    maar Sondag het diewe die

agttiende keer met n ses meter

lange houtpaal by di huis in

    Burenstraat, Welkom, inge-

    Bertus Claassens, n oudbur-

    soos sy geskop is.

In die huis het diewe op soek

    na waardevolle artikels letter-

    lik alles uit kaste gegooi.

    n Ontstelde Corrie het

    Maandag vertel hoe huishoude-

Vir haar is dit vreeslik om te

die huis gevind. Dit is gebruik

om die kluis oop te breek en

    twee handwapens en Kruger-

rande is onder meer uit die

    kluis geneem.

    i-Pads, selfone, n televisiestel

    en dekodeerder is ook gesteel.

VIRGINIA will host its first annual Mealie

Festival on 27 September at Kool Village.

With talent shows, a Mealie King and

Mealie Queen, wine tasting and many more

activities the organisers hope to boost

tourism and bring back something positive

    to the region.

The theme of the festival is Peace,

Democracy and Freedom and it will cater for

    every appetite.

Arts, crafts, outdoor adventure and even

activities for children will form part of the

    festivities.

Food stalls will have a large variety of

typical South Africa cuisine to keep visitors

    happy. Entrepreneurs and artists are

invited to use the festival as a platform to

    showcase their products and talents.

The Goldfields needs to be promoted and

traffic from the nearby N1 can be drawn

into the area, say the organisers.

Lovely restaurants, guest houses, places of

historical interest and the Goldfields have a

lot to offer tourists. For more information

call Cindy Mac Nicol-Kapp on 082-522-9069 or

Marie van der Zandt on 074-173-5845.

TWO cousins who had killed an elderly

woman, whom they had believed to be a

witch, were each sentenced to 20 years in

    prison on Friday.

The men made themselves swords and

killed Mapeisi Mpondo (57) in November

2013. Mpondo, who lived with her son on

the L17 Glen Ross Farm near Virginia, was

killed in her home. Her son was at work

    when she was attacked.

The two cousins believed that Mpondo

had been responsible for the deaths of their

mothers who were sisters. Mpondos muti

allegedly bewitched the two women and

    eventually caused their deaths.

In a statement the two men said they had

walked from the farm after they had killed

the victim and were given a lift to town. An

off-duty correctional officer picked them up

and they told him they had to go to the

police station as they had just murdered

    someone.

The correctional officer went with them to

the police station where Capt. Thabang

    Motleteng took their statements.

They also handed over the two swords as

evidence. The two men were then formally

arrested and gave their full cooperation

during the whole case. Adv. Sandile Mtheth-

wa, for the state, thanked the Virginia

police for their hard work during the case.

Judge J. Naidoo sentenced the men.

    Cousins sentenced

TWO former volunteers of the Welkom

SPCA, Margaret Lauder, the former chairper-

son, and Jacques Maree, a former committee

member, pleaded guilty to theft of R67 725,93

    in the Welkom Magistrates Court.

A formal forensic audit was done and,

according to the acting committee of the

Welkom SPCA, it is believed that the loss

was far greater than the amount mentioned

above. The accused will again appear in

court on 6 November to process formalities.

The public has been assured that the

Welkom SPCA is fully operational and steps

have been taken to repair and refurbish the

kennels and facilities for animals. Committee

and staff members of the SPCA branches in

the Free State and North-West and personnel

of the NSPCA travelled to Welkom on

Sunday, 15 June, to support the Welkom

SPCA by giving the kennels a facelift.

    The management committee thanked the

SPCA in Virginia who had assumed the

responsibility of managing the SPCA in

    Welkom.

This followed the removal of the Welkom

SPCA committee by the National Council of

    SPCAs (NSPCA) when financial mismanage-

    ment had been alleged.

THE St Andrews School in Welkom has

embarked on a tablet roll-out programme

at the school, making it the first school in

the Goldfields to realise the potential of

placing technology in the hands of its

    learners.

The school has deployed enterprise class

wi-fi across its campus providing learners

with access to safely controlled internet

access wherever they are at all times.

Classrooms have been equipped with tech-

    nology that allows collaboration between

    learners and educators and increased

    engagement with the subject content.

Gone are the days when screens were

sneakily glanced at under the desks. Now

they are part of everyday schooling, says

    Clayton Campbell, Apple solutions expert

for education and director of onsite IT

    support.

We believe that technology has the

power to transform the classroom. It can

pave new ways of thinking, new ways of

sparking ideas. Yet, the foundation never

changes: a dedication to learning that has

always been a part of our DNA.

We have been proud to work alongside

educators and students to reinvent what it

    means to teach and learn.

Together we are doing things we never

    thought possible, says Campbell.

He says that with the investment spent

    on developing technology infrastructure

and connectivity they have enabled the

school to become more efficient and to

    focus on their core business.

For example, tests can be marked

    instantly. Learners type in their answers;

teachers see their input and can immedi-

ately provide feedback when the assess-

    ment is done.

The fact that the school can get feed-

back from each and every learner gives

the educator a temperature check of the

    classroom.

If 40% of the class didnt understand

what the educator was saying then that is

a reflection on the teacher. The insight

    that technology provides, allows the

school to develop teachers, and for

teaching and learning to be more person-

    alised, says Campbell.

He says students are now using the

technology that CEOs of companies are

    using.

This allows us to develop CEO-type

skills, to solve problems and look for new

tools that allow us to do things differently,

and that is transformational, says Chris

    Jewell, headmaster at the school.

THE September flea market in North Park,

Welkom, on Saturday promises to be a fun-

filled international food and aviation fair.

    The Matjhabeng Flea Market committee

    has approached well-known Italian Ivan

Belotti to be at the helm of this project. He

has organised a large variety of stalls to

    cater for everyones needs.

According to Raff Moretti, the chairper-

son, this could become a regular feature at

the flea market, depending on the success

    of the September market.

Along with the international food fair,

    Brian Emmenis, veteran international air

show commentator, has been called in to

organise a massive aviation awareness day

with a large static display by Westline

Aviation from Bloemfontein and an exhibi-

tion by the Goldfields Gliding Club.

Chris de Jager of Skydive Central in

    Bloemfontein has been approached to

exhibit and if all goes well will perform a

parachute jump during the flea market,

    says Emmenis.

Jean Snyman of Hazquip will be exhibit-

ing their large range of the latest fire

    engines and related rescue equipment.

Karel Zaayman of the Aviation Shop will

have a stall where the public can purchase

anything from model aeroplanes to avia-

    tion-related badges, DVDs and books.

The flea market is currently a major

source of income for the association.

    Tariffs incorrect

DR JAN MARAIS, leader of the

    Matjhabeng DA caucus:

    DEAR ratepayer of Matjhabeng,

    the calculation of your electricity

    account was done according to

tariffs that were not presented or

    approved by council with the

adoption of the annual budget on

    30 May.

    The approved increase for

    electricity, as presented to the

    public during the public partici-

    pation process, and to council

at the budget meeting on 30

May, was 7,39% on R1,01 for

    residents.

    However, the tariff that the

    municipality uses, is R1,55 (54%

    increase) and R1,65 (64% in-

    crease).

    Section 102 of The Local

    Government Municipal Systems

Act (No. 32 of 2000) stipulates:

    102 Accounts. (1) A municipal-

    ity may

    (c) implement any of the debt

    collection and credit control

    measures provided for in relation

to any arrears on any of the

    accounts of such a person.

    (2) Subsection (1) does not

apply where there is a dispute

    between the municipality and a

person referred to in that subsec-

    tion concerning any specific

    amount claimed by the munici-

    pality from that person.

    I therefore propose that all

    individual ratepayers register a

    dispute with the municipality

    by completing a dispute form

    and lodging your dispute and

handing it in either by hand at

    the municipal managers office,

    or e-mailing it to mothusi.lephea-

    [email protected].

    Completed dispute forms can

    also be faxed to 057-357-4393.

    The municipal manager of

Matjhabeng has to give you a

    reference number (according to

    the municipal bylaws).

This must be done by 12

    September (Friday). The forms

are available from the DA offices.

    Pay your account minus the

    electricity component.

    By doing this please remember:

    1. If they cut your services, it is

    illegal and they are contravening

section 102 (2) of the Systems Act.

Then you will have to approach

    the court yourself.

    2. The money that you withhold,

must be kept in reserve. You will

have to pay it to the municipality

    when the dispute has been

    resolved.

    3. This is political action against

    implementation of wrong tariffs.

The DA does not give legal

advice and you cannot keep the

DA liable for damages and costs

    because of your participation in

    this political action.

    gehad.

    Die neiging van die munisipali-

deur die raad goedgekeur is nie, in

    Op die raadsvergadering van 30

    ging (R1,01) op elektrisiteits-

    tariewe, maar die verhoging van

54% wat nou in werking gestel is,

is uitbuiting. Dit is verregaande en

    Die VF+ sal n dringende

Die tyd het aangebreek dat ons

    Die munisipaliteit probeer om sy

Our children are on loan to us

from God. He is depending on us

to teach them by principle how to

    work in relationship with Him

    and our fellow human beings.

We are shocked daily by brutal

    murders that are becoming a

    frightening pattern across the

    country.

Every time there is a service

    delivery protest, shops are looted

    and libraries and community

halls are burnt down. How can we

expect our children not to be

    bullies and violent at school?

    Children watch violence on

    television and read daily newspa-

    pers. The frequent playing of

    violent video games increases

    aggression in children.

People are burnt to death when

they are suspected of crime by

    kangaroo courts.

    Municipal elections are around

    the corner. Instead of protesting

with their votes, our people shut

    down schools and involve learners

    in their own fights.

    What about other forms of

    passive resistance that will not

put the future of our children at

    risk?

    As the late president Nelson

Mandela put it: Education is the

    most powerful weapon you can

    use to change the world.

    We also need principled princi-

    pals who can maintain discipline

and are able to manage conflict in

schools and be able to sustain the

    principle of ubuntu.

In the past, discipline was never

    a challenge in schools because

    learners were raised the Godly

    way.

    THE Matjhabeng Ratepayers

    Association representing both

    domestic and business electricity

    consumers in Matjhabeng confirm

herewith that with effect from 1

    July there exists an electricity

    tariff dispute.

) In terms of the Municipal

    Systems Act consumers are

    declaring this dispute on an

    individual basis and withholding

    electricity payments until such

    time as Matjahbeng settle the

    mentioned dispute.

    ) The Matjhabeng Ratepayers

    Association has on numerous

    occasions debated and even

    petitioned the mayor and senior

    officials in regards to increases

    and tariff structures.

    These petitioned pleas have fallen

    on deaf ears.

) It is anticipated that consumers

will not pay for electricity per the

    accounts due on 12 September.

At no time during the budget

    community meetings held in

    May were these tariffs alluded

    to.

    ) The inconsistency of calculati-

    ons on consumer accounts

    delivered is a huge concern.

) Reports are being received from

    consumers that they cannot

    receive their municipal accounts.

    This action is reprehensible and

in conflict with the dispute action

    being taken.

)We accept that your best efforts

will be devoted to clear up this

    dispute with the least disruption

    and inconvenience.

We look forward to you ensuring

that this dispute be reconciled and

    the Matjhabeng Ratepayers

    Association await your urgent

    response.

    Will this dispute ever

    be resolved?

rus couple with a panga in 2013, recently

    appeared before the Odendaalsrus Magistra-

    tes Court.

The accused, Aaron Mbuti Tsoaedi (33),

Abram Masilo Moronyane (25) and Mongezi

Ndende Sinxezui (27), were all found guilty

    imprisonment.

The men, who were known to the

victims, broke into the couples house and

    demanded money.

They also took a microwave oven and

Tupperware from the house before fleeing

    the scene.

According to the station sommander of

Odendaalsrus, Col Disebo Cezula, the hard

work and dedication of WO Peter Thiwane

DIT was n kwade dag in Riebeeckstad,

Welkom, toe vier katte vermoedelik met die

gifstof bekend as two-step vergiftig is. Die

gif is met tuna gemeng en op n grasperk

    uitgesit.

Di katte was eintlik die eiendom van

    almal in Robertsstraat. Verskeie inwoners

    vier geword.

Verlede Saterdag het ek gesien een van

die katte l dood. Dit was vir my snaaks,

want die kat was nie siek nie. Daar was

egter skuim om sy bek. Die volgende

oggend het ek besef iets is fout. Ek kon die

katte nie kry nie. Ek sien toe twee katte l

in my buurvrou se erf dood, terwyl een

besig was om te vrek. Ek het Claws gebel

en die polisie gekontak, maar die polisie

het ges hulle kan niks doen nie, omdat dit

straatkatte was.

veearts in Welkom geneem. Cindy Bort-

nowski van Claws s n klag van dieremis-

handeling gaan by die polisie ingedien

    word.

    Kapt. Stephen Thakeng, woordvoerder

van die polisie, het aan Vista ges die

polisie ondersoek die saak intern en daar

sal teen die beamptes opgetree word wat die

    klaer weggewys het.

    n PLAASWERKER

    is voorverlede

    Saterdag na bewe-

    ring deur n

    polisieman wat van

    diens was, raakgery

    en ernstig beseer.

    Hy is toe deur die

    man by n plaashek

    afgelaai en glo ook

    met die dood

    gedreig.

    Die ongeluk het

    op die Bultfontein-

    pad voor die afdraai

    na die Sandvetske-

    ma gebeur. Volgens

    Charlotte Schoeman,

    Piet Steyn se

    werkgewer, het n

    ooggetuie die

    voertuig, n wit

    Mercedes, se

    registrasienommer

    neergeskryf en dit

    behoort aan n

    polisieman wat in

    die aanklagkantoor in Jan Hofmeyrweg

werk. Steyn het aan Vista ges hy sal

luidens n doktersbrief eers weer in

Desember kan werk. Sy been is geopereer

en met penne geheg. Hy beplan om eers-

daags n klag by die polisie in te dien.

    Plaaswerker

    raakgery

    PIET STEYN, n

    plaaswerker, is ern-

    stig in n tref-en-

    trapongeluk beseer.

    Die bestuurder van

    die voertuig wat

    Steyn raakgery het,

    het geshy is n poli-

    sieman en sal hom

    glo skiet sou hy pro-

    bleme veroorsaak.

SES jaar gelede het Lorna Kruger se

dogter, Renet Schoeman, met n peperduur

    houtraam by die huis opgedaag.

    vensterrame.

Ander mense se afval is my materiaal

om mee n inkomste te genereer.

Oral in die tuin is daar karakters wat sy

    uit afvalmateriaal geskep het.
