NEW VENTURES
Inauguration of the Blessed Pope John Paul II block
KARUNYAM, an outreach programme was coordinated by the NAAC coordinator,
Dr.W.S.Kottiswari, with the Social Service League as part of post re-accreditation
process. It is a continuous process organized with the intention of creating social
awareness and commitment in the minds of the younger generation. Students,
faculty members and non-teaching staff are actively involved in this programme
contributing generously to buy provisions, blankets, adult diapers and cotton clothes
for the inmates of the isolated ward, District Hospital, Palakkad.

Activities of the Department
The activities of the English association for the academic year 2011-12 were inaugurated by Dr.Anto Thomas C.
(Associate Professor, St.Thomas College, Thrissur.) with a talk on the topic „Native Culture and Ecotopica:
Ecocriticism in children‟s Literature‟on 13 September 2011.

„Shakespeare week‟ was celebrated on the third week of November (From 21.11.2011 to
24.11.2011) with events such as a quiz competition, a recitation competition, a film version
of Shakespeare‟s tragedy „Othello‟ and a poster exhibition.
A One day Seminar on „Post structuralism‟ was organized by P.G. Research Centre for
Comparative Studies, Department of English, Mercy College on 1 December 2011. Dr.B.Sreekumar, Head, CMS
College, Coimbatore gave a talk on post structuralism for I and III Semester M.A students.
The Research Journal „Pursuits‟ Volume IX was formally released by Dr.Sr.Kripa

of Forests wherein a huge canvas was erected and students participated by drawing and

Arthashasthra 2011- An inter collegiate Quiz Competition for students of various

The Human Rights Day was celebrated on 9 December 2011 . Prizes were awarded to
the students for an essay competition on the topic “Food Security- The largest Human

The SC/ST Development Department , Government of Kerala in association with the Kerala State Electronics
Development Corporation LTD (KELTRON) conducted a Free Career Training Programme for SC Final Year
Students and provided guidance on the topics P.G Diploma in ITES and B P O and Certificate
Programme in Professional Excellence to the beneficiaries in March.
25 Students were placed by Infosys in the campus recruitment Drive conducted at G.V.C. Palakkad in March.

Narolis Technologies,Palakkad conducted an awareness programme on the various computer courses offered by
CDAC with government certification on 29 July 2011.

A One day Orientation Programme was conducted on “Gender –Related Interventions in Colleges: Skill Training
for Teachers” organized by centre for Women‟s Studies, University of Calicut at Mercy College, Palakkad on 26
November 2011. Women‟s Cell coordinators from various Colleges in Palakkad District participated in the
orientation programme.
NATURE CLUB
The nature club initiated its activities for the year 2011-12, with the enrollment of 105
members into this club. The club launched a “Nammude Maram Programme”, creating
awareness among students about the importance of planting trees in the environment. About
60 plants were planted inside the Mercy College campus. This Programme was inaugurated by Dr. Sr. Chrisantha,
Founder Principal , Mercy College on 23 July 2011 by planting a sapling in the campus and also by distribution of
plant saplings to the club members.
Students participated in the Wild Life week Celebration-2011 conducted by the Social Forestry Division ,
Palakkad. The event included Pencil Drawing, Essay Writing, Watercolor painting, Quiz and Elocution competitions
conducted between 1 and 2 October 2011. Anjali S and Anjana K of I yr Physics bagged the first place in quiz at
district level and were selected to attend the State level Quiz Competition.

It is a great pleasure to announce that for the first time in the history of Mercy College NCC unit,
one of our cadets was selected for youth exchange programme and that credit goes to SUO A.V
Anjali Menon. She is one of the two cadets selected from Kerala and Lakshadweep Directorate
for the youth exchange programme to Bangladesh from 1 to 24 December 2011. She deserves
special congratulations.
SGT A.V Anjali Menon attended the Republic Day Camp 2011 at New Delhi from 1 to
30 January 2011 representing Kerala and Lakshadweep Contingent. Our cadets won the
first place in the parade conducted in connection with the Independence Day 2011 and
the Republic Day celebrations 2011 at Fort Maidan Palakkad.
UO Neethu Das and UO Shinu C attended NIC at Ranchi, Bihar from 17 to 18 January

Nine cadets took part in the combined Annual Training Camp held at Grassim Complex Mavoor
from 21 to 30 August 2011. CPL Reshmi Krishna won the first prize in Recitation in the Cultural

NSS
Ms .Anju O.J. participated in the Program officers meet at empanelled training institution (ETI) for NSS,Rajagiri
college of social sciences, Kalamassery from 20 to 25 June 2011.
Orientation classes were conducted for the academic year 2011-2012 on 11 July 2011.
A legal awareness class was given by Smt.Mary Joseph,Prl.District &Sessions Judge,
Palakkad on the topic “Women related Laws” on 19 July 2011.
The fresher‟s day was celebrated on 3 August 2011 to welcome all the new NSS
volunteers.
The NSS students participated in a survey conducted by child line of Mercy College to
find the school dropouts in the nearby villages of Palakkad town on 7 August 2011.
The Badging Ceremony was inaugurated by Dr.Sr.Leoni,Former Principal Mercy
College, Palakkad on 11 November 2011
The N.S.S volunteers visited the Mercy Old Age Home as a part of elder‟s day celebrations and entertained the
members on 27 November 2011
Special Camp held at Kenathuparambhu
A Seven day N.S.S Special Camp from 28 December 2011 to 3 January 2012
was inaugurated by Sri. A.Abdul Khudus, Muncipal Chairman, Palakkad, Dr.Sr.Kripa,
Principal, Mercy College, Palakkad Presided over the function. Sri M.K. Narayanan
Namboothiri, N.S.S district coordinator gave the message. Smt. Philomina O.A, Councilor
(ward no.36), Dr.Sr.Christy, Vice Principal, Mercy College, palakkad and
Sri.Aboobacker.T, P.T.A President,Mercy College, Sri.Kandan Kutty retired Health Officer felicitated the function.
Various awareness classes were organized as part of the camp. A class on Medicinal Plants was held by Smt. Rekha
Vasudevan, Asst Professor Mercy College Palakkad. Lectures on various topics - Value of Education, Women
Empowerment, Moral Values, craft work Health and Hygiene were also organized. N.S.S volunteers were engaged
in various activities like socio–economic and educational survey, cleaning the approach roads of the colony, the

members of the camp provided basic literacy to the illiterate people in the Kenathuparambhu area, sports and
cultural competitions were organized by the N.S.S Volunteers for the children in the adopted area. The Camp
members engaged in several developmental activities and celebrated The New Year with the people of the adopted
area.
The Valedictory Function was inaugurated by Sri. Shafi Parambhil M.L.A. Dr Sr. Leoni
,Former Principal,Mercy College,Palakkad presided over the function.The findings of
the Socio-Economic and Educational Survey were submitted to Smt. Philomina O.A,
Councilor (ward no.36), Palakkad municipality to take necessary actions. Ms.
Roshni.V of first year chemistry and Ms. Nimisha.N of first year botany were selected
as the Best N.S.S Volunteers .Dr Sr Kripa gave away the prizes. PTA president, Sri. Aboobacker T distributed the
certificates for the N.S.S volunteers.
CHILD LINE
Child line of Palakkad conducted a three day summer camp, Souhurdam 2011,
between 3 and 5 May 2011 at the Seminar Hall of Mercy college which was
inaugurated by Mr.Vijaya Kumar (DYSP, Special Branch). Sixty students participated
in the camp.
A rally conducted by Child Line of Palakkad for generating awareness on Child Line
and Child Rights was flagged off by Mr. Prashob(Deputy Superintendent of police) from South Police Station on
11 November 2011. Around hundred students from Mercy College participated in the programme.
SOCIAL SERVICE LEAGUE
The Social service league day was celebrated on 29 November 2011 with an address by
Sri.T.N.Kandamuthan, Chairperson, District Panchayath, Palakkad.
Christmas was celebrated at “Sevanalayam”, Pattikkara, Palakkad with entertainment by
Social Service league members on 17 December 2011.
The Family Counselling Centre conducted a seminar on “Pre-marital counselling for
unmarried youth” by Mrs.Sreedevi K.G.,District Social Welfare Officer, Social Welfare Department.
The Service Providing Centre had dealt with 40 cases under Domestic Violence Act in 2011. In five cases free
legal aid was provided.
The Social Service League runs a Creche which has 38 children. Christmas was celebrated in the Creche on 22
December 2011.
The typewriting and basic computer operation course gives training to students and poor women at a very low
cost. Women are preparing for Lower and Higher Exams in KGTE Examination.
PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB
The activities of the new academic year 2011-2012 started with a slide presentation by Mr.A.C.Babu Jayan and a
motivating talk by Mr.K.V.Vincent for the freshers on 5 August 2011.
Photography classes for the new batch began on 17 August 2011.
Outdoor photography session for the new batch was organized on 17 December 2011.They visited Kanjirapuzha
dam and Malampuzha.
“Foto Art 2011” was organized jointly by Mercy college camera club (IRIS) and Image Palakkad on 21 and 22
February 2011.

ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION
The General Body meeting of the Alumnae Association was held on 9 July 2011.
The Association felicitated Visalakshy.N on 9 July 2011 for bagging the second
Rank in the University exams.
The Alumnae Association celebrated Onam on 1 September 2011 and Christmas
on 23 December 2011.
The association conducts training classes on Home Science Skills like tailoring,
embroidery for the financially weak. The association continues to provide
ISD/STD and Instant Coffee facility in the Campus.
