SCRIPTURE INSIGHTS

As we look back over our lives, we recall with embarrassment and guilt sinful events we would rather forget. Each of the readings recalls such moments but these are celebrated instead of for-gotten. In the reading from Exodus the people of Israel, whom God had liberated from slavery, have turned away to worship false gods. In pray-er , Moses mediates on their behalf and they expe-rience the joy of God’s merciful love. In his Letter to Timothy, Paul recalls his former way of life as he persecuted Christ and his follow-ers. Without excusing himself, Paul celebrates the forgiveness he has experienced through the Risen Christ's call and transformation. The Gospel offers three parables displaying God’s immense love and forgiveness. “There will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance.” This joy is captured in the parable that could be called the “Parable of the Forgiving Father.” Af-ter patiently awaiting his son’s return, the father sees him in the distance, runs, and embraces him. Such actions may have been extraordinary for a Jewish patriarch. The son begins to ask for-giveness, saying, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you,” but the father interrupts his prepared speech and throws a party to wel-come him back. Forgiveness results in celebra-tion. The second part of the parable, contrasts the fa-ther’s joy and forgiveness with the elder son’s ina-bility to forgive. He cannot share his father’s joy. Undoubtedly, the father portrays the greatest ex-ample of God’s forgiving and embracing love. • Which of the characters do you identify with

father’s joy? • How can you imitate St. Paul in celebrating

God’s loving forgiveness in your life?

Today, throughout the Catholic Church, we celebrate Catechetical Sunday with the theme of “Stay with Us.” This is a special observance in each parish as we pray for and ask God’s blessings upon all those who share in the important work of catechesis and Christian formation. Those who share in this ministry are our catechists in the Parish School of Religion, the administrators and teachers in our Catholic Schools, youth ministries and those who are involved in the ministry of RCIA. Please join me in thanking them for not only giving of themselves in a generous way to provide religious education and formation for our youth and adults, but also pray that God will continue to bless them and inspire them in their ministry. We all want a second change to erase the mistakes we have made. But often we refuse to give others the second chance we seek for ourselves. The words in the Lord’s Prayer; “...And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us…” remind us that our failings will be forgiven in proportion to forgiveness we extend to others. It assures us that if we want a second chance, we must give a second chance.

How to Boost Your ‘Good’ (HDL) Cholesterol

HDL cholesterol is the kind of cholesterol you want more of. It’s called the “good” cholesterol because it helps protect you from getting heart dis-ease. HDL cholesterol brings cholesterol to your liver, which sends it out of your body. So you want as much HDL as possible. You can get a blood test to check your cholesterol level. Having an HDL level of at least 60 may help protect you from getting heart disease. Of course, other things — like not smoking, being active and staying at a healthy weight — also matter for your heart’s health. Many of those things also affect your HDL level. 5 Ways to Raise Your HDL Cholester-ol: Get Active. Physical activity can boost your HDL level. Get at least 30 minutes a day of mod-erate activity, most days of the week. Lose extra weight. If you’re overweight, losing extra pounds can help raise your HDL levels, as well as cut your LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels. Choose better fats in your diet. The healthier choices are monoun-saturated and polyunsaturated fats. You’ll find these in plants, nuts and fish like salmon or tuna. And, like everything you eat, keep your portion sizes small. Fats pack a lot of calories in small amounts. Alcohol in moderation. Drinking mod-erate amounts of alcohol in lined to higher HDL levels. If you don’t drink now, check with your doctor before you start, since alcohol has some risks not related to cholesterol. Stop smoking. Kicking the cigarette habit raises your HDL level.
