LAST MEETING - October 18, 2019 – Interstate 74 Bridge Project
Sixty-five attended on Friday, including 3 guests. Katie Burt and Jimmy Holt were guests of Brad Burt and Jim Smith had his daughter Annette with him. Dr. Anita read a thank you note from Project Renewal. Greg Schaapveld asked for a couple more volunteers for the musical instrument installation on Saturday morning. Merle Anderson told about the GMOC orphans/students that still need sponsors. Patrick Olsen gave some auction information and stressed that we NEED items! John Maxwell an-nounced the Dictionary dates and auctioned off the Goodies of the week. Five items brought $240 this week. Dr. Brad and Katie Burt announced the location of Aqua Tech #2, on North Elmore, near Dicks Sporting Goods. It is also the 5th anniversary of Aqua Tech in Eldridge and all washes are $5 Friday only. They also gave a $1000 dona-tion to the club.
George Ryan was unable to speak at Rotary, so he sent a substitute…(so sorry, I didn’t get his name). We learned a lot about the Interstate 74 bridge construction. The arches are 200 feet high and floated down the Mississippi from the St. Louis area to the Quad City build area. They are equipped with a health monitoring system which would detect any little crack, etc. in the bridge system. This bridge design is by far the most difficult design that was available to build. The west bound lanes should be completed by winter. It is a $84 million contract. The west bound viaduct should also be completed by winter. It is a $82 million contract. There are still parts of the bridge with contract to be let. A requirement is that the parts of the bridge must all be “Made in America”. A 670-ton crane is lifting the arch parts. The bad winter of early 2019 and the Spring flooding has been a nightmare to the bridge workers.
The 4 Way Test Of the things we THINK SAY or DO
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
