amil Nadu politics has taken a

dramatic turn when V.K.

Sasikala, who was released from

the Bangalore prison after her

imprisonment in the dispropor-

tionate assets case during the

tenure of the late Jayalalithaa,

sprang a surprise by announcing

her retirement from politics. The

suspicion is gaining ground that

the BJP was behind her move, as

the AIADMK led by its chief min-

ister, Edapaddi Palanisami has

ruled out any truck with Sasikala,

despite her assurance that she

would leave no stone unturned to

defeat their common enemy, the

DMK, at the hustings. However,

the chief minister was not

impressed by convincing of the

Union Home Minister Amit Shah

that the division in the AIADMK

votes would favour the DMK as

their goal to oppose their common

enemy would get defeated.

A section of the AIADMK and

the AMMK functionaries and

cadres are disillusioned that con-

testing against each other would

mar their prospects. What is caus-

ing considerable concern to the

BJP circle is that the AMMK has

secured about ten per cent of seats

in the last Lok Sabha election and

its progress is bright in about 44

constituencies for the ensuing

assembly poll. Some AIADMK

functionaries assert that the deci-

sion to sideline the AMMK might

not work out for their party, as the

last assembly poll had indicated

that many candidates had scraped

through by a slender margin.

Hence, the need to avert splitting

the anti-DMK votes is what the

BJP is insisting on its major

alliance partner.

The BJP had asked the

AIADMK to allot about 30 seats

for them with a suggestion that

they, in turn, would allot some

constituencies to the AMMK to

avoid the split in votes and see to

it that they would not involve the

ruling party directly in the alliance

matter. But, the chief minister

made it crystal clear that his party

would offer them only 20 seats,

apart from the Kanyakumai Lok

Sabha by-election, the seat that

was represented by the late

Congress candidate, Vasant

Kumar, which the BJP accepted,

as the party’s ploy is to make an

inroad into Tamil Nadu and

Kerala before asserting their clout.

It may be recalled that the BJP had

scaled down from its earlier

demand of 60 seats to 20 now.

The seat sharing allocation is

crippling the AIADMK further

when it refused to allocate 25

seats as demanded by the DMDK

led by its actor-politician

Vijaykant and his wife, Premalata,

who is the presidium chairman of

the party. The party treasurer and

brother-in-law of Vijaykant,

Sudish directed his anger towards

the AIADMK on the issue and vir-

tually threatened them that they

would not settle for 15 seats

offered by them. The party, how-

ever, had reduced its demand to

23 seats, according to its

spokesman, Parthasarathy. and is

likely to settle for 20 seats. The

AIADMK would love to contest in

minimum 160 to 170 seats, but

since they have already allotted

23 seats to the PMK, after its gov-

ernment provided 10.5 per cent

reservation for Vanniyar commu-

nity, which is the major vote bank

of the PMK, they do not have

much option left.

The DMK is acting as per the

instructions of their political advis-

er Prashant Kishor, who it is being

alleged has created an impression

that unless the party contested in

minimum 180 seats their majority

is not assured and accordingly

asked them to offer a barest mini-

mum of seats to their allied part-

ners. Bearing this in mind, the

DMK has offered only six seats to

its partners, VCK, MDMK and the

CPI, although, the CPI(M) is insist-

ing on double digits. The surpris-

ing aspect, however, was its deal-

ing with the Congress, as the DMK

Andhra's Sentimental

Temple

Located on a small hillock

surrounded by the Godavari, the

Pattiseema temple attracts the

tourists and film units and also

gives a divine feel to the devo-

tees. Film shootings are a regular

feature at the temple which is sit-

uated on an island in Godavari

river. Even in the present days of

fast track roads and bridges, one

has to take a boat to reach the

island and walk in the sandy

stretch for at least a kilometre to

reach the temple. When the

Godavari is in spate, the water

touches the temple steps.

Constructed during the Chola

period, the temple is an abode

for both Lord Shiva and Lord

Vishnu. Every year at least two to

three film shoots take place in

the temple and during those

times, along with the film crew,

people in large numbers gather

to watch the shoot. For some

film units, shooting at least a

couple of scenes here is a senti-

ment. ‘Megha Sandesam,’

‘Bhakta Kannappa,’ ‘Tholikodi

Koosindi,’ ‘Janaki Ramudu,’

‘Aayanaki Iddaru’ and ‘Ninne

Premista’ are a few films to name

that were shot at the temple. This

temple can be seen in most of

director Vamsy's movies because

of his love for Godavari river.

'Cinema Gudi'

Over four hundred Telugu

movies and a few Tamil and

Hindi films have been shot here,

in the Sri Seetha Ramachandra

Swamy Temple in Ammapalli.

For there is a sentiment among

the Tollywood fraternity that a

movie with even one scene shot

here at this temple, will surely

have a successful run at the box

office and for a hundred days at

the least. And, if there was one

movie that would immediately

bring to mind this beautiful tem-

ple it is the 2001 blockbuster

‘Murari’. For long it was popular

as ‘Cinema Gudi’ due to

Tollywood's tryst with the tem-

ple. Sr. NTR's 'Srimad Virat

Pothuluri Veerabrahmend

Swamy Charitra' was the first

film to be shot at this place. A

few scenes from movies like

'Teenmaar', 'Veera', 'Eega', 'Mr.

Perfect' and 'Poola Rangadu'

have been shot in this ancient

temple. A part of the temple’s

outer structure was damaged

during a Telugu film shooting

where an exploding car in a fight

sequence crashed on the left side

of gali gopuram. Since then, the

temple has been out of bounds

for film shootings.

Located 31 km from

Hyderabad and 12 km from the

Rajiv Gandhi International

Airport (RGIA) at Shamshabad, is

the centuries-old Ammapalli

temple which is spread over 250

crores. It is said to have been

built by Chalukyas of Vengi

sometime between the 7th and

12th centuries and it is believed

that Lord Rama stopped to rest

here during his journey to

Dandakaranya forest. The 80 feet

unique ‘gali gopuram’ with

beautiful carvings, an age-old

step well spread over an acre of

land with a walkway around it

and the decorative walls with

sculptural representations is a

treat to the eye. The 12th-centu-

ry idols of Kodandarama, Sita

and Lakshmana and also the

‘makarathoranam’ over the idols

here are carved out of a single

stone. Interestingly, the idol of

Hanuman, usually seen next to

Rama, is not seen in the inner-

most sanctuary here. Instead, it is

at the base of the ‘dhwaja stamb-

ha’ (flag pole) facing Rama.

According to the priest, the tem-

ple dates back to a time when

Rama hadn’t yet met Hanuman

and this probably explains the

placement of the idol.

Other mentionables

Temples are often seen in

Telugu movies and there are

many temple locations in

Telangana and Andhra Pradesh

which are used for film shoot-

ings. The 1000 pillar temple

located in Warangal, Telangana

is often seen in Telugu movies. It

is famous for its Chalukya style

architecture and the sculptures

made by the Kakatiyas. The rich-

ly carved pillars and the huge

black basalt single stone carved

Nandi attract tourists and film-

makers. The temple can be seen

in movies like 'Varsham' and

'Rudramadevi'. The local tem-

ples in Hyderabad like Film

Nagar Daiva Sannidhanam,

Jubilee Hills Balaji temple and

Manikonda Shivalayam can be

frequently seen in Telugu

movies. The pooja ceremony of

many movies take place in the

aforementioned temples.

The Yaganti cave near the

famous Sri Yaganti Uma

Maheswara Temple was depict-

ed as a Kerala cave temple in

'Ekkadiki Pothavu Chinnavada'

movie. Lord Shiva is manifested

as Arthanareeshwara in this 5th

century temple. It is located in

the Kurnool district in Andhra

Pradesh, approximately 75 km

from the city of Kurnool. The

devotees believe that the Nandi

idol in front of the temple is con-

tinuously increasing its size. A

feature of this temple is its

Pushkarini, a small pond of

water on the temple premises.

Water flows into this Pushkarini

from the bottom of hill through

the mouth of Nandi idol. No one

knows how the water reaches

the pond all year round and this

temple architecture in terms of

its sculpture shows the skills of

ancient Viswakarma Sthapathis.

Another temple in the West

Godavari district named

Goshpada Kshetram can be fre-

quently seen in Tollywood

movies. It is situated in Kovvur in

the banks of river Godavari and

is famous for its Teerthayatra. It

can be seen in films like 'Kathi

Kantha Rao', 'Andala Ramudu'

and 'Shatmanam Bhavati'.

Tollywood'sdivine favourites

www.iasianews.net

Telugu movie

buffs can identify

at least half-a-

dozen temples at the very first

glimpse of them in a scene from a movie.

This shows the role temples play in

Tollywood movies. The temples that are

most frequently sought after for Telugu

movie shootings are located in and around

the Telugu states.

Spiritual

The enchanting Sanghi

temple is located in Sanghi

Nagar, 35 kms from

Hyderabad city. It is situated in

a hillock called as

Paramananda Giri, as one

enters a huge Maha Dwaram or

gateway welcomes the visitors.

The Raja Gopuram can be seen

from several kilometers away

which is very tall. A little fur-

ther away, a long flight of steps

leads to the entrance of the

temple complex. The majestic

temple complex hosts all

important Hindu God idols

and there are three Gopurams

seen at the foot of the hillock

which are so tall and seen as if

entering into the heavens. In

this famous temple situated

inside the Ramoji Film City the

Presiding Deity Lord

Venkateshwara inside the sanc-

tum sanctorum is 9 feet tall and

is same as the one at Tirumala.

To the right is the abode of

Goddess Padmavathi, the con-

sort of Lord Venkateswara.

Close to the shrine of Lord

Venkateshwara, is the temple

of Lord SriRama, the symbol of

man's conquest over evil.

Accompanying the Lord are his

faithful consort Sita, devoted

brother Lakshmana and fervent

devotee Hanuman, who is

seated at the feet of the Lord

with folded hands. The temples

of Lord Vijayganapathi, Lord

Shiva, Goddess Durga and

Lord Karthikeya are located

next to the Sri Rama temple.

The Navagraha deities are the

only ones that are in an open

temple. There is also a Pavitra

Vanam or a Holy Garden in the

temple complex where special

leaves and flowers are grown

for performing poojas. Telugu

movies 'Bommana Brothers

Chandana Sisters',

'Mirapakaay', 'Chinnadana

Nee Kosam' and 'Evandoi

Srivaru' were shot here.

Will AIADMK, LDF

win in T.N., Kerala?its president Rahul Gandhi recently to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K.S. Alagiri burst into tears

and regretted that the DMK is humiliating them, much to the chagrin

and discomfiture of his party colleagues.

Kerala battle

The CPI(M)-led Left Front is expecting to retain power in Kerala,

though the State has voted for the Congress-led United Democratic

Front and the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front alternatively, similar to

Tamil Nadu. The Congress was rated as the winner earlier after their tru-

imphant victory in the last Lok Sabha poll when it romped home with

20 out of 21 seats. However, the recent corporation election was a set-

back for them as the Left Parties swept the poll. The BJP’s strategy is to

occupy the opposition slot in Tamil Nadu and Kerala and to establish

their base before the next Lok Sabha election slated for 2024. Keeping

this in mind, the party has fielded the 88-year-old technocrat E.

Sreedharan considering his stupendous performance at Delhi Metro, as

well as at Konkan Metro.

Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli on

March 1, 2021 recorded another century,

albeit not on the pitch this time, as he

became the first cricketer to get 100 million

followers on Instagram. The 32-year-old

cricketer is also the first person in the Asia-

Pacific region to achieve the feat. The Delhi

batsman has been one of India's most pro-

lific run-getters in the past few years and his

popularity has grown in leaps and bounds.

For over two years until now, Virat has

been the most followed person on

Instagram in India.

Kohli is also the fourth most followed

sports person on Instagram. Portugal foot-

ball player Cristiano Ronaldo tops the chart

of most followers for a sports star with 265

million followers, ahead of FC Barcelona

legend Lionel Messi and Brazil's Neymar,

who are second and third in the list with

186 million and 147 million followers

respectively. A few others in the 100 million

club are Hollywood actor Dwayne Johnson

(The Rock), American singer Beyonce and

Ariana Grande. Earlier, the Indian skipper

had become the first Asian to hit 75 million

followers on the social media platform

owned by Facebook. Former India captain

MS Dhoni is the second most-followed

cricket star on Instagram with over 30 mil-

lion followers. Apart from Instagram, Kohli

also has a staggering following on Twitter

where he has 40.8 million followers.

Virat Kohli, who enjoys massive fan fol-

lowing across all social media platforms,

beat the likes of Priyanka Chopra (60.8 mil-

lion), Shraddha Kapoor (58.1 million),

Deepika Padukone (53.3 million), Alia

Bhatt (51 million) and Akshay Kumar (48.3

million) to become the first Indian to gain as

many as 100 million Instagram followers.

Just like his batting and captaincy records

where he beats his rivals by massive mar-

gins, Kohli has trounced second-placed

Priyanka Chopra by almost 40 million fol-

lowers. It is worth mentioning that a few

months ago, the cricketer was lagging

behind Chopra in the race to reach 100 mil-

lion followers. Also, he is the only cricketer

in the world’s top 10 highest-earning ath-

letes through sponsored posts on Instagram.

According to a Hopper HQ's list, Kohli

made $296,000 ('2.2 crore approximately)

per post in 2020 and was the only Indian

besides Priyanka Chopra to feature on the

Instagram Rich List. Virat holds the top posi-

tion as the country's most valuable celebri-

ty brand with a brand value of $237.7 mil-

lion, according to a leading brand valua-

tion.

Virat Kohli took to Instagram, after

reaching the feat, to thank his fans for mak-

ing his journey beautiful. He shared a video

highlighting some of his favourite posts on

the digital platform that also marked the

important landmarks in his life. The

International Cricket Council (ICC) also

took to social media to honour the Indian

skipper for the special record. Being one of

the best batsmen in the world at present,

the run machine enjoys massive popularity

around the globe and has been a force to

reckon with for Team India across formats.

Kohli has 27 centuries in Test matches and

43 tons in ODI cricket under his belt. He is

also India's most successful Test captain

already with 35 wins in 59 matches. And

recently, Anushka Sharma-Virat Kohli cou-

ple was blessed with a baby girl and they

have named her as Vamika.

T Venkatesh

or the last few years, Telugu Film

Industry (TFI) has been on the rise with

a number of National Awards and global

reach. Tollywood is also experiencing a

new trend of content-rich films dominating

the box-office where the low-budget films

dealing with newer themes, stories and

landscapes are proliferating. In the post-

Baahubali era, there’s no denying that

Telugu filmmakers and producers have set

their eyes on expanding the market for

Telugu films.

Following the Bollywood style

It is a known fact that about 100 movies

will get released in Tollywood every year.

Out of them, around 20% will be either

mega budget films or films of superstars. It

is generally difficult to announce the

release dates much in advance. But in

Hollywood and Bollywood, the situation

has been different. They fix the date even

before the beginning of the shoot. They

announce the date of release and start the

shoot. With this the other filmmakers can

plan their releases without any clash. Such

discipline was never there in TFI. But after

the Corona period, the situation seems to

be changing. The release dates are fixed

months before. But it is to be seen how

many of the films would release as per the

fixed date and how many would get

delayed.

Next year's biggies

Until recently, Tollywood filmmakers

were in a mad rush to announce the release

dates for their upcoming films in 2021. But,

the makers of some upcoming big budget

flicks starring top Tollywood stars like

Prabhas, Mahesh Babu and Pawan Kalyan

have gone a notch higher and already

sealed a few festive dates in 2022. Firstly, it

was pan-India star Prabhas’ 'Adipurush' that

sealed the 2022 berth a couple of months

ago. 'Adipurush', an epic magnum opus

based on the Ramayana, will be having a

humongous pan-international release on

August 11, 2022, to cash in on the

Independence Day week advantage. And a

few weeks ago, Mahesh Babu’s

'Sarkaru Vaari Paata' was confirmed

for a Sankranthi, 2022 release. The

film is currently under production

and it has wrapped up two crucial

schedules in Hyderabad and Dubai.

Recently, the makers of Pawan

Kalyan’s keenly awaited period

action drama with the working title

of 'PSPK27' too have locked a

Sankranthi, 2022 release for their

film. In this 15th century film with a

Mughal India era backdrop, Pawan

plays a Robinhood-like role. Also,

this Krish directorial will be Pawan’s

first pan-India film. Akkineni

Nagarjuna is also planning to release

his upcoming film, 'Bangarraju', the

sequel to his 2016 hit 'Soggade

Chinni Nayana', in theatres for 2022

Sankranti. With this announcement it

is evident that Tollywood is set to

witness a high octane clash among

biggies next Sankranti. And the latest to add

to the list is Prabhas' 'Salaar'. This

Prashanth Neel pan-India gangster drama

will be releasing on April 14th next year

and has a huge initial advantage at the box-

office, as the release date is followed by a

Good Friday long weekend.

Battle with Bollywood

The 2021 films release calendar is play-

ing out exactly as analysts had feared. There

are several impending big clashes at the

box office on crucial National holidays.

Given the delayed status of the entire slate

of 2020 film releases, high profile clashes at

the box office are bound to happen. The

biggest clashes are always around impor-

tant public holidays – Independence Day,

Dussehra and Diwali. This year, all three

national holidays will see the clash of the

biggies as they are the days when filmmak-

ers are preferring to release their films. The

clash between 'RRR' and 'Maidaan' is an

example of release clashes between

Tollywood and Bollywood projects.

Though the producers of 'Maidaan' had

decided October 15, 2021 as the release

date six months ago, 'Baahubali' director SS

Rajamouli recently announced that his

upcoming movie 'RRR' would release on

October 13 this year, resulting in a clash.

Boney Kapoor has expressed his displeas-

ure with the makers of the pan-India movie

'RRR' for setting up a clash with his movie

'Maidaan' in October on the occasion of

Dussehra. Both the Tollywood and

Bollywood filmmakers have had a rift since

the making of Baahubali following a con-

troversy that was led by financial reasons

and late actor Sridevi not being a part of it.

Interestingly, both the films feature Ajay

Devgn. While he plays the lead role in

'Maidaan', the 'Tanhaji' actor also has an

important character to play in 'RRR'.

Along the same lines, Prabhas's 'Radhe

Shyam' will clash with Alia Bhatt's

'Gangubai Kathiawadi' at the box-office.

Both the films are set to release on July 30.

Alia Bhatt announced the film's release date

on the occasion of the movie director

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's birthday. The movie

showcases the story of mafia queen

Gangubai Kathiawadi and it will be Alia's

first project with Bhansali. The makers of

'Radhe Shyam' released the film's teaser on

Valentine's Day this year. Directed by

Radha Krishna Kumar and produced by UV

Creations, the film will also release in

Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam. Next

in line, Saif Ali Khan and Vijay

Devarakonda will be locking horns for the

first time as 'Bhoot Police' is set to release

on September 10 while 'Liger' will be hit-

ting the screens on September 9 this year.

Saif Ali Khan and Arjun Kapoor starrer

'Bhoot Police' happens to be a horror com-

edy while Puri Jagannadh’s pan-India proj-

ect 'Liger' features Vijay, Ananya Pandey

and Ramya Krishna in lead roles.

'Pushpa' and 'Attack' are the next to

jump on the box-office clash bandwagon.

Both these movies are slated for an

Independence Day week release. 'Pushpa'

features Stylish Star Allu Arjun, Rashmika

Mandana, Jagapathi Babu, Prakash Raj and

Sunil. Ever since 'Ala Vaikuntha purramu-

loo' became a pan-India blockbuster hit,

Allu Arjun has become hot property for

filmmakers and this has added craze to the

Sukumar directorial. It is a hard-hitting film

on the sandalwood smuggling rampant in

the jungles of the South. On the other side,

'Attack' stars John Abraham in the lead role,

alongside Jacqueline Fernandez, Rakul

Preet Singh and Babrak Akbari. The film is

based on the hostage crisis and acts of ter-

rorism – a prime and juicy plot ideal for

Independence Day.

The first week of July 2021 will see

another such clash. Two great military

heroes of our country, Captain Vikram

Batra and Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan are

getting their biopics, respectively titled,

'Shershaah' and 'Major'. Both of them are

planning to get released on 2nd of July.

Siddharth Malhotra is going to portray the

Kargil war hero and

Paramveer Chakra win-

ner Captain Vikram

Batra in Karan Johar's

production, 'Shershaah'

while Tollywood actor

and writer Adivi Sesh is

going to play Major

Sandeep Unnikrishnan

who sacrificed his life

during the 2008

Mumbai attacks. It

would be a happy week-

end for patriotic movie

fans but both the films

might suffer commercial

disadvantage due to the

clash. The film industry

has already been facing

the brunt of a deadly

pandemic, over which

big box-office clashes

would mean brutal.

tomers through a complex net-

work (also known as the power

grid). The tricky thing about the

power grid is that power gener-

ation and power demand must

match at all times. Otherwise,

issues like blackouts and sys-

tem failures can arise.

When dealing with renewable

energy, it is difficult to predict

the grid’s electricity production

capacity. After all, it depends

on several factors such as sun-

light and wind.

Demand Response

When large swings in demand

occur, it can be very expensive for

countries which produce most of

their energy through renewable

energy sources. With most coun-

tries shifting towards green ener-

gy, responding effectively to

swings in demand is becoming

even more difficult.

Solving Demand Response

Aims at forecasting how much

wind and solar energy to expect at

a given time. This allows the

country to make up for excess

electricity demand by using non-

renewable energy whenever nec-

essary.

In order to accurately match

supply and demand, they use

large historical data sets to train

their machine learning algorithms

– as well as data collected from

the wind turbines or solar panels –

to effectively forecast weather and

power changes.

Predictive Maintenance

Aside from helping to match

energy production with energy

consumption, AI is becoming a

major driver in assuring the relia-

bility and robustness of power

grids.

Where AI and Internet of

Things (IoT) Step In

Machine learning techniques

can be used to implement predic-

tive maintenance. In essence,

power lines, machinery, and sta-

tions are equipped with sensors

that collect operational time series

data (data accompanied by a time-

stamp).

From there, machine learning

algorithms can predict whether a

component can fail in X amount

of time (or n-steps). Additionally,

it can also predict the Remaining

Useful Life of machinery, or when

the next failure may occur.

KV Venugopal

ndia won the fourth and last

test at Ahmedabad against

England by an innings and 135

runs. The team led by Virat Kohli

won the series 3-1 convincingly

against the visiting team led by Joe

Root after losing the first test at

Chennai. Tamil Nadu all-rounder

Ravichandran Ashwin was award-

ed the player of the series, where-

as the man of the match award

went to the dynamic and budding

wicketkeeper Rishab Pant. The

England batsmen were all at sea

against the Indian spinners Ashwin

as well as the home town boy Axar

Patel. Though the battery of

English pacers led by Anderson

did a magnificent job, their spin-

ners, especially the bowling all-

rounder Bess disappointed the

connoisseurs of the game,

although Leach did more than

adequate justice in containing the

batsmen, but his wicket taking

ability was in question.

Embarrassed over the performance

of his spinners, Root had to roll

over his arm to purchase some

important wickets in the last test at

Ahmedabad, but this time around

even with Bess around, the visitors

could not create a positive impact

on their strong batting line-up.

India outplayed England in bat-

ting, bowling and fielding. The vis-

itors regretted playing on turning

tracks and a section of former

cricket players from the visiting

team felt that the hosts must pre-

pare sporting wickets that assist

the batsmen as well as the

bowlers. They are perhaps right, as

the third test at Ahmedabad ended

within two days and the last test at

the same lasted only three days.

But the experts in the game opine

that England needs to be blamed

squarely for their batting mishap,

more than the pitch. Their views

were echoed by our Indian open-

ing batsman Rohit Sharma, who

made it clear that both the teams

did not play well in the third test,

but Indian players used their foot-

work and played the spinners bet-

ter than the visitors. The England

captain Root agreed with the opin-

ion of Rohit and said without

mincing words that there is no

excuse for his team’s defeat, as

they played below par whenever

the crunch situation occurred.

Root is perhaps right as

England let down the advantage

when the last two tests appeared

to be on balance, but India proved

beyond doubt that their lower-

middle-order, too, can rise to the

occasion when the situation war-

ranted. For instance, when the

hosts lost early wickets in quick

succession, Rishabh Pant,

Washington Sundar and Ashwin

proved their mettle with their wil-

low. As Kohli always stressed,

India needs more of either batting

or bowling all-rounders.

Importantly, Sundar needs to

improve his bowling skill.

Though both the teams tried

their level best, India had shown

more intent and especially in rotat-

ing the strike and concentrating on

session-to-session basis, even

though players of the calibre of

Rahane and Pujara disappointed

the connoisseurs of the game with

their poor display. The opener Gill

has created an impression that he

is going to stay in the team for a

long time to come, and if K.L.

Rahul is unable to sustain his form,

either due to injury or for other

reasons, the team India has decid-

ed to give an additional rope to the

swashbuckling Gill. However, it

is time for India to introspect their

strength and weaknesses and any

sort of complacency would mar

the performance and oneness of

the team in future. The lovers of

the game would be gladdened that

India found an able wicketkeeper

batsman Rishab Pant after the exit

of M.S. Dhoni.

India more or less retained the

same team, but England’s rotation

policy did not work, as pointed

out by Root, due to adhering to

bio-bubble syndrome owing to

COVID-19 pandemic. This did

upset the rhythm of the players

and it was reflected during their

practice sessions, too. Moreover,

the departure of their wicketkeep-

er Butler and their all-rounder

Moen Ali had created problems for

the visitors, as the substitute wick-

etkeeper Foakes, though was not

found wanting behind the wicket,

as well as smothering the spin,

could not accelerate the proceed-

ings when the need arose. The vis-

iting team’s decision to strengthen

their batting line-up with Bairstow,

Pope and Lawrence did not mate-

rialise, although the last two bats-

men appeared to use their crease

while negotiating our spinners bet-

ter than the other batsmen.

The Indian coach Ravi Shastri

was apt in mentioning that the

team’s meritorious performance

after their victory against Australia

recently in their soil proved

beyond doubt that India has come

of age in test cricket over the last

couple of years. The team led by

Kohli is looking forward to the

inaugural World Test

Championship final against New

Zealand on June 18, 2021 and the

venue is Southampton's Ageas

Bowl Stadium. The visitors shoddy

display in the last three tests indi-

cated that they were left in tatters

on a wicket where most of their

players, touring India for the first

time, had no idea of how to tackle

the conditions abroad, but Kohli

made it crystal clear that murmur-

ing about the pitch conditions

would not help, as India faced

bouncy tracks in other countries

often and were expected to adjust

to the deteriorating wickets.

However, success should not

go to the head of the Indian team,

says the former captain and the

present commentator, Sunil

Gavaskar. The master blaster

Gavaskar celebrated his 50th

anniversary of his India debut on

March 6, 2021, the day India got

qualified to the World Test cham-

pionship final, by making his

debut on social media by joining

Instagram. On the special occa-

sion, he got felicitated by the

BCCI’s secretary Jay Shah at the

Narendra Modi Stadium in

Ahmedabad and was awarded

with a special cap. Now, it is time

for the players to concentrate on

sticking to their performances

against the coming one-day match-

es. A hectic schedule is ahead of

India, as IPL will be followed soon

after. India will be expected to

tour England in summer and most

importantly, the preparation has to

be made for the World Test cham-

pionship final in June, this year.

The players should not neglect the

importance of domestic tourna-

ments like Ranji Trophy and Vijay

Hazare, as it has become a step-

ping stone for their career.
