The Piper’s Ball will be October 22, 2016 at the American Legion in Massapequa, please see a band member for more information or a tickets. Tickets are $45 per person and includes open bar, a great buffet dinner and great en-tertainment. Please come out an cele-brate with the band as we commemorate 40 years of piping and drumming. Our last parade of the year was on Octo-ber 1st in Long Beach. It was a great parade as usual. By far this parade is one of my favorite events of the year. There are rumors that it was the last pa-rade, I hope not. Speaking of the parade - congratulations to Gail McGuirke on becoming the first women member of the color guard. The story goes like this - one of the men in the color guard had an unexpected accident right in front of the Knights of Columbus hall (they lost their kilt - right to the ground P.J. style), the guard handed his flag to his compatriot next to him - now this gentlemen carried two Irish flags as best he could - when just standing on the street corner taking in the sights and sounds was Gail - who the extra flag was

thrusted upon. Gail guarded the extra flag until one of the color guardsmen took it from her - thereby making her an honorary color guard member.

The band will be having elections for band of-ficers on November 3rd between 7-9pm. If you are a band member in good standing see Ed about running for positions. As we get close to finishing the year I look back and begin preparing the budget for next year, next month I will put some of the amaz-ing statistics of this year in this column. Thursday nights from 7pm to 10pm is band practice each week. We currently have a fairly new group of students taking both the bag-pipes and the drums. If you or someone you know is interested now is the time to come on down and take lessons. The fee to join the

band is still only $100 and this includes all the equipment needed to learn. There are some minor additional items but in general we keep it very affordable to join the band and receive free lessons.

Wow, what a showing of the Division / Tara Pipes & Drums / Fr. Tim Hirten / County and State AOH officers for the funeral of the founder of the Tara Pipe Band. John (Caffrey) was a member of the Color Guard for many years and was honored by his fellow Pipe Men as they led the funeral procession from St. Rose of Lima to his burial plot in Grace Cemetery. I was privileged to lead the Rite of Committal with the assistance of Fr. Tim.

It was a fitting tribute to one who contributed so much to our Division and “JACK” will be sorely missed. I put the “JACK” in just to get his goat. Oh! How he hated to be called “Jack”!

On another note, many of you have heard Maureen Flood’s name included with the Prayers for the Sick at St. Rose. I am sad to report that she is now in hospice care and none of know when the end will be here. Please in-clude her in your prayers.

This is the one year anniversary of my trip to Ireland with Fr, Ken Zach. To say that we had a great time would be an understatement. Thirteen days in Eire is heaven for anyone of us.

Glendalough Glendalough's Monastic History

In the latter part of the sixth century, St. Kevin crossed the mountains from Hollywood to Glendalough. The path he took

later became known as St. Kevin's Way. This track facilitated the development of Glendalough, so that within 100 years

it had developed from a remote hermitage site into one of the most important monastic sites in Ireland.

It is not known where the original settlement in the Glendalough Valley was located but was possibly in the same area

as Reefert Church, on the south-eastern shore of the Upper Lake. Reefert was a sacred location as it was the burial

place of kings and chiefs. Later still, the cathedral, churches and the round tower was constructed to the east of the low-

er lake. This gradual eastern progression of the settlement made it increasingly more accessible to would-be pilgrims

and travelers.

As its fame spread, the monastery flourished and its success continued after St. Kevin died in 617AD. By the end of the

eighth century an impressive monastic settlement, capable of supporting a sizeable population, had been acquired.

Monasteries in pre-Norman Ireland were a considerable economic force, and were sufficiently well organized as to be

capable of withstanding periodic crises and famines. There was a large lay population in Glendalough. The population

there may have been around 500-1,000 people. Many of the laypersons would have been employed by the monastery -

tending flocks, tilling, sowing and harvesting. In addition to stores of treasure, most monasteries maintained substantial

stocks of food.

In the aftermath of famines, disease, drought and other natural disasters monasteries were often plundered. The loca-

tion of the Glendalough monastery, in a remote valley in an upland area, made it an easy target, and it was attacked

many times between 775 and 1095 by both local tribes and Norse invaders. Usually the churches and houses were

burned, but each time the monastery was rebuilt. That the monastery survived this constant onslaught is remarkable and

is evidence of the large number of people living there as many would have been needed to rebuild after each attack.

With the arrival of the Anglo-Normans a dramatic change occurred within the political landscape of Ireland. Both ecclesi-

astical and political activity centered around Dublin. Subsequently, Glendalough was annexed to the diocese of Dublin

and its importance declined. Despite this, the place has retained a spiritual significance.

CONGRATULATIONS, CONDOLENCES & PRAYERS

We had a very nice turnout of Division 15 Ladies at The Nassau County Feis this year. We always have a good time working at the dancing tent. Thank you to everyone that volunteered their time. A great time was also had this past weekend at the Long Beach Irish Festival. Luckily the rain held off and we were able to enjoy the festivities. If you have not been, I highly recommend attending next year. There is a parade, vendors, delicious food, great music and a wonderful chance to hang out with brother and sister Hibernians from across New York.

Yours in Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity,

Joanne
