Bridgestone Americas has resurrected the LeMans brand, which had been out of circulation of the past four tears, and has begun distributing it exclusively through its Tire Wholesale Warehouse (TWW) subsidiary.

Bridgestone is bringing the brand back in three all-season lines – Perfor-mance A/S, Touring A/S and SUV A/S – That the tire maker is marketing as an entry-level product for price-conscious consumers.

TWW will distribute the brand to dealers through its 22 ware-houses and has set up a separate website that will have details of the brand’s launch, etc. The company has not yet disclosed any sug-gested retails pricing.

The lines are produced under contract in China by Shandong Yongsheng Rubber Co. Ltd., according to the DOT codes on the tires shown on the brand’s website.

Shandong Guofeng’s import and countervailing duties total 56.17 percent, according to the U.S. Commerce Department’s lists.

“The reliable performance of the LeMans all-season tire line demonstrates that value and quality can go hand-in-hand,” said Alan Starc, TWW’s director.

“TWW’s status as sole supplier of the LeMans tire brand will allow our inde-pendent dealer customers to create a point of differentiation in the market, helping set them apart from their competitors.”

TWW operates 25 wholesale distribution centers throughout the U.S., serving independent tire retailers with consumer tire products.

Is your company car ready for the winter?

by Mauro Di Tullio, SENIOR ACCOUNT REPRESENTATIVE, ASSOCIATIONS – LAVAL | www.federated.ca

Mauro Di Tullio Senior Account Representative, Associations, Laval

Canadian winters bring out the road rage in all of us. Last year’s deep freeze took many drivers by surprise, proving that driving in the freezing winter months can be a nightmare.

To help you and your business make a smooth transition into these cold months, we recommend starting the process of winterizing your company car early on in the fall. We’ve put together a list of winter essentials to prep your car for the harsh weather road conditions ahead. Batteries: Battery faults are the most common cause of breakdown during the year, but particularly so in the winter when cold temperatures take a toll on the battery’s life. To reduce the chances of your battery dying in the winter — or worse, en route — have your service garage take a look. Batteries are good for three to five years. If your battery is more than five years old and you’re experiencing difficulties starting your car, you may want to consider getting a new battery. Vehicle fluids: This includes engine oil, engine coolants, and windshield washer fluid. If you can’t remember the last time you changed your engine oil, get it changed. And keep your gas tank full in case you’re stuck in traffic or you have to pull over due to horrible weather conditions. For engine coolants, if the coolant is more than two years old, then you should have it

replaced. The engine cooling system should be filled with a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and distiller water to prevent freezing and boiling over. Also, note that there are three types of coolant available on the market today. Don’t assume you can differentiate between them based on the colour of the coolant. Refer to your car owner’s manual to be sure. Winter tires: The special rubber compound in winter tires allows them to stay flexible and grip snow and ice for optimum traction. Your winter tires can go on as soon as temperatures hit 7 C. Once you’ve put them on, check the air pressure in all four tires and your spare tire. The pressure in your tires tends to drop significantly in the winter due to the cold air, so do routine checks throughout the winter months. Wiper blades: Being unable to see the road ahead of you is something no driver wants to experience. In the winter, blowing snow and rain can make it extremely difficult to drive. Checking your wiper blades in advance can help you be better prepared for the journey ahead of you. We recommend changing your wiper blades at least twice a year. You may also want to consider getting special winter wiper blades with protective rubber boot to prevent snow and ice buildup. Air conditioning system: What many drivers don’t know is that it’s actually your air conditioning system that

defrosts and dehumidifies the inside of your car. Every car with air conditioning has a dehumidifier. So when your heat’s turned on in the winter, if your air conditioning system isn’t working properly, it will not be able to defrost your windows and pull the moisture out of the inside of your car, leaving a musty odor. To prevent this, make sure your air conditioning system is operating smoothly and while you’re at it, check to make sure your block heater is also working.

Emergency safety kit: This is the season for on-the-road emergencies. That’s why it’s important to pack an emergency kit and keep it in your trunk at all times. Items to include: a first aid kit, band-aids, bottled water, energy bars, roadmaps, gloves, a flashlight, matches, and a blanket. A shovel: Keep a full-size shovel in your trunk. A shovel will come in handy when you’re stuck in deep snow, or when there’s an excess of ice buildup on your windshield. With the right preparation, winterizing your car doesn’t have to feel like a daunting chore, and in turn, the winter months will keep you — and your company — protected.

Fountain opens DC’s in OntarioEDMONTON, Alberta – Fountain Tire Ltd.’s Tire Country

wholesale distribution subsidiary has opened wholesale tire

centers in Vaughan and London, Ontario, positioning the firm

for “significant growth” beyond its traditional base in Western

Canada.

“The opening of these locations further strengthens Tire

Country’s position as a highly aligned Goodyear wholesale

distributor,” said Jason Herle, general manager, expansion, for

Tire Country.

Tire Country’s new wholesale centers will offer 57,000 square

feet of warehouse space, enabling the wholesaler’s inventory

and supply management team to ensure that dealers have the

right products when they need them.

The company is leasing the locations, both of which previ-

ously were distribution centers; the London facility previously

was a Goodyear Wholesale Tire Center.

The Vaughan location opens with 11 employees and eight

delivery trucks, while the London site has three employees

and four trucks.

Tire Country carries more than a dozen brands, but features

Goodyear, Dunlop, Kelly and Sailun.

Based in Edmonton since 2001, Tire Country has been a

Goodyear wholesale distributor for more than 10 years. The

company’s other warehouses – in Delta, British Columbia;

Calgary and St. Albert, Alberta; and Winnipeg, Manitoba – span

more than 400,000 square feet combined, according to the

firm’s website.

As for continued growth, Tire Country said it is “continuously

evaluating” its opportunities.”

W ell, it’s that time of year again. The temperature is quickly drop-ping and here we are—as we

routinely do every autumn—reminding motorists to get their vehicles in check for the winter weather and the unpleas-ant road conditions that come with it.

The time is now when the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada reminds motorists who have their winter tires locked away in storage to book their vehicle service appointments well in advance of the first major snowfall. And for the remaining 35 percent of Canadians that don’t use winter tires: it’s time for them to get the facts so that they too can be prepared for said unpleasant winter road conditions.

Winter tire useWe are certainly pleased to see the adop-tion of winter tires on the rise over the years. In fact, utilization of winter tires has nearly doubled since 1998. We are also pleased to see more jurisdictions taking proactive measures to help drive up usage.

But, the reality is that outside of Quebec, where winter tires are the law, only half of Canadians use winter tires. Sixty-three per-cent of people who don’t use them believe that their all-season tires do them justice in the winter, which is a common consumer misconception. The reality is that winter tires are superior to conventional tires in all cold-weather conditions, and there’s plenty of scientific information to support this notion.

TRAC is not calling on government to make winter tires the law; but we do believe every driver should be aware of the benefits of driving on winter tires. We will continue to engage with motorists, media, civic leaders

and others to help them understand why winter tires are a critical component in pro-moting winter road safety.

tire technologySo, as we do every year, we’d like to re-mind drivers that tires aren’t just round and black. Today’s highly innovative winter tires really work.

There’s evidence to illustrate that winter tires save lives. A 2011 study by the prov-ince of Quebec asserts that the province has seen a 5% drop in road accident vic-tims and a 3% drop in serious injuries and deaths since winter tires were made man-datory in 2008. Let’s not forget that win-ter tires also lower insurance and health care costs, personal injuries and prevent-able collisions, emergency services, and of course, road congestion.

With winter right around the corner, here are a handful of important facts to keep in mind:

1. Winter tires outperform all-season tires on all cold-weather road condi-tions, even on dry pavement. Winter tires are manufactured with huskier tread designs and hundreds of hair-line cuts to evacuate water, slush and snow so that they grip all cold-weather

surfaces better and provide improved vehicle traction and handling.

2. Temperature is everything with win-ter tires. Winter tires are superior to conventional tires at temperatures at or below 7 degrees Celsius. Winter tires are made with softer rubber compounds to maintain flexibility at colder temperatures. By comparison, conventional tires begin to harden at colder temperatures, significantly re-ducing traction.

3. Look for a tire that displays the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake Symbol on the sidewall when shopping for winter tires. Transport Canada acknowledges that tires displaying this symbol meet specific snow traction performance re-quirements and have been designed specifically for use in severe snow conditions.

For instance, Bridgestone’s proprietary Multi-CellTM Compound was designed to help improve traction in snow and ice without a stud by helping remove the thin layer of surface water to improve grip on ice using millions of microscopic pores in the compound.

Let’s take a look at some key winter tire facts.

of winter tires is, the more efficient it be-comes when the air temperature drops below freezing and road conditions may become wet, dry, snow or ice covered. Instead of thinking of winter tires as “snow tires,” you may want to start thinking of them as “cold-weather tires.”

PerformanceWet winter road surfaces in the day can quickly become slick icy surfaces as even-ing approaches and temperatures drop. When you equip your car with winter tires, you’re prepared for changing road conditions.

We discussed the matter with a professional test driver for a major tire manufacturer who wishes not to be identified: " The chal-lenge is to develop a tread compound for a V-rated (or higher) winter tire since the compound would have to operate well at both low temperatures and high temper-atures. We use a test wheel during speed certification testing, which typically takes

place in a test chamber with an ambient temperature that can reach up to 100OF. The tread pattern has to be carefully de-signed to provide the flexibility and "biting edges" (sipes) needed for winter traction, but stiff enough for decent handling and high speed operation again particularly during speed certification testing."

I suspect that most tire companies have predictive models for tread pattern fea-tures as well as for tread compound properties that relate to the desired tire performance. In addition to predictive modeling, most tire companies do quite a lot of winter tire testing. The quality of UHP winter tires varies a lot from manufacturers; it is your duty to learn your products and to face the constantly growing demand for these types of tires. The owners of high performance cars are demanding and the cars that they drive demand a tire of high quality. Fortunately they have the means to make a logical choice.
