This course is a studyof the InternationalPhoneticAlphabetand the rulesofpronunciationforEnglish,Italian,German,andFrench.

Each music degree candidate is required to complete eight semesters ofPerformingA r t s C l a s s ( BMEs t u d e n t s a r e e x em p t e d d u r i n g t h e s t u d e n t teaching semester). A grade is given based on the student'sattendanceatPerformingArtsClassandrecitalsandconcertsatOuachitaandoffcampus.

Students on vocal scholarship must maintain a "B" average in order toretain their vocal scholarships. A statement of attendance requirements isavailableintheSchoolofFineArtsoffice.

2.REQUIREMENTSFORVOICEPRINCIPALS(includingminors):A.MinimumRepertoireRequirementsforFirstSemesterFreshmen

Repertoire studied previously: No more than twenty-five percent of asemester'srepertoiremayconsistofmusicstudiedintheprevioussemester.

Repertoire fromEnsembleperformances:Solo literatureperformed inOperaWorkshop,MusicalTheatreWorkshop,orinchoralensemblesmaybelistedontherepertoiresheetifmemorized.Thismaterialmustbepartofthesemester'sstudioliterature.

Note: The fact that a student has memorized the required number ofsongsdoesnotassurethatthestudentwillreceivethatgrade.

C. Minimum Performance Requirements for second semester Freshmen,Sophomores,JuniorsandSeniors

*AstudentmusthavesatisfactorilypreparedforandperformedinPerformingArts Class during the semester to qualify for an “A”. Exceptions must beapprovedbytheinstructorandtheDeanoftheSchoolofFineArts.

*A studentmust performbefore a voice jury committeeat the end of eachsemestertoreceiveapassinggrade.

*At the teacher'sdiscretion, a student appearing in a recital is exempt fromthe Performing Arts Class and jury performance requirements for thatsemester.

D.JuryExamGuidelinesforVoicePrincipals

1. Everystudentenrolledinvoiceunderaprincipalappliedcoursenumbermust perform before a jury at the end of the semester.Music minorswitha voiceprincipalmustperforma jury at theendof each semesteruntil their voice requirementsare complete. Theonly studentsexemptfromthejuryrequirementarethosewhohaveperformedarecitalduringthatsemester,orwhohavecompleted thevoice requirements for theirchosendegree.

2. The juryconsistsof the student'svoice teacher andno fewer than twoothervoiceteachers.

3. The student will choose the first selection to be performed and twoadditionalselectionswillbechosenbythejurypanel(thejurywillselectatleastonemusicaltheatreworkforBM/BFAMusicaltheatrestudents).

4. Based upon this performance, each member of the jury panel willaward anumericalscoreonthescaleof91-100=A,81-90=B,etc.

5.Thegradesareaveraged,andtheteacherhastheprerogativeofraisingor lowering the average by up to TENpoints dependingupon thestudent's weekly performance in the studio. Attendance, amount ofpractice, degree sought, vocal technique and progress, amount ofliteraturelearned,difficultyof literature,languageaccuracy,andmusicalstyleareamongthefactorswhichmayaffectthegrade.

6. The final grade is awarded by the voice teacher based upon the samegradingscaleand issubjecttotheminimumrequirementsstatedinthismanual.

7.Studentsreceivingan incompleteinvocalstudymustperforma jurynolaterthantheendofthethirdweekofclassesofthefollowingsemester.If the jury isnotcompletedwithinthe first threeweeksthe incompletebecomesan"F".

8. Students who continue tostudy voice after completing their degreerequirementsarenotrequiredtoperformajury.

4.REQUIREMENTSFORSECONDARYVOICESTUDY

A.BachelorofMusicinWorshipArtscandidateswhoseprincipalappliedmusicarea is instrumental or keyboard must take four hours of voice as theirsecondaryappliedmusicarea.It isgenerallyrecommendedthatat leastonethirdofthesemester’srepertoirebesacredmusic.

B. Bachelor of Music Education candidates who follow the choral majorrequirementsmustchooseoneofthefollowingappliedmusicoptions:

(1)Twelvehoursofvoiceandfourhoursofpiano(2) OR, Twelve hours of piano (or organ) and a minimum of sixhours of voice, with a jury at the end of each semester. Forstudents choosing option (1) successful completion of the pianoproficiency examination is required at the end of their appliedpianostudy.

C.BachelorofMusicinPerformancecandidateswithaprincipalinkeyboardorinstrumentalmusicmaychoosefourhoursofvoiceastheirsecondaryappliedmusic area. Successful completion of the piano proficiency examination is

requiredattheendoftheirappliedpianostudy.

E. Jury Exam Guidelines for the VoiceSecondary

A jury exam is required of all students taking required secondary voice.Students will be expected to sing one memorized selection of their choicetakenfromtherepertoirestudiedduringthesemester. Theteacherwillawardthe semestergrade. The jurypanel doesnotprovidewritten comments forthesestudents.

Policiesforincompletesandcompletionofrequiredstudyarethesameasforprincipals.

5.NON-MUSICMAJORSNon-musicmajorsmayenrollinappliedvoiceasanelectivewhenvoicefacultyloadspermit.Non-majorsenrolledaselectivesare not requiredtoperformajury, and repertoire requirements are left to the discretion of theindividualteacher.

6.UNIQUERECITALREQUIREMENTSFORMUSICALTHEATREMAJORS(revised,fallof2019).A. GENERALMUSICTHEATRERECITALREQUIREMENTS:

In order to pursue the Bachelor ofMusic or Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree inMusical Theatre, a student must meet the following requirementssatisfactorilyasevaluatedby a committeeof voice and theatreartsfaculty.RecommendationsonwhetheraMTstudentshouldpresent their recital in thefall or springof an academic yearwill bemadeby the theatre faculty no laterthan November 15 of the previous year. Voice faculty members will make itknowntothetheatrefacultybyDecember1ofthatsamesemester,iftheyhave

reservations about the student’s ability to be vocally prepared for therecommendedsemester.

B. BMMTSOPHOMOREBARRIERRECITAL:

Students pursuing the Bachelor ofMusic inMusical Theatre present a fifteen-minutesophomorebarrierrecital.TheBMMusicalTheatresophomorerecitalisanassessmentofthestudent’sabilitytoperforminthegenresofClassicalandMusical Theatre as singer, dancer, and actor. The recital should demonstratestrong proficiency in musicianship, healthy, style-appropriate vocal technique,characterdevelopment,andmovement. It isgenerally recommendedthat thisrecitalbepresentedduringthesecondsemesterofthesophomoreyear.

One-halfof the recital shall consistof standardmusical theatre repertoire. TheMusical Theatre selections must represent the three main style periods ofmusicaltheatre, including(1)thelate19thandearly20thcentury,(2)TheGoldenEra (1940-1975), and (3)modern (1976-present). Furthermore, this repertoiremust include a duet and a song with movement, and shall not exceed 7:30minutesinlength,includingtransitions.

The remaining half of the program must be standard classical literature, andmust include songsor arias sung in Italian,GermanandFrench. The repertoireshouldfeaturecontrastsincompositionalstyleandhistoricalperiod.Thishalfoftheprogramshallnotexceed7:30minutesinlength,includingtransitions.

No costume changes will be allowed during the program. Augmentations ofattirecanbeachievedbyaddingascarf,jacket,orotheraccessorypiece,ontopoftheexistingoutfit.

It isexpectedthattheperformanceskillsetandoverallqualityofbothsectionsoftheprogrambeequallystrong.Balancingbothaspectsofthisdegreemakesitentirelyuniquewhencomparedwiththeotherdegreesoffered.

SophomoreBMMTrecitalswillbescheduledduringthe2p.m.PAChour.Datesfortheserecitalswillberequestedbythestudent’sappliedsinginginstructorin

Students pursuing the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre will present afifteen-minutesophomorebarrierrecital. TheBFAMusicalTheatresophomorerecital is an assessment of the student’s ability to perform in the genre ofMusical Theatre as singer, dancer, and actor. The recital should demonstratestrong proficiency in musicianship, healthy, style-appropriate vocal technique,character development, and dance. Based on recommendations made bytheatre faculty, the recitalmaybepresented in either the fall or springof thesophomoreyear.

The sophomoreBFAMusical Theatre recital consistsof 15minutesofmaterial,including transitions. The material required for a BFA Musical Theatre recitalincludes a ballad, a duet, a legitimate song and dance number, and a scenelastingapproximately3minutes.Atleastoneoftherequiredmusicalselectionsmustbefromamusicaltheatreworkcomposedpriorto1976.

Whendeveloping the program, the recitalist should consider that thematerialperformed can be combined, such as a duet that is also a song and dancenumber, which may also be from a musical prior to 1976. This allows forflexibility within the programmedmaterial, while still meeting the establishedtimerequirements.

The15-minutetimelimitmakestheeconomyoftransitionsextremelyimportant.To this end, the recitalist should select material that limits changes betweenpieces, by planning the logistics in a manner that allows the program to beperformedwithintheallottedtime.Furnitureandpropsshouldbepre-set,andnocostumechangesarepermitted.Augmentationsofattirecanbeachievedbyaddingascarf,jacket,orotheraccessorypiece,ontopoftheexistingoutfit.

The recital shoulddemonstrate strongproficiency inmusicianship, healthy, style-appropriate vocal technique, characterdevelopment,andmovement.

At least three months prior to the recital date, or, by the end of the priorsemester,whicheverisearlier,therecitalistisrequiredtosubmitallperformancematerialforapproval,alongwiththenameofeachpersonassistingintherecital.The program material and recital assistants must be approved by both thestudent’sappliedsinginginstructorandtheatrecoach.

Dates for these recitalswill be requestedby thestudent’s applied singing instructor in consultationwith their assigned theatrecoach.NonOBUstudentssuchasfamily,friends,oralumniwillnotbeallowedtoparticipateinrecitals.

E. BFAMTSeniorRecital

Students pursuing the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre will present atwenty-fiveminuteseniorperformancerecital.

TheBFAMusicalTheatreSeniorrecital isanassessmentofthestudent’sabilityto perform in the genre of Musical Theatre as singer, dancer, and actor. Therecital should demonstrate strong proficiency in musicianship, healthy, style-appropriatevocaltechnique,characterdevelopment,anddance.

The senior BFA Musical Theatre recital consists of 25 minutes of material,including transitions. The material required for a BFA Musical Theatre recitalincludes a ballad, a duet, a legitimate song and dance number, a song from amusical theatrework composed prior to 1976, a comedic scene, and a seriousscene(scenesshouldnottotalmorethantenminutes).

Whendeveloping the program, the recitalist should consider that thematerialperformed can be combined, such as a duet that is also a song and dancenumber, which may also be from a musical prior to 1976. This allows forflexibility within the programmedmaterial, while still meeting the establishedtimerequirements.

The recital should showversatility anddepth in characterdevelopment, ratherthana focusingonaparticular themeorstyle.Therecitalistmaypresentmorethantwoscenes,as longasthecumulativeperformancetimeforthosescenesdoesnotexceed10minutes.

The25-minutetimelimitmakestheeconomyoftransitionsextremelyimportant.Tothisend,therecitalistshouldselectmaterialthatlimitscostume(1completecostumechangeallowed)changesbetweenpieces,byplanningthelogisticsinamanner that allows the program to be performed within the allotted time.Furniture and props should be pre-set. Recently performed senior BFAMTrecitalsmaybeusedasamodelfordevelopingaprogramthatfitswithinthe25-minute time limit. Please consult with your applied singing instructor, and/oryourtheatrecoachforalistoftheseprograms.

At least three months prior to the recital date, or, by the end of the priorsemester,whicheverisearlier,therecitalistisrequiredtosubmitallperformancematerialforapproval,alongwiththenameofeachpersonassistingintherecital.The program material and recital assistants must be approved by both thestudent’sappliedsinginginstructorandtheatrecoach.

Therecitalistwill shareadatewithanotherrecitalistwhetherthetwoperformjointlyornot. Inanycase,studentsmayuseonly twoadditionalperformers toassist with the program. In addition, no student performer, especially seniorrecitalists, shallbe involved inmore than two recitalsduringagivensemester,includingtheirown.

SeniorBFAMTrecitalswillbescheduledduring the 11a.m.PAChour.Dates forthese recitals will be requested by the student’s applied singing instructor inconsultation with their assigned theatre coach. Non OBU students such asfamily,friends,oralumniwillnotbeallowedtoparticipateinrecitals.

*AdditionalRequirementsfortheBM/BFAinMusicalTheatreBM/Musical Theatre majors are required to audition for, perform in, or beinvolved in technical aspects of allMusical TheatreproductionspresentedbytheOBUDivisionofTheatreArts. It is important thatMusical Theatremajorsunderstand that their primary area of dramatic involvement will be in theproductionssponsoredbytheSOFA,andthatextracurricularactivitiesmustbea lesserprioritywhilepursuingtheirdegreeprogram.It isalsosuggestedthatduring their course of study at Ouachita, BM/Musical Theatre majors beinvolved in twonon-musical dramatic productions presented by the Divisionof Theatre Arts. This involvement will further refine and strengthen thestudent'sactingskills.

During a semester where the student is not presenting a recital, literaturerequirements for students pursuing the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree inMusicalTheatrewill include approximately three-fourthsMusical Theatre andone- fourth standard classical literature. Language requirements are left totheteacher’sdiscretion.

7.VOCALAREAGENERALINFORMATIONTheMaryShambargerCompetitionforSingers

The Mary Shambarger Competition for Singers honors Mary Shambarger,Professor Emerita of music at Ouachita Baptist University. Mrs. Shambargerservedonthemusicfacultyfor32years.Atthetimeofherretirementin1998,she was the Lena Goodwin Trimble Professor of Music. Mrs. Shambargerserved as a voice instructor, classroom teacher, and choral director. She alsoserved as Coordinator of the Vocal Studies program. Upon retiring Mrs.Shambarger endowed the Competition for Singers and has helped with itsadjudication. The competition is a rotating format between Art Song, AriasfromOperaandOratorio, andMusicalTheatre repertoire.OBUVoicePrincipalsintheirfourthsemesterofstudyorbeyond,areeligibletocompete.
