Africa is corrupt and disaster-prone, it is just naturally poor. Its not our business. Charity starts at home. 6. Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice. Like Slavery and Apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man- made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. Sometimes it falls on a generation to be great. Voices for Development: The concept The UK remains one of the worlds most significant contributors to the international development agenda though increasing scrutiny from the UK public Recent reports demonstrate that attitudes and engagement with international development is waning The year ahead is critical why? 16 What do we know? One of the most compelling ways to influence public opinion is to bring positive stories from the South People have the right to be involved in decisions which affect them. Too often are decisions made in the North about the lives of people in the South without consultation The UK volunteering market is one of the largest in the world and the vast volunteer alumni networks are a largely untapped resource 8. Voices for Development: In a nutshell 2 year pilot programme Working in partnership with VSO to: Significantly enhance the engagement of volunteers at each stage of their volunteer journey, equipping & empowering them to effectively contribute to international development debates and campaigns in the UK By offering a wide menu of engagement options, this pilot will create an intimate group of Development Advocates and a larger group of Development Champions to influence policy and practice and action across a number of audiences public, government and private sector 17 9.
