MACHINE POLITICS.
It is surprising that the more
intelligent portion of tbe active j
nopporters of the republic cannot
understand that nothing is more
injurious to the formation and
continuance of a stable govern-
ment than the present abseuce of
a healthy opposition. Any at-
tempts of placing an independent
ticket in the field on tbe part of
men dissatisfied with tho Ameri-
can Union ticket i3 met with u
howl of derision. Tho dictum
issued from tho Lengno must bo
final and irrevocable. Everybody
must bow to Murray and Jonesand blindly follow in their steps.
Tho experience gained in 1887
should be a lesion to tho presentgovernment The revolutionarygovernment at that day swept
everything before them and theyelected a legislature in which
there was only one party and ab-
solutely no opposition and the
result is that thoy filled the sta-tut- o
book of the conntry with
some of tho most absurd, uselass, and poorly framed laws. A oJ'Atho laws have been declnrod un-
constitutional nnd a number of
othors have virtually never goneinto effect white another number
had to bo amended if not repealod altogether.
And this result is quite natur-
al. Legislators who need notwatch or spar with an oppositiongot careless and thoy rush meas-
ures through in a slip shod man-
ner to got through with the work
and got back to business andhomes. That tho administrationof course will have a groat andabsolnto majority goes withoutaaying. Legislators on an
ticket would not be inopposition to tho government ex-
cept causo givou but thoy wouldmako caroful investigations intothe mothods of the governmentand not blindly adopt overy proposition or act .placed before thohouso. "Why the governmentshould bo afraid to meet men whowero elected independently andnot bound by any cath or pledgwo cannot seo. Tho plantersliavo the absolute majority inboth housos and ,tho planters areof course tho rulors of tho governinent.
Tho ticket published a few daysago in our columns was not''nomination" by tho Holomua astho Star says but it was sent to usfrom some votors who objected to
tho kind of politics throughwhich Mr. P. C. Jones and hisfriond Mr. Murray undortook to
rnn tho Union Party and the votors of Oahu.
Practical Benevolence.
Tho late S. N. Castlo beforehis death expressed his desirethat a largo portiou of his greatwealth should be devoted to cor--tain charitable purposes. Hishoirs will fulfill his wishes to thelotter.
Tho bequests aro ns follows:$25,000 to tho Hawaiian Boardof Missions; 15,000 to the Hono-lulu Library Association and afine pipo orgnu, to cost from$2500 to $3000. for tho new bnilding of Oahu College. Besidesthere is 10,000 which will brgiven to somo other worthy ob-
ject,, which has not yet been defi-
nitely settled upon.
Kindly Explain.
A Kyoto baby f.t its birth, 21months ago, was registered as agirl, and has only now been re-
registered as a boy. A vernacularpaper irreverently remarks thattho Creator b(nisel sometimesenjoys a joke. Hyoga iVeir-t-.
The condition of the Schoolstreet bridge is scandalous, ifthe bridge is not repaired shortlyan accident can bo expected,

H. Elemme --will run asCandidate for the House
of Bepresentatives.
3Ir. H. Klemme has been re-
quested br a number of voters torun for representative at Ihetcoming election. He consentedtoday and the necessary petitionhas been filed in tbe Interior DepartmenL Klemme is not on any"ticket" but ruin alone on hismerits.
HE DENIES.
In yesterday's Advertiser Mr.Hosmer, the principal of Pu-nab- ou,
denies that he has ever re-
flected in a derogatory manneron the pupils of Hawaiian parentage. The denial is rather vagueand it seems to us that it ia notan open statement of an uprightman who holds a responsibleposition, bt.t rather an attemptto shuffle out of tho affair by virtually saying that he don't want totake notice of his accusers. Farther enquiries among tho pupils, and others confirm the originalstatement that Mr Hosmer hasspoken in highly improper termsof the half-whit-es, and even
warned his white pupils from associating with them. Uur en-
quiries have also disclosed otherthings which if the' are . confirm
'Zxi will p'ace tbe professor in a mostunenviable light and prove thathe is not at all impartial not evanin his well known dislike of andcontempt for half whites. Etoosome of that despisod race seem tofiud favor in the eye of the auto-
crat who ' 'doesu't care what peoplesay."
The trustees who apparentlysustain Mr. Hosraor in his policyof race-hatre- d should rememberthe large sums given to theschool by Hawaiian chiefs andchiefesses. Such benevolencewas not exercised for the purposeof having tho children of the soildiscriminated and abused ifnothing worse When our investigations aro finished we shall showtho stato of affairs at Punahouwithout fear or favor.
I'LL BE A KING.
Tho following "poetry" blein through our window enclosedin an envelop bearing tbe stampof a well-kno- wn firm in townThe "poet" when not busy gettingready to bo a king is evidentlyconfiuod to the every day drudgeryof a wholesale house and towriting "poetry." Big Suits.
The republio is enjoying not'ess than four suits which will betried at tho November term. Pa-blo Artime claims $500 as a re-

Editor Holoxca:May I, through your columns
call the attention of the management of the Tramway Co., thatit would be wise to established arule that small children shall notbe allowed to drive on the plat-
forms of the carg... I have severaltime noticed tnew recklessnesswith which certain small boysstand on the steps of tbe car andamuse themsefve3 by jumping off
and on. Someday an accidentwill happen and the TramwayCo., will be blamed as usually. Isaw this morning a small perhapssix years old boy performing thedescribed acrobatic act severaltime narrowly escaping a 'falland finally when he reached thePunalfou Preparatory Schooljumpiug off right in front of ahack coming from the oppositedirection and only through thehack driver immediately pullingup the little fellow would havebeen trampled on and run over.Letthe children stand up or sit downinside tbe car. It is too late toclose tbe stable wbeu the horseis stolen. Passexoeb.

If we remember correctly the"Charleston" was the first of toe"White Squadron" to visit Hono-
lulu. Her arrival on her secondcrui6 is still in the minds of
people who were here on January29, 1891. When with flags athalf-mas- t and yards cock-bui- lt
she entered port with the bodyof King Kalakaua, the kind at-
tentions shown by the officers tothe King during the voyageto the United States and the, al-
most sacred manner in which thebod' was guarded while beingborne to the Islands, endearedthe "Charleston" to the peopleof Hawaii. As much as it was inthe power of tho people, tueirappreciation was shown to theofficers during their stay andwhen sailed they left graven on
tablets of love and memory, ev-
idences of their Aloha for Ha-
waii. Few, if any, of the officerswho were here then are on thevessel now; some have reachedthe age of retirement and othershave gone to other vessels butthe Charleston is still green in
i the heart or tbe Hawaiians.Have you ever used a PansyStove? We have been sellingthem for four or five years andto-da- y they wear the "YellowCoat" in the empire of stoves. They are recognized by everyone, even dealers in other stoves,as a superior article and onewhich they do not care to run upagainst. Of course stoves maybe bought from people who arenot dealers. We have peoplerunning hero every day or two
for fire bricks and parts belong-
ing to stoves thej-- have boughtfrom other parties, and whenthey fiud they cannot get themiiov discard their stoves and
buy a "Pansy." You see thereis a disadvantage in buying dearthings at low prices. Come tous and get a Pansy at 15 00 andyon get full value for your mo-
ney. You don't get a $75.00range for fifteen dollars, mindvou, but you get a first classstove that is worth Thirty dollarsto any one
Our Ready Mi tod Paints aresuited to the wants of neople whohave a little painting thoy wantto do themselves. Tho advant-age iu buying a prepared paiutib that you have the benefit ofthe best misers in the "United
States without having to pay for"it. Tho paiut is ready for usedirectly you take the top oft thocan and if you don't find it cheaper and better than any you canmix yourself we nro mistaken inour experience' In California thepainters are using the preparedarticle in preference to buyinglead and oils because they find itto their advantage to do so Webelieve it is only a question oftime when the painters here willfall into line.
Hanging lamps are in as greatdemand now as ever. Peopleseem to want something for light-ing purposes that will give asgood light as tho sun they findit in the lamps wo are giving ay.
Our cheap stand lamps arean excellent thing for a servantsroom and will nnd a readv salein the Island stores. WTe cansupply anv demand, for a singlelamp or for a thousand.
There's lots of Hawaiianswhose Kuleanas need fencingand we have the wire with whichto do it Wo have also the ma-
terial for building a fence thatwill last until loag after tho mil-leniu- m.
Instead of paying ahigh price for posts, or even get-ting them for the cutting, yourfence will cost you less money ifyou buy steel stays and washersand make a Jones Locked fence.
We have, everything you wantm tne hardware and house furnishing goods line you wish. And we court investigation as totheir quality and price.

iJohn Spear Kills Himself.
A while ago reports from Hilostated that John Spear, a watch-
maker residing in that town wasmissing and a reward was offeredfor information in regard to hiswhereabouts. For two dayssearches were made and the riversdragged but no sign of the mis-
sing man wasfoend. nO Wen-nesda- y
a native boat man foundthe body of John Spear in agrove of guava bushes in a gulchnear.Hilo. It was then learnedthat the unfortunate man hadcommitted suiiide by shootinghimself through the heart. Deathmust have been instantaneous. The deceased resided formerly inHonolulu where he pursued histrade as practical jeweller andwatchmaker. He was at one timea prominent member of Lodg leProgress uud the masons in Hiloattended to his funeral. Finan-cial tronbles wero undoubtedlythe cause of his rash act. An in-
quest was held and a verdict ofsuicide rendered bv the corner's !
jury.
A Good Opportunity.
It is to be hoped that thetrustees ot tho Lunalilo Estate ;
will use tho present opportunityof securing tho magnificent bustof King Lun ililo now on exhibi-tion at the Pacific Hardwire Co'sstore. It is one of Allen Hutch-
ison's fi test works, and the proper place for it is at the Homeerected by that truly popularking. Tho bust we un lerstandis now tho property of Mr. J. F.Colburn, but wo have no doubt, that he would part with it if theobject was to place it in the Luna-
lilo Homo. Th- - estate is verywealthy and tho trustees couldeasily afford to buy it.
The Term Closed.
The October term of tho CircuitCourt held in Kohala. Hawaiihas finished its work and the dif-
ferent officials have returned to
town. A number ofcasoweietried. The Japanese murderer
from Kona was found gu lty and
sentenced to 20 years imprison-
ment. Gaspard who was accused
of inst gating tho recent "coffee"
battle was found guilty and sen-
tenced to pay a tine of 5U0. An
appeal was uotod Among those
who returned in the Hawaii were
Attorney General W. O. Smith,Paul Neumann, C.L. Carter, and
Chester Doyle. Tho Ashfords
did not return this morning.

The fr-sii-t-
From The War.
.London, Oct. 1. A Britishnaval officer attached to the Ch:-ne- ae
naval squadron which wasengaged in tbeiight off the' monthof the Tain river, has written a
letter to the Graphic, in whichhe gives additional details of thefighting, and says: "On boardthe war ship Chen Yuen, thefihtinjr was awful. Tho decksand space aronnd the guns werestrewn with human fragments.Three of tho five men workinga four-t- on gun, wore blown up bya shell from the Japanese warship. The fourth gunner was
shot while attempting to escapefrom the turret, and the fifth
: stuck to his post This man firedthree rounds at the Ianiwa. oneshell entering the engine room ofthe Japanese ship and-anothe-
r
smashing her forebridge.- - TheXaniwa then hauled off. TheChinese Admiral rewarded thesurviving gunner with a presentof 1000 taols. .
"A shell glanced from the steeldeck of the Chen TuSn and wentthrough her tower, shatteringevHything therein. Ale'itmintwho was in tho net of sinkingthrough the tnbe leading to theengine room, was blown to atoms, and his head w:is left hanging tothe seaking pipe. Huge frag-ments of armor and the teakbuckiug thereof were carried onboard by the shot, crushing anumber of sailors into a shapeless mass A European engineer, who was groping about in an en-
deavor to repair a steam pipe, was drenched from head to footwith the blp id of an assistant, who was dfsembmveled bv hisside by a shot from tho enemy'sships.
Tho Chen Yuen arrived at WeiHawei the d-i- after the fight inthe same cond tion which she leftthe battle No attempt has beenmade to wash the blood from heror to renyive corpses which strew-
ed her decks." . tTho writer expresses the opinion
that if tho European rn'ers conldhavo seen the Chen Yuen thej'would havo foresworn .warhence-fort- h
