A time of renewal -- a time of refreshment . . . well, May anyway. As it turns out, there’s a lot of opportunity for refreshment in May as you’ll see if you stay with me till the end. I set out to write an article about community clean- up, but it wasn’t going well. I’m think- ing May . . . May . . . What is there to talk about in May? And so, as we so of- ten do, I turned to Google and decided to just “follow the research” so to speak. We’re not changing the world here this week, but I entertained myself along the way, and I hope maybe you too. Did you know, May has a celebration or day of recognition for every single day? All 31, kicking off off with May Day on May 1st. Back in my elementary school days we commemorated whatever May Day is supposed to commemorate by making baskets of flowers, gathering dandelions and other flowers we could find, and delivering them to the neigh- bors’ doors. We used the tether ball pole to weave colorful ribbons to decorate it. But till this week I had no real idea why. I figured it was a way to get us outside and doing good deeds. My in depth research suggests May Day has roots in astrology. It is the halfway point between the spring equinox and the summer solstice. As with many hol- idays celebrating planting and harvest, it marked that the crops were planted and livestock were out in the pastures. In time it evolved into a festival to cel- ebrate a time of fertility. Blah blah blah . . . Holy mother of God what a boring holiday. For those of you for whom May Day is your most precious day of cele- bration please forgive me, I have no clue how to turn the topic of May Day into a Pulitzer Prize winning article. (Continued from front page)

know, but it gets better.May 14th: National Buttermilk Biscuit Day, Really. Is this just the best month?!May 15th: Chocolate Chip Day, just when you thought it couldn’t get better.May 16th: Love a Tree Day, It can’t be all about you. So let’s clean some air and help save the planet and plant a tree . . . Wait, isn’t that Arbor Day?

May 17th: National Walnut Day. I think I hear those crickets now.May 18th: National No Dishes Day. As always, my research was exhausting May 19th: National Devil’s Food Cake Day. Who doesn’t love Little Debbie?May 20th: National Quiche Lorraine Day, Sounds good! Get over yourself: Real men do eat quiche, as long as it has bacon.

May 21st National Memo Day, I had a really good line for this day but I can’t fi nd where I wrote it down.May 22nd: National Vanilla Pudding Day, I know, kind of vanilla and boring for the month of May. But then there’s RumChata vanilla pudding shots! You’re welcome again. May 23rd: World Turtle Day. Who doesn’t like turtles. Keep a eye out for them crossing the road. I could’ve let that lead

me into a cheesy joke but this is a serious article. May 24th: Asparagus Day. Google Rosemary Lemon-drop Martini. I am seeing a thread here about May.

May 25th. National Wine Day. Some of you Moms already celebrated this on the 9th but this is a chance to redeem yourselves if you forgot Mother’s Day. Once again, you’re welcome.May 26th: National Blueberry Cheese Cake Day. The hits keep coming. May 27th: National Grape Popsicle Day. I can’t make this stuff up, people. Look it up.May 28th: International Hamburger Day. this one may have to be the topic of a future article, exhaus-tively researched to reveal the best hamburger in the area. A big undertaking but I have a duty to my readers to get to the truth.May 29th: National Composting Day. Not as sexy as Hamburgers or Wine, but compost makes for great tomatoes and good grapes... which make good hamburgers and great wine.May 30th: Water A Flower Day. Go water your fl owers.May 31st: National Macaroon Day. Some of you thought of cookies. For the rest of us, look up the recipe for coconut macaroon cookie cocktail.

So to sum up my “research” on May Day I am pretty sure the universe has answered my question about the purpose of this holiday. It is to always look for a reason to celebrate and enjoy everyday as another day to celebrate. If we look hard enough everyday is a day to make our world special. Enjoy your May.
