NATIONAL INFLUENZA VACCINATION WEEK: DECEMBER 7-13

National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) is a national observance that was established to highlight the importance of continuing influenza vaccination.

A yearly flu vaccine is recommended for everyone 6 months and older. Vaccination is especially important for protecting those at high risk for serious flu complications, including:

• adults 65 years and older

In honor of National Influenza Vaccination week Cindy Callahan, RN, Infection Control Preventionist, will be offering free flu shots and presenting information on vaccinations. More than 30 percent of people 50 through 64 years of age have one or more chronic medical conditions that put them at increased risk of serious complications from flu. Symptoms of the flu can include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people may also have vomiting and diarrhea. Flu viruses are constantly changing. Each flu season, different flu viruses can spread, and they can affect people differently based on their immune sytems. Even healthy children and adults can get very sick from the flu. In the United States, thousands of healthy adults and children see a doctor or are hospitalized from flu complications each year. Flu vaccination can help protect you and your family from the flu and its complications. Flu vaccination prevented an estimated 13.6 million flu cases, 5.8 million medical visits and nearly 113,000 flu-related hospitalizations in the United States over a six-year period (from 2005 to 2011) according to a study by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention experts.
