who have
volunteered their time to work with our students. If you do not wish your child to
participate in this non-denominational program please inform your child’s class teacher, in
writing, by next week.
For more information on the program please see Jan Ellis.

Dress rehearsals will be conducted on Tuesday 7th
May, the girls will be performing in five sessions between 11.30am and
1.30pm in the hall. Parents, family and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend this event. Girls will need to come to
school on that day with their shoes, socks and underwear in a plastic bag. It is expected that they will also come with a very
secure bun in their hair.
We are competing at the Prelim’s on Saturday, 11th
May in Geelong. As in previous years, it will be an early start, so please
prepare yourselves! The competition schedule has not yet been released; however as soon as we know we will relay that
information to you. Parents, relatives and friends who wish to come to Geelong on the bus are welcome. However there is limited
seating available and it will be ‘first in, best dressed’. It costs $20.00 per seat and payment can be made to the office in a clearly
marked envelope. You are also most welcome to drive to this event.
Medical forms and permission notes for the competition will be coming home this week and need to be returned ASAP.

MUSIC/DRAMA NEWS Whole School Musical “Kids At Sea” Rehearsals started this week for all students from Prep to Grade 6 in preparation for our Whole School Musical “Kids at Sea”.
Please remind children who have lines to learn to start learning them and also to bring their scripts to school on Monday is for
rehearsal.
The dates for the production are Monday, 26th
, Tuesday, 27th
and Wednesday, 28th
of August. All children in Prep – 4 will be
placed in 3 performance groups and will perform for one of these nights and the 5/6s will perform in all three performances. As
you can imagine the organising of this process is enormous. Parents will be notified soon about which performance group their
children will be in. Please note the dates in your diary and keep them free as it will be a spectacular evening showcasing our
Performing Arts Program. As the cost of hiring the Capital Theatre is higher ticket prices will need to be increased. They will still
be very reasonable for a night’s entertainment for the family.
Footsteps Dance Program A reminder that the School Disco which is a part of the ‘Footsteps’ program will be held in the BJ Winzar Hall on Thursday, 16
th
May. The Preps to Grade 2 attend from 6.00pm to 7.00pm. The Grades 3 to 6 attend from 7.15pm to 8.30pm. Parents are asked to

by the same dance instructors who conduct ‘Footsteps’ with the school staff assisting with supervision.
Multi Instrumental Bands Please note that there is NO band and choir next week due to Anzac day. We are presently rehearsing for the Bendigo Eisteddfod
Competitions later this term. The Senior MI band will be competing on the 17th
May and the Choir on 21st June at the Strathdale
Hall in Crook Street.

JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS
Preps Grandparent's Morning As part of Education Week the Prep grades will hold a special morning for Grandparents or older friend on Friday, 24
th May,
from 9.00am to 11.00am. Parents are asked to mention this date to grandparents/friends so they can be available for this special
time. Invitations for grandparents will be sent home closer to the event.
Footsteps Dance The Footsteps Dance Program will continue until 17
th May. The Preps will attend this program in the Sport’s shed between
9.00am-9.40am. Please make sure your child is at school on time for the Footsteps dance program.
Premier’s Reading Challenge Children can still join the Premier’s Reading Challenge this week. If you have lost your child’s form please see your child’s
teacher for another one. This challenge involves you reading chosen books to your child, something you already do. Only 20 of
these books need to come from the Premier’s list and the others can include favourite stories, your child’s reader and books that
are read to your child in class. Teachers will send a list of books read in class to Ms Netherway to be logged onto your child’s list
on the computer. This challenge finishes in August so all children could easily complete it and receive a certificate from the
Premier as well as improving their reading skills.
PMP P.M.P. commenced on Monday,
from 2.30pm to 3.30pm. These specialised sessions greatly benefit the Preps’ gross and fine
motor coordination and concentration skills. However, parent/grandparent help is essential on a regular basis to ensure these
small group tasks function effectively. Activities are organised by teachers, are explained to parents and are simple to operate.
Thank you to those parents who are helping with this program. Any parent who would also like to assist with P.M.P. is most
welcome. Please see your child’s teacher to offer your help and receive a roster.
Language Hint For The Week When reading with your child, choose the time that suits your family best - after school, before school, before going to bed, etc.

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS Botanical Garden Walk Our walk to the Botanical Gardens created a lot of interesting discussion in
terms of living and non-living things. Students are now using these ideas as the
basis for their Wonderings. It was pleasing to note the positive behaviour of the
students and their enthusiasm towards the task at hand. We would also like to
thank the parent helpers who came across with us. Without your ongoing
support we would be unable to run such activities.
Homework Just a reminder that this was sent home last week and is due on Friday for this
week only, due to ANZAC day on Thursday.
Footsteps Dance Program It was great to see all the students participate in this program with such
enthusiasm. We are looking forward to seeing some of the dance moves created

Zone Cross Country Congratulations to those students who participated in the Zone Cross Country today.
Anzac Poem They lost their lives to save our country
And all their mates are gone forever.
That’s why they will never be forgotten.
Some soldiers were in excruciating pain,
Some got through it and some did not.
That’s why they will never be forgotten.
To the people who are still alive
We will thank them for everything
And we will call them our heroes.
That’s why they will never be forgotten.
The messenger dogs saved soldiers lives
That’s why they will never be forgotten.
There is one day each year, on the 25th
of April,
Where we remember all the soldiers who were terrified
Of all the bombing and gun firing.
That’s why they will never be forgotten.
The fathers that were in the war who had died,
Their families would have been waiting and waiting
For their husbands and dad’s to come home
But they never will come home.
That’s why they will never be forgotten.
So, we need to say
LEST WE FORGET.

Girls Day Out Yesterday we had a fantastic 1½ hours of activities run by
Fusion, which is a program run in conjunction with Year 8
students from Weeroona Secondary College. Our students had
fun with many activities such as box soccer and tug of war.
We saw some excellent skills with stilt walking and team
work was essential with the water bomb volleyball. Our
students came away from the activity with some wonderful
balloon sculptures and artwork on their faces. The Year 8
students are to be congratulated with the enthusiastic way that
they ran the activities and it was great to see 4 of our past
students involved.
This Friday from, 4.30pm-7.30pm, the Fusion group will be
running a free session as a “community block party” at the
Epsom Village Green. Parents and families are welcome.

I wish poem I wish I could go back to my family.
I wish I could find my brother.
I wish I could be as much of a hero as Simpson.
I wish I didn’t have to do this.
I wish less people would die.
I wish we could sit there with machines like the Turkish.
I wish both countries could be friends.
I wish we could live peacefully.
I wish there were no wars.

School Camps & Excursions: Asthma
If your child has asthma, attending school camps and excursions can introduce them to new asthma triggers especially if they are
going into new environments. It is essential that your child can participate fully and safely in all school activities. The following
is a list of considerations to make for your child before they go on school camp or an excursion:
Is your child’s asthma currently well controlled (e.g. no symptoms at night, reliever use less than 3 times per week)?
Has your child had an asthma attack or asthma symptoms recently?
Does the school have an Asthma Action Plan for your child?
Has the school asked you to complete a School Camp and Excursion Medical Update Form?
Does your child have their reliever medication and spacer on hand at all times?
Are they attending with any other medications to be taken on the camp/excursion? If so, are there sufficient instructions
to staff for use/dosage?
Does your child self-administer their medication? If so, has their technique been checked recently?
