A total of 689 stakes races were reviewed, with 474 earning graded status, down from 485 in 2010. Five races were upgraded, including the Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf, which achieved a Grade I ranking for the first time. An addi- tional five were elevated to Grade III events for the first time. Sixteen races were downgraded, with 10 losing Grade III status for next year. The Clement L. Hirsch Turf Championship was the lone Grade I downgraded, and will be run as a Grade II next year. It was also revealed that Charles Town in West Virginia would be running its first graded race this year, and the Charles Town Classic was awarded a Grade III. AIt=s an achieve- ment that our entire team and all those associated with Charles Town Races should be proud of,@ said Erich Zimny, director of racing operations for the track. AThe Charles Town Classic is a great example of leveraging the lucrative purses provided by slots and now table games at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races into drawing more attention to racing in the eastern panhan- dle of West Virginia. Sales officials were pleased with the results atTattersalls December. AThe general consensus prior tothis week was that, despite two quality dispersals, thecatalogue was a little short of obvious stars and thatthe sale might fall short of last year=s levels, but thefigures tell another story,@ Edmund Mahony said. ATurn-over and average showed a slight increase, and, similarto the December Foal Sale, the median has risen signifi-cantly. The clearance rate has not quite matched lastyear, which reflects the larger number of lots offered, but it still compares favourably with the 2007 and2008 Tattersalls December Breeding Stock Sales.@Mahony lauded the international appeal of the sale, adding, AIt was particularly gratifying to see consignors, not only from Britain and Ireland, but also fromthroughout Europe being so well rewarded for theircontinued confidence in the Tattersalls December Sale. The feature of the sale, as with so many sales atTattersalls, was the extraordinary level of participationfrom overseas buyers. With buyers from almost 40different countries, it is hard to single out individuals, but we were delighted to see Indian buyers returning toTattersalls in such numbers after the lifting of importrestrictions and we believe that they have purchasedmore than 50 lots this week. Other countries whichhave also made important contributions include Argen-tina, Libya, Malaysia, Qatar and Russia, and we willcontinue to explore as many emerging markets as pos-sible in conjunction with British Bloodstock Marketing.@

Once you=re hooked on racing, you=re hooked for life. TheTDN profiles those who have been in the business sincechildhood, and those who came late to the game.

JUST WILD ABOUT RACING Harry Rosenblum likes to get to the races as often ashe can, and he fully intended to be in the seats cheer-ing when two-year-old Crown Princess (Elusive Quality)made her debut at Churchill Downs Nov. 21. ButMother Nature had other ideas. "It was really really foggy in Little Rock,@ Rosenblumexplained. AI was going to fly [to Louisville] on a privateplane, but the weather was iffy, so I didn't want tochance it. I=ve regretted that I didn=t make the trip." Rosenblum had to watch on TV as Crown Princesscame running late to break her maiden by a length(video). He might rue the fact that he wasn=t able to

join her in the win-ner=s circle, but hecertainly doesn=t re-gret getting involvedin the sport of horseracing, a decision hemade some three de-cades ago. The son of a caval-ryman who numberedPresident Harry S.Truman as one of hisclose friends, HarryT. Rosenblum wasborn and raised in

Arkansas. (The T. stands for Truman, and the formerleader of the free world was Rosenblum=s godfather). He was barely into his teens when he was introducedto racing. AWhen I was growing up in Little Rock, the formergovernor of Arkansas and his family lived two blocksfrom us,@ he recalled. AHis wife would take their son,who was a friend of mine, and me to Oaklawn to theraces on weekends, and she would teach us to read theDaily Racing Form. I had been around horses early inmy life, but I fell in love with racing. I was really enam-ored with the sport.@ The love affair continued after he left for college.Rosenblum was, at the time, studying to be a doctor, but he found time to educate himself on the finer pointsof picking winners as well. AA friend and I read all these books on handicapping, then on Friday and Saturday we would go to the racesat Oaklawn,@ he said. AI loved everything about it.@

Rosenblum decided against a career in medicine, andinstead turned his attention to the business of invest-

ing, working as a managingdirector for the investmentbanking firm Crews andAssociates in Little Rock.He also had the good for-tune of falling for noneother than Miss Arkansas,Marilyn Kay Allen, and theymarried in 1975. AI marriedover my head,@ he offeredwith a chuckle. It was after he joinedforces with Kay that he

made the leap from racing fan to horse owner. AWhen I had been married a few years, a friend toldme that a trainer from Nebraska, Jack Gardes, had ahorse for sale,@ Rosenblum remarked. AI bought halfand, first time out for us, just two weeks later, he wentout and won by many at Oaklawn. I was hooked.@ If his experience with that runner, the moderateclaimer Sylvester Road, hadn=t done the job, his suc-cess with the talented turf horse Vilzak (Green Dancer)most definitely would have. A listed winner in France,Vilzak was offered at the Matchmaker Sale of horses ofracing age at Hollywood Park in October of 1986. AI picked him out because I loved Green Dancer,@Rosenblum said. AJack Van Berg, who was my trainerat the time, and I went out to look at him at what musthave been 5:30 in the morning--it was pitch black. Iended up buying him, and he did very, very well.@ The bay, acquired for $155,000, would take theRosenblums on a thrill ride in 1987. Vilzak made 18starts at 11 different racetracks, riding the coattails ofVan Berg=s stable star. AHe was following Alysheba,@ Rosenblum explained.AWherever Alysheba ran, he ran, too. It was a phenom-enal experience for us." Vilzak ran second in the Early Times Turf Classic atChurchill the day before the GI Kentucky Derby, andthird in the GII Dixie H. at Pimlico seven days before theGI Preakness. Third in an allowance test two daysbefore the GI Belmont S., he came back to contest theGII Nassau City S. at Belmont the day after the final legof the Triple Crown (but trailed in last). The well-trav-eled runner also accompanied Alysheba to MonmouthPark and Louisiana Downs, albeit without landing ablow in his races. It wasn=t until the end of the season that Vilzak reallygot good. Second in a Keeneland allowance test Oct. 16, he came back seven days later to be third inthe Keeneland Breeders= Cup S., then filled out thetriple as a 39-1 shot in the Col. F. W. Koester H. goinga mile at Santa Anita Nov. 8. That was deemed theperfect prep for the GI Breeders= Cup Turf at Holly-wood. Wild About Racing cont. p6

"I tell you, we absolutely thought he had a legitimatechance, or we wouldn't have entered him,@ Rosenbluminsisted. AHe hadn=t been given any credit. He mighthave run a few times too many that year, but he hadrun some pretty decent races, and he didn't start to dobetter >til he got blinkered." The crowd had none of the owner=s faith, and sentVilzak off as the 147-1 outsider in the field. But hedidn=t run to his odds. Fanned five wide into the stretchunder jockey Jorge Velasquez, he closed on the duelingleaders Theatrical (Ire) and Trempolino at the top of thelane. The two favorites proved too much to catch, butVilzak ran on gamely and ended up fourth, beaten aneck for third and 4 1/4 lengths for all the money. He=dprove the effort was far from a fluke when capping offthe year with a win in the GI Hollywood Turf Cup. AI=ll never forget it,@ Rosenblum said of the Breeders=Cup. AI was pretty nervous when he ran; I aboutdropped my binoculars, my hands were shaking somuch. At the top of the stretch, I was thinking, >I hopehe gets there!= I don=t know that he could have beatenTheatrical and Trempolino, but I thought he could beright there with them--I thought he could be third.@ What did it mean to the young couple to be a part ofthe Breeders= Cup spectacle? AI just can=t tell you,@ Rosenblum added. AI hope Ihave another opportunity to get there. It was reallygratifying for us. We were new to the business, and itreally was a thrilling experience. We met a lot of peopleback then that are still our friends. It was just fantas-tic.@ The Rosenblums primarily raced in California in theearly years, necessitating frequent flights to the WestCoast. They also built up a large string quickly, findingrunners at the sales and through private purchases, andoccasionally breeding their own. But they have consoli-dated their stable, and now have just a dozen or sohorses. "This is a good size stable for us,@ Rosenblum said.AIt's not as much fun when it gets bigger. We haveeight or nine of racing age and three or four yearlingsturning two-year-olds that we can look forward to." They also have a lot to look forward to with CrownPrincess. The bay filly was originally snapped up for$6,500 by Lee Christian and partner John Shaw at the2009 Keeneland September Sale. Christian, a resident of North Carolina who also headsup the South Carolina Thoroughbred Owners and Breed-ers Association, got his start in racing when he movedto Maryland in 1968 to work for the National SecurityAgency. He lived across the street from Laurel Parkand, Aventured over there way more than I shouldhave.@ The Georgia native eventually wrote to the Mary-land Racing Commission, trying to get information onbecoming an owner. AThey wrote back, >buy a horse, get a trainer, get alicense.= Not helpful,@ Christian recalled.

It wasn=t until 20 years later, when his travels hadtaken him to Arizona, that he finally had his chance tobreak into the business. A co-worker who happened tobe a former jockey in South America floated the idea ofgetting a racehorse. AIt was just a matter of, >how fast can I write thecheck?=@ Christian said, adding, AWhen we started out,it was just a group of us that wanted to have somefun. When it became more serious, I tried to make it acommercial enterprise. AWe buy where there=s room to make a littlemoney, and the end users have a shot to make money,too.@ Crown Princess fit the bill. AAt the sale, the filly had good size and a great walk,@Christian said. AWe were surprised that we got her atthe price we did. The filly was so attractive that I origi-nally named her Eye Candy.@ Christian sent the yearling to Shaw in Ocala, and itwasn=t long before the partners realized just what abargain they=d landed. Shaw, a close friend ofRosenblum=s, picked up the phone. AWe have bought a lot of horses from John over thelast 10 years, and we've gotten a lot of good horsesfrom him,@ Rosenblum said. AHe told me she hadn'tbeen outworked on the farm, and she had a nice pedi-gree, so I bought her.@ The price was admittedly higher than the $6,500 shebrought at Keeneland. "We paid significantly more, but, obviously, theyknew she could run,@ Rosenblum said. Christian, a fellow stock broker who now serves aschief financial officer for a company that supplies tem-porary workers to the food and beverage industry, waspleased that Crown Princess came out running for hernew owner. AI recognize how tough it is to make money in thisbusiness, even to win a single race,@ he said. AIt is greatto have someone do so well with a horse that you soldthem--and it=s good for business.@ Rosenblum wouldn=t argue. AThis filly boosted our spirits,@ he said, adding, AWhatwas impressive to me about the race was that sheshowed the ability to rate--she rated like an older horse.Rosemary Homeister Jr. rode her, and she moved herout at just the right time and made a really nice run.She did it like she=d done it 100 times before. That=s agood quality in a young horse, to have a mind like that.@

Crown Princess is trained by Eric Reed. Reed and hiswife (also named Kay) run Mercury Training Center inVersailles, Kentucky, where they break babies and trainolder horses. But the Reeds will head south for thewinter, as will Crown Princess. ALast year, they stabled at Tampa, and they did prettywell,@ Rosenblum said. ASo the present plan is to go toTampa and either run Crown Princess in an allowancerace [on the grass] at Tampa or, if she trains exception-ally well on the dirt, in the Tropical Park Oaks at Calder. Then we will probably bring her to Oaklawn to run in aroute race. But first steps first.@ The Rosenblums= primary residence is still in LittleRock, but they built a house in Hot Springs last year, and plan to spend weekends during the racing seasonat their new home. AThey call Oaklawn >the Saratoga of the South,=@Rosenblum enthused. "It's a really beautiful place torace, we're fortunate to have it. You will see hugecrowds at Oaklawn--it's nothing to have 20,000 peopleat the races, and even more. It's incredible." The Rosenblums have been gracing the grandstand atOaklawn since the days of Sylvester Road. Times havechanged, but their enthusiasm for the sport has not. AWe had a lot of fun back then,@ Rosenblum said. AWestill do.@

FIRST WATCH In a time when the proven stallions, rather than thenewest, brightest stars, are commanding the top feesand attracting the best mares, the already substantialgamble of breeding to an unproven sire is intensified. No longer does the breeder, consignor, or pinhookerhave the luxury of the buyers actively trying to buy thestock of unproven sires--now, they have to earn it,because the presumption is those buyers of futureracehorses, like everybody else when times are tough, will look first at the stock of sires he or she knows canthrow a good horse. Three years ago >they= liked theunproven horses because, as yet, they had done nowrong. Now, nobody likes them because, so far, theyhaven=t done anything right. So prices drop faster onunproven sires than the proven ones, and that, poten-tially, creates value--if you guess right. For stallions whose first yearlings have sold this year, and will be two-year-olds of 2011, it can be the tough-est sell of all in a down market, because there=s a bigtemptation just to wait and see what happens. By thedreaded fourth year--the year their first two-year-oldsrun--the stud fees for sometimes even the hottest stal-lion prospects will have dropped by half or, in the caseof some of this year=s candidates, up to two-thirds:Teofilo (Galileo), for example, the top F2009 (first foals2009) sire by yearling average ($162,037, per Insta-Tistics), will be standing for i15,000 in 2011, justthree-eighths of his original 2008 i40,000 stud fee;Street Sense (Street Cry), tops in North America,($129,933) will stand for $40,000 in 2011, down from$75,000. This F2009 crop is a unique sire crop, because, ofthe 14 sires with 20+ yearlings sold in 2010 and aver-ages over $50,000, seven of them are Darley stallions, and another--Shadwell=s Invasor (Candy Stripes)--makesit eight Maktoum stallions, over half the contenders. Itwas in 2007 that Sheikh Mohammed=s operationsplashed out an estimated $200 million to buy most ofthe top three-year-olds on both sides of the Atlantic--five of the seven Darley stallions in this group werefoals of 2004, though Teofilo, the European championtwo-year-old of 2006, never actually ran at three. Theothers were GI Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense(from Street Cry=s first crop), Hard Spun (Danzig), andAny Given Saturday (Distorted Humor) in the U.S.; andG1 Epsom Derby winner Authorized (Montjeu) in Eu-rope.

It=s ironic--and great news for Darley--that even be-fore this battalion of stallions gets the acid test, theiroperation has developed new top sires in Dubawi andShamardal, and inherited Medaglia d=Oro, to go withCape Cross, Elusive Quality, and their then-new star,Street Cry, since they bought this new intake of stal-lions. So the busiest people in the business for the nextmonth or so are sure to be the Darley nomination sellingteams, who have to convince breeders to roll the dicethat the new Darley sire of their choice (insert namehere) with first two-year-olds 2011 will be next sea-son=s Iffraaj (Zafonic) or Congrats (A.P. Indy), even withthe gamble costing just half what it would have tobreed to the stallion in its first season.

First Foals 2010... It=s a completely different mission for the sire groupright behind them, those which had their first foals in2010 (designated F2010 stallions), and which thereforehave had their first weanlings selling at the mixed sales. With this group, the dominance is not so much Darleyas it is Europe. We=ve spoken before about how, inrecent sire crops, the top emerging stallions havetended to alternate: among the F2006 sires, the Ameri-can quartet of Medaglia d=Oro (El Prado), Tapit (Pulpit),Speightstown (Gone West), and Candy Ride (Ride theRails) have emerged as that sire crop=s World Top 30sires; of the F2007 sires (first foals 2007, or three-year-olds this year), the top two by a wide margin areDarley=s European pair, Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) andShamardal (Giant=s Causeway). There=s no definitiveword yet on the F2008 sires (though you have to beimpressed with Bernardini {A.P. Indy}), with their firsttwo-year-olds this year; but it will be a real upset ifDarley sires, whether American or European, don=tdominate among F2009 sires, because there are somany of them. It seems to me very striking that the top five F2010sires, by weanling average to date, were all European-based as racehorses; only Henrythenavigator(Kingmambo), at Coolmore=s Ashford base in Kentucky, doesn=t stand in Europe. Moreover, they=re not just thetop five--they=re the top five by a wide margin: Duke ofMarmalade (Danehill) ranks fifth, with a $90,930 aver-age, and it=s a fair way back to the leading AmericanF2010 sires, Big Brown (Boundary, $62,153) and Curlin(Smart Strike, $61,000). The number of weanlings sold from sires= first crops, over the last 10 or 15 years, has increased to the pointwhere the commercial performance of sires= first wean-lings can be meaningful: both Cape Cross and Montjeuannounced themselves on their respective commercialplatforms with outstanding crops of first weanlings atthe sales and, sure enough, they=ve both turned out tobe World Top 30 sires at worst. Oppenheim cont. p10

“As you can see from the tables, Tattersalls’ December Sale took a hugedive in 2008, but recovered to some extent last year and sustained thatrecovery this year. The gross for the foal section of the sale dropped 13percent from last year but was still 20 percent higher than in 2008; theaverage was off five percent from last year but was similarly 21 percenthigher than in 2008. Given that the mare catalogues can vary dramatically, the fact that the gross and average were marginally up is good news, though the clearance rate from the catalogue was down. The Tuesdaymare session was massively strong.” - Bill Oppenheim

I think the best example of it this year is the Spend-thrift stallion Tiz Wonderful (Tiznow), who had 19weanlings sell for an average of $39,263, off a 2009stud fee of $12,500. His totals included seven wean-lings which sold for between $45,000-$67,000, plusone which made $200,000! He has got to be throwingreally attractive stock. One thing for sure is the buyers rated Europe=s 2008three-year-old milers very highly indeed: they are thetop three F2010 sires by weanling average so far.Henrythenavigator had five foals sell in Kentucky, foran average of $208,000, with his old adversary, Ra-ven=s Pass (Elusive Quality), second in average, with 15sold of 16 offered, for an average of $166,079.Tamayuz, from Nayef=s first crop and the top three-year-old miler in France in 2008, ranks third, with 11sold, averaging an impressive $111,061. He, in turn, ranks just ahead of New Approach (Galileo), who aver-aged $108,127, with just three sold. New Approach, the unbeaten champion European two-year-old of 2007,was beaten at a mile by Henrythenavigator in both theG1 English 2000 Guineas and G1 Irish 2000 Guineas, but came back to win the G1 Epsom Derby, and beatolder horses in two 10-furlong Group 1s, first the IrishChampion S., then the Champion S. at Newmarket.Fifth among F2010 sires by weanling average, as men-tioned, is Duke of Marmalade, a five-time Group 1winner as a four-year-old in 2008.

By comparison, the top four Kentucky F2010 stal-lions were Big Brown ($62,153), Curlin ($61,400),two-time GI BC Sprint winner Midnight Lute (RealQuiet, $56,400) and Street Boss (Street Cry, $53,950).Though I suspect the weanling averages for the toptwo will prove to be a commercial blip--I expect bothwill have considerably higher yearling averages in >11--the current rankings show the European sires, espe-cially the milers (two of whom did run one-two in the2008 GI Breeders= Cup Classic at 10 furlongs, it istrue), outselling everybody else pretty convincingly.

But I=ll be surprised if New Approach, like all-timeleading North American money-winner Curlin and BigBrown, doesn=t do considerably better commercially

with his 2011 yearlings.New Approach was apretty awesome dude asa racehorse himself, and, in fact, this is avery promising-lookinggroup of sires. Superstar Sea theStars was, of course, the best horse to retireto stud in 2010 (or, ac-cording to some, thebest to retire in any year

since Secretariat). Though we don=t have the Insta-Tistics figures yet, by my reckoning, eight mares havebeen sold in foal to him for an average of about$722,250. I think we can safely say whatever is run-ning second in that category is several miles behindhim. Finally, the Tuesday session at Tattersalls= Decembermare sale, which by all accounts was extremely strong, proved again that European-based operations bringplenty of firepower and plenty of financial strength tothe table.

For whatever reasons, international buyers are willingto pay more, on the whole, to buy into the right stuffthan are Americans; or maybe it=s just that there isn=tenough of the right stuff in America any more. Withsuper-strong currencies, both Japanese andAustralasian buyers have once again been very promi-nent at the mixed sales this year and, with their bordersagain open to bloodstock from the U.S. and U.K., In-dian breeders have bought something like 150 mares inthe U.S. and at Goffs and Tattersalls. The bloodstockmarket may be worth 40-percent less than it was threeyears ago, but, at least if we=re operating at 60 percentof previous levels, Tattersalls= Tuesday session provedagain that competition is fierce for the right stuff.

IL STATE SENATE APPROVES SLOTS The IllinoisState Senate Wednesday gave its stamp of approval ona bill that would expand gaming in the state, allowingfor the installation slot machines at the state=s race-tracks. By a vote of 31-20, narrowly achieving therequired 60-percent approval, four tracks in the greaterChicago metropolitan area--Arlington Park, HawthorneRace Course, Balmoral Park and Maywood Park--wouldeach be permitted to have 1200 slots, while downstateFairmount Park and the Quad City Downs near the Iowaborder would be allowed to install 900 machines. Ac-cording to published reports, after-tax gaming revenuewould be funneled to the racetracks= purse accounts ona sliding scale depending on receipts. The bill wouldalso clear the way for a land-based casino in downtownChicago as well as facilities in five other locationsaround the state. Illinois is already home to severalriverboat casinos. Despite the Senate passage, the billis far from a lock to become law. It faces an uncertainfuture in the state=s House of Representatives and doesnot enjoy the full support of Governor Pat Quinn.

Hollywood Cancels Two Wednesday Programs: Citing disappointing field sizes, officials at HollywoodPark have decided to cancel the remaining two liveWednesday programs during its current meet. The trackwas scheduled to race five days a week for the finalthree weeks of the stand, but drew just 47 entries forthis past Wednesday=s program. Hollywood raced fourdays a week during the month of November. Accordingto DRF, the track has historically had trouble attractinghorses in the weeks leading up to the opening of SantaAnita. The publication also reports that many outfits areawaiting the start of the meet in Arcadia, when a 25-percent purse increase is to take effect due to an in-crease in the takeout on exotic bets. Santa Anita willrace just four days a week in January and Februarywith the exception of a pair of holiday Mondays.
